Ten day trips leave Funchal, from $40.21 to $90.20 per adult (2 travelers), rated 4.79 to 5.0. Activity runs 3 to 7.5 hours, and all ten offer a full refund if you cancel 24 hours ahead. The private west-side day is $148.43 per traveler. The north-west 4×4 gives the fullest loop; the shared minibus costs least.

Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability) for departures from November 9, 2026 to January 7, 2027.

Funchal is the island’s capital, and every tour in this list leaves from it. Most readers arrive either on a cruise stop or for a short stay, and they ask the same question: which day trip is worth the money, and what will it cost on top of the price? We kept only tours rated 4.7 or higher with at least 100 reviews, departing from Funchal, and checked their prices and open dates for the window from November 9, 2026 to January 7, 2027. The most complete single day is the north-west 4×4 loop to Porto Moniz and Fanal, rated 4.92 across Viator and TripAdvisor.

The list is not ten different experiences. Four of the ten are 4×4 rides that overlap in route, so read them as variants of the same island rather than ten separate days. The other six are a shared minibus, a whale-watching boat, a canyoning morning, a hard hike, a private day and a half-day village safari. The table below gives the numbers, and the cards explain what each tour is for. Choose by the three things that decide a Madeira day: how long you have, how much you want to spend, and how much walking you can do.

We also explain what the price does not include. The Cabo Girão skywalk entrance and the official access fee for the PR1 hiking trail are paid separately, some pool areas charge an entry fee, and the bus alternative to the north coast takes more than two hours each way. Those details change the real cost of a day more than a few dollars of difference between two tours.

Why Funchal works as a base for day trips

Madeira is a small island, but its roads climb steeply and follow the coast around deep valleys, so a short distance on the map can take much longer by road. Funchal sits on the south coast, and the far west and the north coast are the two areas where a guided tour saves the most effort. Every product in this list starts there, which means most tours include hotel pickup in the city, and the few that do not say so clearly on the product page.

The public bus network reaches the north coast, but it is slow. Third-party estimates put the trip from Porto Moniz to Funchal at about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes, with around three departures a day. The operators are Rodoeste, SIGA and Horários do Funchal, and no official timetable is published online, so confirm the schedule locally before you plan a day around it. A traveler on a tight budget who accepts a long day can take the bus. Most others will find a guided tour simpler, especially on a short stay.

The season matters for this window. November to January is the cooler and wetter part of the year on Madeira. Sea temperature sits near 70°F (21°C) in November and falls to 66 to 68°F (19 to 20°C) in December. December daytime highs run 63 to 68°F (17 to 20°C), with cooler nights. Rain is more frequent than in summer: one count gives about 11 days with some rain in Funchal in November. The 4×4 tours still run, but the north coast and the high plateau are cooler and often cloudy. The Paul da Serra plateau, at about 1,400 m (4,600 feet), and the Fanal forest can sit in cloud, so pack a layer and check the forecast on the day.

Entry rules are simple for most American readers. US citizens can visit Portugal, Madeira included, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, with a valid passport. The EU travel authorization, ETIAS, is expected to apply to US visitors once it starts, but sources disagree on the start date. Check the official EU site before you travel and do not rely on a date from a blog.

The 10 best day trips from Funchal, one by one

Open-roof 4x4 on the north-west coast of Madeira
Source: Viator

1. North-west 4×4: Porto Moniz, Fanal and Ponta do Sol

Rating 4.92 (3899 reviews) 7.5 hours of activity $78.78 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the tour we would book first if you have one day and want the whole west side in one go. The open-roof 4×4 climbs out of Funchal to the Paul da Serra plateau, drops into the Fanal laurel forest, then reaches the Porto Moniz natural pools and the black-sand beach at Seixal before the coastal descent to Ponta do Sol. Pickup is free in central Funchal and near the port; outside that area an extra fee applies. The listed 7.5 hours is activity time only, so the day starts early and runs past the drop-off; it suits travelers who want a full day on the road and do not mind the bends. Bring a layer for the plateau, and budget for lunch and for the Cabo Girão skywalk, which the price does not include. If the sea is rough, the pools can close, so check on the morning of the tour.

  • Porto Moniz pools, Seixal beach and the Fanal laurel forest
  • Free pickup in central Funchal and near the port
  • Cabo Girão entrance (5 euros) not included

2. East-side jeep safari: Pico do Areeiro, Santana and Ponta de São Lourenço

Rating 4.85 (937 reviews) 7 hours of activity $76.50 per adult (2 travelers)

Choose this if you want the east end of the island and the view from Pico do Areeiro without walking the full trail. The jeep climbs to the Pico do Areeiro lookout, drops to the village of Santana, and finishes on the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula. A driver-guide gives live commentary through the day. Hotel pickups start before the listed departure time, so the first pickup in the morning can be earlier than you expect. Lunch and drinks are not included, and the Blacoes Levada walk has its own entry fee. The operator does not recommend this tour for pregnant travelers or for people with a spinal problem, so check the health notes before you book. It is a good fit for a first visit that wants the high views and the coast in one day without a hike.

  • Pico do Areeiro lookout, Santana and the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula
  • Hotel and cruise-port pickup in Funchal
  • Lunch and Blacoes Levada fee not included

3. Full day around the island in an open-roof 4×4

Rating 5.0 (198 reviews) 7.5 hours of activity $70.79 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the highest-rated 4×4 in the set, at 5.0 across 198 reviews, and it is built for the traveler who wants one day around the whole island without choosing a side in advance. The open-roof vehicle is driven by a professional guide-driver, and the group is capped at 12 travelers. Pickup and drop-off are at your Funchal hotel, which saves the taxi and the planning on the first morning. Lunch is optional and not included, so pack something or plan to buy lunch at a stop. Gratuities are excluded as well. The supplier notes that the tour is not recommended for travelers with heart problems or spinal injuries, so read that before you choose it. It is the easiest choice in the set for a first visit that wants the most island for one fixed price.

  • Rated 5.0 on 198 reviews, the top rating among the 4×4 tours
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Funchal
  • Lunch optional and not included

4. West coast on a shared minibus: Fanal and Porto Moniz

Rating 4.92 (396 reviews) 7 hours of activity $40.21 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the budget full day, and the price is the reason to choose it. You share an air-conditioned minibus with up to eight travelers and certified local guides on the west loop: the south coast, the central plateau, the Fanal forest and Porto Moniz. It is not a private tour, so expect a shared schedule and fewer stops than a jeep day. Pickup is in Funchal only, because the operator does not collect outside the city. If your hotel is elsewhere on the island, you will need a taxi to the pickup point first. A booster seat is provided for children. Check the calendar before you plan around the holidays: within this window there are no departures from December 24 to 27, on December 31 or on January 1. The tour is one of the two in the set flagged as likely to sell out, so book early.

  • Shared minibus, 8 travelers maximum, not private
  • Pickup in Funchal only
  • Air-conditioned minibus with a booster seat for children

5. Whale and dolphin watching by catamaran from the Funchal marina

Rating 4.91 (1985 reviews) 3 hours on the water $90.20 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the only wildlife product in the set, and the only one on the water. The catamaran leaves from the VipDolphins kiosk in the Funchal marina for three hours. The boat does not wait for late arrivals, so check in 30 minutes before departure. Soft drinks, bottled water and alcoholic beverages are listed as included. There is no hotel pickup, so you walk to the marina yourself, which is simple if you are on a cruise or staying in the city center. Whales and dolphins are seen through the year off Madeira, with common dolphins mostly in winter and spring, but no sighting is guaranteed. For a November to January trip, the odds of a whale are lower than in the spring and early autumn peak. Book this for the wildlife and the sea, and treat a whale as a bonus.

  • Three hours on the water from the Funchal marina
  • Soft drinks, water and alcoholic beverages listed as included
  • No hotel pickup: check in 30 minutes before departure

6. Canyoning Level 1: a five-hour river day near Funchal

Rating 4.98 (1166 reviews) 5 hours of activity $74.21 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the tour that gets you wet, and it is the one that makes the Madeira days feel different from the car rides. The activity starts at the main gate of the Parque Ecológico do Funchal, then moves to the Barracão Bar parking area, with two certified canyoning guides, a snack and water during the activity. Hotel pickup in Funchal or Caniço is included, and port pickup is on request. Level 1 is the entry grade, but you still need reasonable fitness, a willingness to wear a wetsuit and to get wet, and shoes that can take it. The product flags it as not recommended for people with heart problems. Pack a dry layer for the drive back, and leave valuables at the hotel. It is the best pick in the set for a traveler who wants the day to be active rather than scenic.

  • Snack and water during the activity
  • Hotel pickup in Funchal or Caniço, port on request
  • Not recommended for people with heart problems

7. Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo: the PR1 hike, for the fit

Rating 4.82 (114 reviews) 6.5 hours of activity $51.38 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the only walk in the set, and the only one rated hard. The route runs from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest point on the island, then descends through the Achadas da Teixeira. The official rules make the Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo section one-way, and the supplier rates the hike hard, with a long climb and uneven rock. The product page does not state a pickup time, so confirm the hotel slot with the operator after you book. Only 17 of the 60 window days are open, roughly one every three or four days, and the product is flagged as likely to sell out. The government access fee for the classified PR1 is excluded from the Viator price and is paid separately through the official SIMplifica reservation system. Ask the operator whether they book that slot for you. Choose this only if you have hiked long descents before and have a full day to spare.

  • Hard rating: long climb and uneven rock
  • Pickup time not stated: confirm after booking
  • PR1 access fee paid separately, not in the price

8. Half-day village safari: the cheapest half day in the set

Rating 4.79 (334 reviews) 3 hours of activity $50.24 per adult (2 travelers)

Pick this if you have a morning or an afternoon free and want to see the interior of the island without committing to a full day. The open-roof jeep runs a three-hour village safari with a stop at the Boca do Namorados viewpoint, and a driver-guide leads the group with all activities included. Pickup is from your hotel or from the cruise port. Cruise passengers must give the ship name, the docking time and the departure time when they book. Lunch, food, drinks and gratuities are not included. It is the right choice for a short, low-cost taste of the countryside, and it leaves the high trails and the coast for another day. Compare it with the east-side jeep if you can spare a full day, since that route covers more ground.

  • Three hours in an open-roof jeep
  • Hotel or cruise-port pickup
  • Cruise passengers: give ship name and times when booking

9. Private west-side full day with a local driver-guide

Rating 4.96 (316 reviews) 5 to 6 hours of activity $148.43 per traveler (2 travelers) Private tour

This is the only private product in the set and the most expensive per person, at $148.43 per traveler on a 2-traveler basis. The price is quoted per traveler, not per adult as for the other nine, so compare the total for two, which is $296.85 for two travelers. In exchange, the day is yours: a local driver-guide takes you around the west side of the island within a flexible five to six hours. It is rated 4.96 on 316 reviews. Pickup is limited to the Funchal area, and the group is capped at seven travelers. The Porto Moniz pools entrance and the Cabo Girão entrance are not included, so budget for both. If you want the west coast without a shared schedule and can accept the price gap, this is the choice.

  • Private, up to seven travelers
  • Porto Moniz pools and Cabo Girão entrances not included
  • Pickup in the Funchal area only

10. Skywalk, wine tasting and vineyards in a half-day 4×4

Rating 4.86 (545 reviews) 4 hours of activity $85.63 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the afternoon option that combines the Cabo Girão skywalk with a wine tasting and a vineyard tour, all in a four-hour 4×4 ride. It suits the traveler who wants the glass-floored viewpoint and a tasting without the commitment of a full day. Free pickup is available in central Funchal and near the port, and pickups outside that area cost extra. The Cabo Girão entrance, which is 5 euros for visitors over 12 at the time of checking, is not included, so pay it through the SIMplifica portal, as the official Visit Madeira page lists, and confirm the payment method before you go. Only 25 of the 60 window days are open, so the calendar is tight and the product is best booked early. If you have only one afternoon and want the viewpoint and a drink, this is a better use of it than a city walk. Pair it with the north-west loop if you want the cliffs and the coast in the same week.

  • Four hours with a wine tasting and a vineyard tour
  • Free pickup in central Funchal and near the port
  • Cabo Girão entrance not included

Practical tips for day trips from Funchal

Door-to-door time. The durations on the cards are activity time, and the hotel pickup adds time before and after. The product pages give no exact pickup times. The east-side jeep notes that hotel pickups start before the listed departure time, and the PR1 page states no pickup time at all. Expect an early start on the full-day tours, and confirm the exact time with the operator after booking.

Getting to the north coast without a car. The bus is the budget option, and it takes a long day; the journey times are given in the section above. Tickets are normally bought from the driver, and some buses do not take cards, so carry euros in cash for the bus, the pool entry and any tip.

Cabo Girão skywalk. The entry fee is 5 euros for visitors over 12. Children up to 12 and residents of the Madeira region are exempt. The site is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Older prices of 2 or 3 euros still appear on blogs and tour listings, so use the official Visit Madeira page to confirm the current rate and the payment method before you go.

Hiking reservations. Since January 1, 2026, classified PR trails in Madeira need a reservation through the SIMplifica platform, with 30-minute entry slots. You need an account even as an individual hiker, and payment is taken at booking. The official fees are 4.50 euros per person for an individual classified trail, 10.50 euros for the one-way Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo section of the PR1, and 9 euros combined for two or more trails in a day, excluding the PR1. Residents are exempt from payment and reservation but must still register. Hiking a classified trail without a valid reservation can bring fines, and the official page says infractions in the autonomous region can reach 10,000 euros.

PR1 status on the day. The official page says the PR1 is covered by the new rules and advises checking the trail status before you set out. Some blogs describe closures or sunrise access without a ticket, but those claims are not confirmed by the official source. Check the official status page the morning you walk.

Porto Moniz pools. Some parts of the pool complex charge an entry fee; one recent reviewer reported about 3 euros per person, which may be out of date, so check at the gate. Surf is the main hazard. Large waves can break over the pool walls in rough weather, lifeguards are not guaranteed at every pool, and the pools can close on high-wave days. The pools are open year-round, with reduced hours in winter. Calm seas at low to mid tide are the usual guidance, and grippy shoes matter because the volcanic rock is slippery when wet.

Tipping. There is no official standard for tour drivers or guides in Madeira. A travel FAQ updated in July 2026 suggests about 10 euros for a guide who impressed you, adjustable by up to 5 euros depending on length and quality. Gratuities are excluded on the open-roof island tour and the half-day village safari, so budget for them separately. Tipping is discretionary.

Cruise passengers. Give the ship name, the docking time and the departure time when you book the village safari (see the card above). Build in a buffer between your return to the port and the ship’s all-aboard time.

Questions travelers ask about Funchal day trips

Which Madeira day trip gives the best value?

It depends on what you want to see. The shared west minibus is the lowest price at $40.21 per adult, rated 4.92 on 396 reviews, but it is shared and picks up only in Funchal. For the most complete single loop, the north-west 4×4 costs $78.78 per adult and is rated 4.92 on 3,899 reviews. Read the north-west loop or the shared west minibus.

Can I see the north coast without renting a car?

Yes. Most tours pick up at hotels in Funchal, so the north-west loop and the shared west minibus need no car. The public bus to Porto Moniz is possible, but third-party estimates put the trip at about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes, with around three departures a day, and no official timetable is published online. A traveler on a tight budget who accepts a long day can take the bus. Most others will find a guided tour simpler.

Do the tour prices include the entrance fees?

Usually not, so add them to the budget before you compare totals. The Cabo Girão skywalk is 5 euros for visitors over 12 and is excluded from three of the ten tours. The official PR1 access fee is outside the Viator price and is paid through the reservation system. Some Porto Moniz pool areas charge an entry fee. Each product page lists its exclusions, and the card for each tour shows the main ones.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

All ten products carry the free cancellation flag, which means a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. The product pages give one cancellation rule: the 24-hour full refund. It does not say what happens if the operator cancels for weather or sea state, so ask the operator directly before you book, especially for the whale boat and the canyoning morning.

Which tour suits a traveler who cannot walk far?

The jeep and 4×4 tours are rated suitable for all fitness levels, but the roads are off-road and the viewpoints involve short walks. Skip the PR1 hike, which the supplier rates hard, and think twice about canyoning, which needs reasonable fitness. If walking is limited, ask the operator about the stops before you book, and confirm where the vehicle can park near each viewpoint.

Are whales guaranteed on a November to January trip?

No. The IWC whale-watching handbook states that whale and dolphin watching works all year off Madeira, and bottlenose dolphins are present year-round. Spring and early autumn give the best odds for whales, and sightings in winter are less frequent but still happen. Ask the operator about recent sightings, and treat a whale as a bonus rather than the reason to book.
