As of November 2, 2026, the two full-day group tours from Ponta Delgada cost €85 per adult (based on 2 people). Both can be cancelled free of charge, with ratings of 4.95 and 4.96. Canyoning and the boat trip have the fewest open days: 20 and 15 out of 60. Start with the west tour.
Checked on against the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).
If you land in Ponta Delgada, the airport is two or three kilometers (about 1.5 to 2 miles) from the center, and the island opens up quickly from there. On the map, São Miguel, the largest of the Azores, looks compact. On the ground, it packs three very different landscapes into one week: the crater lakes of Sete Cidades to the west, the steaming valley of Furnas to the east, and a rougher north coast with cliffs, caves and fishing villages.
My selection has ten experiences. Five include pickup in Ponta Delgada or Lagoa (one only on request), and the other five start from a precise meeting point, set in the listing or given at booking, often outside the city. I chose them for what they offer and for how they fit together, not to make the longest list. Each price is per person for two adults, checked on the Viator partner API on November 2, 2026. Each availability figure is measured over the 60 days from November 16, 2026 to January 14, 2027. So I am not giving you departure dates. I am giving you the number of open days, so you can judge for yourself.
If you only book one day, take the west tour, with Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, lunch included. It is a full day in a small group, with hotel pickup in the selected areas of Ponta Delgada and Lagoa, and a 4.95 rating from 1,828 reviews. The rest of the selection rounds it out: a trip east, an evening in the Furnas thermal baths, canyoning on the north coast, and a walking tour of the city.
Two notes before you read the cards. First, almost everything needs to be booked in advance, and most excursions only run in small groups. Second, winter changes the picture: it rains more in December and January, night falls early, and water activities depend on the sea that day. The table below summarizes the ten experiences. Each card gives the meeting point, what is included, and the pitfall to avoid.
Why São Miguel from Ponta Delgada: the Pixidia angle
Ponta Delgada is the island’s gateway. The city has the airport and some of the excursions in this selection. A stay of two or three days can therefore be based out of Ponta Delgada. That is the logic of this selection: leave from the city when the excursion allows it, and don’t lose the day to transfers.
The airport is 2 to 3 km (about 1.5 to 2 miles) from the center, roughly ten minutes by car or taxi depending on the rental company (sources: Azores Getaways, getting to São Miguel; Avis, Ponta Delgada location).

Lagoa do Fogo, the crater lake, sits at 776 meters (2,546 feet), and private vehicles are restricted there from June to September, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (source: Azores Getaways, Lagoa do Fogo). That restriction does not apply from October to May: in winter, the constraint is the weather, not the time slot, and the fog stays unpredictable.
The Furnas valley has about thirty active, warm calderas. The Terra Nostra basin reaches 39 °C (102 °F), and cozido, a stew that cooks for hours in the heated ground, is the traditional lunch on the east side (source: Azores Getaways, Furnas). That is why Furnas comes up three times in the selection, by day and by night.
The north coast is rougher: cliffs, caves and fishing villages. That is where the Gorreana plantation is, the oldest tea plantation in Europe. The visit is free according to the Azores Getaways guide, and the Furnas excursion on card 10 includes it (Azores Getaways, tea plantations). Boat and quad departures also leave from this coast, at Rabo de Peixe and Fenais da Luz.
The climate decides the rest. November holds average temperatures of 14 to 19 °C (57 to 66 °F), and December and January 12 to 16 °C (54 to 61 °F). It is also the wettest season: rainfall peaks in December and January, at about 1,200 mm (47 inches) a year on the island (sources: By Açores, São Miguel climate; Weather Spark, Portugal, November). Walking tours and clear viewpoints therefore depend on the day. Water activities and canyoning depend on it even more, which is why they make up only three of the ten cards.

The 10 experiences to book from Ponta Delgada

1. West tour: Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, lunch included
This is the day I recommend first. It starts at your hotel, in the selected areas of Ponta Delgada and Lagoa, and crosses the west of the island in a small group, with eight people maximum per vehicle. The highlight is the view over the twin lakes of Sete Cidades, then the Lagoa do Fogo crater lake, perched at 776 meters (2,546 feet). Lunch is included, with a drink, dessert and coffee, so you don’t have to hunt for a table at mealtime. The pitfall is the weather: from November to January, the viewpoints depend on the day, and the fog stays unpredictable. If you only have a few days, keep a spare day for this tour. And if you want the east, pick card 2 for another day: it goes through Furnas and Nordeste in an electric minibus, while this tour stays on Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo.
- Hotel pickup in the selected areas
- Lunch with a drink, dessert and coffee
- Small group of 8 people maximum per vehicle

2. East tour: Furnas and Nordeste by electric minibus
If the west tour looks toward the lakes, the east tour looks toward the valley. The route goes through Furnas and Nordeste in a 100% electric minibus, with a local guide and natural mineral waters to taste along the way. It suits anyone who wants to see the east without driving and without worrying about the return: pickup and drop-off are at your hotel, in Ponta Delgada or Lagoa. The point to understand concerns card 10: both pass through Furnas during the day. This is not a duplicate, but two ways of seeing the valley. This one favors the minibus, Nordeste and the mineral waters; card 10 favors the Gorreana tea, the Santa Iria viewpoint and a lunch of stew. Choose one of the two, not both on the same day. With 4.96 from 1,331 reviews, it has the highest rating of the full-day tours in the selection.
- 100% electric minibus
- Natural mineral waters to taste on the way
- Local guide and small group of 8 people maximum

3. Furnas at night: thermal baths and dinner with cozido
After dark, Furnas looks different. This six-hour program combines a guided night walk, a soak in the warm springs of Poça da Dona Beija, and a dinner where cozido takes center stage: a stew cooked in the heat of the calderas. It is the option I would choose in winter, when night falls early. You don’t have to fight the light, and the steam rising from the ground makes more sense. The vehicle is air-conditioned, with a driver-guide and insurance included. Dinner includes a drink, dessert and coffee or tea. Bring warm clothes for the ride back, after the bath. It is the only evening option on the list, rated 4.81 from 424 reviews. The experience is open on 55 days out of 60 in the window, and closed on December 24, 25, 30 and 31 and on January 1.
- Soak in the Poça da Dona Beija hot springs
- Cozido cooked in the heat of the calderas
- Air-conditioned vehicle with insurance included

4. Canyoning in Ribeira Grande, on the north coast
This is the best-rated card in the selection, with 4.99 from 984 reviews. It is also one of the most fragile in terms of availability: 20 open days out of 60, all between December 2 and 31. Don’t put it last in your schedule. The meeting point is at the Caldeiras de Ribeira Grande, at Largo das Calderas on the north coast, about twenty minutes from Ponta Delgada. The gear is complete: wetsuit, neoprene socks, boots, helmet and harness, with an experienced guide. The provider asks you to share your height, weight and shoe size before booking. Do it as soon as you book, so the gear is ready on the day. The outing is short, combines well with a day tour, and depends on conditions on the day.
- Wetsuit, socks, boots, helmet and harness provided
- Experienced guide
- Meeting point at the Caldeiras de Ribeira Grande

5. Walking food tour of Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada is more than its airport. This 3.5-hour walking tour, in a small group, has you sample 8 to 10 local products along the way, with lunch and two drinks, beer or house wine. It gives you a feel for the city before heading out to the island’s landscapes, and it is a good first half-day if you arrive late. The meeting point is not listed on the provider’s page: it is shared at booking, in Ponta Delgada. Don’t look for an address elsewhere. Azorean wines are not included in the two drinks: if you want to taste the island’s wines, plan on an extra charge. It is also the most expensive half-day card on the list, at €115 per adult, which the lunch and the tastings justify. It is open on 25 of the 60 days in the window, all falling between November 16 and December 19, but not every day in that span is open: check the calendar when you book.
- 8 to 10 tastings of local products
- Lunch and two drinks, beer or house wine
- Walking tour in a small group

6. Private 8-hour 4×4 tour from Ponta Delgada
This is a different kind of trip. A private eight-hour 4×4 tour with a driver-guide and a flexible itinerary, with hotel pickup included. It is the right choice if you want your own pace, or a rhythm a group cannot offer: you decide where to stop and how long to stay. The trade-off is the price. It is €160 per adult, so €320 for two, against €85 for a group tour of the same length. The pitfall is booking without setting the route with the guide: the flexibility of this format only pays off if you prepare it. With 4.95 from 311 reviews and 55 days open out of 60, it is a reliable option for travelers who want a custom trip. It is closed from December 28 to January 1, which matters if you are booking for the end of the year.
- 4×4 vehicle and driver-guide for 8 hours
- Flexible itinerary, shaped to your interests
- Pickup and return to your hotel in Ponta Delgada

7. Kayak to the Vila Franca do Campo islet, entry included
This outing leaves from the Vila Franca do Campo marina, on the south coast, toward a volcanic islet. A certified guide accompanies the group. Entry is included, along with all fees and taxes: you know what you pay when you book, with no surprises on arrival. Basic gear is provided, with a dry bag for your things. Arrive thirty minutes before departure, as the meeting point asks, so the team can brief you on the gear. The pitfall is the sea: kayaking depends on conditions on the day, so it is better not to plan it for your last day, which leaves you a margin. It is open on 35 of the 60 days in the window, which runs from November 17 to January 14, though not every day in that span is open. The 4.93 rating rests on 129 reviews: a smaller sample than the tours, but consistent with the rest.
- Certified guide and entry included
- All fees and taxes included
- Dry bag provided

8. Boat along the north coast, caves and cliffs from Rabo de Peixe
This outing leaves from the Porto dos Pescadores marina, at Rabo de Peixe on the north coast, and shows you the volcanic coastline from the sea: caves, cliffs and the history of fishing. The listing does not include pickup in Ponta Delgada, so plan your own trip to the marina. It lasts three hours and starts with a briefing before boarding. A life jacket, a coffee or tea, and accident and civil liability insurance are included. Two points to keep in mind. Availability is the lowest on the list: only the days from November 16 to 30 are open, 15 of 60. And confirmation may become manual after booking, depending on the case, so don’t block another part of your trip on that date until you have the confirmation. Like the kayak, the trip depends on the sea. Its rating is 4.95 from 115 reviews.
- Life jacket provided
- Accident and civil liability insurance
- Coffee or tea included

9. Quad to Sete Cidades from the north coast, half day
The quad leaves from the north coast and reaches Sete Cidades by the track. The departure is at Fenais da Luz, on Rua Nossa Senhora das Candeias, on the north coast: the listing does not include pickup in Ponta Delgada. The route then follows the unpaved track to the site. Fuel, helmet, insurance and a tour guide are included. This is the card to choose if you want effort and driving rather than sightseeing. The pitfall is exactly that: a quad requires concentration on a dirt track, and it is not a car ride. If you have already planned the west tour (card 1), this is a more sporty alternative to it, not an add-on. With 59 open days out of 60 and a 4.94 rating from 940 reviews, it is the easiest card to fit into a schedule.
- Fuel, helmet and insurance included
- Access to Sete Cidades by the track
- Tour guide

10. Furnas, Gorreana tea plantation and traditional lunch
This day brings together three things that don’t follow the same logic: a visit to the Gorreana tea plantation, the oldest in Europe according to the listing, a stop at the Santa Iria viewpoint, and a traditional lunch of Furnas stew. The air-conditioned minivan holds eight people at most, and parking is included. Hotel pickup is possible on request; otherwise, the operator shares the departure point at booking. The pitfall is the overlap with card 2, since both pass through Furnas during the day. Choose this one if tea and the coast interest you, and that one if you want the electric minibus and Nordeste. This day is open on all 60 days in the window. Its rating is the lowest in the selection, 4.78 from 232 reviews, but it stays above the quality threshold I set for myself.
- Lunch with starters, Furnas stew and dessert
- Air-conditioned minivan, 8 people maximum
- Tea plantation visit and Santa Iria viewpoint
Preparing your trip
Ponta Delgada airport is 2 to 3 km (about 1.5 to 2 miles) from the center, roughly ten minutes by car or taxi depending on the rental company. Five of the ten experiences include pickup in Ponta Delgada or Lagoa, one of them on request. Four have a precise meeting point listed on the page, and the food tour’s meeting point is shared at booking. A car is not essential for these excursions; it is still useful for getting to Lagoa do Fogo on your own.
November stays between 14 and 19 °C (57 to 66 °F), and December and January between 12 and 16 °C (54 to 61 °F). Rain is heaviest in December and January. Water activities and canyoning remain the most sensitive to the weather.
A full-day group tour costs €85 per adult, based on two adults. For the two full-day group tours, plan on €170 per person, or €340 for a couple. Canyoning is €75 per person, the walking food tour €115, and the private 4×4 tour €160 per person.
Practical tips on the ground
The first tip is about the order of your days. If you have two days, book the west tour (card 1) on the first day, then the east tour (card 2) or the Furnas day with tea (card 10) on the second. The two do not go on the same day, for the overlap reasons explained above. A half-day of quad, canyoning or boat then fits in easily, as long as you leave a margin in case the sea or the weather turns.
The second tip is about rain. December and January are the wettest months, so plan a backup for every outdoor outing. The Furnas excursions remain doable: the thermal baths and night dinner (card 3), and the tea day with the stew lunch (card 10). The walking food tour of Ponta Delgada (card 5) and the private 4×4 tour (card 6) also run in damp weather. The kayak and the boat trip depend on the sea: do not book them for your last day, in case you need to move them.

The third tip concerns the information to share before booking. Canyoning requires your height, weight and shoe size; the walking tour has no address in the listing, and its meeting point is shared at booking.
The fourth tip is about the car. Group excursions include transport for the three main areas. A car is still useful for Lagoa do Fogo outside the excursions. Outside the June to September window, there is no set time slot for private vehicles: the weather decides. So keep a spare day for the lake, and don’t count on the clouds clearing at a set hour.
Finally, pack layers and a light waterproof jacket. Temperatures stay mild, but rain is heaviest in December and January. A dry bag, which some excursions already provide, keeps your phone and papers safe.
Frequently asked questions
Which tour is the best rated from Ponta Delgada?
The highest rating goes to the canyoning in Ribeira Grande, at 4.99 from 984 reviews. Among the full-day tours, the east tour with Furnas and Nordeste has 4.96 from 1,331 reviews, and the west tour 4.95 from 1,828 reviews. These ratings were checked on November 2, 2026 and may change. For a first day, the west tour is the most complete. See the east tour.
Do I need to rent a car for these excursions?
No, not for the excursions. Five of them include pickup in Ponta Delgada or Lagoa, and the others have a precise meeting point or one shared at booking. A car becomes useful if you want to go to Lagoa do Fogo on your own, outside an excursion. Private vehicle access is restricted only from June 1 to September 30, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The airport is about ten minutes from the center.
How many days do I need for this selection?
Two days cover the essentials, and a half-day of quad or canyoning fits in easily. A third day can host the Furnas evening or the walking food tour of Ponta Delgada, so you do not have to string together three full days. The order of the days is detailed in the practical tips.
What do I do when it rains?
The detailed rain plan is in the practical tips, in the second tip. In short, the Furnas excursions, the walking food tour and the private 4×4 tour remain doable in damp weather. The kayak and the boat depend on the sea: schedule them with a spare day.
Why are some availability numbers so low?
Over the window checked, the canyoning in Ribeira Grande is open on 20 days out of 60, all between December 2 and 31. The walking food tour is open on 25 days, all falling between November 16 and December 19. The boat trip is open on 15 days, all between November 16 and 30. The kayak is open on 35 days, all falling between November 17 and January 14. These counts are a snapshot of the November 2, 2026 check and may change. If one of these experiences matters to you, book early, then check availability again when you finalize your booking.
What should I prepare for canyoning?
The provider asks you to share your height, weight and shoe size before booking, so the wetsuit, neoprene socks and boots can be prepared. The helmet and harness are provided, with an experienced guide. The meeting point is at the Caldeiras de Ribeira Grande, at Largo das Calderas. The outing lasts two and a half hours and depends on conditions on the day.
