A private tour from Sorrento costs €225 to €1,025 per adult for two travelers. Of the 8 tours selected, five stay open on all 60 dates tested, from November to January; the other three open on 41 to 59 dates. For the sea, choose a private boat; for the road, the minivan with a guide.
Verified on through the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).
When you arrive in Sorrento in November, the first question is not « what should I see? » but « how do I see the coast without spending the day in a crowded bus? » I went through the Viator listings checked for dates between November 21, 2026 and January 19, 2027 to answer that question directly: private tours departing from Sorrento, by boat or by vehicle, with availability verified date by date.
This guide starts from Sorrento. Several tours also offer a departure from Naples or Salerno, flagged each time; the article focuses on the coast itself, namely Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and Capri. The best entry point is the private boat tour to Capri, local gems and Prosecco, first in the selection: 787 reviews, a 4.97 rating, and 60 dates open out of 60.
The format changes everything. On a boat, only your group comes aboard, you move at your own pace, and the sea offers views no road can give. By vehicle, you stop at the viewpoints at your own pace, and you can start from Naples or Salerno depending on the tour. This guide helps you choose between the two, avoid price traps (port fees, tips, admission tickets) and anticipate winter, which reduces part of the offer.
Each tour below shows the price per adult for two travelers, the duration, the rating and the share of dates available over the window. These figures come from the check of November 7, 2026. They can change; the date you want still has to be confirmed when you book.
Why start from Sorrento for the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, as a cultural landscape covering fifteen municipalities.
Sorrento is the logical starting point for three reasons. It sits at the entrance to the coast, close to Positano. It gives access to the boats that head for Capri, the island facing the gulf. And it has a public transport option: the SITA bus links Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi, while the ferry only runs in summer, from April to October, according to positano.com. In November, you count on the bus or on a private vehicle.
Season matters more than distance. Bluekeys, a boat rental company in Amalfi, places the best season for boats between May and October. Sorrento Insider, a local news site, gives a high season from April to October and says there is no boat transfer from November to March. That outlet is not authoritative on this point: for the dates tested, Viator availability is what counts, and you must confirm the date and the departure point with the supplier before paying. The tours in this selection were checked over the window from November 21, 2026 to January 19, 2027. Twenty-one candidate tours are closed on the five winter dates tested, including at least nine private excursions: make sure your date is among the open dates on the tour page.
What makes the difference between excursions is the travel profile. For a couple who wants the sea, private boats of 26 to 38 feet are the right answer, with the gozzo for a longer day. For a family with children, vehicle formats are more flexible: you stop when you want. For a small budget, the two most affordable vehicles in the selection, at €225 and €285 per adult, remain the best starting point. And for a first visit to the coast, a tour covering Positano, Amalfi and Ravello is better than an improvised departure for a single island.
A note for travelers with reduced mobility: the coast is made of steps, narrow lanes and boarding from pontoons. A private vehicle with hotel pickup reduces the effort, but none of the tours in this selection describes accessibility at boarding. Ask the supplier before booking.

The 8 private tours from Sorrento, tour by tour

1. Capri by private boat, Prosecco on board
If you only keep one boat tour to Capri from Sorrento, make it this one. It is a private boat: only your group comes aboard, and the day unfolds at your pace between the coves, with no unknown passengers. With 787 reviews and a 4.97 rating, it is one of the most reviewed tours in the selection. On board you will find towels, water, soft drinks and toilets, and Prosecco is part of the package. The catch is the price. The €1,250 for two travelers does not include fuel or mooring: from Positano, count €200 for fuel and €75 for mooring; from Capri, €200 for fuel and €100 for mooring, paid in cash on site; from the Cassano marina, €50 for mooring. Ask for the total of the departure point you choose before you confirm. Because the tour is open on all 60 dates tested, you can pick the day that suits you and keep a spare day in case of bad weather.
- Private boat for your group only
- Prosecco, water and soft drinks on board
- Fuel and mooring to budget on top

2. Capri with a skipper, snorkeling included
This is the least expensive private boat to Capri in the selection, with a 4.99 rating from 198 reviews. The tour uses a 26- or 38-foot boat depending on the option you choose, which changes comfort on board a lot. Depending on the option, departure is from Sorrento (38-foot boat, from the Lobra marina in Massa Lubrense or from Marina di Cassano), from Positano or from Amalfi: the supplier confirms the exact point after booking, so the location is not fixed when you pay. The skipper, Wi-Fi and snorkeling gear are on board, which matters if you want to swim in the coves. The listing puts the Blue Grotto among admission fees rather than among inclusions. The Capri landing tax is optional, and tips are extra. I recommend it to anyone who wants a private boat without paying top price and who accepts learning the departure point at confirmation.
- Skipper and Wi-Fi on board
- Snorkeling gear provided
- Capri tax optional, tips extra

3. Departure from Sorrento at 10 a.m., Capri and Anacapri
Departure is fixed at 10 a.m. in front of Bar Ruccio, on the stone quay of Marina Piccola on the Sorrento coast, and that is what sets this tour apart. The 33- or 38-foot boat carries only your group, for a fixed duration of seven hours. The route passes the Piazzetta of Capri, with a stop at Marina Grande, then a stroll in Anacapri. On board, snacks, a limoncello tasting, beer, beach towels and a snorkel mask are included, which cuts your spending on site. The listing specifies that the Blue Grotto is paid in cash at the entrance. The price is €1,600 for two travelers, or €800 per adult: one of the highest rates in the selection, and it should be weighed against what is included. For a tighter budget, tour 2 offers a €375 per adult formula, also departing from Sorrento. A boarding option exists at Porto Marina d’Equa, in Vico Equense: ask which one you get before paying.
- Departure from Sorrento, Marina Piccola, 10 a.m.
- Snacks, limoncello and snorkel mask
- Fixed duration of seven hours

4. Amalfi Coast on a private gozzo
This traditional gozzo boat is reserved for your group, with a professional English-speaking skipper. At 8 hours and 15 minutes on board, it is the longest duration in the selection, and departure is from Sorrento only, with hotel pickup and return. Drinks (water, beer, wine, Prosecco, limoncello), snacks, a sweet treat, towels and toilets are on board. Freediving equipment is not included: budget €15 for the mask and €9 for the snorkel if you want to swim. Mind the availability: the tour is open only 41 days out of 60, and its dates stop on December 31, 2026, with no January 2027 date at all. Check your date one by one. The price is €950 for two travelers, or €475 per adult.
- Gozzo reserved for your group
- Drinks, snacks and towels on board
- Freediving gear not included

5. 36-foot boat, departure from Sorrento, Naples or Positano
This 36-foot boat is the most expensive tour in the selection on a per-adult basis. It is the only tour in the selection to offer Sorrento, Naples and Positano as departure points, according to the data we checked: for travelers arriving from Naples or who want to leave from Positano, that is a concrete advantage. Pickup in Sorrento is at your hotel. The rating is 5.0, but from only 103 reviews: a small sample, to be read as such. The tour includes alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, snacks, bottled water and fuel, with a professional English-speaking skipper. Tips are extra, with no amount given; the total is €2,050 for two travelers. Choose this tour for the freedom of the departure point and the comfort on board, not for the price.
- Three departure points: Sorrento, Naples, Positano
- Alcoholic drinks and snacks included
- Tips extra

6. Private van tour of the coast, Ravello included
When the sea is not the focus, this is the most solid road tour in the selection: 1,233 reviews, the highest volume in the selection, and a 4.99 rating. The vehicle is air-conditioned, the driver speaks English, and the tour stops in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Tolls, parking, fuel and taxes are included, which keeps the budget simple. Lunch and admission tickets are not included, so plan for them. Pickup is at your hotel in Sorrento, or in Naples if you leave from the capital. The price is €688 for two travelers, or €344 per adult. The tour is open only 56 days out of 60: it is not offered on December 24 and 25, nor on December 31 and January 1. Confirm your date. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure, but the listing specifies that bad weather is not covered by this cancellation policy.
- Air-conditioned vehicle, tolls and parking included
- Stops in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello
- Lunch and admissions not included

7. Private minibus from Sorrento, Naples or Salerno
The private minibus is a proven format on the coast: this listing has 908 reviews, 329 of them on Viator, which makes it one of the most reviewed in the selection. Three departure cities are offered, Sorrento, Naples and Salerno, depending on the option. The route passes Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, with a stop on the coastal road for the view over Amalfi. The price is €569.88 for two travelers, or €284.94 per adult. The listing mentions a driver, without promising a lecturing guide: if you want commentary on history or art, ask the supplier before booking, or choose tour 8, which has a guide in person. Lunch and tips are not included. This is the format that combines a small budget with the comfort of a private vehicle.
- Air-conditioned minibus, bottled water
- Pickup in Sorrento, Naples or Salerno
- Driver on board, no guide promised

8. Luxury minivan with a guide in person
This is the least expensive of the eight, at €225 per adult for two travelers, and it has one clear advantage: a guide in person, who speaks English, Spanish or Italian. The minivan is a luxury, air-conditioned model, with water, Wi-Fi and soft drinks on board. Parking fees are included. No exclusion appears in the data we checked; the departure point is communicated by the supplier after booking, so plan a transfer if you stay far from central Sorrento. It is open 59 days out of 60: only December 12, 2026 is closed. A very good choice for a first contact with the coast, provided you prefer commented stops to the freedom of the sea.
- Guide in person (English, Spanish, Italian)
- Luxury air-conditioned minivan, Wi-Fi on board
- Parking included, departure point confirmed after booking
Planning the trip
Between Sorrento and Positano, the SITA bus is the simplest option outside peak season. The timetable published on positano.com lists 21 departures between 6:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., with a 24-hour ticket at €10. The page does not state how long its timetable is valid: check the times before you leave. The ferry runs from April to October, and 2026 schedules are not published on the page.
Boats are mostly rented from May to October, according to Bluekeys, an Amalfi rental company. Sorrento Insider, a local news site, says there is no boat transfer from November to March: that outlet is not authoritative, and for the dates tested Viator availability is what counts. For summer, the tours were tested on May 15, June 15, July 15 and September 15, 2027: each is open with at least one option on those four dates, which does not prove it is open all season. The private tours in this selection remain open over the winter window; the closed candidate tours were dropped.
The price shown for a tour is not the total cost of your day. Fuel, mooring, the Capri landing tax, tips, lunch and admissions are added depending on the format. Note them before comparing two excursions.
Practical tips on site
The first tip concerns the order of your day. On a boat, the sea decides: tour 3 sets its departure at 10 a.m. and lasts seven hours, which leaves time to see Capri without rushing. In any case, keep a spare day in your stay. Cancellation for bad weather is provided on tours 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5; it is not provided on tours 6, 7 and 8. Read the clause of your tour before you pay.
The Blue Grotto deserves a note. Access depends on the tide and the sea, and swimming is forbidden there, according to the online encyclopedia used as a reference here. So do not build your day around a specific slot inside the grotto. Two tours mention it: tour 2 lists it among admission fees, and tour 3 specifies it is paid in cash at the entrance. Neither includes the ticket. The descriptions we checked are truncated, so verify the details on the tour page. Also bring some cash: tour 1 requires payment in cash for mooring in Capri.
Three profiles stand out when choosing a format. A couple who wants the sea will opt for a private boat: tour 2 is the least expensive boat in the selection, and tour 3 is the one leaving Sorrento at 10 a.m. A family with children will prefer vehicles: tour 6 for its stops in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, tour 8 for the guide in person. For a traveler with reduced mobility, a vehicle with hotel pickup can limit the steps; ask the supplier how boarding works before you book a boat.
Four mistakes come up repeatedly. The first is comparing a small-group rate with a private rate without checking the option booked. The second is forgetting the fuel and mooring supplements on boats. The third is booking a partly available tour with no backup date: tours 4, 6 and 8 are not open every day of the window. The fourth is not reading the bad-weather clause, which varies from one tour to another.
