The Valkenburg Christmas market runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 across the whole town. Both cave markets, the Gemeentegrot and the Fluweelengrot, are open until 30 December 2026 and close on 25 December. Online, an adult ticket costs €9.30 Monday to Thursday and €11.30 Friday to Sunday.
Checked on against the official ticket sites and the Valkenburg town website.
Every winter, Valkenburg aan de Geul, a small town in the south of the Dutch province of Limburg, turns into the « Kerststad », the Christmas town. The best-known markets are set up inside old marl quarries: the Gemeentegrot, the municipal cave, and the Fluweelengrot, beneath the castle ruins. This guide brings together the 2026 dates, opening hours and prices from the official ticket sites, the routes from Maastricht, Liège and Paris, and the points other guides leave out.
1. The Gemeentegrot, the market in the galleries
The Gemeentegrot is the municipal cave of Valkenburg and the heart of the season. Its marl galleries hold chalets, craft and gift stalls, and hot food. Guides describe a constant chill and a more intimate atmosphere than an indoor market hall. This is not an open-air market: you enter through a ticket desk, then walk through the rock.
The underground market is open from 13 November to 30 December 2026 and closes on 25 December. The official ticket shop sets out the opening hours, prices and buying conditions, detailed in section 3. The ticket office is at Cauberg 4, 6301 BT Valkenburg aan de Geul.
Published visitor figures are old or partial. In 2019, a tender document published on tenderned.nl gave 189,000 visitors for the cave alone. For the 2022 season, the municipality cited more than 180,000 tickets sold for the Gemeentegrot and nearly 600,000 visitors across all the town’s markets, according to a NOS article dated 31 December 2022. No 2026 figure has been published. The slogan « the largest Christmas cave in Europe » circulates on many sites. It is a promotional line, and we found no official source that confirms it.
If your stay takes in other markets in the region, two events run in the same season, to be reconfirmed on their own programmes: the Magisch Maastricht market, on the Vrijthof, from 27 November to 27 December 2026, and the Aachen Christmas market, from 20 November to 23 December 2026, every day from 11 am to 9 pm with a few exceptions, according to the official Aachen programme. The European Christmas markets 2026 guide compares the Kerststad with other towns.

Gemeentegrot: galleries, stalls and tickets
The cave is presented as a facility of the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul. No separate management company has been identified in the sources consulted. Tickets are booked online for a time slot, and the desk stays open with a €1 surcharge per ticket, according to the official ticket shop.
Highlights
- Fitted-out marl galleries, more than a covered hall
- Online tickets with time slots, recommended by the organiser
- A varied range of stalls: crafts, gifts and hot food
2. The Fluweelengrot and the castle ruins
The Fluweelengrot, or Velvet Cave, lies directly beneath the ruins of Valkenburg castle, which overlook the town. It is smaller than the Gemeentegrot, and its market has a « North Pole » theme according to guides. Both caves open on the same dates: 13 November to 30 December 2026. The castle ruins are open on 24, 26 and 31 December until 3 pm, with the ticket desk closing at 2:15 pm, according to the castle’s Christmas market page.
The point that changes the visit most is accessibility. The castle FAQ says the Fluweelengrot is fully accessible to manual and electric wheelchairs, rollators and pushchairs. The ruins are only partly accessible with this equipment. For a family with a young child in a pushchair, the Fluweelengrot is therefore the simpler of the two caves.
No adult or child price for the Fluweelengrot is published in plain terms. The official page recommends a « combiticket » bought online, and we did not record its price. One guide says tickets are sold on site only, with no e-ticket. The official page contradicts this and recommends booking online, so do not rely on that version.

Fluweelengrot: Velvet Cave under the castle
The castle and its cave form one site, on the hill above the town. For a full visit, the climb to the ruins comes before the descent into the cave. As noted above, the ruins are only partly accessible. If the climb is a barrier, the cave alone covers most of the visit.
Highlights
- Access fully suited to wheelchairs and pushchairs
- A smaller cave, good for a first visit
- A « North Pole » theme according to guides, to check on site
3. 2026 opening hours and prices from the official ticket shop
The figures in this section come from the official ticket sites of the Gemeentegrot and the castle page, checked on 25 October 2026. They are indicative: pages can change, and a quick check the day before you go is enough to confirm them.
| Day | Gemeentegrot | Fluweelengrot |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 11 am to 7 pm | 11 am to 7 pm |
| Saturday and Sunday | 10 am to 7 pm | 10 am to 7 pm |

Source: official ticket shop of the Gemeentegrot (Dutch version), checked 25 October 2026. Online prices include a €0.30 booking fee per ticket.
The ticket shop adds a €0.50 service fee per transaction, shown before payment. The €0.30 fee per ticket bought online is already included in the prices above. Tickets are non-refundable. The shop advises buying online: at weekends, time slots go quickly.
The ticket shop sets the adult category at « over 12 » and the child category at 5 to 11. A 12-year-old therefore falls between the two wordings, and the sources consulted do not settle it, so ask the ticket shop before you buy. For children aged 5 to 11, the €6.80 rate applies on both types of day, which keeps the sums simple for a family.
4. The parade, the events and the whole town
Kerststad is more than the caves. During the season, a parade, the Landal Christmas Parade, winds through the town with lit floats, dancers and musicians, along with street entertainment, according to guides. A listing from Visit Zuid-Limburg, the regional tourist board, gives the parade from 14 November to 30 December 2026: Saturdays at 7:30 pm (14, 21 and 28 November, 12 and 19 December) and Wednesdays at 7 pm (9, 16, 23 and 30 December). There is no parade on 5 or 26 December.
These dates still need reconfirming. The listing does not give Wednesdays 18 and 25 November, so the November list is incomplete. Check the town’s programme before you plan an evening around the parade, and have a fallback in case the date falls on a very busy night.
The number of parades has fallen: the town went from twelve to nine in 2025, according to the ANP news agency (14 November 2025). The 2026 listings follow the same trend. None of the guides consulted mention this drop, although it changes what an evening in Valkenburg looks like.

The parade and the town’s streets
A village of chalets, WinterGlow, is listed as a 2026 novelty by a single travel site, with opening hours given as late as around 9 or 10 pm. The town has not confirmed it: check the official programme before you add it to your itinerary.
Highlights
- A parade of lit floats, dancers and musicians
- Decorated streets that extend the cave visit
- A calmer atmosphere on weekdays
Security. The national threat level has been at 4 out of 5 since late 2023 (source: securitymanagement.nl, December 2023). In 2025, the municipality strengthened the arrangements: concrete blocks and barriers against vehicles, cameras, and checks at the cave entrances. These measures are documented by the ANP (14 November 2025, relayed by nieuws.nl). No official source consulted as of 25 October 2026 confirms the measures for the 2026–2027 season. Allow extra time at the entrance, and assume the checks remain in place.
Crowds. At weekends, queues stretch several hundred metres in front of the cave entrances, according to Hart van Nederland (26 November 2024). The municipality asks visitors to avoid peak times and to come on weekdays.
5. Getting to Valkenburg: train, bus and car
Valkenburg aan de Geul is in the Netherlands, in the province of Limburg, not in Germany, despite what some travel sites say. The entry formalities could not be checked. The Netherlands page of the French foreign ministry was not readable as text on 25 October 2026, so passport, ID and border checks are not verified here. Read the Netherlands travel advice on GOV.UK before you travel.

Source: Visit Maastricht for the journeys from Maastricht. Times from Paris and The Hague come from aggregators and blogs and need confirming on the operators’ sites, checked 25 October 2026.
From Maastricht, the train is the simplest option: Valkenburg station is served by the Arriva lines S5, RE18 and S4. From Paris there is no direct train to Maastricht. The route goes through Liège or Brussels, and the connections make for a long day. Weekend engineering works between Liège and Maastricht, with replacement buses, ran from 26 September to 25 October 2026. The Belgian rail operator’s page (NMBS), read in Dutch, lists them as finished on that date. No new works for December turned up in the sources consulted, so reconfirm before each trip.
A direct 55-minute train from Liège, mentioned by a search engine, is not confirmed by any operator source. Do not plan a connection around that figure. An Arriva « Christmas ticket » at €5 is mentioned by a single site. We did not find it on the operator’s website, so do not count it in your budget.
By car, Valkenburg is about 15 minutes from Maastricht, but traffic is heavy at weekends. The P+R Station Valkenburg car park, on Spoorlaan next to the station, has more than 200 spaces. Its commercial listing shows €1.39 an hour and €7.50 a day at most, with no date of check, so confirm the rate on site. The walk from the car park to the station and the centre has not been checked.
6. Budget: tickets, accommodation and food
Your budget comes down to a few items: tickets, transport, accommodation and food. Tickets are the only item whose price the organiser publishes. For a family of two adults and two children aged 5 to 11, buying online on a Saturday, the sum is 2 × €11.30 for the adults and 2 × €6.80 for the children, which makes €36.20, plus €0.50 in service fees per transaction. The total is therefore €36.70. The €0.30 online fee is already included in the prices.
Accommodation is the most variable item, and no dated rate was recorded for the period. A group stay from 11 to 14 December 2026 was on a waiting list on 25 October 2026, so it is not a reference point. Guides point to cheaper rooms in Sittard and Heerlen, to be booked early. Compare prices for your dates on the booking platforms.
Food is mostly eaten in the galleries: guides mention poffertjes, oliebollen and mulled wine. No food price was recorded from an official source, so budget for food as you go, depending on your appetite and how many stalls you visit.
7. By traveller type: family, couple, budget, mobility
The same market is not visited the same way by everyone. The advice below repeats the points guides mention most often. The ticket shop does not confirm all of them.
- Families. Children aged 0 to 4 enter free, but a free ticket must still be booked. Ages 5 to 11 pay €6.80. The parade and the lights are the highlight for younger children, according to guides. Plan a break outside the cave, as the galleries stay cool.
- Couples. Aim for a weekday, early in the afternoon. Photo spots fill up fast: one blogger advises moving early rather than staying at the most popular spots.
- Tight budget. The lowest adult rate is €9.30 on weekdays, online. The group rate, for 20 tickets minimum, drops to €8.80 per person. Avoid the desk, which adds €1 per ticket.
- First visit. Allow half a day for both caves and the parade. One guide estimates about 1 hour 30 minutes per attraction, so do not arrive at the end of a time slot.
- Reduced mobility. The Fluweelengrot is fully accessible to manual and electric wheelchairs, rollators and pushchairs, according to the castle FAQ. The castle ruins are only partly accessible. MergelRijk, the marl cave devoted to fairy tales and nativity scenes, is not wheelchair accessible according to a third-party guide. For the Gemeentegrot, no official confirmation was found: ask the ticket shop before you visit.
What other guides don’t tell you
The travel guides we reviewed for this piece leave out or get wrong the points below. Each point links to a source checked on 25 October 2026, official where one exists.
- Ticket fees are extra. The ticket shop charges a €0.50 service fee per transaction, plus €1 more per ticket at the desk. The €0.30 online fee per ticket is included in the prices shown. The €9 and €11 figures quoted by some guides are therefore incomplete. Official Gemeentegrot ticket shop (checked 25 October 2026).
- The child rate is €6.80. Some guides quote €5 or €6.50, which do not match the 2026 ticket prices we checked. The ticket shop’s price is the one that counts. Official ticket shop, Dutch version (checked 25 October 2026).
- « Free » does not mean no ticket. Children aged 0 to 4 enter without paying, but a free ticket must be booked and shown at the entrance. Most guides only say « free ». Official ticket shop (checked 25 October 2026).
- Christmas opening hours vary by source. The ticket shop lists 11 am to 6 pm on 24 December and 10 am to 6 pm on 26 December. Other sites give different hours for those two days. Check the official page the day before your visit. Official ticket shop (checked 25 October 2026).
- Parades are down, and checks are in place. The town went from twelve parades to nine in 2025, and has added checks at the cave entrances, cameras and concrete blocks. No guide we read mentions it. ANP, relayed by nieuws.nl (14 November 2025, checked 25 October 2026).
