4 July 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of American independence — the most spectacular milestone since the Bicentennial of 1976. In Washington, 860,000 fireworks in 40 minutes from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool (world record attempt). In Philadelphia, a free concert with Christina Aguilera and Will Smith on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. In Boston, the Boston Pops welcomes Lainey Wilson and Chance The Rapper at the Esplanade. Entry to fireworks, parades and main concerts is entirely free in all three cities — book accommodation and guided tours now, they sell out fast.
A 4th of July like no other comes just once every 250 years. On Saturday 4 July 2026, the United States celebrates its Semiquincentennial — a word as rare as the event it describes. Three founding cities are competing for the spotlight: Washington D.C., the federal capital and stage for the greatest fireworks display ever organised; Philadelphia, where Jefferson signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and where Pope Leo XIV receives the Liberty Medal in 2026; Boston, the « Cradle of Liberty », with the USS Constitution and the Boston Pops on the banks of the Charles River. This guide gives you everything you need to be there.
1. Washington D.C. — the fireworks of the century

Washington D.C. — 4 July 2026 programme
According to the Washington Post, 22 May 2026, the « Salute to America 250 » programme features 860,000 fireworks in 40 minutes — 50,000 more than the current world record set in the Philippines in 2016 (810,904). The shells will fire from both banks of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool at 9:09 pm, broadcast live on all national networks. This is the first time Independence Day has been given National Special Security Event (NSSE) status — the same level as a presidential inauguration. According to the NPS, between 1 and 1.5 million spectators are expected on the National Mall, up from 500,000–700,000 in ordinary years.
The day begins at 9:00 am with the solemn reading of the Declaration of Independence on the steps of the National Archives — a little-known moment for international visitors. At 11:45 am, the greatest Independence Day parade in US history moves along Constitution Avenue NW: floats representing all 56 states and territories, newly naturalised citizens on stage, university marching bands. Throughout the summer, the Great American State Fair (25 June–10 July, free entry) fills the Mall — stands from every state, costumed reenactors, rides at $5 per turn.
All 17 Smithsonian museums are free and air-conditioned — invaluable when the temperature hits 35 °C (95 °F). The National Museum of American History presents the exhibition « In Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness » with 250 historical objects, including Jefferson’s desk. The National Air and Space Museum (50th anniversary) reopens renovated for the occasion. According to WMATA, the Metro is free from 5:00 pm until close at 2:00 am.
Highlights
- 860,000 fireworks at 9:09 pm — world record attempt, 40 minutes non-stop from the Reflecting Pool
- National Independence Day Parade at 11:45 am, Constitution Avenue — the largest in American history
- Great American State Fair free (25 June–10 July) — all 56 states represented on the Mall
- 17 free Smithsonian museums + exhibition of 250 historical objects (NMAH)
- Free Metro from 5:00 pm — extended service until 2:00 am
2. Philadelphia — the birthplace of the nation

Philadelphia — Wawa Welcome America and the 250th
According to VisitPhilly.com, the Wawa Welcome America festival runs 16 days (19 June–4 July 2026) and is the largest national celebration in the country. On the evening of 4 July, the One Philly Unity Concert for America on Benjamin Franklin Parkway begins at 5:00 pm (gates open 3:00 pm): Christina Aguilera, Jill Scott, Will Smith, The Roots, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Seal, with Wanda Sykes as host. Entry is entirely free for 500,000 spectators. Fireworks launch at 11:45 pm from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. There will be six fireworks nights in total between 20 June and 4 July — an unprecedented record.
Note the dates carefully: the main parade, Salute to Independence, takes place on 3 July (not the 4th), departing from 5th & Chestnut Street, passing Independence Hall, heading up Market Street to Benjamin Franklin Parkway. 50 marching bands, 13 floats, 52 state Miss America ambassadors. According to July4thPhilly.com, it is the largest professional Semiquincentennial parade in the country.
Pope Leo XIV (the first American pope, elected May 2026) will receive the Liberty Medal in Philadelphia on 3 July — a historically unique event held at Independence Hall. According to the NPS, Independence Hall is free and open without a ticket on 4 July (and on 1, 2, 3 and 14 July). The Liberty Bell can be visited free from 9:00 am without booking. The Museum of the American Revolution offers « Declaration Days » from 1–5 July with the flagship exhibition « The Declaration’s Journey » (120+ artefacts).
Logistics note: on 4 July 2026, two unique events coincide — the concert on the Parkway and a FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match at 5:00 pm at Lincoln Financial Field (69,000 seats). Choose one or the other; logistics do not allow both on the same evening.
Highlights

- Independence Hall free entry without a ticket on 4 July — the room where Jefferson signed the Declaration
- Salute to Independence parade on 3 July: 50 marching bands, 13 floats, 52 Miss America ambassadors
- Liberty Medal presented to Pope Leo XIV on 3 July — a unique historic moment
- 6 nights of fireworks (20 June–4 July) + Museum of the American Revolution
3. Boston — the Cradle of Revolution

Boston — Harborfest, USS Constitution & Boston Pops
According to WBUR, 12 May 2026, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular 2026 welcomes for the first time three Grammy-winning artists in their Pops debut: Lainey Wilson (country), Chance The Rapper (hip-hop) and Trombone Shorty (New Orleans). The concert at the Hatch Memorial Shell starts at 7:00 pm and ends at 9:30 pm, with choreographed fireworks launched from Long Wharf at 9:15 pm. The State of Massachusetts has invested $6 million ($2.5M for the Boston Pops + $3.5M in cultural grants) to make this event the official MA250 signature. According to Mass.gov, 500,000 spectators are expected on the Esplanade and the Charles River banks.
The day starts at 10:00 am with the USS Constitution turnaround, the oldest warship still in active service in the US Navy (built in Boston in 1797). It departs from Charlestown Navy Yard and fires a 21-gun salute from Castle Island at 11:30 am — a ritual unchanged since the 19th century. At 9:00 am, the reading of the Declaration of Independence from the balcony of Old State House (206 Washington Street) continues a tradition dating to 18 July 1776, when Colonel Thomas Crafts first performed it.
The Freedom Trail — 2.8 miles linking 16 historic sites from Downtown to Charlestown — is the backbone of any Boston visit. 11 of the 16 sites are free. See also our guide to Boston and New England for a deeper dive into the region. A 2026 highlight: a revolutionary drone show will partially replace fireworks during the 1812 Overture opening — an innovation announced by the organisers.

4. The 250th: history, records and controversies

Semiquincentennial — 250 years of a nation debating itself
On 4 July 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson. Both Adams and Jefferson died on 4 July 1826 — the exact 50th anniversary. According to Wikipedia, the previous Bicentennial of 1976 drew 1–2 million people to Philadelphia and 14–20 million across the whole year. The 250th is designed to surpass it.
Two bodies coexist without always agreeing. The America250 Commission (created by Congress in 2016, nonpartisan, congressional budget of $150M of which only $25M has been received) oversees the institutional commemoration. The Freedom 250 Task Force (Trump executive order, January 2025) organises the big spectacular events — DC fireworks, Great American State Fair — but has been criticised for its politicisation and lack of financial transparency. For visitors on the ground: the experience itself is exceptional; the political backdrop is real but does not diminish the celebration.
A paradox worth noting. According to AFAR, international arrivals in April 2026 fell 14.1% versus 2025 (Canada: -20.9%, Germany: -11.3%). The ESTA price hike from $21 to $40 and the broader political climate in Europe and beyond are contributing factors. For determined international travellers, this paradox actually works in your favour: national monuments and free events are less saturated with tourists than usual.

In Philadelphia: 6 nights of fireworks, free concert with Will Smith and Christina Aguilera, the largest professional parade in history. In Boston: the Boston Pops with 3 Grammy winners for the first time. Sources: Freedom250.org, WBUR.

No. On 4 July 2026 (and on 1, 2, 3 and 14 July), Independence Hall is free and open without a ticket or reservation. On other days, a Recreation.gov ticket costing $1 (admin fee) with timed entry slots is required — bookable up to 30 days in advance. The NPS ranger-led tour lasts 20 minutes. Source: NPS.gov.
How do you get around Washington D.C. on 4 July?
The WMATA Metro is the only sensible way to travel: extended service from 6:00 am to 2:00 am, free from 5:00 pm. Avoid Smithsonian, Federal Triangle and L’Enfant Plaza stations after 10:00 pm (30–60 minute queues) — use Foggy Bottom, Archives or Judiciary Square instead. Driving is completely out of the question (massive road closures, no parking available). Capital Bikeshare operates all day. Source: WMATA.
Can you combine all three cities — Washington, Philadelphia, Boston — in one trip?
Yes, the Amtrak North-East Corridor (NEC) is perfect: Boston–Philadelphia in 1h30, Philadelphia–Washington in 1h30 on the Acela. Suggested 5-day itinerary: arrive in Boston on 2 July (USS Constitution + Harborfest), Boston Pops on the 4th evening, train to Philadelphia on the 5th (Liberty Bell, Independence Hall), then Washington on the 6th and 7th (Great American State Fair still running, Smithsonian). Do UK, Australian and EU visitors need a visa for the United States in 2026?
No, but an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is mandatory for all nationals of Visa Waiver Programme countries (including UK, Australia, Ireland, and most EU countries). Cost: $40 in 2026 (up from $21). Valid for 2 years, multiple entries. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov only, at least 72 hours before departure. Note: Canadian and Mexican citizens have separate entry requirements. Source: CBP.gov.
Where to watch DC fireworks without being in the National Mall crowds?
Several less crowded alternatives: Virginia-side terraces (Arlington), the Military Women’s Memorial (near the Lincoln Memorial, a lesser-known vantage point), Mall-view hotel rooftops (book months in advance — some sold packages as early as 2025), and Potomac River cruises (sold out 2–3 months ahead). The Mall remains the place for the authentic atmosphere — allow 30–45 minutes to exit via Metro after the fireworks. Source: Washington.org.
