Dubbed the « Hollywood of the South, » Atlanta is Marvel’s headquarters for good reason. According to Moviedelic, Trilith Studios (461 Sandy Creek Rd, Fayetteville, GA 30214) hosted the principal filming of Thunderbolts* from February to June 2024 — with its 34 soundstages, an 80′ x 90′ x 30′ virtual production screen and 400-acre backlot.

This is where production designer Grace Yoon built Valentina’s « Watchtower, » reconstructed a section of New York’s 45th Street for the third act, and erected the Avengers Tower clad in black cladding symbolizing « Val’s dark takeover, » as reported by Time Out.

The Trilith Foundation Studio Tour Experience is a 90-minute guided trolley tour. It includes a walk through sets, props and production resources inside Stage 19, plus a visit to the Trilith Foundation shop. Tickets are $28 for adults and $23 for children, according to Trilith Foundation.

Complete your visit with Atlanta Metro Studios (6010 Studio Way, Union City, GA 30291), the secondary studio used for urban scenes and reshoots. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, over 300 Atlanta locals served as extras, and the production left subtle MCU easter eggs, including a Wakandan flag cameo in a street scene.

Insider tip
Ask the Trilith guides for stories about Bob’s « shame room » (nicknamed « Meth Chicken »), a sequence filmed on an additional set in Atlanta in early December 2024.

Utah — the MCU’s first foray into the American desert

Arches National Park: 2,000+ arches
First Marvel film shot in Utah
3 weeks of filming (May–June 2024)
4-day budget: $600 – $1,100

Thunderbolts* is the first Marvel film ever shot in Utah, according to ABC4 Utah. Executive producer Brian Chapek told the Utah Film Commission that the production « found that Utah offered a unique and impressive geography that we had never seen in a film. »

Two counties served as backdrops. In Emery County, near Green River (population under 900), a one-kilometer car chase was filmed over two weeks on a closed desert road. In Grand County, the team captured the opening ambush scene involving Ghost and Red Guardian near Arches National Park, according to Moviedelic.

For activities, fans can follow in Florence Pugh’s own footsteps: on a day off, the actress went ziplining in Moab, and the cast attended a local rodeo, as reported by the Salt Lake Tribune.

Arches National Park access
A Timed Entry Permit is required from April to October. Book on recreation.gov several weeks in advance. The best window for film-like lighting: sunrise in May or October.

Kuala Lumpur — the jump from Merdeka 118

Merdeka 118: world’s 2nd tallest skyscraper
Florence Pugh jumped without a stunt double
Observatory: from $42
3-day budget: $200 – $600

The opening scene of Thunderbolts* is literally breathtaking. According to Time Out, Florence Pugh insisted on performing the parachute jump from the top of Merdeka 118 (Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur) without a stunt double. Three engineering firms were commissioned to certify the safety of the platform before Kevin Feige gave the green light.

The world’s second-tallest skyscraper at 118 floors, Merdeka 118 features two observatories. « The View at 118 » offers 360-degree views of Kuala Lumpur from levels 116 and the spire, according to Angkor Photography Tours. Tickets start at 180 RM (~$42) for adults.

A short walk away, Medan Pasar (Lebuh Ampang) is the historic square where Yelena blends into the crowd after the explosion. The crew planted real explosives on a building facade to create the effect, according to MCU Location Scout. This spot is free, photogenic and accessible — just a 5-minute walk from Masjid Jamek MRT station.

Insider tip
Visit Merdeka 118 on a stormy evening for the film’s atmosphere. During shooting, thunderstorms forced the crew to evacuate the roof every time lightning struck within an 8-kilometer radius.

Florence Pugh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell and David Harbour walked the red carpet in front of hundreds of fans, according to ABC News. Leicester Square has been the home of Hollywood premieres in London for decades — fans can still admire the superhero statues in the square’s gardens.

On the music side, trio Son Lux recorded the original score at Abbey Road Studios (3 Abbey Rd, St John’s Wood, London NW8 9AY) with the London Contemporary Orchestra. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the sessions took place in the legendary Studio 2 — the very same one used by the Beatles — over eight days in February 2025. MetLife Building = Avengers Tower
Budapest: Red Room flashbacks
2 bonus stops for a complete circuit

New York: the Avengers Tower in the film is based on the MetLife Building (200 Park Avenue, Midtown Manhattan), according to Moviedelic. While most urban scenes were recreated in Atlanta, helicopter shots and authentic street backgrounds were filmed in New York. The building is easily accessible from Grand Central Terminal.

Budapest: the dark alleys and historic buildings of the Castle District and Andrassy Avenue were used for flashbacks of Yelena’s past in the Red Room. Budapest is also the setting of Black Widow (2021), making it an essential stop for an extended MCU circuit, according to Where Was It Filmed. Budget around €330 to €620 for 4 days.
