The Sorteo del Niño 2027 is expected on Wednesday 6 January 2027, Epiphany, at 12:00 Madrid time, at the Salón de Sorteos de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado in Madrid. The state lottery has not yet officially announced these details. In 2026, the draw was broadcast live on La 1 and RTVE Play.
Checked on against the open sources cited (RTVC, Lotería El Dólar, El Español, TuLotero). The website of Loterías y Apuestas del Estado was not accessible on that date.
The Sorteo del Niño is not the Christmas draw: it is Spain’s Epiphany draw, held on 6 January, and it takes place in Madrid. Every year, Spain’s state lottery holds this extraordinary draw on the day Spain celebrates the Three Kings. In 2026, it distributed €770 million in prizes across 55 series of 100,000 tickets (RTVC). For 2027, the reference date is Wednesday 6 January, but no official announcement has been published yet. This article separates what is sourced from what still needs confirming, and answers a simple question: can you go and watch it?
Sorteo del Niño 2027 at a glance: date, time and venue

Wednesday 6 January 2027, Salón de Sorteos in Madrid
- A draw on Wednesday 6 January 2027, Epiphany (2027 calendar, Esdiario)
- A venue: the Salón de Sorteos de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, not the Teatro Real (RTVC)
- A decimo (tenth-ticket) at €20 and a full ticket at €200, 2026 prices carried over by a commercial site
- Public access for 2027 is not documented: the safe route is through SELAE
The draw falls on Epiphany, known as Día de Reyes in Spain, a national public holiday. The venue is the one used for the 2026 draw: the Salón de Sorteos de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado in Madrid, according to RTVC and Lotería El Dólar. It is not the Teatro Real, where the Christmas draw takes place on 22 December.
The 2027 date is a calendar calculation: 6 January 2027 falls on a Wednesday. The 12:00 time is a « horario previsto », an expected time, a phrase used by El Español and Loteriapepito. These details stay provisional until the state lottery publishes them. For UK readers, 12:00 in Madrid is 11:00 in London, as Spain runs one hour ahead of the UK in winter.
You will mostly follow the draw on television. In 2026 it was broadcast live on La 1 and RTVE Play from 12:00. If you are in Madrid that day, a night tour can fill the evening. It has no link with the draw.
The card below links to a night tour of Madrid sold on Viator. It does not give access to the Salón de Sorteos. On 25 October 2026, the 6 January 2027 date was open for booking, checked through the Viator API; 5 January was not open on the same date.
Where the draw comes from: from state lotteries to today’s format
The Sorteo Extraordinario del Niño is a separate draw from El Gordo. Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (SELAE) runs it every year on 6 January. Its origins are disputed. Some media date the first draws to 1812, at the Cortes of Cádiz: no official source we read confirms this, and Spanish Wikipedia marks the origins as « cita requerida » (citation needed). We do not adopt this date.
The dated milestones are firmer. Spanish Wikipedia gives the following steps:
- 1941: the draw is officially institutionalised.
- 1942: the « extraordinary » format appears, with reintegros (refunded tickets).
- 1966: the bombos múltiples system, several drums turning together, is adopted. It is the system used today, according to RTVC and Lotería El Dólar.
- 2000: the draw moves to 6 January. It was held on 5 January until 1999.
The draw falls on Epiphany (Día de Reyes), a national public holiday in Spain. The sources we read do not document why this date was chosen.
Source: Spanish Wikipedia, Sorteo Extraordinario del Niño, checked 25 October 2026. This source does not settle the 1812 origin, and marks several of its claims « cita requerida ».
What the 2026 draw distributed
In 2026, the draw covered 55 series of 100,000 tickets. The full ticket costs €200, or ten decimos of €20 each. Total issuance reached €1,100 million, of which €770 million in prizes (RTVC, article of 23 December 2025). The first prize is €2 million per series, or €200,000 per winning decimo (El Español).
The Niño does not work like El Gordo. According to El Debate (28 December 2025), there is no pedrea, the smaller prizes that El Gordo has. The Niño mostly pays prizes by ending: three-digit, two-digit and refunds. The amounts of these prizes, as reported in the press, have not been checked against SELAE: we do not detail them.

The total 2027 prizes are not included here. Media cite €700 million in one passage and €770 million elsewhere, with no official source to settle it. Until SELAE publishes its announcement, we keep €770 million as the 2026 reference.
The live draw: the choir, the drums and the rhythm
According to RTVC, the draw uses the bombos múltiples system, several drums turning at the same time. According to Lotería El Dólar, children from the Colegio de San Ildefonso sing the numbers. This is the one sound feature of the draw that we could source.
According to RTVC, the 2026 presentation was handled by Lucía Vinaixa, with live broadcast on La 1 and RTVE Play. The numbers are announced series after series. The exact order in which the first prize is announced is not confirmed by open sources: do not take it for granted before you have seen the official running order.
The duration is unknown. On the same page, Lotería El Dólar gives about 30 minutes, then about three and a half hours. No official source settles it, so we do not give a duration.
We found no sourced description of the hall, its lighting or its audience, so we do not describe them. The Salón de Sorteos sits in an administrative district, not a tourist one. El Gordo, by contrast, is drawn at the Teatro Real, where public access is documented (see below); that tells us nothing about the atmosphere of the Niño.
Where to watch: television, streaming or in person

Following the draw from home or from Madrid
The safe way to follow the Niño remains television. La 1 (TVE) and RTVE Play broadcast the 2026 draw live, from 12:00. For 2027, Loteriapepito announces La 1, but this is not an official confirmation. If you plan to stream it, check whether RTVE Play is available where you are.
On site, the answer is different. No open source says the public can enter the Salón de Sorteos. The decimo, for its part, gives no right of entry: it is a lottery ticket, not an admission ticket.

The Niño is not El Gordo: two draws, two venues
The confusion is common. El Gordo, the Christmas draw on 22 December, has been held at the Teatro Real since 2012. The Sorteo del Niño takes place on 6 January at the Salón de Sorteos. Both come from the same state lottery, but they are two separate draws, with their own calendar, prizes and venues.
For El Gordo, public access is documented: according to El Debate (article of 21 December 2025), entry is free, doors open at 8:00 am and seats are given out in order of arrival, with no tickets sold. For the Niño, nothing similar is published. If you are looking for the Christmas draw, read our guide to the El Gordo draw at the Teatro Real.
| Criterion | Sorteo del Niño | El Gordo Christmas draw |

| Date | 6 January, Epiphany | 22 December |
| Venue | Salón de Sorteos de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, Madrid | Teatro Real, Madrid |
| Public access | not documented for 2027 | free entry, doors at 8:00 am, seats in order of arrival (El Debate, 21 December 2025) |
| Choir | children from the Colegio de San Ildefonso (Lotería El Dólar) | not covered in this article |
| Decimo | €20 (2026) | not covered in this article |
Source: RTVC and Lotería El Dólar for the Niño (checked 25 October 2026); El Debate, article of 21 December 2025 (consulted 25 October 2026) for public access to El Gordo. Cells marked « not covered in this article » are not sourced here.
Buying a decimo: price, where to buy and the sales deadline
A decimo costs €20 in 2026, and a full ticket of ten decimos with the same number costs €200 (RTVC). A commercial site announces the same prices for 2027. It is not an official source: treat these prices as indicative until SELAE publishes them.
Decimos are sold at authorised outlets and online. TuLotero, a sales platform, quotes the same price in its app. Buying a decimo gives no right of entry to the draw: the decimo is a game, not a ticket to the event.
The sales deadline is one of the points where sources disagree. In 2026, El Debate (5 January 2026) gave sales until 10:00 am on 6 January, that is, the morning of the draw itself. TuLotero, on the other hand, says the evening before. The 2026 rule may change: ask your outlet for the cut-off time before 6 January.
6 January in Madrid: public holiday and the eve of the Cabalgata
6 January 2027 is a public holiday in Madrid. Decree 82/2026 of the Community of Madrid, published in the BOCM on 1 October 2026, sets the regional public holidays for 2027; according to Esdiario, Wednesday 6 January is one of them. We did not open the decree itself for this article. According to IFEMA, the central streets are quiet on the 6th, unlike the 5th. For UK readers, 6 January is not a bank holiday in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland (GOV.UK, checked 25 October 2026), so it is an ordinary working day there.
The evening before, Tuesday 5 January 2027, is the planned date of the Cabalgata de Reyes, the parade of the Three Kings (La Maleta Inquieta). Its 2027 programme is not published. Our dedicated article describes the festival and the route, so we do not repeat it here. Find it in our article on the Cabalgata de Reyes 2027.
For getting around, the traffic arrangements published for the 2023 Cabalgata (Madrid City Council) closed the Paseo del Prado at 12:00 on the 5th, and the Castellana between Nuevos Ministerios and Plaza de Neptuno from 4:00 pm. The metro reinforced lines 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 from 4:00 pm. This data dates from 2023 and does not predict the 2027 arrangements. Authorities recommend the metro rather than a car on Cabalgata days.
On museums, a travel guide says the Museo Reina Sofía is closed on 6 January. That information does not come from the museum and should be checked on museoreinasofia.es before your visit.
Depending on your profile
With family
The draw is easy to follow at home, at noon, live on La 1 and RTVE Play (2026). For children, the concrete element is the singing of the Colegio de San Ildefonso children, according to Lotería El Dólar. No official source publishes the duration.
As a couple or on a small budget
Following the draw on television costs nothing. The decimo, at €20 (2026), is optional, to buy only if you want to try your luck. For the rest of the day, the night tour shown above is sold on Viator.
For a first visit to Madrid
5 January is the planned date for the Cabalgata, and 6 January is a public holiday in Madrid, with a calmer centre that day (IFEMA). Your choice depends on what you want to see: the festival on the eve, or a quieter day on the 6th.
With reduced mobility
We found no accessibility information for the Salón de Sorteos. Madrid’s metro received lifts at Bilbao and Plaza Elíptica in 2020, according to the Community of Madrid, but no central station is named. Contact SELAE before you travel.
What other guides don’t tell you
The points below are missing from, or wrong in, the guides and automatic summaries we read. Each one links to its source and to the date we checked it.
- 6 January 2027 is a Wednesday. El Español writes « martes » (Tuesday), which is wrong. Esdiario, citing the 2027 calendar, confirms Wednesday (13 October 2026, checked 25 October 2026).
- The Niño is not held at the Teatro Real. Several pages place the draw at Plaza Isabel II or at the Teatro Real. Those are El Gordo details. The Niño is drawn at the Salón de Sorteos (RTVC, article of 23 December 2025, checked 25 October 2026).
- Public access is not documented for the Niño. Some pages and an AI-generated summary mention « limited capacity » and « order of arrival », without any source. For El Gordo, El Debate (21 December 2025) describes free entry in order of arrival: this does not apply to the Niño.
- The duration is not published. Lotería El Dólar gives two durations on the same page, 30 minutes and then three and a half hours. We do not give a duration (checked 25 October 2026).
- The 2027 total is disputed. El Español cites €700 million in one passage, and €770 million for 2026. Loteriapepito repeats €770 million for 2027. No official source settles it (checked 25 October 2026).
- The first prize does not carry the name of El Gordo. An AI-generated summary gives the name « El Gordo » to the Niño’s first prize. El Gordo is the name of the Christmas draw; El Español speaks of « primer premio » for the Niño (checked 25 October 2026).
