New Year’s Eve at Times Square takes place overnight, from December 31, 2026 to January 1, 2027. Under the 2025-26 rules, the public space is free and needs no ticket, first come, first served. The 2026 rules had not been published as of November 4, 2026, so the 2025-26 rules serve as the reference.

Checked on against the official sources cited. Rules taken from the 2025-26 edition: MTA notice of December 31, 2025, and the Alliance FAQ.

For New Year’s Eve 2026, you need to separate what is confirmed from what isn’t. No 2026 rules have been published yet. This guide therefore uses the 2025-26 rules as the reference, flags the edition each time, and separates the date, the announced webcast and the ball (confirmed) from the zones, banned items, descent timing and fireworks (not confirmed).

The public space on New Year’s Eve night

Free (2025-26 rule) Zones open at 3 p.m. (2025-26) December 31, midnight No re-entry (2025-26)

The public space at Times Square can’t be reserved. Under the 2025-26 rule, it is open to everyone, requires no ticket, and fills up on a first-come, first-served basis. The Alliance, which runs the event, says there is no ticket and no « pass » for moving between several venues (Alliance FAQ). Some guides mention « VIP passes » for the street: none of them matches an offer the Alliance has listed.

The flip side of that free access is the restrictions. Once you’re inside a zone, you stay there: under the same 2025-26 rule, leaving the enclosure forfeits your spot, and re-entry is refused. For December 31, 2026, the reference text is still the 2025-26 edition, as reported by New York media, because the organizer hasn’t published this year’s rules yet.

If you’d rather not spend the evening holding a spot, the day can be spent on the water instead. The 90-minute cruise below passes the Statue of Liberty, the bridges and the Manhattan skyline. It does not give access to the ball. The departure dates we found are December 31, 2026 and January 1, 2027.

Pixidia tip: under the 2025-26 list, everyone is searched before entry. Arrive with as small a bag as possible: the check takes time.

What is confirmed for 2026, and what isn’t

Three things are established by official sources or calendars: the date of New Year’s Eve, the webcast announced by the organizer, and the ball in place. Everything else (access points, zone hours, the list of items, the number of police officers, the music lineup and the fireworks) has not been published yet.

The date rests on both the calendar and the Alliance’s announcement: the night opens on Thursday, December 31, 2026, and the ball is due to drop at midnight, New York time (Alliance webcast page). The ball, as described by the organizer, measures 12.5 feet, weighs 12,350 pounds and carries 5,280 Waterford crystals (history of the ball, Alliance).

The 2026 rules had not been published as of November 4, 2026, and no date has been announced for their release. The table below therefore puts the rules of past editions side by side with what is known for 2026. It shows no 2026 times: at this point, that would be false precision.

Access and hours: the 2025-26 reference points

Where to enter, and when

According to the NYPD briefing relayed by NY1 on December 30, 2025, the viewing zones ran between 6th and 8th Avenues, at 45th, 49th, 52nd and 56th Streets. They opened to the public at 3 p.m. From opening until midnight, the time is spent in a security line, then on site, where mobile teams move through the pens for a secondary search.

These are last year’s reference points. They give an order of magnitude, not a guarantee: a 2026 rule could change an access point or a time. That is why each line is dated « 2025-26 ».

Key point: opening at 3 p.m. doesn’t mean there will be room at 3 p.m. Guides advise arriving earlier. That’s a guide’s tip, not an official rule.

The Alliance’s announced webcast runs from 6 p.m. on December 31 to 12:15 a.m. on January 1. This is a time announced for 2026, not a rule from the 2025-26 edition, so it does not appear in the table above.

Bags and items: a list that has been around since 2017

The same families of items have appeared in NYPD announcements since 2017: backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, folding chairs and alcohol. In 2018, lawn chairs were added to the list (NYPD press release, 2018). The 2025-26 list goes into more detail and also covers picnic blankets, large coolers, drones, weapons and bulky objects.

Here are the main items that were banned at the entrance to the public space at the last known edition:

  • Backpacks and large bags
  • Umbrellas, folding or lawn chairs, picnic blankets
  • Large coolers and bulky objects
  • Alcohol, drones and weapons

Under the 2025-26 rule, everyone is searched: spectators, but also the employees and guests of the buildings. The search takes place at the barrier and, inside the pens, by mobile teams who scan the crowd (NY1, December 30, 2025). A small bag therefore gets through faster than a large one, and a pouch with nothing prohibited faster still.

For rain, an undated travel guide suggests bringing a poncho rather than an umbrella. No official statement we read backs this up: treat it as a lead, and check with the Alliance before you travel.

Tickets and private parties: what costs money

Under the 2025-26 rule, the public space requires no ticket. What does cost money: private parties in hotels and neighborhood venues, views from high buildings, and shows. The table below gives indicative prices, to be confirmed on each site before any purchase.

Sources: Alliance, private parties, Empire State Building, Rockettes press release and third-party guides, checked November 4, 2026.

Private parties are priced very differently. Third-party listings, with no year given, show a penthouse at $159 and a rooftop from $145. These prices may change; they are not guaranteed rates. Getting into party venues inside the barricaded perimeter requires a printed ticket, according to a hotel listing that should be confirmed with the venue.

Be wary of « street tickets » sold by middlemen. In October 2025, the New York State Department of State issued a general warning about event ticket scams. It recommends checking that the name, date and time on a ticket match the official announcement (NY Department of State).

The ball: 1907, 12,350 pounds and a 60-second descent

The New Year’s Eve celebration dates back to 1904, and the first ball dates from 1907: 5 feet across and 700 pounds. The ball in place now, according to the Alliance, measures 12.5 feet and weighs 12,350 pounds. Guides often write « more than 12,000 pounds » or « 12 tons »: stick with the official figure, which comes from the organizer (history of the ball, Alliance).

The descent begins at 11:59 p.m. and lasts 60 seconds, according to the 2025 edition rule published in the Alliance FAQ. The ball touches down at midnight. The exact timing of the 2026 descent has not been published yet: check the Alliance site once it is.

The press announced a second ball drop in July 2026, for the America250 celebrations. No statement we read settles whether it falls on July 3 or July 4. We don’t treat that drop as established, and it changes nothing about New Year’s Eve on December 31.

If the crowd isn’t for you: fireworks, concerts and views

Central Park and Prospect Park: free fireworks

Central Park remains the largest free option. Last year, the fireworks were launched from Bow Bridge and Cherry Hill, as part of the Midnight Run start, between 71st and 74th Streets according to CBS (CBS New York, 2026 fireworks). For 2026, no NYC Parks announcement had been published as of November 4: the program is not confirmed and depends on the weather.

Prospect Park offered a show from Grand Army Plaza in 2025-26: a concert starting at 10 p.m., fireworks at midnight, and free entry by reservation (RSVP). Sources disagree on the launch point, Grand Army Plaza or Long Meadow. The park’s official page could not be consulted: this information comes from search results. The park has not confirmed its 2026 program, and a show like this can be cancelled. Headlines we did not read in full mention cancelled fireworks, including a News 12 Brooklyn headline about drought and a 2024 Time Out headline.

Pixidia tip: fireworks depend on the weather, and last year it was raining at Times Square. Plan a fallback, such as an evening in a covered venue nearby.

The fake Brooklyn Bridge fireworks

At the end of 2025, thousands of people gathered along the Brooklyn Waterfront and on the bridge because of social media posts announcing a show that had not been planned. According to the press, no official fireworks were authorized at that spot at the end of 2025 (Travel and Tour World, January 2, 2026). That source is weak, and no NYC Parks statement we read confirms or denies it for 2026. Don’t rely on an announcement that doesn’t come from the Alliance, NYC Parks or the police.

If you want a paid experience rather than a public spot, our guide New Year’s Eve 2026 in New York: 8 experiences to book covers options outside the zones. To compare with other cities, New Year 2027: the 10 best spots to ring in the new year covers several destinations.

Subway and exits: avoid Times Sq-42 St

In 2025-26, December 31 (a Wednesday) ran on a regular weekday schedule according to the MTA. December 31, 2026 is a Thursday, and the MTA has not published a service plan for that date. Three points mattered in 2025-26: the street exits of the Times Sq-42 St station were closed; passage between Times Sq-42 St and 42 St-Bryant Park was open in one direction only, from 2 p.m.; and trains skipped 50 St, 49 St and 57 St-7 Av between 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 a.m.

On the way back, the zones close at the same time as the streets. You need to walk to a station outside the zone, rather than Times Sq-42 St, whose exits were closed. Some guides recommend 49 St, 50 St or 57 St. According to the MTA’s 2025-26 schedule, those stations were not served between 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 a.m., so this advice only applies after 12:15 a.m., once the descent is over. It is a guide’s tip, not an official one.

Night service was reinforced in 2025-26: a 42 St shuttle ran all night, and the A express continued until about 2:30 a.m. (MTA, 2025-26 edition). These hours need to be reconfirmed for 2026.

Following the celebration without being there

The Alliance announces a free webcast from 6 p.m. on December 31 to 12:15 a.m. on January 1: that is a time announced for 2026. It will be available on TimesSquareNYC.org, NewYearsEve.nyc, TimesSquareBall.net and BallDropsHere.com, as well as on YouTube, Facebook Live and X. A livestream with closed captions and American Sign Language interpretation is due to be published in December 2026.

On television, ABC airs its annual show Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. The press announces the next version on ABC and Disney+, but we did not check that page when writing: confirm the schedule with the channel before settling in front of the screen.

Restrooms, food and weather

Under the 2025-26 rule, there are no portable toilets in the viewing zones (Alliance FAQ). There are no licensed food vendors either, and alcohol is banned. No 2026 New Year’s Eve menu has been reported: check directly with the venue.

For the weather, no reliable forecast could be established for December 31. The available readings for Central Park contradict each other, and the official reading could not be checked. On December 31, 2025, the night was rainy and cold, with about a million people according to media estimates.

What other guides don’t tell you

These five points come from official or dated sources. They are missing from the guides we read, or appear in them in an inaccurate form.

  • There is no multi-venue pass. According to the Alliance FAQ (2025-26 rule), there is no multi-venue pass and no « all-access » pass for the public space, which is free and requires no ticket (Alliance FAQ, checked November 4, 2026).
  • No portable toilets are provided in the zones. Several guides offer tips for finding restrooms on site. The Alliance FAQ, 2025-26 edition, states there are none in the zones (Alliance FAQ, checked November 4, 2026).
  • No official fireworks at Brooklyn Bridge, according to the press. One travel guide listed Brooklyn Bridge Park as a fireworks location. According to the press, no official fireworks were authorized there at the end of 2025 (Travel and Tour World, January 2, 2026, checked November 4, 2026). Weak source.
  • Zones opened at 3 p.m., not noon or 2 p.m. Several guides give noon or 2 p.m.; the rule reported for the 2025-26 edition is 3 p.m. (NY1, December 30, 2025, checked November 4, 2026).
  • The Times Sq-42 St street exits were closed in 2025-26. The MTA announced these exits closed for that edition, although several guides recommend this station (MTA, December 31, 2025, checked November 4, 2026).

Before you go: three checks

The 2026 rules

They had not been published as of November 4, 2026, and no date has been announced for their release. Check the Alliance page (timessquarenyc.org/nye) before you leave, then the MTA service page.

New York time

The celebration runs on New York time, UTC-5 in winter. Midnight in New York is 9 p.m. on December 31 in Los Angeles, and 11 p.m. in Chicago.

Clothing and walking

Wear comfortable shoes and clothes suited to cold and rain: last year the night was rainy. If you hold a spot, you’ll be standing for hours.

Frequently asked questions about New Year’s Eve at Times Square

Do you need a ticket for Times Square on December 31?

No, not for the public space. Under the 2025-26 rule and the Alliance FAQ, it is free and open on a first-come basis. Private parties in hotels and neighborhood venues are paid, and some require a printed ticket to enter the barricaded perimeter. Beware of middlemen selling « street tickets » or multi-venue passes: the organizer offers none.

What time should you arrive?

The viewing zones opened to the public at 3 p.m. in the 2025-26 edition, according to NY1 and CBS. Arriving earlier, sometimes from noon, is a guide’s tip: it doesn’t guarantee a spot, but it leaves time to get through the bag check. The 2026 times have not been published yet, so confirm the zone time on the Alliance site once it is.

Which bags are banned?

The 2025-26 list includes backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, folding or camping chairs, picnic blankets, large coolers, alcohol, drones, weapons and bulky objects. Under the 2025-26 rule, everyone is searched before entry. A small bag shortens the search: that’s a practical tip, not an official rule.

Can you leave the zone and come back in?

No. Under the 2025-26 rule (Alliance FAQ), leaving the zone forfeits your spot, and re-entry is refused. Before you settle in, make sure you have what you need to last until midnight, since there are no portable toilets or licensed food vendors in the zones.

Are there toilets in the zones?

No, under the 2025-26 rule: the Alliance FAQ says no portable toilets are installed in the viewing zones. Online tips, such as using the Penn Station restrooms before joining a zone, are traveler advice, not official guidance. Limit what you drink before you go in.

What time does the ball drop?

The ball drops at midnight on January 1. For the 2025 edition, the descent lasted 60 seconds and began at 11:59 p.m., according to the Alliance FAQ (2025-26 rule). For 2026, the organizer announces a drop at midnight and a webcast from 6 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. The exact timing of the 2026 descent has not been published yet.

Can you watch the celebration live without being there?

Yes. The Alliance announces a free webcast from 6 p.m. on December 31 to 12:15 a.m. on January 1, on TimesSquareNYC.org, NewYearsEve.nyc, TimesSquareBall.net, BallDropsHere.com, YouTube, Facebook Live and X. ABC also airs its New Year’s Eve show on American television, and the press announces the next version.

What are the 2026 rules for Times Square?

The 2026 rules had not been published when this was written, on November 4, 2026, and no date has been announced for their release. The 2025-26 edition rules, published by the Alliance and reported in the press, serve as the reference: check access points, times and the list of banned items as soon as they are published.

Where can you see free fireworks on December 31 in New York?

Central Park and Prospect Park have held free shows in past editions. At Central Park, the fireworks were launched from Bow Bridge and Cherry Hill last year, but the 2026 program had not been published as of November 4. Prospect Park offered a concert from 10 p.m. and fireworks at midnight in 2025-26, with free reservations; the park has not confirmed its 2026 program, so check the Prospect Park site before you go. In both cases, the weather decides how the night unfolds.

How much does a private party at Times Square cost?

The Alliance’s party page lists prices from $79 to $3,500 and up, depending on the package, with labels that mix several editions. Third-party listings, with no year given, also show a penthouse at $159 or a rooftop from $145. Check prices with the organizer or the venue before any purchase.
