The Gävle goat’s 2026 unveiling takes place on Sunday 29 November 2026 at 4:00 pm on Stortorget, with free entry. Standing 13 metres tall and erected since 1966, it has been burned or damaged 38 or 43 times, depending on the source. The direct train from Stockholm takes about 1 h 20 to 1 h 30.

Checked on against the cited sources (Visit Gävle, Wikipedia EN, TV4, Omio).

The Gävle goat turns 60 this year. Since 1 December 1966, this giant straw goat has stood in the centre of the Swedish city, about 160 km from Stockholm by road. It has been set alight many times, was knocked over by a storm in 2025, and the city puts it up again every year. Here is what you need to know about the ceremony, the goat’s history and the trip from the capital.

Inauguration 2026: date, place and what is still to be confirmed

Sunday 29 November 2026 4:00 pm Free entry Stortorget, Gävle

Visit Gävle, the city’s tourist office, has announced the ceremony for Sunday 29 November 2026 at 4:00 pm, on Stortorget. The date falls on the first Sunday of Advent, as the raising and ceremony do every season. The 60th anniversary gives this edition extra weight (official page for the 2026 unveiling, checked on 2 November 2026).

Watch out for a common trap: some festive programmes dated 30 November refer to 2025. 30 November 2025 was a Sunday, whereas 30 November 2026 is a Monday. The « Christmas begins in Gävle » programme listed for that date therefore belongs to the previous season.

Pixidia tip: the ceremony takes place on Stortorget, not on Slottstorget as some guides suggest. The exact spot is not confirmed in our sources at the time of checking.

Normally the goat stands on Slottstorget. In 2025 it was set up on Rådhusesplanaden (Rådhustorget) while a new culture centre was being built, according to Visit Gävle’s FAQ and SVT Gävleborg (27 November 2025). The 2026 stage programme had not been published at the time of checking. In 2025 the ceremony included cultural grants and the announcement of Gävle’s « Citizen of the Year ».

The full programme is therefore still to be confirmed on the tourist office’s website.

The tour below is for travellers who spend a night in Stockholm before or after Gävle. It takes place in Stockholm, about 160 km from the ceremony, not in Gävle. The catch: the train (about 1 h 20 to 1 h 30 according to Omio) comes on top of the tour, which lasts 2 hours according to Viator. When we checked on 2 November 2026, slots were open 7 days out of 8 between 29 November and 6 December.

1966-2025: the story of a goat that often went up in flames

An advertising idea that became a symbol

The idea dates back to 1966. According to Wikipedia (EN) and Visit Gävle, an advertising consultant wanted to draw shoppers to the south of the town centre and its shops. The first raising took place on 1 December 1966: the goat stood 13 metres tall, was about 7 metres wide and weighed around 3 tonnes. The sources disagree on who started the project, and this article does not name anyone.

Fires, a storm and a disputed count

According to TV4, the first fire hit the goat on Christmas Eve 1966, and again in 1970, just six hours after it went up. Fires kept coming back for decades. The sources do not count the attacks in the same way: Wikipedia (EN, updated 1 November 2026) lists 43 between 1966 and 2025, while TV4 counts 38 as of 27 December 2025. Both figures are quoted here with their source.

  • 1976: a car hits the goat (Wikipedia EN).
  • 2016: for the 50th anniversary, the municipality adds cameras, guards and a double fence. The goat burns a few hours after the unveiling, while a guard was away from his post (The Local, 2016).
  • 2021: fire in the night of 17 December. According to CTIF, the suspected arsonist, who lived in Kalmar, was arrested near the goat after being seen changing clothes inside the castle grounds.
  • 2023: jackdaws damage the structure (Wikipedia EN).
  • 2025: storm Johannes knocks the goat over on 27 December, and it is removed on 29 December.

Deliberate arson is a crime. In January 2022, Gävle district court sentenced the man who set fire to the goat in 2021, according to The Local. The press also describes a tradition of betting on the day the goat would go up in flames.

Why a straw goat? The Swedish julbock

The Gävle goat is the giant version of the julbock, the straw Christmas goat hung in Swedish homes during Advent. The character has changed over time. In folklore it was sometimes a threatening creature that demanded presents, before becoming a gift-giver. Men dressed up as the julbock and played pranks in the villages. The first written mentions of the Christmas tradition date from the 16th and 17th centuries (Swedish Finn Historical Society).

Hypothesis, not proven: a link with Thor and his chariot pulled by two goats is often put forward to explain the pagan origin of the custom. Mental Floss presents it as a possible source of inspiration (Mental Floss, 24 December 2017). That origin remains an interpretation, not an established fact.

The giant goat keeps the silhouette of the traditional julbock: a horned, bearded goat, often decorated with a red ribbon. In Gävle, the giant version has been 13 metres tall since it first went up on 1 December 1966.

Construction and security: how the goat stays up

The goat is assembled by hand from about 60 straw mats, each 5 metres long and 80 centimetres wide. The work takes around six weeks and involves about ten builders from the municipality, some of whom have worked on the goat for many years (Visit Gävle FAQ). It is transported in pieces by lorry.

Security was tightened after the fires of the 2010s. In 2017, the municipality’s spokesperson, Maria Wallberg, announced cameras, two security guards and a double fence, without detailing the rest of the set-up, which she described as « secret » (The Local, 4 December 2017). The 2021 fire happened anyway, despite the video surveillance.

The municipality’s webcam is the thing visitors follow most. In 2024 the city streamed the unveiling live online. In 2025 the webcam was watched by around 100,000 viewers in 120 countries, according to Visit Gävle. The 2025 unveiling was not streamed online, and whether the 2026 ceremony will be broadcast is not confirmed at the time of checking.

Getting from Stockholm to Gävle

The train is the simplest option. Direct SJ services between Stockholm C and Gävle C take about 1 h 20 to 1 h 27 according to Omio (Omio). If you land at Arlanda airport, aim for Arlanda Central station: some direct trains to Gävle stop there, while the other airport stations only have express services to Stockholm. Check the train number when you book.

We could not check the SJ fare, as the company’s page was empty when we looked. Prices change with the date and the time you book, so reserve on sj.se as soon as your dates are set. Bus and car are possible too, but they take longer.

Weather and light in December: pack for the cold

Weather aggregators give an average temperature of around -2 °C in December, with lows around -5 °C. Days are short: about 5 to 6 hours of daylight, with sunrise around 8:30 am and sunset between 2:30 and 3:30 pm (Allinmap). The Gävleborg region averages around 21 snowy days in December (Easeweather, which covers the wider Gävleborg region rather than the city alone).

Read with caution: the normals from the Swedish weather institute SMHI could not be consulted for this page. The figures above come from aggregators, not an official source.

For the 4:00 pm ceremony, the goat is seen outdoors, after dark. Bring a warm layer and shoes with good grip for the ground.

A weekend in Gävle around the ceremony

Visit Gävle suggests a sample weekend on a page with no explicit year, which probably refers to the 2025 edition (Christmas weekend page). Its spirit still helps when you plan your stay:

  • Saturday: visit the gingerbread house, a 1938 building where about 70 kg of dough is worked. The municipality treats it as a landmark of local Advent. In the evening, the town comes alive.
  • Sunday morning: walk along the Gavleån river, then head to Konditori Lido for the bockbakelse, a goat pastry served from the first Sunday of Advent.
  • Sunday at 4:00 pm: ceremony on Stortorget, free entry. Arrive early to get a spot: travellers’ accounts describe a quiet centre on weekdays and a busy one on unveiling day. The same accounts say the goat is smaller than in photos, and that it can be seen from far away (non-primary sources).
  • Other places: Gävle Castle and the old town (Gamla Gefle), mentioned by several guides.

Opening hours for 2026 of the gingerbread house, the Christmas market and the ice rink were not published at the time of checking. Confirm them with Visit Gävle.

What other guides don’t tell you

Several guides and research articles give information that no longer matches the sources. Here are four gaps, with their source and the date we checked.

  • The 2026 ceremony is on 29 November, not « early December ». Some guides say « early December » or « four weeks before Christmas ». The official page gives Sunday 29 November 2026 at 4:00 pm (Visit Gävle, checked on 2 November 2026).
  • The goat did not make it through the 2025 season. One guide claims it survived all the festivities. Storm Johannes knocked it over on 27 December 2025, and it was removed on 29 December (Wikipedia EN and TV4, checked on 2 November 2026).
  • Old fire counts are out of date. Older articles give 34, 37 or 39 attacks. Wikipedia (EN, updated 1 November 2026) lists 43, and TV4 38 (Wikipedia EN, checked on 2 November 2026).
  • The 2022 ruling is sometimes summed up as a « fine ». The Local reported in January 2022 six months in prison and compensation of 109,082 kronor to be paid to the municipality. A December 2022 article talks about a fine. We could not find the original ruling (The Local, 20 January 2022, checked on 2 November 2026).

Frequently asked questions

When is the Gävle goat unveiled in 2026?

The unveiling takes place on Sunday 29 November 2026 at 4:00 pm on Stortorget in Gävle, with free entry. The date is the first Sunday of Advent and the goat’s 60th anniversary, since it first went up on 1 December 1966. The stage programme had not been published when we checked on 2 November 2026. See the Visit Gävle page for up-to-date times.

Where is the Gävle goat?

Normally the goat stands on Slottstorget, in the centre of Gävle. In 2025 it was set up on Rådhusesplanaden (Rådhustorget) while a culture centre was being built. For 2026 the location is not confirmed. The ceremony itself takes place on Stortorget. Check the tourist office’s official page before you travel.

Does the Gävle goat burn every year?

No, but it has been burned or damaged on a very large number of occasions since 1966. Wikipedia (EN) records 43 attacks; TV4 counts 38. The last known fire dates from 2021. The 2025 fall was caused by storm Johannes, not by a fire. In 2024 a fake fire video circulated: SVT Gävleborg flagged it as fake (fact noted in Wikipedia EN, SVT not consulted directly). Security has been tightened since 2016.

Can you watch the goat live online?

Yes, the municipality runs a webcam. In 2025 it was watched by around 100,000 viewers in 120 countries, according to Visit Gävle. The 2025 unveiling was not streamed online. For 2026, a broadcast of the ceremony is not confirmed at the time of checking.

How long does the goat stay up?

The goat goes up on the first Sunday of Advent. For the 2025 season, removal was planned for 7 January 2026. Storm Johannes knocked it over on 27 December 2025, and it was removed on 29 December. For the 2026 season, the removal date is not confirmed at the time of checking.

How do you get from Stockholm to Gävle by train?

Direct SJ trains run from Stockholm C to Gävle C in about 1 h 20 to 1 h 30 according to comparison sites (Omio). Some stop at Arlanda Central. We could not check the fare because the SJ page was empty when we looked: book on sj.se and check the timetable on the day you travel.

What is the weather like in Gävle at the end of November and in December?

Weather aggregators give an average of around -2 °C in December, with lows near -5 °C. Daylight lasts only 5 to 6 hours. The normals from the Swedish weather institute SMHI could not be consulted, so these figures are not official. Dress very warmly for the 4:00 pm ceremony, which is held outdoors after dark.

Why is the goat made of straw?

It is inspired by the julbock, the straw Christmas goat of Swedish tradition, documented since the 16th and 17th centuries. The link with Thor and his goats is often put forward, but it remains an unproven hypothesis. The exact origin of the custom is therefore not established.

Can you be prosecuted for setting fire to the goat?

Yes. Setting fire to the goat is a crime. In January 2022, Gävle district court sentenced the man behind the fire of the night of 17 December 2021, according to The Local. The security set-up, with cameras, guards and a double fence, has been reinforced since 2016.
