Dublin has no single Christmas market in 2026, and no opening on 18 November is confirmed. The reliable dates come from TwinkleTown: Smithfield from 20 November to 31 December, and St Patrick’s Park from 27 November to 23 December. The Dublin Castle market is cancelled, and the Winter Lights have moved to January 2027.

Checked on against the official sources cited (dublin.ie, dublincastle.ie, visitdublin.com, rds.ie).

Dublin’s Christmas markets in 2026 won’t look like a German village. The offer splits between two outdoor winter villages, two markets at the RDS (including Gifted, at €15 for an adult), light trails at Malahide and a few markets just outside the capital. This guide separates what is confirmed by an official source or an organiser, what is not, and what has disappeared. We checked the dates on 21 October 2026: they may still shift before December, and every piece of information links to its source.

If you’re looking for a market on 18 November, the first thing to know is that this date doesn’t appear on any official page that was open when we checked. The sections below give the confirmed calendar, day trips, the best areas in town, traveller profiles and an indicative budget, with a clear status for each item.

1. Confirmed 2026 dates

The dates below come from the Dublin City Council listings, Visit Dublin and the RDS website. We read them directly on those pages, or from search engine extracts when a page wouldn’t load in full. The status column shows what has been checked and what still needs confirming, especially prices.

Source: dublin.ie, Visit Dublin, RDS, Dublin Castle, checked on 21 October 2026.

Not checked in our sources, so read the organisers’ pages before you go:

  • opening hours for TwinkleTown, Everwinter and Gifted (on dublin.ie and rds.ie);
  • postal addresses: only the venues are given (Smithfield Square, St Patrick’s Park, RDS Ballsbridge);
  • ticketing: for Wonderlights and Santa, check the Malahide Castle website. We found no ticket page for the other events.

The two TwinkleTown sites have separate dates, shown in the table above. Guides often present them as a single period, which throws off a plan.

The calendar is concentrated between the second half of November and early December. After 23 December, only TwinkleTown at Smithfield and the Malahide light trails remain, with Wonderlights running until 29 December. 25 and 26 December are public holidays (Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day): many shops and transport services run on reduced timetables, and the 2026 hours for those days were not published in the sources we checked.

2. The « 18 November market »: an unconfirmed date

18 November 2026 is a Wednesday. One search engine extract attributes this date to Dublin Tourism, with an end on 22 December. We did not find this date on Dublin Tourism’s « Christmas in Dublin » page, which we consulted several times, most recently on 21 October 2026, nor in the city’s listings. This guide therefore treats it as unconfirmed.

In practice, don’t book a flight or a hotel on the strength of an 18 November opening alone. The nearest firm date is the TwinkleTown opening at Smithfield on 20 November. The 2026 switch-on of the Christmas lights had not been published at the time of checking: don’t plan around it as a firm date.

To settle the question before you travel, two pages are enough: the dublin.ie listings and Dublin Tourism’s « Christmas in Dublin » page. If an official 18 November date appears, this guide will need to be reviewed before we recommend it.

3. The Dublin Castle market: cancelled in 2026

This is the biggest change from older guides. The Dublin Castle market, long presented as the city’s reference market, is not taking place in 2026. The castle’s official website shows a closure notice: the campus stays closed until January 2027, linked to Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which runs from 1 July to 31 December 2026 (dublincastle.ie, checked on 21 October 2026).

The cancellation wasn’t a surprise in public debate. A DublinPeople article dated 13 November 2025 already reports a councillor’s criticism of the decision to cancel « Christmas at the Castle ». The subject was therefore discussed before the 2026 closure.

Content that still describes this market, with its chalets, mulled wine and free access, is out of date or wrong for 2026. Don’t plan a visit around the castle this season. For a city-centre market, TwinkleTown at Smithfield is the closest option. As for St Stephen’s Green, Dublin Tourism says no market is planned there this year: a large chalet market was held there in 2014, with no return since.

4. Day trips from Dublin: Glendalough, Malahide, Howth and Swords

Day trips complement the city offer. Malahide is the only place where both festive attractions are confirmed by Visit Dublin. Glendalough has no confirmed festive programme, but it remains the most direct day out of the city. Howth and Swords need more caution: the markets advertised there don’t appear in official sources.

Glendalough, the monastic valley of Wicklow

Bus 181: €13 one way (to confirm) 75 to 90 min journey Short light in the late afternoon

Glendalough is an ancient monastic site, nestled in a glacial valley in County Wicklow, with paths along the mountainside. Bus 181, the St Kevin’s Bus, takes around 75 to 90 minutes from the city centre, according to a timetable aggregator. An older listing says it leaves from Dawson Street, in front of the Mansion House. Out of season the day is short: the sun sets early, and there isn’t enough light for a long walk in the late afternoon.

Highlights

  • An ancient monastic site at the heart of a mountain valley
  • Direct access from the centre, no car needed
  • A guided full-day option, bookable online
Pixidia tip: check the Bus 181 timetable on glendalough.ie before you set off. The €13 fare comes from an undated listing and must be confirmed with the operator. In winter, take the first departure of the morning to leave yourself some margin.

The bus 181 works if you’re happy with its timetable. The guided tour below suits a different need: it takes care of the connections and the return times, for anyone who would rather not work them out. Its description mentions Glendalough, the Wicklow Mountains and Kilkenny, but check the details on the product page. Timing matters too: at the end of November the light fades in the late afternoon, so an end-of-day trip finishes after dark. The price and availability change with the date and the number of travellers, so check them when you book.

Malahide Castle: Wonderlights and Santa

Wonderlights from €17.50 (to confirm) Wonderlights: 12 Nov. to 29 Dec. Santa: 28 Nov. to 23 Dec.

Malahide is the easiest day out to plan with children. Visit Dublin confirms two attractions: Wonderlights, a light trail through the castle gardens, from 12 November to 29 December 2026, and Santa at Malahide Castle, from 28 November to 23 December. Dublin Tourism gives a Wonderlights ticket from €17.50, but another guide shows a different price. Confirm the price on the castle’s website before you budget the trip. From the centre, the journey is by suburban train on the DART coastal line.

  • The two attractions overlap from 28 November to 23 December
  • Wonderlights stays open until 29 December, after Santa ends
  • Santa’s price was not checked in our sources
Pixidia tip: in December, night falls early. The light trails are outdoors, after dark: pack warm clothes and shoes suited to wet grass.

Howth and Swords: unconfirmed markets

Howth. We found no Christmas market for 2025 or 2026. The only market documented at Howth Castle dates from the 2022-2023 season. The peninsula is still a lovely coastal outing, and the New Year’s Eve fireworks over the harbour took place on 31 December 2025 (Fingal County Council). That event is in the past: don’t plan it as an attraction for this year.

Swords. A third-party guide lists a market at Swords Castle from 27 November to 6 December 2026. The Fingal festive page only shows the 2025 dates, so the information remains unconfirmed. According to the same guide, the setting differs from the centre, with makers and food producers.

5. Where to wander in town during the festive season

In the city centre, the festive offer lives less in chalets than in squares, lit-up streets and pubs. Two areas stand out for a December evening: Temple Bar for the atmosphere, and the TwinkleTown squares for the entertainment.

Temple Bar: pubs, lanes and evening lights

Free on foot Evening Market advertised, dates not checked

Temple Bar sits on the south bank of the Liffey, near Trinity College and Dame Street. It’s one of the city’s liveliest areas for pubs and restaurants. A dublin.ie listing advertises a « Temple Bar Square Christmas Market », but we couldn’t check its dates: don’t put it on a plan without confirmation. The area is worth an evening on foot, with no ticket needed.

Highlights

  • Pubs and restaurants in large numbers, a few steps from each other
  • The Ha’penny Bridge, a pedestrian footbridge over the Liffey
  • A walk that pairs well with the lights on Grafton Street
Pixidia tip: one guide we consulted describes the area as safe by day but busy with partygoers at night. Keep your bag closed in front of you and your phone out of sight while walking.

TwinkleTown: Smithfield and St Patrick’s Park

Free entry at Smithfield Two sites, dates in the Section 1 table Food and drink extra

TwinkleTown runs two separate sites in the city centre, on different dates shown in the Section 1 table. Smithfield Square is free to enter. Food and drink are paid for. To put the scale in context, the press credits the 2025 edition with €12 million in local economic impact (DublinPeople, 12 January 2026). That is a figure reported by the press, and its method is not published.

Highlights

  • Free entry at Smithfield, confirmed by dublin.ie
  • Two separate sites: if you’re only going for one evening, check which one is open that night
Pixidia tip: budget for drinks. A single review in our research mentions a hot drink at €6. One review isn’t a rule, but the food on site is not free.

Grafton, Henry and Mary Street: the street lights

The city centre’s Christmas lights are usually switched on around mid-November, on Mary Street, Grafton Street and Henry Street. In 2025 the switch-on took place on Thursday 13 November on Mary Street (press extract). The 2026 date was not published on the Dublin Tourism page checked on 21 October. One guide also mentions Santa appearing on some weekends on Henry Street, with no confirmed 2026 dates: check before you plan the outing.

If Dublin is just one stop in your December, our guide to the Vienna Christmas markets covers the dates and opening hours at Rathausplatz, and our Christmas experiences in London sets out the activities you can book. If you’re torn between Dublin and a day trip from the city, our comparison of the Cliffs of Moher and Glendalough from Dublin helps you choose.

6. Which programme suits your profile

7. Indicative budget

Christmas prices in Dublin are rarely published in advance. The table separates prices found on an open source, prices still to confirm, and prices that only apply to a past edition.

For a day’s budget, also count meals: TwinkleTown’s food is paid for, and pub prices in the city centre aren’t documented in our sources. We have not checked any 2026 accommodation data. The big RDS events draw the biggest crowds in the first half of December, so booking early is sensible, though this advice is our own judgement rather than an official source.

What costs little: TwinkleTown at Smithfield with free entry, the lit-up streets on foot, the Ha’penny Bridge and the city centre areas. The heavier costs are the day trips, with a bus ticket or a guided tour. Accommodation still needs costing, as we have no verified 2026 data.

8. What other guides don’t tell you

Three useful points for planning, which aren’t covered elsewhere in this guide. Each one links to its source, checked on 21 October 2026.

  • Clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, the same day as in the UK. Market evenings then start earlier. The date comes from several news extracts, with no official primary source open to consultation.
  • The first departures of bus 181 vary between sources. Winter timetables differ from summer ones, and the first departure is 7:15 am on one source and 9:15 am on another. Check on glendalough.ie.
  • Sunset is around 4:20 pm by 21 November. This is an unofficial astronomical calculation (gaisma.com, checked 21 October 2026), so treat it as a rough guide.

9. Practical info: entry, timing and getting around

Entry. British nationals are not legally required to show a passport to enter Ireland, but it’s wise to carry one, as it helps prove your identity. Under the Common Travel Area, UK and Irish citizens can travel between the two countries without restriction. Some airlines and ferry operators do require a passport, so check your carrier’s rules before you travel. Ireland is outside the Schengen area, so the EU Entry/Exit System does not apply to you (gov.uk, checked on 21 October 2026). The same page doesn’t mention Christmas markets or events.

Irish Presidency of the EU. Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 July to 31 December 2026. The castle’s website links the closure of its campus to this Presidency.

Transport. DART and Leap card fares are not reliable in our sources: the figures we found contradict each other. Don’t build your transport budget on a figure from a guide. Check the TFI website (transportforireland.ie) before you travel. The DART serves Malahide and Howth from the centre, and bus 181 runs to Glendalough.

Christmas. Shop, pub and transport hours for 24 and 26 December 2026 were not published in the sources we checked. Do your shopping before the 24th to avoid surprises.

10. Frequently asked questions

Is the Christmas market in Dublin open on 18 November 2026?

No opening on 18 November 2026 is confirmed on an official page that was open when we checked on 21 October 2026. The reliable dates are TwinkleTown’s: Smithfield Square from 20 November, and St Patrick’s Park from 27 November (dublin.ie). Check the city’s listings before you book.

Is there still a Christmas market at Dublin Castle in 2026?

No. The castle’s official website shows a closure notice: the campus stays closed until January 2027, linked to Ireland’s Presidency of the EU (dublincastle.ie, checked on 21 October 2026). The cancellation was already criticised in the press in November 2025 (DublinPeople). Guides that still list this market are out of date.

Is there a Christmas market at St Stephen’s Green?

No, not for 2026. Dublin Tourism says no Christmas market is planned at St Stephen’s Green this year. A large chalet market was held there in 2014, with no return since (dublintourism.org, checked on 21 October 2026). For a city-centre market, TwinkleTown at Smithfield is the nearest option.

Do the Winter Lights take place in December 2026?

No. The city council’s light festival has been postponed to January 2027, from mid-January until the St Brigid’s Day weekend, which falls in early February according to DesignMyNight. The council says Christmas lights will still be up in December (Irish Times, 25 September 2026, extract). Exact January dates are not yet in our sources.

When are Dublin’s Christmas lights switched on?

The 2026 date was not announced on the Dublin Tourism page checked on 21 October 2026. The switch-on usually takes place around mid-November, on Mary Street, then Grafton Street and Henry Street. In 2025 it happened on Thursday 13 November on Mary Street (press extract). Watch for the Dublin City Council announcement before you plan your evening.

How much is entry to the RDS market?

Gifted, at the RDS, runs from 2 to 6 December 2026 with adult entry at €15 (rds.ie, checked on 21 October 2026). The price of Everwinter, in the same venue from 25 November to 23 December, was not checked in our sources. TwinkleTown at Smithfield is free to enter, but food and drink are paid for.

Can you visit Howth or Malahide over the holidays?

Yes for Malahide: Wonderlights, from 12 November to 29 December 2026, and Santa at Malahide Castle, from 28 November to 23 December (Visit Dublin, checked on 21 October 2026). For Howth, we found no Christmas market for 2025 or 2026. The New Year’s Eve fireworks over the harbour took place on 31 December 2025: that is a past event.

How do you get to Glendalough from Dublin?

Bus 181 (St Kevin’s Bus) leaves, according to an older listing, from Dawson Street in front of the Mansion House, for a journey of around 75 to 90 minutes according to a timetable aggregator. An undated listing gives €13 one way and €20 return for an adult, to confirm with the operator. Winter timetables differ from summer ones. A guided day tour avoids managing the timetables.
