The Chichibu Night Festival 2026 runs on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December 2026 in Chichibu, about 77 minutes from Ikebukuro by Laview. The 2nd is the eve, the 3rd the main day, with six floats. The city has not yet published the 2026 timetables for the processions or the fireworks.
Checked on against the official sources cited (City of Chichibu, Seibu Railway, Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Every early December, the small town of Chichibu, in Saitama Prefecture, hosts one of Japan’s major float festivals. The Chichibu Night Festival (Chichibu Yomatsuri, 秩父夜祭) runs after dark around Chichibu Shrine, with floats pulled by neighbourhood crews and music that goes with every procession. This article draws on the announcements published in October 2026.
1. The Chichibu Night Festival at a glance

A night festival carried by its floats
The Japanese name, 秩父夜祭, means « Chichibu night festival ». The festival is really about its floats, the yatai, and the music that goes with them. It takes place around Chichibu Shrine, in the town of the same name, at the foot of the Chichibu mountains. The city’s official festival page lists six floats.
The festival lasts two days. Wednesday 2 December 2026 is the eve, called yoimiya (宵宮). Thursday 3 December 2026 is the main festival, taisai (大祭): the day of the big processions and the fireworks, whose 2026 times have not been published yet. Both dates appear in the city of Chichibu notice, updated on 13 October 2026, and Seibu Railway confirms them in its statement of 28 October 2026.
English Wikipedia says the festival has been held for more than 300 years. No official source we checked confirms that age.
On 2 December, the eve, guides describe a lively evening that is calmer than the 3rd.
2. Six floats, neighbourhood crews and continuous music

Kasaboko and yatai: two kinds of float
The City of Chichibu describes six floats: two kasaboko (笠鉾), floats with a conical roof topped by an ornament, and four yatai (屋台), multi-storey floats. Guides sometimes call them mobile « stages ». Each float is looked after by the residents of one of the town’s districts (町), who take part in every procession.
Depending on the float, they weigh between 10 and 20 tonnes, according to the national guide on japan.travel.
The hayashi music
Hayashi, a traditional ensemble of flutes and percussion, accompanies the floats.
- Six floats: two kasaboko and four yatai
- One neighbourhood crew per float
- Hayashi music during the processions
- 2025 reference: the floats climb the Danzaka slope on the evening of 3 December (the city has not yet detailed the 2026 programme)
3. Recognised in 1979 and 2016
A national designation, then an international listing
On 3 February 1979, the Agency for Cultural Affairs designated the Chichibu yatai festival and the kagura as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties. In 2016, UNESCO added the festivals of floats, hoko and yatai to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. According to the Agency’s record, these are two separate steps, and the record gives only the year 2016. Guides that cite « December 2016 » go further than the source.
Two vocabulary traps. The Agency’s file also mentions kagura performances linked to the festival, which do not take place on the festival dates. And the Matsuri Kaikan museum, whose site is chichibu-matsuri.jp, is a museum: it is not the official festival website.
4. The 2026 calendar: what is confirmed

What the city has published for 2026
The City of Chichibu notice, updated on 13 October 2026, confirms both evenings: Wednesday 2 December for the eve and Thursday 3 December for the main festival. Seibu Railway confirms both dates in its statement of 28 October 2026.
The same notice announces details still to come: procession times, the float programme, the fireworks, and traffic and parking restrictions. On 2 November 2026, the date we checked, no newer version had been published.
The table below therefore uses the 2025 timings. They show roughly what to expect, not a programme. Use them to set your expectations, then check the city notice once it is complete.
| Element | 2026 (official) | 2025 (reference, indicative) |
|---|---|---|
| Eve (宵宮) | Wednesday 2 December | Tuesday 2 December |

5. Getting from Tokyo: the Laview, special trains and fares
The Laview from Ikebukuro, the simplest option
The Laview « CHICHIBU » runs from Ikebukuro to Seibu-Chichibu in about 77 minutes. The adult fare checked in July 2026 by Ekitan is 1,700 yen. All seats are reserved, and the train runs more than ten return trips a day, according to the same source.
From Seibu-Chichibu, the town centre is about 15 minutes on foot. Chichibu station, served by the Chichibu Railway, is about 5 minutes on foot from the centre, according to the guides we consulted.
3 December: extra trains
Seibu Railway announces extra limited express trains from Ikebukuro on 3 December 2026, starting from the 11:00 am slot and running about every 30 minutes. For this service, the limit is 8 tickets per person. Sales open on 3 November 2026, a public holiday in Japan.
On 2 December, Seibu also changes one train to Seibu-Chichibu so that it starts at Seibu-Chichibu, with a special timetable between Hanno and Seibu-Chichibu. Check the exact timetable on Seibu’s website before you book, because the announcement does not give a full table.
The JR Pass is not enough
The Japan Rail Pass does not cover the Seibu lines, which are private railways. A route combining JR via Kumagaya and then the Chichibu Railway is described by a travel site, but its fare has not been confirmed on any official JR or Chichibu Railway page. Don’t count it in your budget without checking first.
| Option | Adult fare | Journey time | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laview from Ikebukuro | 1,700 yen (checked July 2026) | about 77 min | reserved seats, more than 10 return trips a day |
| Ordinary train with a change at Hanno | not checked against an official site | about 2 h according to guides | not stated |
| Special 3 December train (Seibu) | not stated in the announcement | from Ikebukuro, departures about every 30 min from 11:00 am | 8 tickets per person at most, sales from 3 November 2026 |

6. Tickets, seats and 2026 offers
Entry, seats and buses
Guides describe the processions as free to watch. The city has not confirmed this explicitly in the notice we checked. Seated viewing places on the stalls, called 屋台観覧席, are paid: a 2025 guide gives 3,000 yen. We have not found them on sale for 2026.
The city announces a THE ALFEE bus for 2026, leaving on 3 December, at 29,800 yen. According to the announcement of 26 October 2026, the offer includes seats for the fireworks. It is a separate product tied to a concert, not a requirement to see the festival.
A 1,000 yen commemorative ticket is on sale from 1 December 2026 to 11 January 2027, according to the city. It is also tied to the music event and does not give access to the festival.
| Offer | Price | Date | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stall viewing seat 屋台観覧席 | 3,000 yen | 2025 (2026 sales not found) | figure from a guide, to be confirmed |
| THE ALFEE bus | 29,800 yen | departs 3 December 2026 | includes seats for the fireworks |
| Commemorative ticket | 1,000 yen | 1 December 2026 to 11 January 2027 | tied to a concert, not the festival |
| Japan departure tax | 3,000 yen | since 1 July 2026 | adds to your trip budget, not to the festival |

7. Fireworks, crowds and the Danzaka slope
The fireworks: 2025 reference points
According to 2025 sources, the fireworks are launched from Hitsujiyama Park (羊山公園). On 2 December 2025, the launch started around 7:00 pm and lasted about an hour. On 3 December, it began around 7:30 pm. Durations and shell counts vary between sources, so we quote neither a shell count nor a duration for 3 December.
To watch the fireworks, Seibu recommended the car park of Chichibu City Hall and the area around Seibu-Chichibu station in 2025. These are 2025 reference points: the 2026 programme is not published.
Crowds: 3 December is the busiest
2 December is described as calmer, a lively evening. 3 December draws the biggest crowds, especially from 5:00 pm according to guides, around the Danzaka slope and the fireworks spots.
For 3 December, the city notice announces traffic restrictions, but the map and temporary parking have not been published. Several sources recommend park-and-ride: parking on the outskirts and taking the train in. We advise against driving that day, and point you to the city’s map once it is out.
Trains are packed once the festival ends: leave a buffer around the Laview or the special train you choose.
8. Budget, accommodation, weather and entry formalities
Indicative budget
A guide estimates 8,000 to 12,000 yen for a full day in Chichibu, return trip and meals included, for a budget traveller. It is a guide’s estimate, not an official figure.
Leaving Japan has also got more expensive recently. The departure tax rose from 1,000 to 3,000 yen on 1 July 2026, according to the JNTO. It adds to the cost of your trip, not to the price of the festival: about €16 for 3,000 yen at the June 2026 rate (to be updated).
Accommodation: book early
Accommodation in Chichibu is limited, according to the guides we consulted, who advise booking several months ahead. We found no official data on availability for the nights of 2 and 3 December 2026. If you cannot find a room in Chichibu, a stay in a nearby town means planning the trip back after the festival.
Weather: expect cold
Climate normals for 1991 to 2020 give an average December temperature of 4.0 °C in Chichibu, with an average high of 11.2 °C and an average low of -1.6 °C, according to time-j.net. Rainfall figures differ a lot between sites, so we do not quote them. We found no official rule for cancelling the festival in bad weather.
Entry formalities
This article does not set out the entry rules for UK passport holders. Check the entry requirements section of the FCDO’s Japan travel advice before you book.
9. Usage rules and tips from the ground
Drones and filming
Seibu Railway’s festival page bans drones and filming. That page reflects the 2025 edition, and no 2026 rule has been published. The text does not say whether handheld video is covered, so treat it as covered and follow the staff on site.
Tripods and photos
We found no official rule on tripods. Check on the spot, because many Japanese religious sites restrict them. Never block a passage to take a photo.
Follow the staff
Spectators follow the instructions of the float crews and the police. On a busy route, they decide which areas stay open. A closed route is not up for debate: take another path, even if the view looks better somewhere else.
10. Depending on your travel style
First trip to Japan
The Chichibu Night Festival suits a first trip to Japan well: one destination, a direct train and a festival that is easy to follow. Spend 2 December getting a feel for the town, then 3 December for the processions. If you are also passing through Tokyo, see our guide to Autumn Foliage in Tokyo 2026: Dates and Illuminations. If you are staying on into the New Year, see also Japan New Year 2027: What Closes and What to Do.
Tight budget
The Laview costs 1,700 yen. Guides present the ordinary train with a change at Hanno as cheaper but slower (about two hours), with no verified official fare.
Couple or friends
For two people, compare the cost of a day on site (a guide’s estimate: 8,000 to 12,000 yen per person, not official) with the cost of the return trip. On 3 December, the crowd slows every journey. One guide argues against arriving early for the peak of the night, since the Danzaka slope is closed to the public. That is an opinion, and we have not checked it.
Families and reduced mobility
3 December concentrates the crowd in the centre. We found no official accessibility information for wheelchair users or pushchairs in the sources we checked. Ask the city before you go.
What other guides don’t tell you
Four points are missing from the guides we checked, or appear in them without a date. Each one links to an official source, checked on 2 November 2026.
- The departure tax has been 3,000 yen since 1 July 2026. Several guides still quote 1,000 yen. The JNTO announced the rise in a publication of 11 May 2026 (japan.travel, checked on 2 November 2026).
- The 3 December special trains have a limit. Seibu announces limited express trains from 11:00 am, about every 30 minutes, with 8 tickets per person at most, on sale from 3 November 2026 (Seibu Railway statement, 28 October 2026, checked on 2 November 2026).
- The heritage status is more precise than guides suggest. National designation on 3 February 1979, and UNESCO listing in 2016 for the festivals of floats, hoko and yatai. Guides often just say « UNESCO heritage » (Agency for Cultural Affairs record 203403, checked on 2 November 2026).
- The 2026 timetables are not published. The city points to a future update for the processions, the fireworks and the traffic. Some guide pages still show 2026 times that repeat the 2025 ones (City of Chichibu notice, 13 October 2026, checked on 2 November 2026).
