Canada Day 2026 falls on Wednesday 1 July at Parliament Hill and LeBreton Flats in Ottawa. This edition marks the 159th anniversary of Confederation and the bicentenary of Bytown, founded in 1826. The Tim Hortons fireworks begin at exactly 10:00 pm — a 15-minute pyromusical show, the largest in Canada. Access to the ceremonies, concerts and public transport is entirely free on 1 July. Book your Ottawa hotel at least 3 to 6 months in advance.

1 July 2026 in Ottawa is a date you will not forget. Canada’s bilingual capital celebrates 159 years of Confederation in a mood of national pride not seen since Canada 150 in 2017: the « Elbows Up » sovereignty movement under Prime Minister Mark Carney, and the bicentenary of Bytown — the settlement founded by Lieutenant-Colonel John By in 1826 on the banks of the Ottawa River. The result is a double celebration promising an electric atmosphere, hundreds of thousands of red-and-white maple leaf flags, and the country’s biggest fireworks display at 10:00 pm sharp.

For a traveller from the UK or the wider Commonwealth, Ottawa holds a rare appeal: Canada remains a constitutional monarchy under King Charles III, and Canada Day carries that Commonwealth connection — the Governor General represents the Crown at the national ceremony. Beyond the capital, Ontario opens up a spectacular road trip: the 1,865 islands of the St Lawrence at Gananoque, Fort Henry in Kingston, the Toronto skyline with the CN Tower, and Niagara Falls drawing 13 million visitors a year on the Canadian side.

Parliament Hill and LeBreton Flats

Free entry 1 July 2026 22–26°C Fireworks: 10:00 pm

According to Canadian Heritage, four official sites animate the day: Parliament Hill, LeBreton Flats Park (main stage), the Supreme Court of Canada and Vieux-Hull in Gatineau. Ceremonies begin at 10:00 am with interactive activities — giant bubbles, a 360° photobooth and a community mural. The national noon ceremony (12:00 pm) brings together Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Governor General — the representative of King Charles III — for the national anthem, a Snowbirds flypast and artillery salutes, all delivered in both English and French.

The national evening show at LeBreton Flats (8:00–10:00 pm) is broadcast live on CBC. The confirmed lineup for 2026 will be announced in June, but the 2025 edition featured Sarah McLachlan, Cœur de pirate, Tom Cochrane, Roch Voisine and Mitsou — a mix of classic Canadian rock and French-language chanson. The Tim Hortons fireworks start at 10:00 pm sharp and last 15 minutes, synchronised to a Canadian music soundtrack.

Highlights

  • Snowbirds flypast (9 red-and-white CT-105 Tutor jets) at 4:00 pm — the most photographed moment of the year in Ottawa
  • Free transit all day on OC Transpo (buses, O-Train) and STO Gatineau — do not drive into the city centre
  • National museums free on 1 July: Canadian War Museum, Museum of Nature, Canada Aviation and Space Museum — Canada Strong Pass active until 7 September 2026
  • Sparks Street, Rideau Canal and ByWard Market lively from 10:00 am: BeaverTails, poutine, local crafts and flags everywhere
  • Best fireworks spot: Parc Jacques-Cartier (Gatineau), clear view of Parliament and the Ottawa River — less crowded than LeBreton Flats
Pixidia tip: Arrive at Parliament Hill before 10:00 am — security checkpoints filter entry from 6:00 am and capacity is limited to roughly 30,000 people. The Centre Block is under renovation until 2030–2031, but the Peace Tower remains visible and the ceremony proceeds as normal. Wear red and white: Canadians love seeing visiting travellers join in the spirit.

The 2026 edition is exceptional for more than one reason. According to the City of Ottawa, the bicentenary of Bytown’s founding (1826–2026) runs throughout the summer with exhibitions at the Bytown Museum, classical concerts in July, and the grand official commemoration on 26 September 2026. Canada Day 2026 sits within this year of collective memory — a context no other 1 July will carry for a long time.

The itinerary in 5 stages

510 km total 5–7 days ideal Car hire from CAD 30/day Highway 401 toll-free

According to Destination Ontario, the Ottawa–Kingston–Gananoque–Toronto–Niagara loop is one of North America’s most popular summer circuits. Highway 401 (the trans-Canada) is entirely toll-free — no charges between Ottawa and the Falls. Hiring a car at Ottawa Airport (YOW) starts from CAD 30–55 per day for an economy vehicle.

Here are the five stages of the road trip:

Highlights

  • Kingston — former capital of the Province of Canada (1841–1844): Fort Henry with daily military parades and artillery drills (CAD 20/adult), Bellevue House of Sir John A. Macdonald, craft ales on Princess Street
  • Toronto — 3 million residents, over 200 nationalities: CN Tower (CAD 40, glass floor at 342 m), Kensington Market, Toronto Islands by ferry (10 min) for the skyline view

  • The Canada Strong Pass 2026 (19 June–7 September) makes entry to all Parks Canada national parks free, including the Thousand Islands National Park
Pixidia tip: If your time is limited to 5 days, shorten the Toronto leg (1 night) and prioritise the 1000 Islands and Niagara. Toronto deserves more if you have a full week. For your return flight, flying from Toronto Pearson (YYZ) rather than Ottawa YOW may offer better connections to London.

The 1000 Islands: the unmissable stop on the road trip

Gananoque and the 1,865 islands of the St Lawrence

Gananoque, ON 3-hour cruise Free entry 4.2 / 5 (395 reviews)

The Thousand Islands archipelago (1,865 islands exactly, according to 1000 Islands Tourism) stretches 80 kilometres along the St Lawrence River on the Canada–US border. It is one of the finest freshwater landscapes in the world. In summer the river fills with sailing boats, kayaks and cruise vessels weaving between wooded islets, Victorian villas and the legendary Boldt Castle — a six-towered neo-medieval château built at the turn of the twentieth century by millionaire George Boldt for his wife, left unfinished at her death in 1904 and now restored on the American side.

Thanks to the Canada Strong Pass 2026 (19 June–7 September), entry to the Thousand Islands National Park is entirely free, and Parks Canada camping nights benefit from a 25% discount. A rare opportunity to explore the archipelago by kayak or canoe from the Parks Canada bases at Mallorytown Landing or Beaurivage.

Highlights

  • 3-hour City Cruises Gananoque cruise with views of Boldt Castle from the river (bilingual English-French commentary included)
  • Fort Henry in Kingston, 30 km away (UNESCO-listed) — daily military demonstrations and cannon fire
  • Kayak and canoe hire available at 1000 Islands Kayaking Company and Ahoy Rentals
  • Fish and chips and craft ales at the Stonewater Pub on King Street in Gananoque
Pixidia tip: July cruises fill up fast — book at least 2 weeks in advance. The 3-hour cruise with views of Boldt Castle offers the best duration-to-scenery ratio. The 5-hour cruise with a stop at Boldt Castle on the American side (CAD 80) requires a valid passport and an approved ESTA for entry into the United States.

Planning your trip: flights, eTA and accommodation

Flights from London, eTA and accommodation

~8h flight eTA: CAD 7 Hotel: CAD 150–220/night Book 3–6 months ahead

Air Canada operates the only non-stop service between London Heathrow (LHR) and Ottawa (YOW), ramping up to 4 flights per week for summer 2026 on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (~8 hours). Return fares start from around £365 in June 2026, rising to £450–600 around 1 July. Booking 4–6 months ahead is strongly recommended. British Airways flies to Toronto Pearson (YYZ) from Heathrow with onward connections to Ottawa — useful if you plan to end your road trip in Toronto.

British citizens must obtain an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before boarding any flight to Canada. The process takes a few minutes on the official Canadian immigration website — it costs CAD 7 (approximately £4), is valid for 5 years and is linked to your passport. Without an eTA, you will be denied boarding. It is not a visa: no appointment, no biometrics, just an online form.

Highlights

  • Lord Elgin Hotel (6 min walk from Parliament) and Arc The Hotel Ottawa (0.7 km) — two classics for Canada Day, book now
  • Fairmont Château Laurier (opposite the Rideau Canal) — Ottawa’s iconic hotel, from CAD 400/night around 1 July
  • Hostels available from CAD 35/night in a dormitory — a budget-friendly option for solo travellers
  • On 1 July: OC Transpo (buses + O-Train) is entirely free, Wellington and Sparks Streets are pedestrianised from 6:00 am to 2:00 am — do not drive
Note: Do not confuse Canada Day with the Fête nationale du Québec (Saint-Jean-Baptiste, 24 June). If your stay covers the week of 22–29 June, you can combine both celebrations — see our dedicated article on the Québec National Holiday in Québec City.

Frequently asked questions — Canada Day 2026 Ottawa

When are the Canada Day 2026 fireworks in Ottawa?

The Tim Hortons fireworks launch on 1 July 2026 at 10:00 pm sharp from LeBreton Flats Park, on the banks of the Ottawa River. The show lasts 15 minutes and is synchronised to a Canadian music soundtrack. The best viewing spots are LeBreton Flats (direct view), Parc Jacques-Cartier in Gatineau (view of Parliament), and the Voyageurs Trail on the north bank. According to rove.me, Portage Bridge and the Zibi grounds also offer good, less crowded vantage points.

Is Canada Day in Ottawa completely free?

Yes, entirely free. The ceremonies on Parliament Hill, the concerts at LeBreton Flats, the interactive activities, OC Transpo public transport (buses and O-Train) and STO (Gatineau) are all free on 1 July. In addition, seven national museums in Ottawa — including the Canadian War Museum, the Canadian Museum of Nature and the Canada Aviation and Space Museum — open their doors for free on that day. According to the Canadian government, free museum entry may require online booking — arrive early to be safe.

How do I plan an Ontario road trip after Canada Day?

Hire a car at Ottawa Airport YOW (from CAD 30/day for an economy). The classic 5-day itinerary after Canada Day: Day 3 Gananoque (1000 Islands, 150 km / 1h 30 min) for the 3-hour cruise with views of Boldt Castle, Day 4 Kingston (30 km further) for Fort Henry, then Days 5–6 Toronto (260 km / 2h 45 min) and finally Niagara Falls (130 km / 1h 15 min). Highway 401 is entirely toll-free. The Canada Strong Pass 2026 (active until 7 September) gives free access to Parks Canada national parks, including the Thousand Islands National Park.

Do UK citizens need a visa to visit Canada in 2026?

No, British passport holders do not need a visa for Canada. However, an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is mandatory before boarding any flight to Canada. The application is made online on the official Canadian government website in a few minutes, costs CAD 7 (approximately £4) and is valid for 5 years. The eTA is linked to your passport — a new passport requires a new eTA. Without an eTA, the airline will refuse boarding. Apply at least 72 hours before your flight.

What is the best way to get around Ontario on the road trip?

A hire car is essential for the Ontario road trip — intercity public transport (limited bus services, VIA Rail trains) exists but is impractical for exploring the 1000 Islands or Niagara. According to Destination Ontario, Highway 401 connects Ottawa to Niagara toll-free. In Ottawa and Toronto, public transport (O-Train, TTC) is efficient for sightseeing without a car. A Canada eSIM (see practical section above) is handy for using Google Maps on the road.

What is the Canada Strong Pass 2026 and how can I use it?

The Canada Strong Pass 2026 is a federal government programme running from 19 June to 7 September 2026. It offers: free entry to all Parks Canada national parks and historic sites (including the Thousand Islands), 25% off Parks Canada camping, free entry to national museums for under-18s and 50% off for 18–24-year-olds. According to canada.ca, no registration or app is required — the benefits apply automatically at the entrance to sites. Ideal for July travellers combining Ottawa and the Ontario road trip.
