Florence is the ideal base for exploring Tuscany on a day trip. From Santa Maria Novella station, Siena is 68 km away, the Chianti vineyards are 30 km away, and the Cinque Terre are 170 km away. The 10 tours in this selection are all rated 5.0/5 on Viator, with prices ranging from €20 per person up to €1,915 per vehicle (8 passengers). To cover multiple UNESCO sites in a single day without driving on narrow Tuscan roads, booking a guided tour from Florence is the most efficient approach — particularly from May to October.

The first time I drove through the Chianti from Florence, I realised that Tuscany is the most UNESCO-dense region in Europe relative to its size. Within two hours of the Duomo, you can already be deep in the Chianti Classico vineyards, wandering the medieval lanes of Siena, or standing in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. My challenge is not finding somewhere to go — it’s choosing between dozens of destinations that each deserve a full day.

This selection brings together 10 day trips from Florence that I’ve carefully vetted on Viator: chosen on the basis of a 5.0/5 rating, with real 2026 prices, precise meeting points and editorial guidance on which type of traveller gets the most from each tour. You’ll find options for every budget — from the VIP Brunello tasting at €215 per person to the beekeeping discovery in Volterra at €20, plus a cycling tour through the Chianti or the full-day private minivan combining Cinque Terre and Pisa. I’ve also included the key logistics: when to book, where to meet, and which tour suits which group type.

If you only have one day, start with the private Cinque Terre + Pisa tour — it delivers the best UNESCO sites-to-logistics ratio of any single day trip from Florence.

Why Florence is the perfect hub for Tuscany day trips

Florence (Firenze, population 380,000) sits at an exceptional geographical position in the heart of Tuscany, on the River Arno, at 275 metres above sea level. Its location makes it the natural base for travellers looking to explore the region: Siena is 68 km away via the Via Cassia, the first Chianti Classico vineyards begin just 30 km away, San Gimignano is 56 km away, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa is 85 km via the A11 motorway.

Tuscany holds an extraordinary concentration of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for a region covering 23,000 km²: the historic centre of Florence itself, the Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, the historic centre of Siena, San Gimignano with its 14 medieval towers, the Val d’Orcia (listed in 2004 for its rolling hills, cypress trees and white gravel roads), and the Cinque Terre on the Ligurian coast. No other European region concentrates this many UNESCO sites within a single day’s drive.

Tuscan wine adds a second layer of richness: 11 DOCG designations, including Brunello di Montalcino (one of Italy’s most prestigious wines), Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The best season for day trips runs from April to June (green landscapes, Val d’Orcia wildflowers, ideal temperatures) and from September to October (Chianti harvest season, white truffles, golden light). In July and August, day trip coaches are fully booked 4 to 6 weeks ahead and temperatures regularly exceed 38–40°C — book well in advance. According to the Tuscany Region, Florence welcomes 16 million tourists a year (2024 data), which is why the best local operators fill up fast.

Rating 5.0 (52 reviews) 12 hrs From €1,915 per vehicle (up to 8 people) Private tour

This is the only tour that combines the Cinque Terre and Pisa in a single day from Florence — a UNESCO sites-to-logistics ratio I haven’t found anywhere else. The black Mercedes minivan accommodates up to 8 passengers with a pick-up directly from Florence, stopping in the morning at Pisa (Piazza dei Miracoli, Leaning Tower) before heading on to the Ligurian Riviera for the afternoon in the clifftop fishing villages. This private full-day tour visits 3 family estates in the Chianti Classico DOCG — the Black Rooster appellation covering 72,000 hectares between Florence and Siena. You walk the vineyards and ageing cellars, learn about the UGA (Additional Geographic Units) introduced in 2020, and taste a flight of 6 to 8 wines paired with local produce. I recommend this exclusively to wine enthusiasts who want wine as the day’s centrepiece — not as a secondary add-on to sightseeing.

Perfect for travellers who want Tuscany’s two most beautiful medieval towns without any logistical hassle.

    7. Volterra + San Gimignano — off-the-beaten-track Tuscany

Rating 5.0 (29 reviews) 9 hrs From €880 per vehicle (up to 8 people) Private tour

Volterra is my recommendation for travellers who have already done Siena and want a less-photographed side of Tuscany. Perched at 550 metres above sea level, this 3,500-year-old Etruscan city preserves a 1st-century Roman amphitheatre, the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum (600 funerary urns) and alabaster craft workshops found nowhere else in the world. The air-conditioned Mercedes with on-board Wi-Fi seats up to 8 — at €110 per person for a full vehicle, it’s one of the most accessible options on this list.

    • Volterra: under-visited Etruscan city, Roman amphitheatre, unique alabaster crafts
    • Air-conditioned Mercedes with Wi-Fi, bottled water included
    • San Gimignano included (30 km from Volterra) for a full day

    8. Chianti hiking tour — walking, nature and 3 organic wineries

Rating 5.0 (28 reviews) 8 hrs From €199 per person Small group

The alternative for travellers who grow restless on a coach: this small-group tour combines hiking through the Chianti hills (15 to 20 km depending on variant, clay trails between olive groves and vines) with three stops at certified organic estates for tastings. A traditional Tuscan farm lunch — ribollita, panzanella, bruschetta, wine included — is served along the route. Meeting point: Bar Café Lietta, corner of Via San Gallo in Florence (San Marco quarter). May and September are the ideal months.

    9. Beekeeping discovery in Volterra — the unusual experience at €20

Rating 5.0 (27 reviews) 1 hr 30 min From €20 per person Private activity

This is the most unusual and most affordable experience on this list — and at €20 per person, it’s also the cheapest. This 90-minute activity in Volterra introduces you to a traditional hive, the fundamentals of Tuscan beekeeping, and a tasting of several local honeys (acacia, wildflower, chestnut, corbezzolo). I recommend it as a complementary activity on a Volterra day — pair it with the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum or the Roman amphitheatre in the morning. Perfect for families. Meeting point: outside Miele del Ferti shop, Volterra.

    • Traditional Tuscan beehive experience — unique educational activity
    • Honey tasting: acacia, wildflower, chestnut, corbezzolo

    10. Cycling + Chianti wine — the eco-friendly active day trip

Rating 5.0 (25 reviews) 8 hrs From €210 per person Private tour

The Chianti’s back roads — light traffic, gentle gradients, cypress-lined lanes, cycle touring signage — are among Tuscany’s finest for cycling. This private 8-hour tour from Florence includes a bicycle (e-bike available subject to availability), two wine tastings at local producers and a light Tuscan farm lunch. It’s the most eco-friendly format on this list — and one of the rare tours where even non-athletic travellers can fully enjoy it thanks to the e-bike option.

    • Bicycle provided (e-bike available) — pedal through Tuscan vineyards
    • 2 Chianti wine tastings at local cellars + Tuscan lunch included
    • Bottled water included, customisable private tour

Practical tips for day trips from Florence

Transport logistics. For Pisa alone, the train from Santa Maria Novella station (SMN) is the most efficient option: 1 hour journey, departures every 30 minutes, tickets from around €10 return. For Arezzo, the same logic applies — 45 minutes by regional train. For the Chianti, Val d’Orcia, San Gimignano and Volterra, however, public transport is non-existent or impractically indirect (1 hr 45 min bus to San Gimignano with a change, no direct train to Chianti vineyards). A guided private or small-group tour is clearly the better option here — and often cheaper than car hire with insurance and fuel.

Booking in advance. In high season (May to August), book at least 2 to 4 weeks ahead. For the VIP Val d’Orcia and exclusive Chianti Classico tours, allow 4 weeks or more. In September–October, one week usually suffices. Per-vehicle tours (7423P21, 74525P3, 288385P1) fill quickly since a single group can take the entire vehicle.

Meeting points. Most tours state « hotel pick-up » — confirm your exact address with the operator after booking. For the VIP Val d’Orcia tour (244750P9), the meeting point is clearly specified: Starhotels Michelangelo, Viale Fratelli Rosselli 2. For the Chianti hike (280279P1), head to Bar Café Lietta, corner of Via San Gallo (San Marco quarter, 5 minutes’ walk from the Accademia).

Season. May and September are the golden months for Tuscan day trips: temperatures between 20 and 26°C, beautiful landscapes and manageable crowds. June is pleasant but marks the start of high season. July–August: intense heat (35–40°C), tours fully booked 4 to 6 weeks ahead, Cinque Terre heavily crowded. September–October brings the Chianti harvest and San Miniato white truffles — a unique culinary experience. Avoid July–August for outdoor tours (hiking, cycling): heat regularly exceeds 35°C.

Frequently asked questions about day trips from Florence

What is the best day trip from Florence?

The answer depends on your travel style. For covering the most sites in a single day, the private Cinque Terre + Pisa tour (rated 5.0/5 from 52 reviews) offers the best UNESCO sites-to-logistics ratio. For wine lovers, the VIP Brunello + Val d’Orcia tour at €215 per person is the most comprehensive. For active travellers, the Chianti hiking tour with 3 organic wineries at €199 is the most original option.

How much does a day trip from Florence cost?

Prices in this selection range from €20 per person (beekeeping in Volterra, 90 min) to €1,915 per vehicle for up to 8 passengers (private Cinque Terre + Pisa tour, 12 hrs). For per-person tours, budget between €163 (Siena + Chianti) and €469 (exclusive Chianti Classico). For per-vehicle tours, the per-person cost drops to €108 for a group of 6 (Pisa + Chianti + San Gimignano) and €110 for a group of 8 (Volterra + San Gimignano).

Do I need a car for day trips from Florence?

No, a car is not necessary if you book a guided tour. For Pisa alone, the train from Santa Maria Novella is perfectly adequate (1 hour, tickets from around €10 return). For the Chianti, Val d’Orcia, San Gimignano, Volterra and the Cinque Terre, however, there is no practical direct public transport from Florence — a guided tour (such as those in this selection) is the most convenient solution and is generally cheaper than hiring a car with insurance.

When is the best time for day trips from Florence?

May and September are ideal: temperatures between 20 and 26°C, stunning landscapes and moderate crowds. June is pleasant but marks the beginning of high season. July–August: intense heat (35–40°C), tours fully booked 4 to 6 weeks in advance, Cinque Terre very crowded. September–October brings the Chianti harvest and San Miniato white truffles. November–March offers lower prices but some tours are suspended and weather conditions are less favourable for hiking and cycling.

Is the Cinque Terre doable as a day trip from Florence?

Yes, but it requires a full day (minimum 12 hours). By train, the Florence–La Spezia journey takes 2.5 hours with a change, then a ferry or local train to the villages (allow 3 to 4 hours on site). The most efficient option is the private minivan tour that combines Pisa in the morning and the Cinque Terre in the afternoon — departing Florence at 7:30, returning around 19:30–20:00. In July–August the Cinque Terre are extremely busy — opt for May or September instead.
