Saint-Paul-de-Vence is an easy day trip from Nice by bus, by car (35 to 40 minutes depending on traffic) or on a guided tour. The village takes three or four hours to visit, so a full day only makes sense with a second stop: Vence, Grasse, Gourdon, Èze or the Fondation Maeght. The nine options in this selection range from €92 to €335 per adult (based on 2 people), from a 7-hour shared tour to a private tour. For a good balance between price and time on site, the 8-hour shared day remains the simplest choice.

I set out from Nice with one simple question: is a day in Saint-Paul-de-Vence really worth it? The village is small, but a visit with its galleries and ramparts takes three to four hours. Sources recommend arriving before 10 a.m., before the coaches arrive. Yet it is one of the places on the Côte d’Azur where the link between the hinterland and modern art is easiest to grasp. A good day therefore means choosing a way of getting there, then a second stop.

For this selection, I kept nine Viator excursions from Nice, with solid ratings and availability checked over the window from 9 October to 7 November 2026. On paper, the strongest option remains the 8-hour shared tour of Grasse, Gourdon, Tourrettes-sur-Loup and Saint-Paul, with 319 reviews and a guide who holds a university degree. The other formulas range from a half-day at the Fragonard perfume factory to a private tour combining Èze and Saint-Paul. Each one is presented with what it offers and what it leaves out, because no single one covers the ideal day on its own.

Why Saint-Paul-de-Vence is worth a day: the Pixidia angle

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes, perched behind its ramparts. Its position on the border shaped its history: Vauban inspected the fortifications at the end of the 17th century, then the County of Nice joined France in 1860 and the village lost its military role (Provence7). The lanes and gates still carry the trace of that era.

The village attracted painters in the early 20th century. Signac, Dufy and Soutine worked there, and the Colombe d’Or inn hosted passing artists, among them Matisse, Picasso and Léger, who left works on its walls. Marc Chagall lived there from 1966 until his death in 1985; he is buried in the cemetery at the far end of the village. Today, the walk mostly follows the Grand-Rue and the side lanes, where artists’ studios and galleries take up a good share of the streets.

What makes a day here is what you add to the village. The Fondation Maeght, opened in 1964 and designed by the Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert, houses a collection of 20th-century art and a sculpture garden (official site). By estimate, it lies about fifteen minutes’ walk from the village, up a steep climb. It is the stop that justifies staying longer, and none of the options in this selection includes it.

This is the most proven option in the selection, with 319 reviews and a 4.82 rating. The group is capped at 16 people, which leaves room in the narrow village streets. Saint-Paul comes last on the announced itinerary, after Grasse, Gourdon and Tourrettes.

2. Four medieval villages, in an air-conditioned vehicle

Rated 4.84 (129 reviews) 8 hours €125 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

Same route as the first option, with a very close rating (4.84) from 129 reviews. The trip is made in an air-conditioned vehicle, and each village leaves time for a free stroll. The pickup point still needs confirming: the listing shows several addresses in Nice without naming them, so check before booking.

  • Air-conditioned vehicle
  • Pickup and drop-off in Nice
  • Guide and free time in each village

3. Fragonard and the hinterland, in half a day

Rated 4.8 (132 reviews) 5 hours €110 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

For those with only a few hours, this half-day focuses on the Fragonard perfume factory in Grasse and the hinterland. Saint-Paul appears only in the title: the listing mostly describes Grasse and the neighbouring villages, without specifying the visiting order. The group is limited to 8 people, and departures are spread over about twenty of the thirty days tested.

  • Stop at the Fragonard perfume factory in Grasse
  • 5-hour format, 8 places
  • Air-conditioned vehicle

4. Antibes, Cannes then Saint-Paul: the coast first

Rated 4.59 (332 reviews) 7 hours €92 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

This is the least expensive option in the selection, and the one with the most reviews (332), with a more modest rating of 4.59. The itinerary starts on the coast: Antibes, then Cannes, before heading back up to Saint-Paul at the end of the day. Time spent in the village therefore depends on when you return.

Rated 4.69 (70 reviews) 8 hours €130 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

This excursion adds Cannes to the programme of hinterland villages. Dates are open across all thirty days tested, which makes it a flexible option for October. The 4.69 rating rests on only 70 reviews, and the listing does not describe the exact departure point: it announces hotel pickup.

This is the highest rating among the shared options (4.94), but based on only 50 reviews. At nine hours of programme, it is also the longest day. The listing describes private transport without naming the departure city: it mentions a bus stop near the post office. Check the exact meeting point before booking.

Rated 4.73 (67 reviews) 9 hours €125 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation

The programme centres on the Saut du Loup and the Fragonard perfume factory, with transfer from your hotel in Nice. The listing does not name Saint-Paul-de-Vence, so I present it as a Provence tour rather than a village excursion. Watch the dates: only nine days are open out of the thirty tested, between 19 October and 6 November.

  • Transfer to and from your hotel
  • Saut du Loup and Fragonard included
  • Nine dates only in the period tested

The private version of the coastal day, for up to 4 people. Departure from Nice is planned, but the listing does not specify the meeting point. Parking fees are included, a detail that matters in a village where parking is tricky. The price shown covers two adults.

Practical tips on site

Without a car, the bus is the cheapest option. A 2024 page (French Riviera Traveller) describes two routes from Nice: the tram to Parc Phoenix, then bus 9 to Vence and bus 655 to Saint-Paul; or the train to Cagnes-sur-Mer, then the 655. Frequencies and fares come from that source, so confirm the line on the Lignes d’Azur website before you go. The 655 ticket is bought from the driver, and a tram ticket is not valid for this connection.

By car, allow 35 to 40 minutes from Nice depending on traffic, via the A8 (exit 48) then road 436. Vehicles do not drive into the village: they park on its outskirts. Arrive before 10 a.m. to find a space on the street, or head for a multi-storey car park at the village entrance. I have not published parking rates, since no official confirmation is available.

For the Fondation Maeght, go in the morning: the museum sits at the top of a steep hill, and the walk down to the village is gentler. Guided visits should be booked in advance, through the tourist office or the online ticket office. Check the full price on the official website, as the listings I consulted are not enough to pin it down. If you travel by bus, the 655 stops before the village: tell the driver.

Save the cemetery for the end of the day. Chagall’s grave is away from the centre, and the streets empty out once the coaches leave.
