Catamaran or traditional sailboat: it comes down to your tolerance for seasickness and your budget. The catamaran dominates the Santorini market by far (near-perfect stability, €125 to €150 per adult on group tours) and remains the default choice for most travellers. The traditional sailboat, rarer, trades on authenticity and a smaller group of 10 to 20 people, at the cost of a bit more rolling. Our selection of 10 experiences, 5 catamarans and 3 sailboats, helps you decide based on your profile.

Santorini sunset: the question isn’t really whether you’re booking a cruise anymore, but which one. Before we go further, one point of vocabulary worth clarifying: a catamaran is, technically, also a sailboat. But in everyday use on Santorini, « sailboat » refers to monohull boats — traditional wooden caïques or classic sailing yachts — as opposed to the twin-hulled catamaran. That’s the distinction that matters for your choice, not the technical definition.

On the ground, the catamaran dominates the market by far (41 products under that tag alone on Viator) and remains the default choice for most travellers: near-perfect stability, a spacious deck, a generous open bar. The traditional sailboat appeals to a different profile, chasing authenticity and a smaller group, at the cost of a bit more rolling. Neither option is objectively better: it all depends on your sensitivity to seasickness, your budget and the atmosphere you’re after.

I’ve selected 10 experiences to help you decide: 5 catamarans, from the most popular to the most intimate, 3 traditional sailboats for those chasing authenticity, and 2 boat-free alternatives for those who’d rather keep their feet on dry land. If you only remember one option, the premium catamaran cruise with barbecue and open bar remains Santorini’s most popular, with over 7,000 reviews.

Why this sunset has a worldwide reputation

Cliffs of the Santorini caldera at sunset

Santorini owes its current shape to the collapse of a volcano after the Minoan eruption, roughly 3,600 years ago [Wikipedia]. That collapse created a caldera [Q2071883] measuring roughly 12 by 7 kilometres, bordered on three sides by 300-metre cliffs that plunge straight into the Aegean Sea. It’s this particular geometry — a west-facing wall with nothing to block the horizon — that explains why this specific sunset became world-famous, well beyond just another sunset over the sea.

Oia [Q1655349], built on the island’s north-western tip, draws the biggest crowds every evening: you need to arrive 45 minutes to an hour before sunset to find a spot at Oia Castle. Fira [Q617169], the capital, offers a wider view over the caldera but a slightly less dramatic one. It’s this crowding on land that pushes a good number of travellers out to sea: offshore, the view stays clear, far from the crowds packed onto the land-based viewpoints. If you’re combining Santorini with other islands, our 3-day Cyclades itinerary also covers Mykonos and Naxos, and our pick of lesser-known Greek islands beyond Santorini opens up even more options.

As for timing, the Meltemi wind blows from May to September, peaking from mid-July to mid-August; operators sometimes adjust or cancel sailings on days of strong wind. May and the mid-September to October window offer the best balance of weather, crowds and water temperature.

Catamaran side — maximum stability and a sociable atmosphere (5 options):

1. Premium catamaran cruise with barbecue and open bar

Rating 4.95 (7102 reviews) 5h €135 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

This is the safe bet of my catamaran picks: boarding at Vlychada, snorkelling off the Red and White beaches, and an open bar that keeps flowing through the 5-hour sail. With more than 7,000 reviews, it’s objectively the most-tested product in all of Santorini, a real mark of consistency. The air-conditioned minibus hotel transfer simplifies logistics, especially if you’re staying far from the port.

  • The most-reviewed product in the whole selection (7,102 reviews)
  • Snorkelling, open bar and a full Greek meal included on board
  • Round-trip hotel transfer in an air-conditioned minibus

2. Half-day catamaran with a dedicated sunset departure from Oia

Rating 4.97 (1476 reviews) 5h €136 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

If sunset is your only priority, this is the catamaran I’d recommend first: it’s the only one in my selection with a departure point specific to the evening slot, at Ammoudi, right below Oia. The glass of Prosecco added to the classic open bar makes a real difference to the mood. I also like that vegetarian and vegan meals are included by default, no need to request them.

  • Only dedicated sunset-slot departure, from Ammoudi (Oia)
  • A glass of Prosecco included on top of the open bar
  • Vegetarian and vegan menus available on request

3. Catamaran with volcanic hot springs and the Red & White beaches

Rating 4.85 (1707 reviews) 5h €150 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

This one combines two experiences in one: a swim at the volcanic hot springs of Nea Kameni and the sunset, with photo stops at the Red and White beaches in between. The professional Greek skipper and crew keep the sailing relaxed, without the rush of a big, hurried group. If you only do one boat trip in Santorini, this is probably the best day-and-evening compromise.

  • Swim at the Nea Kameni volcanic hot springs included
  • Photo stops at the Red and White beaches before sunset
  • Professional Greek skipper and crew on board

4. Luxury Lagoon 560 catamaran cruise at sunset

Rating 4.83 (1299 reviews) 5h €125 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

Watch out for this product’s listing name on some platforms: despite a mention of « sailing », this is in fact a catamaran, the largest Lagoon model on the island. Sunset is baked right into the name and the route, with snorkelling gear and floating mats included for anyone who wants to extend the swim. The safety briefing printed in five languages, including English, is a small reassuring touch for a first outing at sea.

5. Private catamaran for an exclusive cruise

Rating 4.94 (488 reviews) 5h €625 per adult (based on 2 people) Private tour

Same operator as my top pick, but in a fully private version: no other passengers on board, just you and your guests. The menu and open bar stay identical to the group formula, which makes it excellent value for the exclusivity on offer, for a marriage proposal or an occasion worth marking. The price climbs accordingly, but the full privatisation is well worth it for an evening like that.

  • Full privatisation: no other passengers on board
  • Menu and open bar identical to the small-group version
  • A favourite choice for a marriage proposal or a private occasion

Traditional sailboat side — authenticity and calm (3 options):

6. Traditional wooden caïque with a stop in Thirassia

Rating 4.82 (231 reviews) 5h €100 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

Here’s the first of the three traditional sailboats in my selection, and the one I’d recommend first if you want the most authentic experience: a genuine wooden Greek caïque, with a stop in Thirassia for a swim before dinner. The meal is served in a sheltered cove, just before the sun dips behind the caldera, a noticeably more intimate setting than a 50-person catamaran.

  • A genuine wooden Greek caïque, the exact opposite of a catamaran
  • Stop in Thirassia for swimming and snorkelling
  • Greek dinner served in a sheltered cove before sunset

7. Semi-private sailboat departing from Ammoudi Bay

Rating 4.98 (109 reviews) 6h €150 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

This is the highest rating in my entire sailboat selection, and the closest departure point to Oia’s legendary viewpoint: you leave directly from Ammoudi Bay. Capacity is deliberately capped at 16 or 20 guests depending on the package, far below catamaran standards. I also like the choice between an onboard barbecue dinner or a private taverna dinner on Thirassia, depending on your mood that evening.

  • Departs from Ammoudi Bay, the closest jetty to Oia’s sunset spot
  • Capacity deliberately capped at 16 or 20 guests
  • Choice between an onboard barbecue or a private taverna dinner on Thirassia

Private 44-foot sailing yacht off the coast of Santorini
Source: Viator

8. Private sailing yacht for an intimate outing

Rating 5.0 (91 reviews) 5h €538 per adult (based on 2 people) Private tour

The most intimate formula in this whole comparison: a 44-foot sailing yacht, skippered by a captain from the merchant navy, for a maximum of 10 passengers. It’s a family-run business (Angel Sailing), and it shows in the service and the flexible scheduling on offer. The price stays surprisingly close to the equivalent private catamaran in my selection, despite a far more exclusive format.

  • 44-foot sailing yacht, captain from the merchant navy
  • Family-run business: up to 10 passengers in full exclusivity
  • The most intimate option in the whole sailboat selection

9. Wine tasting facing the sunset, no boat required

Rating 4.95 (1886 reviews) 4h €150 to €175 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

If the very idea of stepping onto a boat makes you anxious, here’s the best alternative I found: the same sunset, seen from a vineyard instead of a rolling deck. Twelve tastings spread across three of the island’s wineries, with an oenologist guide who explains the local Assyrtiko grape, cheese and snacks included. Zero risk of seasickness, and the mood stays just as festive.

  • 12 tastings spread across 3 Santorini wineries
  • The same sunset, with zero risk of seasickness
  • Local oenologist guide included, with cheese and snacks

10. Fira, Oia and beach small-group excursion

Rating 4.87 (431 reviews) 10h30 €90 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

The most budget-friendly land alternative in my selection, and a good option if you want to see several sides of the island in a single afternoon: Fira, a beach break, then sunset in Oia in a small group. Slots run a bit scarcer than on the other products in this list, so I’d book as early as possible rather than at the last minute.

  • Combines Fira, a beach and the Oia sunset in one afternoon
  • Small group, capped at 18 people
  • The most budget-friendly land alternative in the selection

On-the-ground tips

The public bus connects Fira to the main villages, but timetables thin out sharply outside peak season: it’s worth checking the schedule posted at Fira’s bus station the day before rather than trusting an app. To reach Vlychada or Ammoudi in time for a boarding, build in a generous margin: the island’s roads are narrow and jam easily in the late afternoon, at the exact moment everyone converges on the sunset.

If you’re departing from Ammoudi, keep in mind that the village of Oia sits roughly 300 steps up the cliff: wear proper shoes, especially on the way back in the dim light. Pack a light windbreaker even in summer, open water is almost always cooler and windier than land, especially late in the day when the Meltemi is still blowing.

For seasickness, a tablet taken 30 to 60 minutes before boarding makes a real difference, whichever boat you choose. And if your flight stops over in Athens, the Acropolis is worth a stop, private guide or audio guide depending on your time on the ground, as is a trip to Delphi if you have a spare day before heading on to Santorini.

Frequently asked questions

Catamaran or traditional sailboat: which should I choose if I’m prone to seasickness?

The catamaran, without hesitation. Its twin hull sharply limits rolling compared with a monohull: the dominant motion is a light front-to-back pitching, not real side-to-side rolling. That’s the main reason it remains the default choice for most travellers in Santorini.

Isn’t a catamaran also a sailboat?

Technically, yes — a catamaran also sails under canvas. But in everyday use on Santorini, « sailboat » refers to monohull boats: traditional wooden caïques or classic sailing yachts, as opposed to the twin-hulled catamaran. It’s this distinction, not the technical definition, that matters when choosing your cruise.

Catamaran or sailboat: which one is cheaper?

The two options overlap heavily on group tours. Our cheapest sailboat option starts at €100 per adult, against €125 for the most affordable catamaran in the selection. It’s mainly on private tours that the gap narrows in the sailboat’s favour.

Where do Santorini sunset cruises depart from, Vlychada or Ammoudi?

Both jetties are in use. Vlychada Marina, on the south of the island, mainly serves day-trip and volcano tours. Ammoudi Bay, below Oia, is the dedicated meeting point for « sunset » packages: it’s the departure point for, among others, our catamaran dedicated to the evening slot.

Is there a boat-free option to see the same sunset?

Yes. A wine tasting at a west-facing vineyard or a land excursion combining Fira, a beach and Oia both cover the same sunset without heading out to sea, a good option if seasickness or budget is holding you back.

What’s the best time of year for a Santorini sunset cruise?

May or the mid-September to October window offer the best balance of weather, crowds and water temperature. July-August is still workable but busier, and the Meltemi wind can push some operators to adjust or cancel daytime sailings.
