A 3-day private Cyclades itinerary works island by island. Day 1 on Santorini: private guided tour + volcanic wine tasting. Day 2 on Mykonos: private island tour + sea kayaking towards Delos. Day 3 on Naxos: Rina Cave kayak + kitron distillery tour. Fast ferries between islands (30 min to 3h), all products rated 5.0 on Viator. The best starting point is the 5-hour Santorini guided tour, ideal at dawn before the cruise ships arrive.

My first time in the Cyclades was with a group tour: 48 people, a guide shouting through a headset microphone in Oia, a packed ferry in 38-degree heat. The second time, I did everything differently — one private experience per day, early morning ferries, local guides waiting at the hotel door. What you are reading here is the result of that second approach.

In 2026, the Cyclades are going through a transformation. Greece has capped cruise ships at 8,000 passengers per day in Santorini, introduced a €20 levy per cruise passenger in Mykonos, and the Special Spatial Framework for Tourism is drawing « red zones » to protect the local fabric. A traveller who books a private guided tour on Santorini is not affected by these restrictions — they are precisely the quality tourism target that the Greek authorities are seeking to encourage.

This article covers 10 Viator experiences spread across three islands — 4 on Santorini, 4 on Mykonos, 2 on Naxos — selected from the highest-rated options (5.0 on Viator, 57 to 179 reviews). For each island, I have chosen a range: private sightseeing tour, water activity, gastronomic experience, premium catamaran option. The itinerary works in both directions (Santorini first or Naxos first depending on your entry point), but the recommended order for a London-Santorini flight is Day 1 Santorini → Day 2 Mykonos → Day 3 Naxos.

Cyclades 2026: Why the Private Itinerary Changes Everything

The Cyclades form an archipelago of around 220 islands in the Aegean Sea — their name comes from the Greek word for « encircling islands », referring to the circle formed around the sacred island of Delos, the mythological birthplace of Apollo and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990. Of the three islands in this itinerary, two are diametrically different in their geological and cultural character.

Santorini is a volcanic caldera formed by the Minoan eruption of ~1628 BC — one of the most significant volcanic events in human history, which expelled 61 km³ of magma and buried the city of Akrotiri under ash. This volcanic soil gives its unique minerality to the Assyrtiko PDO wines, grown using the « kouloura » method (a basket-weave vine training unique to the world, lying low against the ground). Naxos, by contrast, is the largest of the Cyclades (430 km²), with Mount Zeus at 1,004 m and the Tragaia valley, inhabited since antiquity.

For the 2026 traveller, the Greek overtourism reform works in favour of private experiences: a cruise passenger who stays 6 hours on Santorini generates roughly three times less local economic value than a traveller who books a guided tour, rents a scooter and dines at a village restaurant. Booking in advance is no longer a luxury — it is the only way to experience the Cyclades authentically in high season.

This is my recommended starting point for Santorini: a 5-hour tour that departs from your accommodation at dawn, when Oia is still empty. The itinerary is adapted to your pace with photo stops that are worth the trip in themselves.

Ideal for couples and families who want Santorini without compromise.

  • 100% customisable itinerary on request
  • Expert local native guide, English-speaking
  • Access to lesser-known sites off the standard circuit

Santorini seen from the sea is a radically different experience from the terraces of Oia. Setting off from Vlychada beach, you paddle along black volcanic rock cliffs into sea caves that are inaccessible on foot — hollow spaces carved into the basalt by millennia of erosion. After the cave, the certified guide leads you to a snorkelling area with exceptional visibility. Seven hours of direct contact with the island’s volcanic character, at a reasonable price point.

  • Caldera views from sea level

4. Santorini Volcanic Wines: Winery Tour and Tasting

Santorini wine deserves proper attention. The « kouloura » vine-training method — a creeping basket shape lying close to the ground, unique in the world — is a centuries-old response to the Meltemi wind and volcanic drought. This 4-hour tour covers two or three estates, a guided tasting of Assyrtiko PDO (mineral, saline white) and Vinsanto (amber, concentrated dessert wine), with a sommelier guide who explains the terroir like nowhere else. The perfect complement to a morning of cultural sightseeing.

  • Kouloura vine training, a world-unique method
  • Guided tasting of 4-5 wines with an expert sommelier
  • Hotel transfer included, 2-3 estates visited

In the afternoon, the island is yours once the day-trippers have left.

From Kalantos beach, you paddle for 7 hours along the wild south coast of Naxos to reach this spectacular limestone formation accessible only by sea. Inside, free-diving reveals a translucent underwater world. The homemade lunch is served on an isolated beach where you will be the only visitors. This is what 95% of Naxos tourists never see.

Vallindras Distillery in Chalki, Naxos: kitron citron liqueur tasting and guided tour
Source: Viator

10. Vallindras Distillery: Kitron Citron Liqueur Tasting (Naxos)

Rated 5.0 (75 reviews) 1h From €65 Guided tour

Kitron is a citron liqueur distilled artisanally on Naxos since 1896 — and nowhere else in Greece. The Vallindras Distillery in Chalki, in the Tragaia valley, produces three variants by alcohol content (green, white, yellow) which you taste at the end of the 1-hour guided tour. This is not a modernised commercial operation: the original copper stills, the cobbled streets of Chalki village and the late-afternoon light make this the best Naxos souvenir to bring home. Easier to import than Santorini wine.

  • The only kitron distillery in the world, founded in 1896
  • Tasting of all three variants (green, white, yellow)
  • Picturesque Chalki village, Tragaia valley

Practical Tips for the Cyclades

Express ferry between the Greek Cyclades islands, blue Aegean Sea

Ferries: book on Ferryhopper (the official aggregator), ideally 2 to 4 weeks in advance in June-August. Seajets = fast (catamaran, 31 min Santorini-Mykonos, pricier, wind-sensitive), Blue Star = slow and stable (cheaper, with outdoor decks). In strong Meltemi wind, Seajets services are cancelled; Blue Star continues. Note: the Meltemi blows mainly in July-August.

Getting around the islands: on Naxos, rent a scooter or car to reach the Tragaia valley and Rina Cave. On Santorini, the public bus (KTEL) runs regularly and cheaply between Fira and Oia. On Mykonos, quad bikes and ATVs are handy for the south-coast beaches — budget €40-60/day.

When to go: May and September are the two ideal windows. June offers the most beautiful light with still-manageable crowds. July-August: heat of 35-38°C on Santorini, Oia packed 45 minutes before every sunset, ferries fully booked several days ahead.

Delos from Mykonos: the UNESCO archaeological site is closed on Mondays. Ferries depart from Mykonos Old Port, 30-minute crossing, allow at least half a day. No overnight accommodation is possible on the island.

Budget: inter-island ferries £65-100 (2-3 crossings). Viator activities £55-260 depending on experiences chosen. Accommodation: Santorini (caldera views) = £130-430/night, Naxos = £50-130/night.

Frequently Asked Questions about 3 Days in the Cyclades

What is the highest-rated experience in this Cyclades itinerary?

All the experiences in this itinerary are rated 5.0 on Viator. For a memorable first day, the 5-hour Santorini secrets guided tour (179 reviews, from €120) is the ideal starting point: early hotel departure, Oia and Imerovigli before the cruise ships, the caldera from the best viewpoints.

Can you do Santorini, Mykonos and Naxos in 3 days without a hire car?

Yes for Santorini (frequent KTEL buses between Fira and Oia, taxis available) and Mykonos (shuttle buses between the port and Chora). For Naxos, a scooter or hire car is strongly recommended if you plan to reach Rina Cave (south coast) or Chalki distillery (Tragaia valley). The Viator experiences for the Naxos day include a meeting point at Kalantos beach — check whether a local taxi can drop you there from Chora.

How do you avoid the cruise crowds on Santorini and Mykonos?

Cruise ships typically disembark from 10am and depart around 5-6pm. The effective strategy: book morning experiences (7am-9am departure) or evening ones. On Santorini, Akrotiri is best visited before 10am (golden light, bearable heat). On Mykonos, Little Venice and the Kato Mili windmills are most photogenic at sunrise. The 2026 Greek reform caps cruise ships at 8,000 passengers per day on Santorini — which remains high but is starting to reduce July-August flows.

Should you book ferries in advance for the Cyclades?

Yes, and it is critical in June-August: fast ferries (Seajets, catamaran) sell out several days in advance on the Santorini-Mykonos route. Book on Ferryhopper once your Viator activities are confirmed, ideally 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Tip: take the Blue Star (classic ferry) as a back-up for Naxos-Mykonos routes — cheaper, more stable in strong winds (Meltemi), and rarely fully booked.

What is kitron and where can you buy it?

Kitron is a citron liqueur distilled artisanally on Naxos since 1896 by the Vallindras Distillery in Chalki. It is the only kitron distillery in the world — the liqueur is unavailable outside Naxos and Greek airport duty-free shops. The one-hour guided tour includes a visit to the original copper stills and a tasting of all three variants: green (slightly sweet), white (medium strength), yellow (stronger). See the Vallindras kitron experience in the list.
