The Lyon Festival of Lights 2026 runs from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December across the entire city. 32 light installations transform monuments into giant works of art. Entry is free, and the event draws 2 million visitors each year. I recommend booking a daytime activity (guided tour, tasting or wine-region excursion) to discover the real Lyon beyond the evening illuminations.

The Festival of Lights is that unique moment when Lyon transforms into an open-air gallery. The Renaissance facades of Vieux Lyon become canvases for spectacular video mapping, Parc de la Tete d’Or hosts drone ballets, and the Basilica of Fourviere shines like a lighthouse above the city. For four evenings (5-8 December 2026), two million visitors wander the streets, eyes raised toward the installations.

But Lyon is more than its illuminations. World capital of gastronomy (Curnonsky declared it in 1934 and no one has contested it since), a city of 500 traboules (hidden passageways), gateway to the vineyards of the Rhone Valley, Beaujolais and Burgundy: the daytime belongs to those who truly want to discover it. I have selected 10 Viator activities rated 5.0/5 to build a trip that alternates culture, flavours and landscapes before diving into the light each evening. The Northern Rhone Valley wine tour (59 reviews, 5.0/5) is my recommended starting point: it sets the wine-country scene before the nightly festivities.

Here is how to experience Lyon from both sides: the hidden city by day exploring its traboules and bouchons, the city of light by night beneath the Festival of Lights installations.

Lyon Festival of Lights 2026: 4 Days of Illuminations and 374 Years of History

The Festival of Lights traces its roots to a vow by Lyon’s aldermen in 1643: to pay homage to the Virgin Mary if the city was spared from the plague. Lyon was preserved, and since then, an annual procession lights candles at Fourviere. The modern turning point came in 1852: a gilded statue of the Virgin was to be inaugurated on 8 September, but bad weather pushed the event to 8 December. Another storm broke, then the sky cleared at nightfall. The people of Lyon spontaneously took to the streets, placing lit candles in their windows. That gesture became the Festival of Lights. The 2026 edition runs from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December (8 December being the historic evening). The full official programme will be published in early November by the City of Lyon at fetedeslumieres.lyon.fr. Meanwhile, the 2025 edition gives a good preview: 32 installations spread across the city, including the monumental projection mapping on Place des Terreaux (with the Pockemon Crew collective), a 500-drone ballet at Parc de la Tete d’Or, and giant luminous bouquets at Place Antonin Poncet. Each show runs 5 to 10 minutes and loops continuously at each site without fixed scheduling. Source: City of Lyon – Festival of Lights.

The tradition of lumignons (small candles in coloured glasses) remains intact: every 8 December, Lyonnais place candles in coloured glass holders on their windowsills. The charitable initiative « Les Lumignons du Coeur » sells candles for 2 EUR to benefit associations. The torchlit procession from the forecourt of Saint-Jean Cathedral up to the Basilica of Fourviere perpetuates the religious dimension of the event.

Practical Tips for Enjoying the Festival of Lights 2026

Passage under the arches of the Saone in Lyon, historic atmosphere of the city

Getting around during the festival. The Festival of Lights perimeter is entirely pedestrianised for all 4 evenings – cars, motorbikes, scooters, bicycles and e-scooters banned. Around 40 pedestrian entry points are spaced every 100 metres. TCL public transport (4 metro lines, 5 tram lines, buses) runs with enhanced service and a special « TCL en Fete » pass at 3.70 EUR per day. The « Famille1Jour » pass at 7 EUR allows groups of 2 to 5 people to travel at a reduced rate. Driving in Lyon during the festival is strongly discouraged: road closures, heavy traffic, very limited parking. Source: TCL – Lyon Public Transport.

When to arrive and suggested schedule. The shows are identical across all 4 evenings and run continuously. To avoid the longest queues (especially at Saint-Jean Cathedral and Place des Terreaux), favour weekdays (Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 December) over the weekend. A suggested sequence: Saturday 5 December – arrival and introductory walk through Lyon; Sunday 6 – a daytime Viator activity (the Beaujolais day trip or the Burgundy Land Rover tour) then illuminations in the evening; Monday 7 – pastry tour in the afternoon and light evening; Tuesday 8 – the final historic night with lumignons in windows.

Weather and what to pack. December in Lyon: temperatures range from 0 to 7 degrees Celsius, sometimes below freezing at night. Frequent rain. Pack: warm coat, hat, gloves, scarf, and most importantly comfortable waterproof shoes (cobblestones plus crowds plus possible rain). Umbrellas are allowed but awkward in crowds – prefer a waterproof hooded jacket.

Accommodation and booking. Hotels and Airbnb rentals fill up completely during the Festival of Lights, with prices rising 50 to 80 per cent. Book several months in advance. The Croix-Rousse area (village atmosphere), Villeurbanne and Caluire-et-Cuire (close to metro lines) offer better rates than Presqu’ile and Vieux Lyon, which are the most expensive and crowded.

Accessibility. The Festival of Lights is accessible to all. The French Mobility Inclusion Card (CMI) provides priority access and dedicated entrances. Helpers in fluorescent green vests at Parc de la Tete d’Or offer free wheelchair loan and accompanied visits.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Lyon Festival of Lights 2026

What are the exact dates of the Festival of Lights 2026?

The Festival of Lights 2026 runs from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December 2026 inclusive. 8 December is the traditional and historic evening. The installations are identical across all 4 evenings and run on a continuous loop (each installation lasts about 10 minutes). Entry is free and open to all. What is the best experience to book during the Festival of Lights?

The Northern Rhone Valley wine tour is the highest-rated experience in this selection (5.0/5, 59 reviews) – ideally placed on the first day to discover the region’s vineyards before the illuminations. For a more urban and budget-friendly experience, the Heroines of Lyon walking tour (20 EUR, 5.0/5, 41 reviews) offers a unique cultural angle through the slopes of Croix-Rousse.

How many visitors attend the Festival of Lights?

The Festival of Lights attracts between 2 and 4 million visitors each year depending on the source, spread across the 4 evenings. About a third of Lyon’s annual visitors come during this period. Crowds peak on Saturday evening and 8 December (the historic night). Weekdays are quieter (Monday and Tuesday).

What budget should I plan for a Festival of Lights weekend in Lyon?

For a 3-day weekend (Friday-Sunday), budget 300 to 600 EUR per person excluding accommodation: meals at a bouchon 25-40 EUR, Viator activities from 20 EUR (guided tour) to 230 EUR (full-day wine excursion), TCL transport 3.70 EUR/day. Hotels raise their prices by 50 to 80 per cent during the period – book as early as possible.

Should I book Viator activities in advance for the Festival of Lights?

Yes, especially for private tours like the Burgundy vintage Land Rover tour or the private gastronomic experience, which fill up 4 to 6 weeks before December. Classic guided tours (20-45 EUR) and food tours offer more flexibility, but booking at least 2-3 weeks ahead is recommended to guarantee availability and the best time slots, particularly for early-afternoon activities that leave the evening free for illuminations.
