Ten day trips from Reykjavik run in winter, priced from $113.90 to $435 per adult for 2 travelers. The highest-rated is a private Golden Circle at 4.98, and the most-reviewed is a South Coast tour with 6,704 reviews. With about 4 hours of daylight at the solstice, a 4 to 6 hour volcano hike suits a short day.

Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

Winter changes the arithmetic of a day trip from Reykjavik. Daylight is short, some pickups start in the dark. We built this list for a reader with two to five days in the city who wants to book a few day trips between late November and January, and who needs to know what each one costs, how long the day lasts, and what the winter light does to the plan.

We checked ten tours on the Viator partner API on November 7, 2026, and kept only those with a combined rating of at least 4.7 and at least 100 reviews. Every price is per adult for two travelers, in US dollars. Winter window only (November 21, 2026 to January 20, 2027); summer prices were not measured. Checked on November 7, 2026. Ratings combine Viator and TripAdvisor reviews, as the API returns them, and we show the Viator-only figure where it differs a lot from the combined one. If you want the highest rating in the set, start with the private Golden Circle. If you are choosing by price, read the table first.

The list does not cover Northern Lights evening tours, food walks, airport transfers or multi-day packages. Two of the products carry a special offer flag in this window, the ice cave tour and the Reykjanes volcano day: recheck their price on the day you book. Prices move, so open the product page and confirm the date before you pay.

Why Winter Changes the Day Trip

Daylight sets the shape of the day. Visit Reykjavik publishes a sunrise and sunset guide for the city, which we checked on November 7, 2026. It gives sunrise at 9:11 a.m. and sunset at 5:11 p.m. in early November, and sunrise at 10:45 a.m. with sunset at 3:47 p.m. in early December. Around the winter solstice, the city has a little over 4 hours of daylight, with sunrise near 11:20 a.m. and sunset near 3:30 p.m. An operator blog that runs these tours notes that December return trips can run partly in the dark, so the late part of the day needs a plan too.

That changes three things. First, the sightseeing on a winter tour is squeezed into a few hours of light. Second, lunch moves. On the Snaefellsnes tour, the farm meal becomes the last stop at about 4 p.m. between November 15 and January 31, because the light is short. The meal is late, not cancelled. Third, a short day is a real option. The 4 to 6 hour volcano hike is the easiest product in this list to fit into a winter day, while the longer tours can run into the dark at one end or the other.

Plan for the length of the tour, not the length of the list. Eleven hours is a full day in any season, and in winter it leaves little room for a second activity on the same date. Durations run from 4 to 6 hours on the Fagradalsfjall hike to 14.5 hours on the glacier lagoon day.

Volcanic Activity and Road Conditions: What We Checked

Two products in this list are volcano hikes, and their Viator titles or URLs use the words « eruption » or « active volcano. » We have not written that an eruption is under way, because the sources we read do not say so. The Icelandic Meteorological Office article we checked, dated October 27, 2026, reports slow ground uplift at Svartsengi and low seismic activity, shows no eruption on its current page, and names a new magma intrusion along the Sundhnukur crater row as the most likely scenario. Safe Travel showed « No alerts at this time » when we checked it on November 7, 2026. The 2021 to 2023 Fagradalsfjall eruptions shaped the landscape of the Reykjanes hikes, but they are the background to the walk, not a current event.

Check the Icelandic Met Office (vedur.is) on the morning of your tour, along with Safe Travel, because operators decide on the day whether a route or a stop is safe to walk. For roads, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration notification page did not show a live status when we read it, so check its live map and the 1777 information line before you leave. The ice cave tour is the other product where the day can change. Check the operator’s current listing before you book, and ask what happens if the cave is closed.

The Ten Day Trips, One by One

Small-group Golden Circle day tour with Blue Lagoon entry
Source: Viator

1. Golden Circle with Blue Lagoon Entry

Rating 4.91 (6555 reviews) 11 hours $259 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the card to read if you want the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle in one winter day without planning two trips. The small group is picked up at your Reykjavik hotel or at a designated point, and the day takes in the classic Golden Circle stops, Kerid crater and Blue Lagoon admission. Eleven hours is a long day in winter. Sunset in early December comes before 4 p.m., so expect part of the return to be in the dark, and keep the evening free. Lunch is not included, but the scheduled stops have food for sale, so bring a little money and a snack. The mistake to avoid is treating this as a half day with a swim: it is a full day. If you are weighing the South Coast as well, read our full guide to choosing between the two routes before you book one route for each day.

2. Private Golden Circle

Rating 4.98 (124 reviews) 7 hours $435 per adult (2 travelers) Private tour

Pick this card if you are a couple or a small group that wants its own car, its own pace and a pickup point that suits you. At $435 per adult for two travelers, it is the most expensive tour in this list, and it has the highest rating in the set, 4.98, from only 124 reviews. That is a small sample, so read the number with that in mind. The car is yours for the day: you can linger at Gullfoss or Thingvellir without a bus clock running. Kerid crater admission and the parking fees at Faxi Waterfall and Thingvellir are included. Lunch is not, so pack one or plan a stop. Only 47 of the 61 dates in the window are open, the fewest of any tour here, so this is the card where early booking matters most. It suits a traveler who would rather pay for a flexible day than fit a group schedule.

3. Golden Circle Small Group with Tomato Farm

Rating 4.94 (1223 reviews) 9 hours $146.43 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the value pick on the Golden Circle. At $146.43 per adult for two travelers, it costs about 43% less than the $259 Blue Lagoon combination and well below the private car, and it adds a tomato farm stop. The group is small and led by a local guide, with a driver, WiFi, hotel pickup and drop-off, and all taxes and fees included. Lunch is not included, so do not count on a planned meal, and check whether food is sold at the stop. Nine hours is the full day, so keep the evening free. Of the Golden Circle options here, it has the second-largest number of reviews after the Blue Lagoon combination, with over a thousand in total. It suits a traveler who wants the classic route, a guide who talks, and a lower price, and who does not need the lagoon in the same day.

4. South Coast Full Day, Small Group

Rating 4.81 (6704 reviews) 10 hours $147.58 to $185.04 per adult (2 travelers)

Choose this card if the South Coast is the trip you came for and you want the route with the largest body of reviews in this list. It has more than six thousand reviews, split between Viator at 4.8 and TripAdvisor at 4.9, so the combined 4.81 rests on a large sample rather than a handful of enthusiasts. The price is a range because the product has two options, $147.58 to $185.04 per adult for two travelers. Check which option the page shows before you book. Pickup is at designated bus stops or at the cruise terminal, not at your hotel, so plan the walk or the taxi to the stop. The guide speaks English, and the tour includes all fees and taxes and a small-group guarantee. Lunch is not included, so the break is a moment to buy your own food. It suits a first South Coast trip with a clear plan, and a reader who would rather have waterfalls and black sand than a glacier walk.

5. Glacier Hike, Waterfall and Black Sand Beach

Rating 4.93 (843 reviews) 11 hours $185 per adult (2 travelers)

Pick this card for the glacier walk. The tour adds a guided glacier hike to the usual South Coast stops of a waterfall and a black sand beach, and the equipment needed for the hike is included, so you do not need to rent or buy gear for the day. That changes the packing list. Bring warm layers, a waterproof outer shell and sturdy boots, and expect to walk on uneven ice. The product has 843 reviews, 112 of them on Viator at 4.8 and 731 on TripAdvisor at 4.9. Dinner is not included, so pack a snack for the drive back. At 11 hours, it is a long winter day, so think about who in your group is up for a long walk and a long drive on the same date. It suits a traveler who wants to walk on ice with a guide and does not mind a full day.

6. Katla Ice Cave and South Coast Waterfalls

Rating 4.70 (242 reviews) 11 hours $256.70 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the only ice cave tour in the list, and the card to read most carefully. It leaves from a departure point in Reykjavik, with hotel pickup options, and visits an ice cave together with South Coast waterfalls. All fees and taxes are included, and food and drinks are not. Its combined rating is 4.70 from 242 reviews, the lowest in this set, so do not expect it to win on score. Book it for the cave. Check the operator’s current listing before you book, ask what happens if the cave is closed, and keep a spare day in your plan. The product carries a special offer flag in this window, which means the price can change, so check it on the product page on the day you book. It suits a traveler who has a clear reason to want a cave and the flexibility to accept a change of plan.

7. Snaefellsnes Peninsula with Homemade Meal

Rating 4.89 (913 reviews) 11 hours $223.53 per adult (2 travelers)

Snaefellsnes is the peninsula on the west coast, and this is the only tour in the list that covers it. It fits the whole peninsula into one long day from Reykjavik, which suits a traveler who wants a day of landscapes rather than a string of short stops. The winter detail matters. Because the light is short, the farm meal moves to the last stop of the day, at about 4 p.m., between November 15 and January 31. The lunch is late, not cancelled, so do not plan a midday meal. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with a local guide and driver. Drinks are not included. The product has 913 reviews, with 206 on Viator at 4.8 and 707 on TripAdvisor at 4.9. Pick this card if you want a long day on the peninsula and can accept a late meal.

Hiker on a Fagradalsfjall volcano walk from Reykjavik

8. Fagradalsfjall Volcano Hike

Rating 4.97 (877 reviews) 4 to 6 hours $169 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the shortest day in the list and the higher-rated of the two volcano hikes, at 4.97 from 877 reviews, with reviewers averaging 5.0 on both Viator and TripAdvisor. The walk runs through the Fagradalsfjall area on the Reykjanes Peninsula, where lava fields from the 2021 to 2023 eruptions still shape the ground, and a certified local guide leads the group. Hiking poles and headlamps are included, and crampons are provided in winter if the ice calls for them. The hike does not promise a view of current activity. Whether the route approaches any active volcanic area depends on the situation on the day and on the operator’s decision, so treat the walk as a landscape hike. The meeting point is Bus Stop 3 on Laekjargata, the only pickup option, so plan your trip from the hotel to that stop. Lunch and parking are not included for self-drivers. Pick this card for a half day with a serious walk.

9. Volcano Site Hike and Reykjanes Sightseeing

Rating 4.80 (239 reviews) 9 hours $113.90 per adult (2 travelers)

This is the lowest price per person in the list, at $113.90 per adult for two travelers, and it pairs a volcano site hike with a full Reykjanes sightseeing stop. The day runs nine hours, with a professional guide, a headlamp and pickup at a designated meeting point. Pick it when the price matters more than the length of the day, or when you want a sightseeing stop in the middle of the day. The rating is 4.80 combined, from 239 reviews: 62 on Viator at 4.6 and 177 on TripAdvisor at 4.9. Lunch is not included. The product carries a special offer flag in this window, so the price can move before you book, and it is worth checking on the day. The meeting point is Tour Bus Stop 12 at Hofdatorg, so confirm the stop in your booking. Compared with the shorter hike above, this is a longer day that covers more ground and more driving.

10. Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach

Rating 4.72 (731 reviews) 14.5 hours $234 per adult (2 travelers)

Take this card for the glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach, and plan for the longest day in the list at 14.5 hours. The tour departs from the BSI bus terminal in Reykjavik, with a cruise port pickup if you choose that option, and the guided visit covers the lagoon and the beach. Winter makes the long day harder: the return can fall in the dark, and the window runs to January 20, so pack a headlamp and warm layers. The ratings tell two stories. Viator reviewers give this tour 4.4 from 179 reviews, while TripAdvisor reviewers give it 4.8 from 552, for a combined 4.72 across 731 reviews. That gap is worth knowing before you book. Food, drinks and gratuities are not included, so bring a packed meal. This listing is about the daytime lagoon, and this list does not promise Northern Lights. It suits a traveler who wants the lagoon and Diamond Beach in one day and is ready for a long return.

Preparing for the Trip

Book the dates early

The window runs from November 21, 2026 to January 20, 2027. The private Golden Circle has the fewest open dates in the list, at 47 of 61. Every other tour is open on at least 56 of the 61 days. Check the date on the live product page before you pay.

Plan for pickup time

Several products list pickup as confirmed later by the supplier, so the exact time or point comes after you book. Most tours in this window leave between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m.; the exact time is on each product page. Allow 30 to 60 minutes beyond the tour time for the pickup itself. The Fagradalsfjall hike is the exception, with a fixed meeting point at Bus Stop 3, Laekjargata.

Budget for lunch and tips

Most tours here leave lunch out, and food and drinks are commonly excluded. Tipping is not expected in Iceland. One operator’s guide puts a tip of up to about $20 for a guide and says drivers can be tipped without a set amount. Treat that as one operator’s view, not a rule.

Practical Tips for Winter Days

Keep one long tour per day. Two tours of 9 to 11 hours cannot share a winter date, and even the 4 to 6 hour hike is better on a day with nothing else on the calendar. A short morning at Reykjavik’s harbor or a museum is a sensible filler before a long pickup.

Ask about the stop schedule before you book. Some products describe the stops in detail, such as the Blue Lagoon combination, where scheduled stops allow snack and lunch purchases. Others leave the meal to you. Read the inclusions line on each product page and decide in advance whether you will eat on the road or before you leave.

Pack for the walk, not the photo. Hiking poles and headlamps come with some hikes here, but clothing and boots do not. Bring warm layers, a waterproof outer shell and sturdy footwear. The glacier hike and the ice cave both put you on uneven ground, so a camera is secondary to dry socks.

Read the cancellation deadline on each page. All ten tours carry the free cancellation flag in the data we measured, but the deadline sits on the product page and can differ from tour to tour. Save the confirmation and the deadline in the same place, and check both again on the day you book.

Know the emergency number. In Iceland, dial 112 for emergencies. Safe Travel lists this number and the same advice on routes and weather. Carry a charged phone with the Road Administration line, 1777, saved before you leave the hotel.

Handle a changed tour in writing. If an operator changes a route, stop or cave visit, ask in writing what changed and whether you can get a refund or a different date. The product page is the reference point for what was promised, so keep a screenshot of it from the day you booked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which day trip from Reykjavik has the highest rating?

The private Golden Circle has the highest combined rating in this list: 4.98 from 124 reviews, with 102 on Viator at 5.0 and 22 on TripAdvisor at 5.0. It costs $435 per adult for two travelers, the highest price in the set. If you want a larger sample, the Fagradalsfjall volcano hike has 4.97 from 877 reviews at $169 per adult, and the Golden Circle with Blue Lagoon entry has 4.91 from 6,555 reviews. See the private tour.

How much does a day trip from Reykjavik cost in winter?

For the window from November 21, 2026 to January 20, 2027, the ten tours we checked on November 7, 2026 range from $113.90 to $435 per adult for two travelers. Prices are per adult, and they cover only what each tour lists as included. Lunch, drinks and tips are extra on most tours. Prices change, so check the product page before you book, and read the special offer flags on two of the products.

How much daylight is there in winter?

Visit Reykjavik gives sunrise at 9:11 a.m. and sunset at 5:11 p.m. in early November, and sunrise at 10:45 a.m. with sunset at 3:47 p.m. in early December. Around the winter solstice, the city has a little over 4 hours of daylight. For long tours, that means the sightseeing happens in a few hours of light and part of the return can be in the dark.

Is it safe to book a volcano hike now?

This article does not claim that an eruption is under way. The Icelandic Met Office article we checked, dated October 27, 2026, shows no eruption on its current page. Safety is decided by the operator on the day. Check vedur.is and Safe Travel on the morning of your hike, and ask the operator what happens if the route changes before you book.

Is tipping expected in Iceland?

Tipping is not expected. Adventures.is, an operator blog published on October 17, 2023, says guides do not wait for a tip, mentions a tip of up to about $20 for a guide, and says drivers may be tipped without a set amount. That is one operator’s view, not a rule. If a guide goes well beyond the tour, a tip in cash is the simplest way to say thanks.

Can I cancel these tours for free?

All ten tours carry the free cancellation flag in the data we measured on November 7, 2026. The deadline is on each product page, and it can differ from one tour to another, so read it before you pay. Save the confirmation and check the deadline again on the day you book.
