Gurtenfestival 2026 runs from Wednesday 15 to Saturday 18 July on the Gurten hill at 858 m, overlooking Bern. 43rd edition, 61 artists confirmed across 7 stages, up to 27,000 festival-goers per day. Headliners: Lorde, Sean Paul, Lily Allen, Kraftklub, Nina Chuba. Day tickets from CHF 131 (approx. £122 at June 2026 rates); children born in 2014 or later get in free. Public transport included. Wednesday is already sold out — the first time in festival history. Book now for the remaining days.
Picture watching Lorde or Sean Paul perform with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau as your backdrop — that’s what Gurtenfestival delivers every July. Since 1977, this Bernese festival has transformed the Gurten hill into an open-air live music stage, reached by a historic funicular running since 1899. Its 43rd edition (15–18 July 2026) is the most ambitious yet: capacity raised to 27,000 visitors a day, a world-class international lineup and a Waldbühne forest stage reserved for emerging Swiss talent. From London, Bern is reachable by Eurostar + TGV Lyria + SBB in around 7–8 hours — and this guide covers everything you need to plan your trip: daily programme, tickets, getting there from the UK, and how to make the most of Bern before and after the concerts.
1. The Gurten: Switzerland’s most spectacular festival setting

Bern’s local mountain at 858 m altitude
The Gurtenkulm peaks at 858 metres, sitting 218 metres above Bern. According to Switzerland Tourism, on a clear day you can see the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau all the way to the Jura ridge (Chasseral) — an unmatched alpine panorama as a concert backdrop. A 22-metre wooden observation tower (121 steps) offers a 360-degree view. Outside the festival season, Gurten Park is a full family leisure site: a century-old miniature railway, a 500 m toboggan run, the Gurtenseeli lake and a giant adventure playground.
The Gurtenbahn funicular has been running from Wabern station to the summit since 12 September 1899. During the festival, it carries up to 130,000 people over four days. The five-minute ride is part of the Gurten experience — and your festival ticket includes it, along with all Bern public transport (Libero zones 100/101).
Highlights
- Panoramic views of the Bernese Alps (Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau) from the Main Stage
- Access via a historic funicular in operation since 1899 — included in your ticket
- 6 music stages + 1 Forum (podcasts, talks) spread across multiple levels of the hill
- Waldbühne woodland stage: intimate forest setting, 100% Swiss artists (including emerging talent)
- Fully cashless site with 100% local food and drink suppliers from the Bern region
2. Gurtenfestival 2026 lineup: headliners day by day

61 artists across 7 stages, 4 nights of live music
According to the official Gurtenfestival 2026 programme, 61 artists perform across seven stages between 15 and 18 July. The festival maintains a 50% female artist ratio throughout its programming. The 43rd edition strikes a rare balance between international pop, the German-speaking music scene and discoveries on the Waldbühne.
Wednesday 15 July — Gates open at 2 pm, concerts from 3 pm. Main Stage: Say She She (5 pm), Sean Paul (7:45 pm) — the dancehall pioneer behind « Get Busy » (US Billboard Hot 100 #1 in 2002, the first dancehall track to reach that position) — and Teddy Swims (10:30 pm) in an exclusive European date on his 2026 tour, bringing his Marvin Gaye-influenced soul/R&B to the Alps.
Thursday 16 July — Gates open at noon. Main Stage: Brandão Faber Hunger (5:30 pm), a rare Swiss supergroup uniting Faber, Sophie Hunger and Dino Brandao; Lily Allen (8:45 pm), whose autobiographical album « West End Girl » marks one of the decade’s great comebacks; Lorde (11:45 pm), the first headliner announced for the 43rd edition, returning with « Virgin » and the « Ultrasound » tour.
Friday 17 July — Gates open at noon. Main Stage: Kraftklub (11:45 pm), the Chemnitz band whose album « Sterben in Karl-Marx-Stadt » (May 2025) went straight to the top of the German and Austrian charts. Secondary stages feature Digitalism (Tent Stage, 10 pm) and the Cosmodrome’s electronic night.
Saturday 18 July — Gates open at noon. Main Stage: Son Rompe Pera (2:45 pm), the Mexican marimba/cumbia/punk fusion group praised by the Los Angeles Times; Ezra Collective (5:30 pm), the first jazz group to win the Mercury Prize (2023); Lo & Leduc (8:30 pm), the Bernese duo who recorded their live album on the Gurten itself in 2023; Nina Chuba (11:45 pm) — her comeback after illness forced a cancellation in 2025, returning with « Ich lieb mich, ich lieb mich nicht » which has dominated the German-speaking charts.
3. The 7 stages: a uniquely vertical festival map

From the open-air Main Stage to the forest Waldbühne
The Gurtenfestival site spreads across several levels of the hill, creating radically different atmospheres depending on the time and stage you choose. This vertical festival geography, impossible to replicate on flat ground, is one of the festival’s defining signatures.
The Main Stage is the open-air flagship stage, facing the Alps — this is where the big headliners perform with the Alpine chain as their backdrop. The Tent Stage hosts emerging pop and electronic acts in a more intimate, covered setting. The Waldbühne — the woodland stage — is reserved exclusively for Swiss artists, including the Waldbühne Contest 2026 winners (selected on 28 February 2026 at Mühle Hunziken, Rubigen). It’s the most distinctive stage of the festival.
Come evening and into the night, the Soundgarden and Cosmodrome take over with a cutting-edge electronic programme running until 4 am. The Supermercado keeps things festive and eclectic. The Forum hosts panels, live podcasts and comedy sets during the daytime.
Highlights
- Main Stage with a direct view of the Bernese Alps — a truly unique concert + alpine landscape combo
- Waldbühne: intimate woodland atmosphere, 100% Swiss artists (including emerging acts)
- Cosmodrome & Soundgarden: electronic party until dawn for the night owls
- Forum: talks, live podcasts, comedy — cultural depth beyond the music

Getting there from the UK
From London, the most sustainable option is the train: Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris (from £52 one-way, ~2h20), then a TGV Lyria from Paris to Basel (from €29, ~3h), followed by an SBB Swiss intercity from Basel to Bern (~58 min). Total journey: around 7–8 hours. Note that between 1 June and 24 July 2026, some TGV Lyria services terminate at Basel due to engineering works — check your connection before booking. Flying from Heathrow or Gatwick to Bern Airport (BRN) takes around 1h50 with a short transfer into the city.
Getting around on site
Your festival ticket (or wristband) includes two transport perks: the Gurtenbahn funicular (from Wabern lower station) and bus/tram/S-Bahn across Libero zones 100/101. From Bern Hauptbahnhof, take tram no. 9 to Wabern (15 min) or the S1/S31 train (10 min). The funicular runs every 15 minutes and until 5:30 am on concert nights. In 2026, wristband exchange takes place in the Gurten car park at Wabern (not the usual station — roadworks in the area).
You can walk up via two marked paths: the main one from the Gurtenbahn (20–40 min, steeper) or the gentler route from bus no. 19 (Spiegel/Blinzern, 35–45 min). In 2025, roughly 20% of festival-goers chose this second route to avoid the funicular queues.
Cashless payments on site
The entire site is cashless: a personal contactless card is handed out when you collect your wristband, rechargeable online at cashless.gurtenfestival.ch up to CHF 500. Automatic top-up is available (CHF 100 added when your balance drops below CHF 50). Unused balance is refunded within 7 days of the festival.
Highlights
- 4-day pass at CHF 367 (~£343): best value for those staying the full weekend
- Public transport included in the ticket — no extra cost to get around Bern
- Cashless card: no queues at tills, top it up remotely before you arrive
- Children born in 2014 or later: free entry (ID required)
5. Bern beyond the festival: what to see in the city

Switzerland’s underrated capital, a UNESCO World Heritage city
Bern has been Switzerland’s federal capital since 1848 and is the country’s fourth-largest city with 145,000 inhabitants. Its medieval old town, perched on a rocky spur surrounded by the River Aare, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Its 6 km of covered arcades (the Lauben) let you stroll under cover — handy when the summer thunderstorms that can roll in without warning at altitude. According to Bern Welcome, the 16 sixteenth-century fountains with their painted allegorical figures are a unique heritage in Europe.
The Zytglogge (twelfth-century astronomical clock tower) triggers a carousel of animated figures four minutes before every hour — a free spectacle not to be missed. The BärenPark on the banks of the Aare (free entry year-round) is home to the bears that are the city’s symbol. For a breathtaking view over the old town and the Aare, the Rosengarten (rose garden) is ideal for a picnic. In July, the local tradition of wild swimming in the Aare (between Marzili and Eichholz) is free — a summer pleasure that the Bernese are happy to share with visitors.
For festival-goers who want to explore Bern through a local lens before or after a show, a guided walking tour is ideal — it covers Swiss federal politics, the old town’s history and its fountains in around two hours.

6. Sustainability and festival values

A measured environmental footprint since 2010
Since 2010, Gurtenfestival AG has set itself the goal that « the festival’s ecological footprint should be no larger than that of everyday life. » In practice, according to Eurotravelo, all food stalls are run by operators from the Bern region and only Swiss meat is served. Every stall must offer vegetarian and vegan options. Reusable crockery is thermally recycled to generate energy for the city of Bern.
500 volunteers are mobilised at each edition. The festival’s annual economic impact is estimated at CHF 30 million for the Bern region. The official code of conduct sets out its values clearly: consent (« Only yes means yes »), respect, diversity and unity (« One mountain, one passion »).
Highlights
- 100% local food stalls (Bern region): regional produce including rösti, fondue and Swiss bratwurst
- Reusable crockery thermally recycled to produce city energy
- Public transport included in the ticket to reduce car use
- Inclusive code of conduct and consent policy — displayed across the site
