For Copacabana’s New Year’s Eve on 31 December 2026, Bonjourrio recommends Posto 5 for atmosphere and visibility, and Posto 6 is described as the calmest. The 2025/26 edition used 19 barges for a 12-minute fireworks display, fired around midnight with no official time published, and the 2026/27 programme isn’t out yet.
Checked on against the official sources cited (FCDO, Government of Canada) and dated press (Jornal do Brasil, Diário do Transporte, Rádio Itatiaia).
New Year’s Eve on Copacabana is, according to the press, one of the biggest year-end gatherings in the world, and its 2026/27 programme isn’t out yet. Organisers and the media call the night of 31 December 2026 « Réveillon 2027 ». This guide separates what’s established, the 2025/26 edition with its dated figures, from what still needs confirming in December. It then gives you the practical info to pick your spot, get home after midnight and plan the trip from the UK.
What we know about the night of 31 December 2026
The date is a tradition: the party takes place every 31 December on the four kilometres of Copacabana beach, between Leme and Posto 6. But no official 2026/27 programme exists as of this guide. On 15 October 2026, Rádio Itatiaia reported that the artists, stage times and transport plan had not yet been officially announced. The Rio Times expects the City to confirm them in December.
Three things remain open: the artists and stages, the departure times, and whether the party stays free, as it usually does but isn’t confirmed for 2026/27. The usual organiser is Riotur, the official tourism body of the City of Rio. So read the figures in this article as 2025/26 numbers: they give you an order of magnitude, not a guaranteed timetable or price. Every figure is dated, and the points to reconfirm are flagged in the tables.

The fireworks: the 2025/26 edition as a benchmark

Watch the fireworks from the beach or a terrace
In 2025/26 the fireworks were fired from barges offshore: 19 barges, up from 10 the year before, for a display lasting 12 minutes, according to the Jornal do Brasil, 26 December 2025. Two press sources give that barge count, and they agree. No start time was published for that edition, and the Jornal do Brasil doesn’t give one either: the launch happens around midnight by tradition, with no official time.
What changes the experience
- The fireworks are synchronised to the music. A January 2026 review describes them as on time, with no technical hitches.
- Most concerts are sung in Portuguese, with samba, pagode and MPB: a January 2026 review notes they’re less accessible if you don’t speak the language.
If you want to spend the afternoon of 31 December on the water before the party, the Viator boat tour below runs three hours with a swim and drinks. It doesn’t include the fireworks. It advertises a return at sunset, but no sunset time is listed: from a 2:30 pm departure, the stated duration brings you back around 5:30 pm. Departures we checked on 25 October 2026 leave at 2:30 pm on 30 and 31 December, and at 3:30 pm on 1 January; times can change. Don’t book it to see the fireworks.
The figures below are the latest published for the 2025/26 edition. The most-quoted attendance figure, around 2.6 million people on Copacabana, is a press estimate attributed to Riotur: it was not published as an official City tally. The expected figure, for its part, was 2.5 million.
| Indicator | 2025/26 edition | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Fireworks duration | 12 minutes | Jornal do Brasil, 26 December 2025 |
| Barges | 19 (10 the year before) | Jornal do Brasil, 26 December 2025 |
| Stages | 13, including 3 on Copacabana | Jornal do Brasil, 26 December 2025 |
| Expected attendance on Copacabana | 2.5 million | Jornal do Brasil, 26 December 2025 (announced figure) |
| Attendance estimate | About 2.6 million on Copacabana | January 2026 press, attributed to Riotur (unofficial) |

Where to stand on the beach: posts, stages and atmosphere

Posto 5 or Posto 6: two ways to spend the night
The beach is numbered by lifeguard posts (postos), from Posto 1 at Leme to Posto 6 towards Ipanema. Locals meet up by post, and picking one by its number is the easiest way for a visitor to find a spot. According to The Rio Times, posts 3 to 5 are the busiest, and Posto 3, closest to the main stage, has the tightest crowd. Bonjourrio recommends Posto 5 for atmosphere and visibility, but the sources don’t agree on how dense it is: one guide describes it as airier. Posto 6 is described as the calmest.
How to choose
- Don’t stand right by the stage if you’re mainly there for the fireworks.
- Find the lifeguard post nearest your spot: organisers and guides use it as the reference point.
- Plan a walk or a metro ride home from the station that’s least crowded for your post.
The table below sums up each post’s atmosphere and the type of visitor it suits best. The « advice by visitor type » column is our reading of those descriptions, not an official source.
| Area | Atmosphere | Advice by visitor type |
|---|---|---|
| Leme / Posto 1 | Residential, calmer and flat; view of Sugarloaf from Morro do Leme | Couples and visitors who want quiet |
| Posto 2 | Urban, close to central Copacabana, dense buzz | Anyone who wants the city atmosphere |
| Posto 3 | Dense, main stage nearby, tightest crowd | Anyone who wants to be close to the concerts |
| Posto 4 | Family-friendly and dense; Cantagalo station about 7 minutes’ walk away | Families who want to walk home |
| Posto 5 | Family-friendly; described as airier by one guide, dense according to The Rio Times; recommended for atmosphere and visibility (Bonjourrio) | Recommended by Bonjourrio for a good view of the fireworks, with family or a group |
| Posto 6 | Calmer, towards Ipanema; General Osório station | Couples and anyone heading back towards Ipanema |

Getting there, the metro and the pass: the practical side of the night

The metro pass: what the sources say for 2025/26
The special pass lets you ride the metro back after midnight (special service from 7 pm to 5 am in 2025/26) if you’re staying outside Copacabana. No source gives the 2026/27 terms yet. The rules below are the 2025/26 ones: they show how the night works, but check them once MetrôRio publishes its own.
- Sold online (app or website) until 6 pm on 31 December 2025, or until sold out, according to the Diário do Transporte.
- Limit of 10 tickets per purchase, with a QR code to show at the station entrance.
- Single-ride cards, prepaid cards, Giro, Riocard Mais, Jaé and contactless payment not accepted from 7 pm on 31 December 2025.
The table below lists the 2025/26 details and marks what still needs confirming for 2026/27.

Traffic: the road closures on 31 December
The times below are from the 2025/26 edition, published by CET-Rio on 26 December 2025. They show how the night works: cars can’t stay near the beach, and buses and taxis switch to a terminal from 9 pm. Times for 2026/27 aren’t known as of this guide.
| Time | Measure |
|---|---|
| Midnight | Charter vehicles banned from Copacabana and Leme |
| 7 am | Avenida Atlântica closed, from Leme to the end of the avenue |
| 7 pm | Access blocked to Copacabana, Ipanema, Lagoa, Túnel Velho and Enseada de Botafogo; Aterro do Flamengo closed |
| 7:30 pm | Rua Barata Ribeiro blocked near Cardeal Arcoverde, diversion via Rua Tonelero |
| 9 pm | All vehicles blocked in Copacabana; buses and taxis switch to Terminal Enseada de Botafogo |
| 5 am, 1 January | Reopening to vehicles; Avenida Atlântica closed between Francisco Otaviano and Princesa Isabel |
Source: CET-Rio, relayed by the Diário do Transporte (26 December 2025), checked on 25 October 2026.
Special buses, 24 municipal and 11 intermunicipal lines, served Copacabana between 6 pm and 9 pm in 2025/26, according to the press. The SuperVia Central station closed at 9:15 pm on 31 December 2025 and reopened at 12:20 am on 1 January, still according to the Diário do Transporte. One visitor reported in January 2026 that taxis get scarce after midnight for long trips.
Safety, bag checks and banned items
In 2025/26, the Jornal do Brasil (26 December 2025) described 78 military police surveillance towers, 1,370 agents from the Municipal Guard and the Public Order Secretariat, and bag checks at 17 pedestrian access points to the beach. Diário do Rio (31 December 2025) reported 17 barriers with metal detectors and facial recognition at Copacabana and Leme: its headline credits the military police, while its text cites a state government tally. The sources we checked report no criticism of the set-up, which doesn’t prove it has consensus. Figures for 2026/27 aren’t known.
Glass, fireworks and bags
- Glass: banned at the entrance, and street vendors can’t sell it (Jornal do Brasil, 26 December 2025). Municipal decree 56.160/2025 (Ordem Pública, September 2025) only allows drinks in glass on the sand if they come in containers supplied by the seafront kiosks. We haven’t checked whether it’s enforced in December 2026.
- Fireworks: a 2022 municipal law bans private individuals from noisy rockets, with an exception for public events, including New Year’s Eve (Jornal do Brasil, December 2022). We haven’t checked how it’s enforced now.
- Bags: they’re searched at the entrances. Bring a small bag, see-through if possible.
Night swimming
We found no confirmed ban on night swimming at Copacabana in the sources we checked, and this guide doesn’t claim one. Lifeguards did log 547 rescues on the south zone beaches during the 2025/26 New Year’s Eve, according to press from January 2026. Before you swim at midnight, check locally, especially if you don’t know the currents.
Travel advice
The Government of Canada rates Brazil level 2 out of 4 in its advisory of 14 October 2026, and flags pickpocketing on Copacabana beach. That advisory is written for Canadians, so read it as a general signal. For UK travellers, the FCDO Brazil travel advice page, updated 29 September 2026, is the reference to check before you go.
Time, weather and what to wear
Rio hasn’t used daylight saving time since 2019. In December the city is therefore 3 hours behind London, or 2 hours if daylight saving time comes back. Whether it does for 2026/27 hasn’t been decided.
Over the last eleven years (2015 to 2025), the average daily high on 31 December in Copacabana is 30.6°C and the average low 23.4°C, and it rained more than 1 mm in six of those eleven years (Open-Meteo, reanalysis data, checked on 25 October 2026). These are rough figures, not a forecast: bring water and sun protection.
White is the traditional dress, repeated by guides and several reviews. Guides and visitors advise against jewellery and flashy items. One practice, reported by a single guide: white flowers are offered to the sea, in particular for Iemanjá, the goddess of Afro-Brazilian religions. It’s a gesture to respect, not an obligation.
Budget and flights
No budget has been published for 2026/27. The figures below come from the press and comparison sites: check them again when you book.
- Flights: British Airways flies nonstop from London Heathrow to Rio-GIG, in about 11 hours 40 to 11 hours 55 on the published timetable, which can change. A comparison site (ou-et-quand.net, date of check not given) puts the average December return fare at about €1,124, with a range from €700 to €1,600. Check BA for live prices.
- Accommodation: demand is high in Copacabana and Leme, with 80.95% occupancy reported for the 2025/26 New Year’s Eve (Panrotas, December 2025). No hotel rate for 31 December 2026 has been published in the sources we checked.
- Transport: the metro pass cost R$15 to R$15.80 return in 2025/26. Private vehicles are banned from Copacabana from 7 pm, and all vehicles are blocked at 9 pm (CET-Rio via Diário do Transporte). Buses and taxis then switch to Terminal Enseada de Botafogo: plan on the metro or a walk.
- Payment: cards are accepted in shops, but street vendors often take cash only, according to guides.
Depending on your travel style: family, couple, tight budget, first time
Families. Bonjourrio recommends Posto 5 for atmosphere and visibility; stay away from the main stage, where the crowd is tightest. It’s hot, around 30°C: bring water for the kids and find a shady spot for the evening.
Couples. Posto 6 is described as the calmest. You can head home via General Osório station, towards Ipanema. One visitor reports that taxis get scarce after midnight for long trips, so plan your way back in advance.
On a budget. The party is usually free. The metro pass (R$15 to R$15.80 in 2025/26) can replace a taxi home. Street vendors sell beer, water and coconut, but glass is banned at the entrance: a glass bottle can be confiscated.
First time. Buy the pass before 31 December, bring a small see-through bag, and find your lifeguard post.
What other guides don’t tell you
Several pages present the 2025/26 edition as if it were 2026/27. The six points below, taken from dated press and two official pages (FCDO and voyage.gc.ca), are the most useful to keep in mind.
- The 2026/27 programme isn’t published. Many guides list the 2025/26 artists and times. The press is waiting for confirmation in December (Rádio Itatiaia, 15 October 2026; The Rio Times, 11 September 2026) (checked 25 October 2026).
- The pass sells online, but guides disagree. The Diário do Transporte describes online sales until 6 pm on 31 December 2025, while Bonjourrio mentions ticket offices until 24 December (Diário do Transporte, 26 December 2025; Bonjourrio, 25 November 2025) (checked 25 October 2026).
- Not every vehicle is blocked at 7 pm. In 2025/26, access was blocked at 7 pm, all vehicles in Copacabana at 9 pm, and Avenida Atlântica closed from 7 am on 31 December (CET-Rio via Diário do Transporte, 26 December 2025) (checked 25 October 2026).
- Two stages, two start times. In 2025/26, the Samba stage started at 6 pm with DJ Tamy, and the Rio stage at 8 pm with Gilberto Gil and Ney Matogrosso. Guides often give « 6 pm » or « 8 pm » for the whole night (Billboard Brasil, 4 December 2025) (checked 25 October 2026).
- Glass isn’t banned the same way everywhere. The Jornal do Brasil (26 December 2025) reports the ban at the entrance. Municipal decree 56.160/2025 (Ordem Pública, September 2025) only allows glass on the sand in containers supplied by the seafront kiosks (checked 25 October 2026).
- The 2.6 million figure isn’t an official tally. The expected figure was 2.5 million according to the press, and the 2.6 million figure attributed to Riotur is a press estimate published after the event (Jornal do Brasil, 26 December 2025, and January 2026 press) (checked 25 October 2026).
Practical info: entry rules, eSIM and insurance before you go
Before you leave: entry rules and the consulate
For a tourist stay of around 90 days, the FCDO’s Brazil entry requirements say UK passport holders don’t need a visa for tourism for up to 90 days. Check the entry requirements page before you travel, as rules can change.
The FCDO also says your passport must be valid for at least six months after your arrival. That’s the official rule, so check your expiry date now rather than at the airport.
The British Consulate-General in Rio de Janeiro is at Praia do Flamengo 284, Flamengo. It works by appointment only (GOV.UK, British Consulate-General Rio de Janeiro, checked 25 October 2026). Check the phone number and opening hours on that page before you travel.
A working connection and valid insurance before you leave will spare you from hunting for signal or an emergency fix during the party.
Plans are sold by country: check that Brazil is covered before you buy.
Price shown on the site, varies with plan lengthInsurance covers medical costs and repatriation. Check the cover for a crowded party, the heat and night-time travel.
Price depends on age and trip length, shown on the siteFrequently asked questions about Copacabana New Year’s Eve
Is the Copacabana New Year’s Eve 2026 fireworks show confirmed?
The date is a tradition: the party takes place every 31 December in Copacabana. The 2026/27 programme wasn’t published as of 25 October 2026. Rádio Itatiaia reported on 15 October that the artists, times and transport plan hadn’t been officially announced, and The Rio Times expects confirmation in December. Check the City’s announcements at that point.
What time do the fireworks start?
No official time has been published for 2026/27. In 2025/26 the launch was around midnight by tradition, with no precise time published. Don’t time your arrival to an exact slot, and follow the announcements on site.
How long do the fireworks last, and how many barges are used?
In 2025/26 the display lasted 12 minutes and was fired from 19 barges offshore, up from 10 the year before, according to the Jornal do Brasil on 26 December 2025. Figures for 2026/27 aren’t published.
Do I need a metro pass?
The metro isn’t mandatory, but private vehicles are banned from Copacabana from 7 pm, and all are blocked by 9 pm (2025/26). The New Year’s Eve pass cost R$15 or R$15.80 return, depending on the source. The Diário do Transporte says online sales until 6 pm on 31 December, while Bonjourrio says ticket offices until 24 December: the sources disagree. The 2026/27 terms aren’t published, so check MetrôRio’s channel in December.
Can I bring glass, alcohol or fireworks?
Glass is banned at the entrance according to the Jornal do Brasil (26 December 2025), and street vendors can’t sell it. We found no rule covering alcohol other than in glass, and the press reports informal beer sales. Private fireworks are in principle banned by a 2022 municipal law, but we haven’t checked how it’s enforced. The 2026/27 rules aren’t published: bring a small see-through bag and skip the glass.
What time is it in Rio compared with London?
Rio is 3 hours behind London in December, or 2 hours if daylight saving time comes back. Whether that happens for 2026/27 hasn’t been decided, so check the rule in force when you travel.
What’s the best beach spot to watch the fireworks?
Bonjourrio recommends Posto 5 for atmosphere and visibility (25 November 2025). According to The Rio Times (11 September 2026), posts 3 to 5 are the busiest, and Posto 3 is closest to the main stage. Leme and Posto 6 are described as calmer.
Should I book a hotel?
Yes, book early. Demand is high in Copacabana and Leme, with 80.95% occupancy reported for the 2025/26 New Year’s Eve (Panrotas, December 2025). No rate for 31 December 2026 has been published in the sources we checked, so don’t rely on any figure without checking when you book.
