The eight Gamla Stan tours cost from €15 to €137 per adult for two travelers, rated 4.71 to 4.98 out of 5. The most-reviewed 2.5-hour walk (1,536 reviews) costs €19.90 per adult, with free cancellation. For a first visit, start with it; to eat, choose the food tour.

Gamla Stan fits into a single walk. A few cobbled lanes, a square where a dark page of Swedish history played out, a palace, colorful façades. The lanes can be covered on foot in under an hour, but the neighborhood makes more sense with someone telling you about its streets. That is why most of the tours bookable on Viator here are guided walks, with a few detours to the table, to the night or to the Vasa Museum.
The question I asked myself while preparing this article is simple: which tour is worth its price, for which kind of traveler, and on which date? To answer it, I kept eight experiences, all rated at least 4.7 out of 5. Six focus on the old town: four guided walks, the ghost walk and the food tour. The other two are broader, and I kept them for a specific reason. The classic small-group tour (card 7) is the highest-rated of the lineup and, according to its listing, passes the Royal Palace and Stortorget. The combination with the Vasa Museum (card 8) is the only one that leaves the island, by boat across to Djurgården. Seven of them have more than 100 reviews; the third, a small-group tour with an official guide, has 65. Each has its own card further down, with its price, duration and limits.
The most logical starting point is the two-and-a-half-hour walking tour of the old town. It is the most-reviewed listing in the selection, with 1,536 reviews and a 4.93 rating, and it ends on Stortorget, the square of the 1520 Stockholm Bloodbath.
Prices do not read like a price tag. They vary with the date, the size of the group and the age band. The prices in this article come from the check made on November 5, 2026, for two adults and a window running from November 19, 2026 to January 17, 2027. The table below sets them side by side, with the rating, the duration and the number of open days over the period.
All eight tours offer free cancellation according to the November 5, 2026 check, so you can book before fixing your day, provided you check the deadline on the listing. I do not claim to cover every tour in Stockholm: I only keep those that take place in Gamla Stan or actually pass through it. The three-hour small-group tour by Amitylux stays off the list: Gamla Stan is only one stop among others, and I place it in a box in the practical section.
Why Gamla Stan: the Pixidia angle
Gamla Stan, meaning « the old town », occupies the island of Stadsholmen, in the heart of the Swedish capital. It is Stockholm’s medieval historic center: narrow cobbled lanes, colorful façades, and the grand buildings of power and trade from the past. The Royal Palace, the Stortorget square and the Storkyrkan church are the most cited landmarks. Visit Stockholm describes the district as a compact ensemble of monuments and streets.
The thread running through most of the tours is a dated episode: the « Stockholm Bloodbath » of 1520. The executions took place on Stortorget, and the pages devoted to the square, on StoryHunt as well as on the Stockholm Museum site, detail it. Knowing this date helps explain why so many routes end on this square.
Several tours in the selection stop at Stortorget, which makes it the center of gravity of the neighborhood. The Nobel Museum is also there. No guided tour of it is selected in this article; it remains mentioned as a place to visit, with no affiliate link.

The neighborhood is also at the heart of the nighttime offer. Visit Stockholm presents the ghost walk as a recurring event in Gamla Stan. It is the only tour in the selection that is framed around legends rather than chronology.
It is also worth setting a few things straight. The Vasa Museum is not in Gamla Stan: it is on Djurgården, on another island. That is why the only tour in the selection that combines it with the old town includes a boat crossing.
The selection rule comes down to two criteria. First the perimeter: the old town and its surroundings, where most tours start less than five minutes from a station or a bridge. Two broader tours are exceptions to this perimeter, for the reasons given in the introduction. Then quality: a rating of at least 4.7 and at least 100 reviews, with one exception, a tour with 65 reviews admitted under the secondary threshold of 4.5 with at least 50 reviews.

The 8 best Gamla Stan tours

1. Old town walking tour, 2.5 hours with an expert guide
This is the tour I would book first, for a simple reason: it lasts two and a half hours, with an expert guide, and it covers the heart of the neighborhood, from the meeting point at Gustav Adolfs torg to Stortorget, where the walk ends. The start is easy to spot, since the guide carries a rainbow umbrella. The long format leaves time to understand why the streets are laid out the way they are, and why so many stories end on the same square. One point of caution: the supplier’s title contains « Free Walking Tour ». Do not assume the tour is free. The listing shows €19.90 per adult, and the information gathered does not say how the guide is paid. Ask before you book.
- Expert guide and local recommendations
- Start at Gustav Adolfs torg, easy to spot by the rainbow umbrella
- Last stop at Stortorget

2. Old town walking tour, 2 hours, the most affordable
If budget matters, this is the most affordable tour in the selection: €15 per adult for two hours on foot. The operator, a local provider active since 2015 according to its listing, meets you in front of Gamla stan metro station, on the old town side, which saves you looking for the starting point. The format is that of a guided group: you follow the guide, ask your questions and stop where the guide stops. The listing shows no admission included; budget separately if you want to go through the door of a church or a museum. It is one of the tours open on the 60 days checked. For a first look at Gamla Stan without spending more, it does the job, without claiming more.
- Professional local guide
- Start in front of Gamla stan metro station, old town side
- Open on the 60 days checked

3. Old town history in a small group, with an official guide
In my view, this is the most pleasant format for a first discovery: two hours with an official Stockholm guide, in English, in a small group. Its rating of 4.95 out of 5 comes second, behind the classic tour (4.98), but it rests on 65 reviews, the smallest sample in the selection. Read it with that caveat in mind, and compare it with the three-hour tours further down. The meeting point is at Mynttorget, near the lion statue, at the foot of Västerlånggatan. The listing says that all fees and taxes are included, and that tipping is not. Fewer dates are open than for the other tours: 44 days out of 60 in the window checked. If you want history more than a stroll, this is the closest match to what you are looking for.
- Official Stockholm guide, in English
- Small group, two hours
- Taxes included, tipping excluded according to the listing

4. Old town walk, 2 hours, start time to be confirmed
What sets it apart from card 2, which is also a two-hour walk: the supplier is Scandic Tours, with 125 reviews against 570, a rating of 4.78 against 4.75, and 57 open days out of 60 against 60 for card 2. The meeting point is at Munkbrohamnen, at the exit of Gamla stan metro station, not in front of the station. The listed price is €15.44 per adult, and the listing only includes the guide. The catch is the start time: according to the listing, the meeting is at 12:45. Confirm it before booking, as no other data gathered confirms it.
- Local guides to walk through the old town
- Start at the exit of Gamla stan metro station
- 12:45 start according to the listing, to be confirmed

5. Ghost walk and legends of Gamla Stan, 90 minutes
It is the most-reviewed tour in the selection after the first one, with 1,309 reviews and a rating of 4.71. It lasts 90 minutes with a local guide and focuses on the legends and history of Gamla Stan. The format suits the end of the day: it is a narrative reading of the neighborhood rather than a chronological one, ideal after a more classic walk on the same day. The meeting point is at Järntorget 84, near the Evert Taube statue. The listing is clear on one point: you must arrive on time, or the tour is missed, with no refund. Meals, drinks and transport to your hotel are not included. The price varies by age band, between €23.90 and €32.00 per adult on the November 5 check.
- Local guide, 90 minutes
- Legends and history of the old town
- Arrive on time, no refund if you are late

6. 3-hour food tour, seven Swedish tastings
It is the only tour in the selection devoted to the table, and the most expensive per adult: between €91.60 and €137.38 depending on the date checked. Three hours in a small group, seven tastings of classic Swedish dishes: princess cake, fried herring on knäckebröd, shrimp toast, cheese, creamy potatoes. The format lets you taste as you walk through the lanes, without looking for a table at random. The meeting point is at Kornhamnstorg, near the statue of the Bågspännaren, the archer. The guide is local; hotel pickup and return are not included. If you come to eat, this is the booking to make first, once you have compared dates: on the window checked, the price gap is the widest in the list, and Viator flags this listing as likely to sell out.
- Seven tastings of classic Swedish dishes
- Local guide, small group, 3 hours
- Hotel pickup and return not included

7. Classic 3-hour small-group tour, Royal Palace and Stortorget
It has the highest rating in the selection, 4.98 out of 5 from 186 reviews, and it is the most general tour. It covers Stockholm’s main landmarks, and Gamla Stan is among them: the Royal Palace and Stortorget are on the program, according to the listing. Three hours in a small group of ten people maximum, with an English-speaking guide in person: a good way to get your bearings before revisiting the neighborhood at your own pace. The meeting point is at Slussen, on the Södermalm side, near the escalators. If you are staying in the old town, factor in the journey there. Museum entrance fees are not included. It complements the two-hour walks rather than replacing them.
- Small group of ten people maximum
- English-speaking guide in person
- Museum entrance fees not included

8. Old town and Vasa Museum in 3 hours, with the boat crossing to Djurgården
It is the only tour in the selection that leaves the island: a boat crossing to Djurgården and entry to the Vasa Museum are included. The ship on display is on Djurgården, not in Gamla Stan. The tour lasts three hours in a small group and combines the old town with this museum, so you do not have to organize it yourself. The listing does not settle the meeting point: it says the guide waits in front of the Royal Opera, facing an equestrian statue, but its description mentions Gamla Stan station. Ask for confirmation before you come. If budget is the priority, the two-hour walk remains the cheapest way to see the old town alone.
- Boat crossing to Djurgården
- Vasa Museum entry included
- Meeting point to be confirmed
Preparing your trip
The metro is the most direct option: Gamla stan station is served by the green and red lines, between T-Centralen and Slussen. From the blue line, you have to change at T-Centralen.
In winter the days are short: around the solstice, Solarwatch gives about six hours of daylight, a rough figure to check for your date. Book daytime tours early in the afternoon, and the ghost walk for the end of the day.
Outside the list, a three-hour tour for ten people maximum, which widens the view to the whole city: Gamla Stan is only one stop among others. Useful if you want to place the neighborhood within Stockholm before walking it. November 5 check: €58 per adult (base 2 travelers), rated 4.90 out of 5 from 742 reviews, open 57 days out of 60.
Book my city tourPractical tips on site
Finding the meeting point
Do not rely only on a tour’s title: check the exact meeting point on the listing and arrive ten minutes before the stated time. For the tour combined with the Vasa Museum, the listing gives two different indications: the Royal Opera on one side, Gamla Stan station on the other. Ask for confirmation before the day, and keep the supplier’s number handy if the listing does not settle it.
Tipping, no set amount
Tipping is not mandatory in Sweden, but it is expected in some cases. At a restaurant, around 10% is common for good service. For a paid guided tour, around 10% is often quoted, without obligation. The small-group historical tour states that tipping is excluded from its price. The listing of the first tour shows a price of €19.90 per adult, and the information gathered does not say whether the guide expects a tip: ask before you book.
Payment
Bring a bank card, and a few Swedish kronor in cash for small purchases.

Light and short days
In November and December the days are short. Solarwatch and WeatherSpark describe a day of about six hours around the winter solstice. That is a rough figure: check the day you are targeting. A two-hour walk in late afternoon will often end after dark. For daytime tours, book early in the afternoon; for the ghost walk, the darkness is part of the experience.
Museums: prices, hours and closing days
The Nobel Museum is on Stortorget. Its official PDF for 2026 shows closures on December 24, 25 and 31, as well as on January 1. The adult price shown on the official site when we checked is 160 SEK, and hours are 11:00 to 18:00 in December: check before you travel. The Vasa Museum, on Djurgården, shows on its official page an adult standard price of 195 SEK and hours of 10:00 to 17:00 (Wednesdays until 20:00); check before you go.
The Christmas market
The dates of the 2026 Christmas market have not been verified: check them on the organizer’s site before planning a day around it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Thinking the Vasa Museum is on the island of Gamla Stan. It is on Djurgården, which is why the combined tour includes a crossing.
- Reading « Free Walking Tour » as « free » on a tour that shows a price.
- Booking without having checked the start time or meeting point when the listing contradicts itself.
- Building a day around the Christmas market before its dates are confirmed.
