Basel’s Christmas market runs from 26 November to 23 December 2026. Entry is free. From Mulhouse, the TER train takes about 22 minutes. With the BLS discount, a return trip can drop by up to 50%, within a monthly quota.
Checked on against the official sources cited (canton of Basel-Stadt, BLS, SBB, EuroAirport); TER durations taken from SNCF search results.
A weekend between Alsace and Basel lets you see two Christmas markets in one trip. Basel’s market has its own rules, though: the stalls close earlier on 23 December, the train discount depends on a monthly quota, some TER weekends are disrupted by engineering works, and the cathedral closed on some Advent weekends in 2024 because of the crowds. This article brings together the official dates, the journey times we checked, and the points most guides leave out, with the date each piece of information was consulted.
1. Dates, opening hours and the three squares of the market
Basel’s Christmas market, which locals call Basler Weihnacht, takes over three squares in the historic centre. It has been coordinated since 2010 by the volunteer association Verein Basler Weihnacht. The dates and hours below come from the official page of the canton of Basel-Stadt, read in full: it is the reference to check before you travel.

Basler Weihnachtsmarkt 2026: the heart of Basel’s Advent
The market brings together about 150 stalls, according to the canton’s press release for the 2025 edition. For 2026, the canton highlights the « Excellent European Christmas Market » distinction. The setting is a big part of the appeal: the pink sandstone cathedral on Münsterplatz, the Barfüsserkirche on the square of the same name, and the medieval lanes linking the three sites (bs.ch, Basler Weihnachtsmarkt 2026, consulted on 21 October 2026).
Highlights
- Free entry to all three squares, with no ticket to buy.
- Märliwald, the children’s world on Münsterplatz, until 22 December.
- Holzfällerbar on Münsterplatz, open daily from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm.
- Three squares a few minutes’ walk apart: when one is full, moving to the next is an easy option.
If you want to add a guided look at the old town to your day, a walking tour of the old town runs on the 28 dates of the market window. Its description mentions the cathedral and the Barfüsserkirche, two places in the market area. It is not a tour of the market: it helps you understand the streets between the stalls. The price we checked is €50 per adult for a group of two (€100 in total), and the walk is available on all 28 days from 26 November to 23 December 2026 (Viator catalogue check, 21 October 2026).
The table below gives opening hours by square. Märliwald and Adväntsgass are separate from the main market, and their hours do not have the same status: the canton announces Märliwald, while Adväntsgass relies on a permit application.
| Place | Dates | Opening hours | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barfüsserplatz | 26 November to 23 December | 11:00 am to 8:30 pm; 8:00 pm on 23 December | Heart of the market, in front of the former Franciscan church |
| Münsterplatz | 26 November to 23 December | 11:00 am to 8:30 pm; 6:00 pm on 23 December | In front of the cathedral, with the Märliwald and the Holzfällerbar |
| Claraplatz | 26 November to 23 December | 11:00 am to 8:30 pm; 8:00 pm on 23 December | Kleinbasel (Little Basel), more food-focused and friendly |
| Märliwald (Münsterplatz) | 26 November to 22 December | Monday to Friday 1:30 pm to 7:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday 11:00 am to 7:00 pm | Children’s world |
| Adväntsgass (Glaibasel) | 26 November to 23 December (planned) | Monday to Thursday 4:30 pm to 10:30 pm; Friday 4:30 pm to 11:30 pm; Saturday 1:30 pm to 11:30 pm; Sunday 1:30 pm to 8:30 pm (planned) | Side market in the Rheingasse area, hours taken from a permit application |

2. Getting there from Alsace: train, tram and airport bus
The train remains the simplest option from Alsace. Mulhouse is the fastest gateway, while Colmar and Strasbourg take longer. The times below come from SNCF search results: they are indicative and should be checked on SNCF Connect on the day of travel, especially at weekends when TER line 200 is interrupted.
From the UK, a simple option is the Eurostar to Paris, followed by a connecting train to Alsace or Basel. Check that connection on SNCF Connect before you book, since the times below start from Alsace.
| Departure | Route | Indicative duration | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mulhouse | TER to Basel SBB | about 22 min | The fastest of the three Alsace departures |
| Colmar | TER to Basel SBB | 43 to 51 min | Change possible in Mulhouse or Saint-Louis |
| Strasbourg | TER 200 to Basel SBB | 1 h 17 to 1 h 33 | Weekend cuts possible between Saint-Louis and Basel |
| EuroAirport | Bus 50 (BVB) to Basel SBB | about 20 min | Every 7 to 10 min, from 4:30 am to midnight |
| Basel SBB | Tram 8 or 11 to Barfüsserplatz | a few minutes | Starts from Basel SBB station |
Sources: SNCF TER Grand Est search results (durations), EuroAirport, transport (bus 50), SBB Freizeit (tram), consulted on 21 October 2026.
Some online answers quote 30 to 40 minutes from Mulhouse. That figure is too long: the results show about 22 minutes. The trip from Strasbourg, on the other hand, exceeds an hour in every result, which changes whether a day return makes sense.
3. Three ways to combine Basel and Alsace
Basel’s market lends itself to three weekend formats. They rely on the same opening hours but not on the same pace: choose between a short day and a night on site.
Saturday from Mulhouse, in short form
Take the 9:00 am TER to Basel SBB, allow about 22 minutes, then tram 8 or 11 to Barfüsserplatz. Settle into the market in the morning: repeated advice recommends that slot to avoid the weekend crowds. Have lunch in the old town: restaurants in Basel are generally judged expensive, so it is better to book for the weekend. In the afternoon, the cathedral and Münsterplatz with the Märliwald easily fill two hours, as long as you check cathedral access on the spot. The return to Mulhouse can take place late in the afternoon.
Weekend from Strasbourg, with a night in Basel
Leave on Saturday morning: the journey takes between 1 h 17 and 1 h 33 according to the results. Spend the day at the Barfüsserplatz market and the museum of your choice, then sleep in Basel. On Sunday, the Claraplatz market, more food-focused, is a good starting point. The Adväntsgass, if the planned hours are confirmed, opens on Sunday at 1:30 pm: that leaves a full afternoon before the return. Before you leave, check that the Sunday evening train is not affected by engineering works.
End of the week from Colmar
On Friday evening, take the train to Basel (43 to 51 minutes). Adväntsgass has planned hours until 11:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, which allows a late first evening. On Saturday, visit the cathedral early in the morning, before the crowds. On Sunday, head back to Colmar for the town’s market, open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm that day. Check the return time on SNCF Connect before you leave, as weekend engineering works can change the journey.
4. Tickets, BLS discount and customs
The most useful discount for a weekend from Alsace is the BLS one. It covers the return trip to Basel and Barfüsserplatz, for a public transport journey starting at 10:00 am, from 26 November to 23 December 2026. The rate depends on a monthly quota, and it drops once that quota is reached:
- up to 50% on the return trip, while the monthly quota is not used up;
- then 30%, and then no discount;
- online purchase only, with both journeys bought together.
The conditions come from the BLS page and the SBB Freizeit page, two sources that agree, consulted on 21 October 2026. So buy the discount before you board the train, online and for the planned dates.
For a ticket without the discount, the TER Grand Est page lists the TriRegio mini ticket at €10.70 and the TriRegio ticket at €22.30, valid for 24 hours on French, German and Swiss lines. That page is not dated: confirm the price on SNCF Connect before you leave.
For shopping, two customs rules apply. On the way back to Great Britain, the allowance for other goods is £390 for most travellers, or £270 if you arrive by private plane or boat (GOV.UK, « Bringing goods into the UK for personal use », consulted on 21 October 2026). If you go over the allowance, duty and tax are due on the full value of the goods, not just the excess. When entering Switzerland, the import VAT threshold is CHF 150 since 1 January 2025 (Federal Office for Customs and Border Security, consulted on 21 October 2026). That rule covers purchases made outside Switzerland, not items bought at the market.
5. Weekend budget: items and orders of magnitude
There is no official 2026 price list for the market. The figures below are orders of magnitude, drawn from dated and undated sources. To convert them, we use the indicative rate of CHF 1 = €1.07, the reference of 2 October 2026 (CHF 1 = €1.0724).
| Item | Price found | Euro equivalent | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market entry | free | €0 | canton of Basel-Stadt and BLS, 2026 |
| Mulled wine (Glühwein) | about CHF 6, sometimes less | about €6.40 | Stuttgarter Zeitung guide, 2024 market, not confirmed for 2026 |
| Raclette on bread | from about CHF 6 | from about €6.40 | Ultimate Christmas Markets, updated 1 October 2026 |
| Bratwurst | about CHF 8 | about €8.60 | Ultimate Christmas Markets, visitor reports, 2026 |
| Rösti in a restaurant | CHF 18 to 28 | €19 to 30 | undated travel blog, to be checked |
| Return train from Mulhouse | BLS discount up to 50%, monthly quota | to calculate on SNCF Connect | BLS, 2026 |
Sources: canton of Basel-Stadt, BLS, Ultimate Christmas Markets, consulted on 21 October 2026; 2024 prices and undated ones are marked as such.
Aggregated reviews judge the market expensive compared with German markets. Excluding accommodation, a short weekend comes to roughly €70 to €125 per person for the train, meals over two days and mulled wine. Add a museum, at a price we could not check for 2026. This is an estimate built from the items above, not a published price. We found no recent survey of prices charged in Basel, so these figures remain orders of magnitude.
6. Crowds, the cathedral and the best time slots
Is the market worth the detour? Aggregated reviews (guides and blogs) agree on three points: the setting around the cathedral and the squares, the quality of the crafts, and prices judged high compared with German markets. One personal blog, on its own, describes the market as overcrowded and repetitive: a minority voice, to be read as such.
The market draws large crowds, especially at weekends. According to the canton, the 2024 edition was presented as a record year, with queues at the cathedral entrance. According to the Swiss press (Blick), the cathedral stayed closed to visitors on the second and third Advent weekends of 2024, before reopening on the fourth weekend with a stricter entry check, funded by the canton. Nothing confirms that this rule will be repeated in 2026: check the canton’s website before planning a cathedral visit on a Saturday.
The most repeated advice points to the same slots: weekday evenings or mornings. A press extract also notes a growing share of visitors from France, Germany and Italy, especially at weekends. Since the three squares are a few minutes’ walk apart, a simple tactic is to move to the neighbouring square as soon as one is full.
Attendance figures vary. The canton speaks of more than one million visitors for the 2025 edition (canton press release, 2025), while an undated article from the Swiss broadcaster SRF mentions around 900,000 visitors a year. The safest figure is therefore the canton’s: more than one million visitors for 2025, according to its own source.
The market has a longer history than you might expect. It began in 1978 on Claraplatz, organised privately, before the city took it over in 1979. Münsterplatz was added in 2011 (canton press release, 2017).
7. Colmar and Mulhouse: the neighbouring markets in 2026
Two Alsace markets combine easily with Basel. For Strasbourg, however, we do not publish dates: no official source we read confirms the 2026 edition, and online sources give conflicting dates. Check the tourist office website before planning the trip.
Colmar: the traditional markets run from Monday 23 November to Tuesday 29 December 2026, Monday to Thursday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm and Friday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. The gourmet market and the big wheel keep the fun going until 3 January 2027. Source: evous.fr, page dated 7 October 2026. The Colmar tourist office was not consulted directly.
Mulhouse: the market is announced from Friday 20 November to Sunday 27 December 2026, Monday to Thursday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm and Friday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, closed on 25 December. Source: onivapp.com, an unofficial third-party site, consulted on 21 October 2026. A listing in the JDS agenda gives 24 November as the first day: confirm the date with the city before you go.

What other guides don’t tell you
Online guides often repeat the main dates but leave out the following points, which really change a weekend. Each one links to a source consulted on 21 October 2026.
- The BLS discount depends on a monthly quota. It is worth up to 50% on the return trip, then 30%, then nothing once the quota is used up. It is bought online, both journeys together, and only for a public transport trip starting at 10:00 am. BLS, market offer 2026 (consulted on 21 October 2026).
- On 23 December, the squares close earlier. Münsterplatz closes at 6:00 pm, Barfüsserplatz at 8:00 pm, whereas the usual hours run until 8:30 pm. Canton of Basel-Stadt, 2026 market page (consulted on 21 October 2026).
- The Märliwald closes before the market. The children’s world runs from 26 November to 22 December 2026, Monday to Friday from 1:30 pm to 7:00 pm, and at weekends from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Canton of Basel-Stadt (consulted on 21 October 2026).
- The TER 200 line is cut on some weekends. According to Frontaliers Grand Est (updated 11 September 2026), a weekend without trains between Saint-Louis and Basel is planned for 14 to 16 November 2026. No December timetable could be read: check before you travel. Frontaliers Grand Est, transport to Switzerland, updated 11 September 2026 (consulted on 21 October 2026).
- The airport bus runs from 4:30 am to midnight. Bus 50 runs every 7 to 10 minutes and takes about 20 minutes to Basel SBB. EuroAirport, transport (consulted on 21 October 2026).
Practical information for the weekend
Three points to help you prepare the journey. During TER 200 cuts between Saint-Louis and Basel, tram 3 provides the replacement service, accessible with an SNCF ticket valid on that route (local traffic information, consulted on 21 October 2026). To pay at the market, most stalls accept bank cards, according to one guide: this point is not confirmed for 2026. The Basel Card gives 25% off museums according to an extract from Basel Tourismus checked on 21 October 2026 (one guide says 50%): check the 2026 price before you buy.
Useful if your mobile plan does not cover Switzerland: check your operator’s options before you travel, then compare plans by duration and data allowance.

Plans depend on duration and cover, on the siteFrequently asked questions about Basel’s Christmas market
What are the dates of Basel’s 2026 Christmas market?
The market runs from Thursday 26 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026, according to the official page of the canton of Basel-Stadt, consulted on 21 October 2026. If you are reading an older article, check the canton’s page: the dates change from one edition to the next.
What time does Basel’s Christmas market open and close?
The market opens every day from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm. On 23 December, closing is brought forward: 8:00 pm at Barfüsserplatz, 6:00 pm at Münsterplatz. The children’s Märliwald has its own hours, Monday to Friday from 1:30 pm to 7:00 pm, and at weekends from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, until 22 December.
Is Basel’s Christmas market free?
Yes, entry to the three squares is free, according to the BLS page consulted on 21 October 2026. Spending goes on stalls, meals, the train and museums. For a short weekend excluding accommodation, the order of magnitude is about €70 to €125 per person excluding museums, an estimate built from the items surveyed.
How long does it take to reach Basel from Mulhouse, Colmar or Strasbourg?
About 22 minutes by TER from Mulhouse to Basel SBB, 43 to 51 minutes from Colmar, sometimes with a change, and 1 h 17 to 1 h 33 from Strasbourg, according to SNCF search results checked on 21 October 2026. Confirm the timetable on SNCF Connect, as weekend engineering works can change the journey.
Should I drive to Basel’s Christmas market?
Guides and specialist blogs advise leaving the car in Alsace. Parking in central Basel is limited and expensive. The most repeated advice is to park in Saint-Louis, on the French side, then take tram 11 into the centre. The 2026 parking price has not been checked.
What is the cheapest way to pay for the train?
The BLS discount offers the best value: up to 50% on the return trip to Basel, from 26 November to 23 December 2026, while the monthly quota lasts. It is bought online, both journeys together, and is only valid from 10:00 am. TriRegio tickets, at €10.70 or €22.30 on an undated page, still need to be confirmed on SNCF Connect.
Is there a market for children?
Yes, the Märliwald, set up on Münsterplatz from 26 November to 22 December 2026, offers a world designed for children. It is open Monday to Friday from 1:30 pm to 7:00 pm, and at weekends from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. The most repeated advice for avoiding crowds is to choose weekday evenings.
Can I keep my mulled wine cup?
We found no Basel rule on deposits or on keeping mulled wine cups, so we do not claim one. The simplest is to ask at the stall before leaving the market with a cup in hand.
