San Diego Comic-Con 2026: A Global Pop Culture Gathering

It all began on 21 March 1970 with a pilot event for around a hundred enthusiasts, the « Golden State Comic-Minicon », organised by Shel Dorf and eleven other comics and science-fiction fans. A few months later, the first full convention ran from 1 to 3 August 1970 at San Diego’s U.S. Grant Hotel, with Ray Bradbury and Jack Kirby as guests, in front of roughly 300 attendees. According to Wikipedia, the convention passed 48,500 attendees by 2000, then hit its maximum capacity, more than 135,000 badge holders, every year since 2010.

The organisation behind this global event stays surprisingly lean: Comic-Con International, the trading name of the non-profit San Diego Comic Convention, runs with a 13-member board, a permanent staff of 16 to 20, and around 80 volunteers. According to the official Comic-Con site, the organisation also runs WonderCon (its sister convention in Anaheim since 2001), the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park (opened November 2021), and the Eisner Awards, the industry’s benchmark comics honours since 1987.

Comic-Con 2026 badges have been sold out since Open Registration closed on 15 November 2025, following an earlier wave reserved for existing members (Returning Registration) on 4 October 2025. According to comic-con.org, there’s no official ticketing left for this edition: the next sale window covers the 2027 event, opening in autumn 2026.

For reference when planning a future edition, a 4-day badge with Preview Night (Wednesday 22 July) comes to around $398 all in (roughly £301), that’s $383 plus a $15 processing fee per member. Badges are strictly non-transferable: unique barcode, RFID chip, and photo ID checks on entry. According to the Better Business Bureau, fake badge sellers on Craigslist or eBay remain a recurring scam every year.

After sitting out 2025, Marvel Studios returns to Hall H in 2026 for its traditional Saturday-evening slot. According to The Wrap, the Saturday 25 July panel is expected to focus on Avengers: Doomsday (due out December 2026), with hopes for news on Secret Wars, Black Panther III, or the X-Men reboot.

Marvel won’t be the only headliner: HBO Max is backing Lanterns, the Green Lantern series from Damon Lindelof and Tom King, plus Peacemaker; Amazon Prime Video is expected for Wheel of Time; and AMC premieres The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 on Sunday 26 July, the convention’s closing day. On the comics side, waves of special guests bring in respected creators like Jim Lee, Mark Waid, and J. Michael Straczynski, worth noting that at Comic-Con, official « Special Guests » are almost always writers and artists, rarely Hollywood stars.

Without a badge, Comic-Con week is far from wasted. The Gaslamp Quarter and Petco Park host dozens of free activations open to everyone every year. According to FanCon.ai, the Crunchyroll Anime Music Festival runs Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July at Gallagher Square (Petco Park), headlined by SPYAIR, yama, Denzel Curry and INIKO, free entry. The Hello Kitty Cafe Truck sets up in the same stadium’s Interactive Zone, and the Fandom Party at the Hard Rock Hotel brings together The Coverups, featuring Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, alongside a Halo/Xbox gaming experience.

The Gaslamp Quarter itself is worth the visit, badge or not: 16.5 pedestrian blocks on the National Register of Historic Places, around a hundred Victorian buildings, and more than 100 restaurants and bars, on the old stomping ground of Sheriff Wyatt Earp, who once lived there. A few minutes’ walk from the convention centre, the USS Midway Museum on the Embarcadero remains San Diego’s most-visited attraction: an aircraft carrier with the longest service record of the 20th century, with 29 restored aircraft on its flight deck. According to San Diego Tourism Authority, Balboa Park alone holds 18 museums, including the San Diego Zoo and the Comic-Con Museum, which opened in November 2021 inside the historic 1935 Federal Building.

Comic-Con’s numbers are impressive, but the event also carries well-documented tensions. In July 2024, organisers publicly called out the local hotel industry: rooms running $200 a night in the official block climb past $600 outside it, roughly £151 to £454, 2 to 3 times the normal seasonal rate. According to Forbes, Comic-Con International spokesperson David Glanzer raised the possibility of the event leaving San Diego if the situation became unmanageable, a scarcity dynamic not unlike the one facing another sold-out-every-year Californian gathering, the Coachella festival.

Ticketing has had its share of stumbles too: on 26 October 2024, the Open Registration launch ended in a total server meltdown, before a successful relaunch the following month. The lottery system that replaced first-come-first-served is still criticised: no guarantee of a badge, even for an eligible member. In April 2026, the Gaslamp Quarter Association went as far as filing legal action against the city to enforce public-space rules, arguing that street vendors had become too invasive. According to OneZero, overcrowding remains the most widely shared complaint among regulars.

Looking further ahead, the City of San Diego (Mayor Todd Gloria) confirmed in December 2024 that it will host Comic-Con through 2027, but nothing is locked in beyond that. The Los Angeles 2028 Olympics (14-30 July) overlap with the convention’s traditional dates, with surfing events set for Lower Trestles Beach in San Diego County. According to Popverse, a relocation or a gap year are scenarios the organisation has openly discussed.

Good news if you’re flying from the UK: British Airways operates a nonstop service between London Heathrow and San Diego (flight BA273 outbound, BA272 on the way back), taking around 11 hours 20 minutes each way, no layover required. It’s currently the only airline flying this exact route nonstop; the only other direct links from continental Europe are Amsterdam (KLM) and Munich, where Lufthansa’s roughly 11h05 flight is the longest nonstop service from Europe. UK citizens travel under the Visa Waiver Program’s ESTA authorisation: an online formality that now costs $40 (~£30), the fee doubled from $21 in September 2025, typically processed within 72 hours, and valid for stays of up to 90 days, for up to two years overall. Applications go exclusively through esta.cbp.dhs.gov; plenty of third-party sites charge inflated « service fees » for the same process.
