Eleven day trips from Tromsø are bookable this winter, from $112.68 per adult (based on 2 travelers), with ratings from 4.72 to 4.95. Winter changes the question. In Tromsø, the sun stays below the horizon for weeks at a time from late November, so a day trip in January is a different outing from one in July. Daylight is short, roads can be slick, and the good hours are the middle ones. This guide is for travelers who want to get out of the city during the day rather than chase the northern lights at night.
We went through the Viator catalog for Tromsø, kept the products with strong ratings and enough reviews to judge, and checked which of them are open on the dates that matter, from November 16, 2026 to January 14, 2027. Eleven survived that check. They cover fjord drives and boat trips, a self-drive husky run, snowshoes, a beginner ski lesson, a snowmobile day to the Finnish border, and two Sámi reindeer camps. Each card below gives you the facts, the trade-offs and the kind of traveler it suits.
If your priority is the aurora, this list is not for you. Night aurora tours are not included here, and they are covered in our separate guide to the northern lights from Tromsø. Nothing in this list is a night tour. If you want the broadest first day, start with the Arctic Fjord Roadtrip with Scenic Picnic, or jump to the comparison table to see prices and availability side by side.
Prices are shown per adult, based on two travelers, because that is the basis we could compare across all eleven products. They change by date, so we record the day we checked them and treat every figure as a snapshot. Check the live price on the product page before you book.
Why Winter Changes the Day Trip From Tromsø
Tromsø sits on Tromsøya, an island in northern Norway, and most of the day trips in this list leave the city on the same few roads. Kvaløya, the large island to the west, holds the fjord loops and the mountain valleys. Sommarøy, a small island village with a beach, is a common stop, and Norway Explained covers the village and its beach.
The Lyngen Alps sit across the water and host one of the two reindeer camps in this list. The Sámi are the Indigenous people of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula, and the background on the Sámi people is useful before you visit a camp. Two of the eleven products involve Sámi culture or reindeer directly. Treat those visits as an encounter with a living culture rather than a show: listen to the guides, follow their rules around the animals, and ask before you take close photos of people.
Winter asks for a different plan. The Visit Tromsø winter season page describes the polar night and the outdoor trips that run through the cold months, and the practical result is simple: schedule the outdoor part of the day around the middle hours and keep an indoor option for late afternoon. Our guide to the polar night in Tromsø covers the season in more detail.
Drive times matter more than they look on a map. Norway Explained puts the trip to Ersfjordbotn at about 45 minutes, to Sommarøy at about 1 hour 15 minutes, and to Breivikeidet, the ferry point for the Lyngen side, at about an hour, all from the city center. These are approximate, so add a buffer for snow and for the time it takes to get to your pickup point. We did not find a sourced drive time to the Finnish border, so for that trip we give the length of the day (10 hours) and no road time.
We looked at rating and review count first, then at how many dates in the window each product is open, because a trip you cannot book on your day is no trip at all. The lowest availability among the eleven is 26 of the 60 days, for the snowmobile run, and the rest are open on at least 36 days. Availability is the figure most likely to change, so check it on the product page once your dates are fixed.

The 11 Best Day Trips From Tromsø in Winter

1. Kvaløya Loop With a Picnic Stop
This is the most complete winter drive in the list. The route circles Kvaløya, the island beside the city, through mountain valleys, fishing villages and Arctic beaches, with fjords and lakes in view for much of the day. At 5 to 6 hours it is the longest of the fjord road trips, so it suits you if you want the most landscape for your time. A homemade light picnic is served on the route, and the listing includes pickup in the city center. Choose it for a full day outside and a long stretch in the car. If you get carsick on winding roads, pick the minibus version below instead. The open dates are the thing to check first: 51 of the 60 days in the window are bookable.
- Homemade light picnic, cookies and hot drinks
- Pickup and drop-off in Tromsø city center
- Kvaløya loop past mountains, beaches, fjords and lakes

2. Sommarøy and Ersfjordbotn by Minibus
This is the minibus version of the fjord drive. You ride with a guide and a driver around Kvaløya, with stops at Ersfjordbotn and Sommarøy, the small island village with a beach. Norway Explained puts the drive at about 45 minutes to Ersfjordbotn and about 1 hour 15 minutes to Sommarøy, so the stops are short and most of the trip is the view from the window. The listing says reindeer and sea eagles can appear, but it cannot be promised, so treat wildlife as a bonus. The price has the widest spread in the list, from $135.44 to $226.51 per adult depending on the date, so compare a few days before you pay. The listing sets a fixed booking cutoff at 8:30 a.m., so read the cutoff rule on the booking page. Meet 20 minutes before departure; the listing gives no street address, so keep your confirmation handy.
- Stops at Ersfjordbotn and Sommarøy
- Pastries, snacks, hot drinks and an air-conditioned vehicle
- Fixed 8:30 a.m. booking cutoff

3. Small-Group Fjord Road Trip With a Picnic
This small-group road trip runs along the coastal fjords near Tromsø, with photo stops and a picnic meal in the Arctic. At 4.5 hours it is a full outing without a long day in the car. The listing shows a single price, $155.87 per adult for two travelers, and the listing is open on 57 of the 60 days in the window, which makes it one of the most reliable options here. Coffee or tea comes with the meal. Booking closes 120 minutes before departure, which leaves room to check the forecast on the morning. The guide starts from the Scandic Ishavshotel and does not wait for late arrivals, so be there 15 minutes early. Choose it if you want a small group and a fjord day with lunch on the road. If you want the most landscape per hour, the first trip on this list is the better fit.
- Picnic meal in the Arctic
- Coffee or tea included
- Booking closes 120 minutes before start

4. Small-Group Fjord Boat Tour With Photos
If you want the fjords from the water rather than the road, this is the lowest starting price in the list. The five-hour tour runs in a small group, with snacks, hot drinks and photos included, and the listing is open on 57 of the 60 days in the window. Two details need a check before you book. The price band is for travelers aged 18 and over only, so this is not a family option. And the meeting point is the Magic Ice Bar in Tromsø at 10:00 a.m., with pickup on request from the Breivika cruise terminal. If you arrive on a cruise ship, ask in advance. We picked it for a boat day on a budget, and for photographers who want the water without a long road transfer.
- Snacks, hot drinks and photos
- Adults only: age 18 and over
- Pickup on request from the Breivika cruise terminal

5. Winter Fishing and Fish Soup on a Fjord
This is a five-hour winter boat trip from Tromsø built around fishing. The listing includes fishing equipment, fish soup with bread (a vegetarian version is available), thermal suits, lunch, and coffee or tea. Alcoholic drinks are not included. On the dates we checked, it was open on 50 of the 60 days in the window. One point needs checking before you book. The same listing describes two experiences, an all-inclusive fishing trip and a classic cruise, and it does not say which one the price covers. The listing includes fishing equipment, but if fishing is why you are coming, ask the operator which version you are booking before you pay. The meeting point is the main pier at Killengreensgate 7 to 11, 15 minutes before departure; look for the company flag and staff in logo jackets.
- Fishing equipment and fish soup with bread
- Thermal suits and lunch included
- Confirm which version your price covers

6. Self-Drive Husky Sledding in Pairs
This is the most hands-on option in the list. You do not ride behind a guide: you drive your own sled, harnessed to a team of five or six Alaskan huskies, in pairs. The guide leads the trail, and you spend 70 to 80 minutes on it. A private minibus takes you from the Scandic Ishavshotel to the kennel, and thermal suits, coffee or tea, cake and snacks are included, so the cold is the main thing to plan for. The listing sets the minimum age at 7 and allows groups of up to 20 guests. At $372.98 per adult for two travelers, it is one of the most expensive products here, and it is open on only 36 of the 60 days in the window, so check the date before you plan a whole day around it. The listing does not state a fitness level. If you have never handled a sled or a team of dogs, ask the operator before you book.
- Drive your own team in pairs
- Thermal suits and private minibus transfer
- Minimum age 7

7. Snowshoeing in the Valleys Above Tromsø
Snowshoeing is the gentlest way to see the mountain side of Tromsø. This small-group walk climbs a mountain or follows a valley near the city, with fjord views along the way. Snowshoes and poles, a light meal, photos, and coffee or tea are included, and the hotel pickup at the Scandic Ishavshotel is part of the trip. It is the one product here open on every one of the 60 days in the window, so it is the most flexible choice if your dates are not fixed. The listing sets the minimum age at 13. It also notes that without snow the walk is done on foot, which can happen early in the season, so pack for both. At $144.74 to $183.71 per adult for two travelers, it is a good pick for four active hours without a driving leg.
- Snowshoes and poles included
- Hotel pickup at the Scandic Ishavshotel
- Minimum age 13

8. Beginner Cross-Country Skiing
If you have never been on cross-country skis, this is the lesson to choose. An instructor teaches the basics, and the price includes skis, boots and poles, transport to and from the city center, and a hot drink with lefse, the Norwegian flatbread. The listing offers a morning start at 9:00 a.m. and an afternoon start at 1:30 p.m., and it meets at Tromsø Outdoor on Fredrik Langes gate 14, 10 minutes before departure. The listing does not state how long the lesson lasts, so we have not written a length for it; ask the operator before you plan the rest of your day. It was open on 57 of the 60 days in the window. The booking is not instant, so check the confirmation timing on the product page before you rely on a fixed date. It suits a first winter activity with little risk. It does not suit a group that needs a guaranteed instant booking.
- Instructor, skis, boots and poles
- Transport to and from the city center
- Starts at 9:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.

9. Snowmobile Day to the Three-Country Border
This is the longest and most demanding day on the list: a 10-hour snowmobile trip from Tromsø toward the Finnish Lapland border at Treriksröset, the cairn where Norway, Sweden and Finland meet. The hot meal is included, and the operator gives a safety briefing before the ride. The route can change with weather and snow. Adults aged 8 and over can ride. The confirmation is manual, and the listing says it is confirmed within 7 days of booking. The price runs from $367.42 to $445.35 per adult for two travelers, and the trip is open on 26 of the 60 days in the window, the lowest availability in the set. The listing gives the deductible as 1,000 EUR, payable by the driver in case of damage, and we quote it in euros because that is the currency the supplier uses. The listing gives the Tromsø Havn Prostneset bus terminal as the starting point, so plan your morning around that.
- Hot meal included
- Adults aged 8 and over
- Manual confirmation within 7 days

10. Sámi Camp, Reindeer and a Short Sled Ride
This is a morning or afternoon visit to a Sámi reindeer camp outside Tromsø. You feed a herd of about 300 reindeer, take a sled ride of 10 to 15 minutes, and sit down to a meal in a Sámi tent around the fire. Lunch, snacks, and coffee or tea are included, and a guide performs a joik, the traditional Sámi song. The pickup is at the Tromsø Havn Prostneset bus terminal, at 9:40 a.m. for the morning tour or 12:40 p.m. for the afternoon, and the guides wear blue jackets so you can spot them. The price runs from $210.43 to $232.70 per adult for two travelers, and the experience is open on 50 of the 60 days in the window. Treat the camp as a working place. Follow the guide’s instructions around the animals and inside the tent. Choose it for a cultural visit with a hands-on animal component, and skip it if you want a long outdoor day rather than a camp.
- Feed a herd of about 300 reindeer
- Sámi tent meal around the fire
- Morning or afternoon departure

11. Reindeer Feeding in the Lyngen Alps
This camp sits in the Lyngen Alps, and the listing presents it as the family-friendly option of the two reindeer experiences. Lunch, coffee or tea, and the bus transfer are included, so the day is mostly about the camp itself: feeding the reindeer, meeting the people who run it, and learning about Sámi culture. The area is well outside the city, which is why the included bus is the practical part of the ticket. Check in at the main entrance of the Radisson Blu Hotel Tromsø at 9:45 a.m., with the person in the blue cape or poncho wearing the Tromso Lapland logo. At $188.72 to $210.99 per adult for two travelers, it is open on 59 of the 60 days in the window, the highest availability of the two reindeer camps. Viator flags it as likely to sell out, so book once your dates are fixed. Choose it with children or with a group that wants lunch in the mountains.
- Lunch, coffee or tea and bus transfer
- Family-friendly, according to the listing
- Viator flags it as likely to sell out
Before You Book
The number of open days in the window ranges from 26 to 60 of 60. The snowmobile run and the self-drive husky trip are the two to check first, since they are open on the fewest days. Viator shows live availability on each product page, and that is the figure to trust over any article, including this one.
Thermal suits appear in the husky and fishing listings, and the other products do not say the same, so read each one. Dress in layers, bring gloves and a hat, and ask the operator what is provided before you book. Outdoor trips in the polar night are cold even on mild days, and wind on the water feels colder than the thermometer says.
Booking closes 120 minutes before departure on the Winter Fjord Road Trip, and the minibus tour has a fixed 8:30 a.m. cutoff. The snowmobile run and the beginner ski lesson are not instant-confirm, so leave time for a reply before you plan the rest of the day around them.
On the Ground: Who Each Trip Suits
Families with children. The reindeer camp in the Lyngen Alps is the one the listing calls family-friendly, and it includes lunch and the bus transfer. Ages matter for the others: the husky run starts at 7, the snowshoe walk at 13, and the snowmobile run at 8. The fjord boat tour is for travelers aged 18 and over only, so leave it off a family itinerary.
First-time winter visitors. Start with a trip that asks little of you. The beginner ski lesson includes an instructor, equipment and transport from the city center. The minibus fjord tour keeps you warm and seated while you see Ersfjordbotn and Sommarøy. Save the self-drive husky run and the snowmobile day for the second half of the trip, when you have a feel for the cold.
Budget. The lowest starting price is the boat tour at $112.68 per adult for two travelers, followed by the beginner ski lesson at $146.41 and the snowshoe walk from $144.74. The most expensive options are the husky run at $372.98 and the snowmobile day, which runs up to $445.35 per adult. Viator shows the price for two travelers, so a solo traveler should check whether the single-traveler rate is higher.
Limited mobility. The listing data we used does not mention wheelchair access for any of the eleven. Ask the operator before you book. Snowmobile, husky and snowshoe trips involve getting on and off equipment or walking on snow, and the fjord trips include stops where you step out of the vehicle.
Getting around. Most pickups happen in the city center, at the Tromsø Havn Prostneset bus terminal, or at a hotel. Only some listings include hotel pickup, so ask when you book if you are staying outside the center. Several meeting points have a specific entrance or flag, so read the directions in your confirmation before you leave.
Money and tipping. Viator quotes these prices in US dollars, and your card will convert them with its own fee. Tipping is not expected in Norway, where service is usually included, but a small tip after a good day is a common gesture. Treat it as optional.
Pacing your days. Most of these trips run in the middle of the day, and daylight is short. Book the morning or the early afternoon, eat a proper lunch, and leave the evening free. The night aurora tours are a separate choice; see our northern lights guide if you plan to add one.
Questions Travelers Ask About Tromsø Day Trips
What is the best-rated day trip from Tromsø in winter?
The snowshoe walk in the valleys above Tromsø has the highest rating in this list, 4.95 from 483 reviews, and it is open on all 60 days in the window. The Kvaløya loop and the Sommarøy minibus tour share a 4.92 rating, with 759 and 559 reviews. The Kvaløya loop suits travelers who want the most landscape, and the minibus suits those who want shorter stops. See card 7, card 1 and card 2 for the details.
Do these day trips include the northern lights?
No. Night aurora tours are excluded from this list because they are a different product. Our separate guide to the northern lights from Tromsø covers those tours. Every product here is a daytime or early-afternoon outing, and none of them promises an aurora sighting.
Do I need experience to drive a husky sled or a snowmobile?
The self-drive husky run has you driving your own sled in pairs, with a minimum age of 7 in the listing. The snowmobile day is for adults aged 8 and over and goes to the Finnish border over 10 hours. Neither listing sets a formal fitness or experience level. If you have never driven either, ask the operator before booking, and choose the beginner ski lesson or the guided snowshoe walk first.
How far in advance should I book?
Book as soon as your dates are firm, especially for the Lyngen reindeer camp, which Viator flags as likely to sell out. Check each booking cutoff, since the minibus trip closes at a fixed 8:30 a.m. and the Winter Fjord Road Trip closes 120 minutes before start. The snowmobile day and the ski lesson are not instant, so allow time for a confirmation.
Is free cancellation really free?
All eleven products list free cancellation in the Viator data we checked on November 2, 2026. The cutoff for a free cancellation differs by product, so read the cancellation terms on the product page before you pay. Prices and availability can also change between the date we checked and the date you book.
Are these trips suitable for children?
It depends on the trip. The Lyngen reindeer camp is listed as family-friendly. The husky run starts at age 7, the snowshoe walk at 13, and the snowmobile run at 8. The fjord boat tour is for travelers aged 18 and over only, and the fishing cruise lists no minimum age in the data we used, so ask before you book. Check the minimum age on each product page before you add a child to a booking.
