In 2027, England and Wales have 8 bank holidays, Scotland 9 and Northern Ireland 10, according to GOV.UK. 3 May and 31 May are bank holidays in all three nations, and a single day of leave turns each three-day weekend into a four-day break. Two days of leave make five.
Checked on against the sources cited in the article (GOV.UK, Acas, National Rail, eisteddfod.wales, AA, Chortle).
The 2027 bank holiday calendar is out, and it gives you several three-day weekends that one or two days of leave can stretch. In the UK, a bank holiday that falls on a Monday or a Friday creates a three-day weekend with no leave needed. In 2027 that gives four such weekends in England and Wales, four in Scotland and five in Northern Ireland, and each nation has its own calendar.
This guide sets out the dates nation by nation, the leave sequences that stretch a three-day weekend to nine days, the employment rules that govern taking leave, and what to expect from a day trip out of London on the longest weekends. Bank holiday dates come from the GOV.UK « Bank holidays » page, checked on 25 October 2026. Other dates and figures cite their own source in the body. For a first trip to London, our 8 London experiences to book for a first trip complete this calendar.
1. The 2027 calendar, nation by nation
The reference is the « Bank holidays » page on GOV.UK, which publishes a separate table for each nation. The table below lists the thirteen dates that matter for a trip. When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday takes its place, normally the following Monday. In 2027 Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday, hence the substitute days of Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December.
| Date 2027 | England and Wales | Scotland | Northern Ireland |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri 1 Jan | yes | yes | yes |
| Mon 4 Jan | no | yes (substitute) | no |
| Wed 17 Mar | no | no | yes |

Six dates are shared by all three nations: 1 January, Good Friday (26 March), 3 May, 31 May, and the Christmas substitute days on 27 and 28 December. Scotland differs on five points. It adds the 2 January substitute (Monday 4 January), the summer bank holiday on 2 August and St Andrew’s Day on Tuesday 30 November, and it does not observe Easter Monday (29 March) or the summer bank holiday of 30 August. Northern Ireland adds St Patrick’s Day on Wednesday 17 March and the Battle of the Boyne holiday on Monday 12 July. England and Wales share the same calendar.
2. Three-day weekends you can take without leave
A three-day weekend with no leave forms when a bank holiday falls on a Monday or a Friday. The number of such weekends is therefore lower than the count of Monday and Friday bank holidays, because Easter and Christmas link up with a weekend and form four-day blocks.
| Nation | Bank holidays in total | Falling on a Monday or Friday | Three-day weekends with no leave | Four-day blocks with no leave |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| England and Wales | 8 | 7 | 4 (1 Jan, 3 May, 31 May, 30 Aug) | 2 (Easter, Christmas) |
| Scotland | 9 | 7 | 4 (26 Mar, 3 May, 31 May, 2 Aug) | 2 (1–4 Jan, Christmas) |
| Northern Ireland | 10 | 8 | 5 (1 Jan, 3 May, 31 May, 12 Jul, 30 Aug) | 2 (Easter, Christmas) |

In practice, the weekend of Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January is already a long weekend in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Monday 4 January stays a working day for those nations. In Scotland, 26 March forms a weekend from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 March, because Monday 29 is a working day there. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, Easter gives a four-day block with no leave, from Friday 26 to Monday 29 March. Christmas gives a four-day block, from Saturday 25 to Tuesday 28 December, in all three nations.
The 12 July and 2 August holidays each concern a single nation: Northern Ireland for the first, Scotland for the second. To compare with the end of 2026, our UK Christmas holidays in 2026 covers the festive period and its closures.
3. Leave sequences: four, five or nine days
Each day of leave placed next to a bank holiday lengthens the break. One day of leave turns a three-day weekend into a four-day break, two days make five, and five days around Easter or Christmas make nine. The table lists the most useful sequences, worked out from the GOV.UK dates and checked day by day.
| Sequence | Days away | Leave days | Nations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri 1 – Sun 3 Jan | 3 | 0 | England, Wales, Northern Ireland |
| Fri 1 – Mon 4 Jan | 4 | 0 | Scotland |
| Fri 1 – Mon 4 Jan (leave on Mon 4) | 4 | 1 | England, Wales, Northern Ireland |
| Fri 26 – Sun 28 Mar | 3 | 0 | Scotland |
| Fri 26 – Mon 29 Mar | 4 | 0 | England, Wales, Northern Ireland |
| Thu 25 – Mon 29 Mar | 5 | 1 | England, Wales, Northern Ireland |
| Wed 24 – Mon 29 Mar | 6 | 2 | England, Wales, Northern Ireland |
| Wed 24 Mar – Thu 1 Apr | 9 | 5 | England, Wales, Northern Ireland |
| Fri 30 Apr – Mon 3 May | 4 | 1 | All nations |
| Fri 28 – Mon 31 May | 4 | 1 | All nations |
| Fri 9 – Mon 12 Jul | 4 | 1 | Northern Ireland |
| Fri 30 Jul – Mon 2 Aug | 4 | 1 | Scotland |
| Fri 27 – Mon 30 Aug | 4 | 1 | England, Wales, Northern Ireland |
| Sat 25 – Tue 28 Dec | 4 | 0 | All nations |
| Thu 23 – Tue 28 Dec | 6 | 2 | All nations |
| Thu 23 – Fri 31 Dec | 9 | 5 | All nations |

Three points on reading this table. First, for the early May weekend, the day to take off is Friday 30 April: the weekend that starts on Saturday 1 May, with Monday 3 May, is already three days, and one day of leave on Friday 30 makes it four. Taking Tuesday 4 May also gives four days, from Saturday 1 to Tuesday 4, if you would rather take leave after the bank holiday Monday.
Next, the nine-day Easter break does not repeat exactly in Scotland: Monday 29 March is a working day there, so the same block from Wednesday 24 March to Thursday 1 April needs six days of leave. Finally, at Christmas, Friday 24 December is a working day. Taking it is the first step to lengthen the festive break, which reaches nine days from Thursday 23 to Friday 31 December with five days of leave.
4. Leave, closures and bank holidays: what employment law says
Taking a sequence assumes your employer agrees, and UK law leaves employers a wide margin. Three rules, taken from the official pages, are worth knowing before you book a flight or a stay.
- The right to leave. A worker is entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid leave a year, capped at 28 days for a five-day week. Bank holidays can count towards those 5.6 weeks, so they do not always add to your leave. See GOV.UK, Holiday entitlement rights and Acas, Bank holidays and Christmas (both checked 25 October 2026).
- Imposed closure. An employer can require staff to take leave during a closure, such as at Christmas, provided it gives at least twice as many days’ notice as the number of days it imposes. Notice is counted in calendar days: two imposed days need at least four calendar days’ notice (Acas, checked 25 October 2026).
- Part-time work. A part-time worker who does not usually work on a bank holiday cannot be made to take it as leave. Otherwise, the rule depends on the employment contract.
For a sequence you want to take on your own initiative, your employer has to approve it. Put the request in as soon as the dates are set, to leave time to discuss it.
5. Where to go on a long weekend
Two destinations suit three- and four-day weekends: London, for a day out of the city, and Edinburgh, whose 2027 calendar is marked by Monday 2 August and the Festival Fringe.

A private tour from London to Stonehenge, Bath and the Cotswolds
This Viator product is a day trip from London, with Stonehenge, Bath and the Cotswolds in its title. The Viator check of 25 October 2026 shows departures open on all three days, from 1 to 3 May 2027. The route and duration are on the Viator listing: we do not repeat them here.
Highlights
- Departures open on Saturday 1, Sunday 2 and Monday 3 May 2027, the three days checked
- Rated 5.0 from 197 Viator reviews at the time of checking

Edinburgh at the end of summer 2027
Monday 2 August is a bank holiday in Scotland. The weekend before it, from Saturday 31 July to Monday 2 August, is therefore three days with no leave, and one day of leave on Friday 30 July makes it four. According to Chortle, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe runs from 6 to 30 August 2027. The organisers have rejected calls to bring the event forward. The festival’s own website could not be checked at the time of writing.
Highlights
- A three-day weekend with no leave at the end of July
- The Fringe from 6 to 30 August 2027
6. Traffic, trains and crowds: the benchmarks
No 2027 traffic estimate had turned up at the date of checking, and VisitBritain could not be consulted (HTTP 403). The only figures come from the AA for the late August 2026 weekend: they give an order of magnitude, not a forecast.
| Day | Drivers potentially on the road | Share of drivers planning to drive |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 28 August 2026 | 23.5 million | 68% |
| Monday 31 August 2026 | 21.6 million | 63% |
Source: AA, press release on the last bank holiday before Christmas, dated 24 August 2026 and updated 7 October 2026, checked 25 October 2026.
Monday 30 August 2027 is the summer bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as Monday 31 August 2026 was for the AA. Scotland marks its summer bank holiday on 2 August. No 2027 crowd figures had turned up at the date of checking.
For trains, National Rail says Birmingham New Street will be closed from Thursday 24 to Monday 28 December 2026, with no trains to or from the station. It also announces an engineering programme on the overhead line over the Christmas periods of 2027 and 2028. The programme runs over three years and is worth £13 million. At the time of checking, only one source, the operator’s own, describes it, and no 2027 timetable had turned up.
For the rest of the network, no source consulted gives the timetable for 25 or 26 December 2027. Easter Monday 2027 (29 March) is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but no 2027 rail data had turned up for that day. Check National Rail before you travel, as no 2027 source has been found so far.
7. Wales and Northern Ireland: the dates specific to each nation
Wales follows the English calendar in the GOV.UK tables: there is no extra bank holiday to take. It does host a major cultural event, though. The 2027 National Eisteddfod takes place in Cemaes, near Machynlleth in Powys, from 31 July to 7 August 2027, according to the Eisteddfod’s official site.
In Northern Ireland, the calendar has two days of its own. Wednesday 17 March (St Patrick’s Day) makes no long weekend: to build one, you would take Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 March, which gives five days from Saturday 13 to Wednesday 17. Monday 12 July (Battle of the Boyne, or Orangemen’s Day) makes a three-day weekend, from Saturday 10 to Monday 12 July. It is also a date with strong political associations, so check local events before planning a visit.
For the exact dates of Northern Ireland’s holidays, the NIDirect, Bank holidays page refers to the GOV.UK list, which covers 2026 to 2028.
What other guides don’t tell you
The points below are checked against the sources cited; the rail point rests on a single National Rail page. They are absent from the guides we consulted. The answers given by AI search tools we tested cite neither Acas’s notice rule nor the works at Birmingham New Street.
- 4 January 2027 is a bank holiday in Scotland. 2 January falls on a Saturday, so its substitute is Monday 4 January, which gives four days with no leave, from 1 to 4 January. According to GOV.UK, Bank holidays (checked 25 October 2026).
- An employer can impose leave days during a closure, with notice counted in calendar days. Two imposed days need at least four calendar days’ notice. According to Acas, Bank holidays and Christmas (checked 25 October 2026).
- Birmingham New Street is closed from 24 to 28 December 2026, and Christmas engineering work is announced for 2027 and 2028. The programme runs over three years and is worth £13 million of overhead line work. According to National Rail, New Street closure (checked 25 October 2026).
- The 2027 National Eisteddfod runs from 31 July to 7 August in Cemaes, Powys. This event is missing from the bank holiday guides we consulted. According to the National Eisteddfod of Wales (checked 25 October 2026).

Pricing depends on trip length and profileFrequently asked questions about 2027 bank holidays
What are the 2027 bank holidays in the UK?
England and Wales have 8, Scotland 9 and Northern Ireland 10. The dates shared by all three nations are 1 January, Good Friday (26 March), 3 May, 31 May and the Christmas substitute days on 27 and 28 December. The full list for each nation is in the first table, based on GOV.UK.
Is there a bank holiday on 4 January 2027?
Yes, in Scotland only. 2 January 2027 falls on a Saturday, so its substitute is Monday 4 January. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 4 January is a working day: taking it as leave gives four days with the New Year weekend, so you need to book leave for that.
Which 2027 bank holidays fall on a Monday or a Friday?
Seven in England and Wales, seven in Scotland and eight in Northern Ireland. Not all of them make a three-day weekend: when two bank holidays fall in the same weekend, as at Easter and Christmas, they form a four-day block. That leaves four three-day weekends in England and Wales, four in Scotland and five in Northern Ireland.
How much leave do you need for a four-day weekend in May 2027?
Just one day. Friday 30 April gives four days with the weekend of Saturday 1 May and Monday 3 May, a bank holiday in all three nations. Taking Tuesday 4 May also gives four days, from Saturday 1 to Tuesday 4. With two days of leave, Thursday 29 and Friday 30 April, you get five days, from Thursday 29 April to Monday 3 May.
What is the longest leave sequence in 2027?
Nine days, with five days of leave. For Easter, it runs from Wednesday 24 March to Thursday 1 April in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. For Christmas, it runs from Thursday 23 to Friday 31 December in all three nations. In Scotland, the same Easter block needs six days of leave, because Monday 29 March is a working day there.
Are bank holidays included in paid leave?
They can be. Bank holidays can count towards the 5.6 weeks of statutory paid leave, capped at 28 days for a five-day week, according to GOV.UK and Acas. Pay for working a bank holiday depends on your contract and any collective agreement.
Can my employer make me take days off during the Christmas closure?
Yes, within limits. The employer must give at least twice as many days’ notice as the number of days it imposes, counted in calendar days. Two imposed days need at least four calendar days’ notice. A part-time worker who does not usually work on a bank holiday cannot be made to take it, according to Acas.
Are there trains on 25 December 2027?
No source consulted gives the national rail timetable for 25 December 2027 as of the checking date. For Birmingham New Street, National Rail announces engineering work over Christmas 2027 and 2028. Before any holiday journey, check the official timetables the day before and on the day itself.
Does the Edinburgh Fringe 2027 take place in August?
Yes, from 6 to 30 August 2027, according to Chortle (article of 2 September 2026, checked 25 October 2026). The organisers have rejected calls to bring the event forward. The festival’s own website could not be checked at that date.
