In 2026, La Défense is the easiest Paris Christmas market to plan: it is the only one of the three whose organiser has published its dates (chalets from 12 November to 31 December 2026), opening hours and access, with free entertainment. The Tuileries and Montmartre have no official dates yet, so your choice depends on your profile.
Checked on against the organiser’s page for La Défense, read in full, and dated press and listing extracts.
Paris has three main Christmas markets, and they don’t feel alike. The Tuileries one sits on the walk between the Louvre and the Concorde, La Défense is the biggest, and Montmartre is the most intimate. Not all of them have published dates for the 2026-2027 season, and that is the first thing to check before you choose. La Défense is the only market whose organiser has published its 2026 season. The Tuileries and Montmartre rely on listings alone.
1. Which one to choose for your profile
There is no official ranking of Paris Christmas markets, and the lists published by the guide press don’t explain how they are made. The most solid criterion is how far the 2026 season is confirmed: La Défense is the only one of the three whose organiser has published the full calendar. The table compares the three markets on the edition best documented for each, and says which edition that is.
| Criterion | Tuileries (2025-2026) | La Défense (2026) | Montmartre (2025-2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dates | 14 November 2025 to 4 January 2026 | 12 November to 31 December 2026 (Sommet: until 3 January 2027) | 21 November 2025 to 4 January 2026 |
| Hours | 11 am to 11:45 pm, every day | Monday to Thursday 11 am to 9 pm; Friday 11 am to 11 pm; Saturday 10 am to 11 pm; Sunday 11 am to 9:30 pm | 10 am to 8 pm, every day |
| Size | 80 wooden chalets | Not quantified by the organiser; 300 to nearly 400 chalets according to the press | Around twenty exhibitors |
| Entertainment | Not detailed in the source | Free and open to all; workshops for children | Father Christmas on Sundays, 11 am to 1 pm |
| Access | Metro line 1 (Tuileries station) | RER A and E, metro line 1, tram 2, Transilien U and L | Metro line 12 (Abbesses station), to be checked |
| Accessibility | Step-free access listed (2025), details not documented | Main paths accessible by wheelchair | Not documented |
| Organiser | Le Monde Festif (per the page) | Site organiser, per xmasparisladefense.com | Not identified |

To decide, start from what you’re looking for:
- A family with children. La Défense. The entertainment is free, the Sommet ice rink stays open until 3 January 2027, and some creative workshops are reserved for children. Watch out for the shorter hours on 24 and 31 December (closing at 6 pm).
- A couple who want to wander. Montmartre, for the neighbourhood atmosphere and the view over the hill. This choice assumes the 2026 dates are confirmed by the time you travel: they aren’t yet as of writing.
- A stop in the centre, between two sights. The Tuileries. The garden combines easily with the Louvre and the Concorde, as long as you check metro access at weekends.
- A tight budget. The main cost is spending at the chalets, and we found no price list from exhibitors for any of the three markets. Entertainment at La Défense is free; the ice rink and rides have prices that aren’t published in the sources we read.
- A first trip to Paris. Start with La Défense if you want clear organisation (hours, access and accessibility all published), then add an evening at the Tuileries if your schedule allows.
If you’d rather a Christmas market further from the capital, our article on the Christmas markets of Alsace’s villages in 2026 offers a different mood, to combine with a weekend on the spot.
2. 2026 dates: what’s confirmed and what isn’t
Dates are what changes most from one site to another. A listing in an events guide can repeat last year’s dates, or announce a period nobody has checked with the organiser. So the table separates the dates published by the organiser from press announcements and listings.
| Market | Opening | Closing | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| La Défense (chalets) | 12 November 2026 | 31 December 2026 | Confirmed by the organiser |
| La Défense (Sommet, ice rink) | 12 November 2026 | 3 January 2027 | Confirmed by the organiser |
| Champs-Élysées | 22 November 2026 | 4 January 2027 | Press announcement |
| Tuileries | 14 November 2026 (listing) | 3 January 2027 (listing) | Not confirmed, conflicting dates across listings |
| Montmartre (Abbesses) | November 2026 | Early January 2027 | Not confirmed, exact dates to come |
| Saint-Germain-des-Prés | Late November 2026 | Early January 2027 | Not confirmed, « to be confirmed » |
| Notre-Dame (square René Viviani) | Not published | Not published | No 2026 dates published |

In practice, a ticket or accommodation booking for La Défense can be lined up with the organiser’s dates right now. For the Tuileries and Montmartre, wait for the organiser to publish dates, or at least a recent confirmation, before building a programme around a specific slot. The 2025-2026 dates are still a useful ballpark: they ran from mid-November to early January.
3. Tuileries: the market on the central walk

Jardin des Tuileries, Paris 1st arrondissement
The market sets up in the Tuileries garden, between the Louvre and the Concorde, at the address Le Bonbon gives (113 rue de Rivoli). For the 2025-2026 edition, the page announced 80 wooden chalets, 80% of them French artisans, open every day from 11 am to 11:45 pm. The market has been in the garden since 2018, and the association Le Monde Festif is named as the organiser. Le Bonbon, 2025-2026 edition, accessed 27 October 2026.
For 2026-2027, nothing is confirmed. One listing gives 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, but other sources cite 6 or 16 November for the opening and 7 or 8 January 2027 for the closing. Don’t plan a trip around these dates until the organiser confirms them.
Highlights
- It pairs well with a visit to the Louvre or a stroll towards the Concorde and the Champs-Élysées.
- A garden atmosphere rather than a business district, with 80 chalets along the paths.
- Long hours: 11 am to 11:45 pm in 2025-2026, handy for an evening outing.
Step-free access is mentioned on the 2025 listing (Offi), but no source we read describes the ground surface or the slopes. Ask the organiser before you come with a wheelchair.
If you’d rather not plan the route yourself, this private night tour by car, offered by Viator, centres on the Champs-Élysées, with the Vendôme illuminations and a stop at the Galeries Lafayette. Its itinerary also includes about 30 minutes in the Tuileries garden, but it isn’t a tour of that garden. It suits a couple or a small group who want a private car in the evening, without the metro. According to Viator, pickup and drop-off are included, within Paris limits only. The catch: the Ferris wheel isn’t included and costs extra (€20 per adult, €12 per child, according to Viator). The product is bookable on 15 days out of 31 in December 2026 (1, 3 to 10, 12 to 15, 17 and 21 December), checked on 27 October 2026. For two adults the total is €600 (€300 per person), and the price varies by date and number of travellers.
4. La Défense: the biggest and the easiest to plan

La Défense district, Grande Arche
Set up around the Grande Arche, the La Défense market is the only one of the three whose organiser has published the full 2026 season: dates, hours, access and accessibility. The chalet market runs from 12 November to 31 December 2026, and the Sommet, a festive square with an ice rink, extends the mood until 3 January 2027. The organiser’s practical info, accessed 27 October 2026.
Entertainment is free and open to all. Some workshops, creative or make-up, are reserved for children. Purchases at the chalets, however, are paid.
Hours, public holidays included
| Day | Market (chalets) | Sommet (ice rink) |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Wednesday | 11 am to 9 pm | 11 am to 9 pm |
| Thursday | 11 am to 9 pm | 11 am to 10 pm |
| Friday | 11 am to 11 pm | 11 am to 11 pm |
| Saturday | 10 am to 11 pm | 10 am to 11 pm |
| Sunday | 11 am to 9:30 pm | 11 am to 9:30 pm |
| 24 and 31 December | 11 am to 6 pm | 11 am to 6 pm |
| 25 December and 1 January | 3 pm to 11 pm | 3 pm to 11 pm |
Source: xmasparisladefense.com, practical info, checked on 27 October 2026. The 2026 hours are those the organiser published on that date.
Highlights
- Main paths are wheelchair-accessible, with the access points marked on the market map.
- Plenty of transport: RER A and E, metro line 1 (the « Porte Traineau Souterrain » entrance), tram 2 and Transilien U and L.
- An ice rink that carries the visit on after the chalets, until 3 January 2027.
The organiser’s 2025 review announced more than 1.5 million visits by 14 December 2025, for a 30th edition presented as a record (Défense-92). That is a visitor figure announced by the organiser, not an audited one. We found no independent review of the atmosphere or the crowds in the sources we checked: the number tells you how many people come, not what they experience on the spot.
Public transport serves La Défense – Grande Arche station, and several bus lines stop there too. The organiser’s page lists 12 bus lines but names 16, so check the current list before you travel. Covered, paid car parks are nearby, but no price is published on the organiser’s page.
5. Montmartre: the makers’ village

Place des Abbesses, at the foot of the Sacré-Cœur
The Montmartre market sets up on the Place des Abbesses, a few metres from the Sacré-Cœur basilica. In 2025-2026, Le Bonbon listed around twenty designers and artisans, all French, selling jewellery, pottery, scarves and decorations, as well as honey, foie gras, pretzels, cheeses, teas, macarons and mulled wine. Le Bonbon, Montmartre (published 11 November 2025), accessed 27 October 2026.
For 2026, the only information available is an events listing: « from November 2026 to early January 2027, every day from 10 am to 8 pm », with exact dates « to come ». That listing mentions about fifteen makers, a different count from the 2025 edition. The organiser hasn’t been identified, and no official site has been published for the 2026 edition.
Highlights
- The smallest of the three: one square and a few chalets, easy to combine with a visit to the Sacré-Cœur.
- A clear positioning: French makers and products, according to the press.
- A Father Christmas who meets children on Sundays from 11 am to 1 pm, according to the 2025-2026 edition.
For access, the nearest station is Abbesses on line 12. The source page doesn’t detail the access routes: check the journey on ratp.fr before you set off.
6. Other markets mentioned for 2026
Four other spots come up in guides and listings. None has the confirmation level of La Défense, but they are useful if your stay falls in a period when one of them is announced.
- Champs-Élysées. The press announces a comeback after ten years away, from 22 November 2026 to 4 January 2027. The City of Paris opened a call for stallholders, which closed on 10 August 2026, and no list of exhibitors is published as of the date of checking. For the illuminations and the switch-on, our dedicated article gives the latest on the date: Champs-Élysées Christmas lights 2026.
- Notre-Dame, square René Viviani. A small market of French artisans, held since 2009. The 2025 edition ran from 28 November to 25 December, with free entry according to the organiser. No 2026 dates are published.
- Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Run by the Comité Saint-Germain, it ran in 2025 from 25 November 2025 to 1 January 2026, on the boulevard. The 2026 dates are announced as « to be confirmed ».
- Champ de Mars, foot of the Eiffel Tower. A 2026 listing presents it as free, with dates « to come ». That isn’t confirmed: leave it off your plans until an official source publishes it.
For a trip outside Paris, the guide to the Rothenburg Christmas market covers another destination this season, with its own dates and hours.
What other guides don’t tell you
Guides and listings that search engines pick up mostly give dates. Here are the points checked against an official source or a dated document, missing or incomplete in the listings we read.
- La Défense’s hours on public holidays. The market closes at 6 pm on 24 and 31 December, and opens from 3 pm to 11 pm on 25 December and 1 January. Event listings only give the dates. The organiser’s practical info (accessed 27 October 2026).
- The weekend closure of the Tuileries metro. In 2025-2026, the RATP closed the station’s entrances at weekends from 4 pm to 11:45 pm, from 22 November to 4 January, and Le Bonbon doesn’t mention this. The point was reported by the press and needs reconfirming for 2026 on ratp.fr. Sortiraparis, access to the Tuileries station (search extract checked 27 October 2026, page not read in full).
- La Défense’s stated footfall. The organiser announced more than 1.5 million visits by 14 December 2025, against a target of 2 million. It is an unaudited figure, which general guides don’t repeat. Défense-92, 1.5 million visits (search extract checked 27 October 2026).
Practical info before you go
La Défense is reached by RER A or E, metro line 1 and tram 2. If your route goes beyond Nanterre-Préfecture, the RER A is interrupted on the evening of Monday 30 November 2026 between Nanterre-Préfecture and Cergy / Poissy, with replacement shuttles (press report, to be confirmed on ratp.fr). At the Tuileries, the metro station is on line 1, but its entrances were closed at weekends in 2025-2026: check on ratp.fr. For Montmartre, Abbesses station is on line 12.
A visit operator said that, at the Notre-Dame market in 2025, some stallholders didn’t accept card payments. No equivalent note was found for the three markets compared here: if in doubt, carry a few notes.
No specific security measures for the 2026 Paris Christmas markets had been published as of the date of checking. Limiting large luggage is still useful. On pickpocketing, Paris je t’aime advises carrying your bag in front of you, closed, in a crowd. For payment, carry a few notes.
According to several concordant secondary sources, zone C, which includes Paris, would have its Christmas holidays from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. Confirm these dates on the official Éducation nationale calendar before you book anything.
The seasonal forecasts available for winter 2026-2027 are national trends, not Paris figures. Check Météo-France a few days before you leave for the forecast for Paris.
Frequently asked questions about the Paris Christmas markets
When does the Paris Christmas market open?
There isn’t one single date. The La Défense market opens its chalets on 12 November 2026, and the Sommet closes on 3 January 2027, according to the organiser. The Tuileries (14 November 2026 according to a listing), Montmartre (November 2026) and the Champs-Élysées (22 November according to the press) have no confirmed official date as of the 27 October 2026 checking date.
Where is the Paris Christmas market?
There are three main sites. The Tuileries garden (Paris 1st arrondissement) sits between the Louvre and the Concorde. The La Défense market is set up around the Grande Arche, in the Hauts-de-Seine, reached by RER A or metro line 1 from Paris; check the journey time on a current route planner. The Montmartre market is on the Place des Abbesses (Paris 18th), at the foot of the Sacré-Cœur.
Is there a Paris Christmas market that is wheelchair accessible?
Yes for La Défense: the main paths are wheelchair-accessible according to the organiser, which marks the access points on the market map. At the Tuileries, the 2025 listing mentions step-free access without detailing the surface or the slopes: ask the organiser before you go. For Montmartre, accessibility isn’t documented in the sources we read.
Which is the best Paris Christmas market?
There is no official ranking, and the lists in the guide press don’t publish their method. The most solid objective criterion in 2026 is how confirmed the dates are: La Défense is the only one of the three whose organiser has published its hours and access. It is also, according to press estimates, the biggest market, with more than 1.5 million visits announced for the 2025 edition.
What are the opening hours of the La Défense Christmas market in 2026?
According to the organiser, the chalets open Monday to Thursday from 11 am to 9 pm, on Friday from 11 am to 11 pm, on Saturday from 10 am to 11 pm and on Sunday from 11 am to 9:30 pm. On 24 and 31 December, the market closes at 6 pm. On 25 December and 1 January, it opens from 3 pm to 11 pm. The table in section four also gives the ice rink hours.
Does the Tuileries market close the metro entrances at weekends?
In 2025-2026, yes. According to the RATP as reported in the press, the entrances to the Tuileries station (line 1) were closed at weekends from 4 pm to 11:45 pm, from 22 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, to ease the crowds. Concorde and Palais-Royal – Musée du Louvre were the stations to use instead. No equivalent announcement has been found for 2026: check ratp.fr before you go.
Is the La Défense market accessible by wheelchair?
Yes for the main paths, according to the organiser, which marks the specific access points on the market map. For the journey to the station, lift and access checks fall to the RATP or Île-de-France Mobilités: we didn’t consult their pages for this article, so check before you set off.
Should I bring cash to the Paris Christmas markets?
To be safe, yes. A visit operator reported that at Notre-Dame in 2025 some stallholders didn’t accept card. We found no equivalent mention for the three markets compared in this article. If in doubt, keep a few notes on you, and ask at the stall whether they take cards.
Are the Montmartre market dates known for 2026?
Not yet. An events listing gives an opening in November 2026 and an end in early January 2027, with exact dates « to come ». The organiser hasn’t been identified, and no official site had been published as of the 27 October 2026 checking date. The 2025-2026 edition ran from 21 November to 4 January, with hours of 10 am to 8 pm.
