New Year’s Eve 2026 in Barcelona falls on Thursday 31 December 2026. The countdown is announced at the Anella Olímpica according to municipal press reports, still to be confirmed. The 2026 times are not published: in 2025, the chimes rang between 11:50 pm and 12:10 am per the city, 12:15 am per Time Out. The metro ran for 43 hours in 2025.

Checked on against the official sources cited (barcelona.cat, TMB) and the press cited for the venue.

New Year’s Eve falls on a Thursday this year, and three points of the night are still open. The countdown venue is announced at the Anella Olímpica, but not confirmed. The 2026 times are not published, so the only reference is 2025. The metro ran non-stop in 2025, and no 2026 announcement had been found by 3 November 2026. For British readers, 1 January 2027 is a Friday and a bank holiday across the UK, which matters if you plan to fly out the day after. For a daytime plan before midnight, our article on the Sagrada Família in 2026 is another option.

1. The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc: winter times and open questions

Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

Espanya metro, L1 and L3 About 1 hour of show 6 to 14 °C at night Thu., Fri., Sat., 8:00 pm and 8:30 pm (City, undated)

The fountain was designed by Carles Buïgas for the 1929 International Exposition. It was switched off from November 2022 because of drought, for about three years, then reopened in September 2025 after its control, sound and lighting systems were renovated. The press puts the work at around €3 million. For winter, the City’s show times page lists performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and 8:30 pm, with maintenance from 1 to 15 November when no show takes place.

Two sources contradict that schedule. The Barcelona Urbana blog, published 21 September 2026, announces three evenings a week from 9 pm to 10 pm starting 1 October, with no session listed from 1 November. An undated City page on the Maria Cristina fountains also says some fountains are switched off to save water. Neither source settles how December 2026 will run. The only safe way to know is to check barcelona.cat the day before.

What to keep in mind

  • The regular show is on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and 8:30 pm, according to the undated City page; a blog from 21 September 2026 gives 9 pm to 10 pm.
  • No show from 1 to 15 November 2026: the annual maintenance is planned.
  • The December 2026 status is not confirmed.
Pixidia tip: don’t build your 31 December evening around the show without confirming it the day before. For the afternoon, a daytime visit to Montjuïc is the safest plan, since it doesn’t depend on the fountain.

2. New Year’s Eve 2026: the announced venue and what has changed

From Reina Maria Cristina avenue to the Anella Olímpica, announced and to be confirmed

For several years the City’s countdown has been held on Reina Maria Cristina avenue, in front of the Magic Fountain, with a stage, music, fireworks and often drones. In July 2026, Time Out Barcelona reported, citing municipal information, that works to transform the Fira site on Montjuïc were preventing large gatherings there. According to the same article, the New Year’s Eve chimes would move to the Anella Olímpica. betevé published the same information and links it to the works, which are due to intensify in 2027.

No official statement that we checked, from either the City of Barcelona or Fira de Barcelona, confirms the move as of this article’s date. Read it as « announced, to be confirmed ». No access route to the Anella Olímpica has been published yet, so the way in will need checking against the official venue.

Key point: guides that still recommend Reina Maria Cristina avenue for 2026 predate July 2026 or are undated. The City’s Nadal (Christmas) page is the most likely place for the official announcement.

3. What sources publish for 2026, and what is missing

The table below groups the dated information we could find on 3 November 2026. Rows marked « to be confirmed » should not be published as they stand without checking.

The 2026 times, not yet published

No source we checked gives the countdown time for 31 December 2026. The only official time available is for the 2025 edition: between 11:50 pm and 12:10 am according to the City’s New Year’s Eve bell ringing page, and 12:15 am according to Time Out (23 December 2025). Treat that time as a reference, not a promise for 2026. In practice, arrive early: guides advise getting there ahead of time to find a spot in the area chosen, which is still to be confirmed.

4. New Year’s Eve 2025 in numbers

A crowd of 115,000 people, under security

Barcelona City Council announced around 115,000 people gathered for New Year’s Eve 2025-2026, according to the figure relayed by Catalan News on 2 January 2026. It is the only recent figure we found, so read it as an order of magnitude. The 2025 edition combined fireworks, music and drones, according to Time Out (23 December 2025).

Security matters, and it shapes what you will see on the night. In 2024-2025 the City deployed the Guàrdia Urbana, the Mossos d’Esquadra, drones and access control between the Venetian Towers at Plaça d’Espanya. Time Out describes double-fenced perimeters and bag searches. Pack a light bag and leave bulky gear at the hotel.

Pixidia tip: the 2026 security arrangements had not been published as of 3 November 2026. The 2025 rules give an idea of what to expect, not a final list.

5. Night transport: metro, FGC, tram and Aerobús

Metro non-stop in 2025, nothing confirmed for 2026

In 2025, the metro ran without a break for 43 hours, from 5 am on 31 December to midnight on 1 January, on eight lines and 165 stations, according to Time Out, which cites TMB (30 December 2025). The format goes back to a TMB press release from December 2019. We found no TMB plan published for 31 December 2026 as of the date we checked.

Trams run through the night, and the FGC provide a non-stop service on lines S1, S2, L6, L7, L8 and L12, according to the City’s special public transport measures page for 2025. The bus network has no fixed night timetable: it is diverted from 7 pm or 8 pm.

  • The Aerobús runs 24 hours a day, with a night frequency of 10 to 20 minutes depending on the line (operator, checked on 3 November 2026).
  • After midnight, transport is packed: plan a way home, or stay in the neighbourhood.
  • A New Year’s taxi supplement of €6 was reported by the OCU at the end of 2025 in several cities, including Barcelona (relayed by Nació Digital); the 2026 amount is not published. Ask the driver for the amount before you get in.

6. The twelve grapes: tradition, origin and where to find them

One grape at each stroke of midnight

The custom is simple: eat one grape at each stroke of midnight, with cava, for luck in the year ahead. If you know the Big Ben chimes, the rhythm is the same: one stroke, one grape. 3Cat notes that some families use mandarin segments or raisins, and that other Catalan customs, such as wearing new red underwear or putting a ring in the cava glass, vary from family to family.

The origin is debated. The most widespread version dates the custom to the early 20th century, at the initiative of Valencian winegrowers. An older version places it in Madrid in 1882, as an ironic imitation of wealthy people who ate grapes with champagne. 3Cat presents both accounts as theories. We therefore attribute the custom to these origins without presenting them as established fact.

Where to find grapes in Barcelona

We found no published data on year-end grapes in Barcelona. The only figure we found is a Mercadona promotion from late December 2025, at national level: a pack of 12 seedless white grapes at €1.30. Check the shelf in person the day before.

7. Budget: dinner, hotel and paid extras

New Year’s Eve dinner: between €95 and €295

The prices we found for a New Year’s Eve dinner in Barcelona range from €95 to €295 per person. The two published 2026 prices are €195 incl. VAT at the NH Collection Barcelona Calderón, and €245 at the Grand Hyatt (package with accommodation). €295 is a 2025 price (Albarada), and €95 for a simpler venue is undated and still to be checked. Dinners book up well in advance, and hotels in Montjuïc and Poble-sec are reported to charge inflated rates for the night. The table below lists the prices we found, with their year and status.

Accommodation and tourist tax

We don’t have a dated record of hotel rates for the night of 31 December 2026, and the undated guides we read give estimates that ignore the season. On the tourist tax, one undated guide says it doubled from 1 April 2026; this needs checking with the Generalitat. Our comparison of tourist taxes in Europe 2026 has not been re-checked for this figure.

Alternative to confirm: Poble Espanyol

The official Poble Espanyol site announces a year-end party on 31 December 2026, with an evening that starts before midnight and runs into the small hours. The price shown is « 45 », currency not stated, still to be confirmed: nothing says whether it is a ticket, a package or a dinner. We don’t convert it into euros. Times and packages are not on the page as of 3 November 2026.

8. Weather on 31 December in Barcelona

Mild and dry most of the time

Based on the El Raval station’s history from 2007 to 2025, relayed by Weather on this day (a third-party source), daytime highs on 31 December are usually between 11 and 22 °C, and lows between 6 and 14 °C, with very little rain. Evenings stay cool: pack a jacket rather than an umbrella.

The December normal for AEMET station 0076, Barcelona Airport, over 1981-2010, gives an average of 10.0 °C and 40 mm of rain, according to AEMET data relayed by meteo365. That period is old, and it does not forecast 2026 weather: check the forecast in the three days before.

What other guides don’t tell you

Many guides repeat information from 2023 or 2024. Here are five points checked on 3 November 2026, with their source and date of consultation. Two points contradict each other across sources: the venue of the countdown and the winter fountain times.

  • The 2026 countdown venue is announced somewhere other than Reina Maria Cristina avenue. Guides that keep that venue are undated or predate July 2026. Time Out cites municipal sources, and we have not found an official statement to date. Time Out Barcelona (published 14 July 2026, checked 3 November 2026).
  • The Magic Fountain’s winter times conflict across sources. The City’s page gives 8:00 pm and 8:30 pm, Thursday to Saturday; the Barcelona Urbana blog, dated 21 September 2026, gives 9 pm to 10 pm. barcelona.cat (undated page, checked 3 November 2026).
  • The metro ran non-stop for 43 hours in 2025. The service ran from 5 am on 31 December to midnight on 1 January. Time Out, 30 December 2025, citing TMB.
  • The origin of the twelve grapes is a theory, not a fact. The 1882 Madrid origin is only one of the versions in circulation, and 3Cat presents it as a theory. 3Cat, 31 December 2025.
  • The Magic Fountain was switched off for almost three years (November 2022 to September 2025). City notice of 9 December 2024, and Nació Digital, September 2025.

Practical info: the Magic Fountain and how to get there (2026 venue not confirmed)

Address and access to the Magic Fountain

The fountain is at Plaça de Carles Buïgas 1, 08038 Barcelona. Access is by metro L1 and L3 to Espanya, by FGC and by the tourist bus, according to the City’s fountain page. From Espanya station, the accessible entrance on the Les Arenes side, with a lift to the platform towards Bellvitge, has been in service since 14 March 2023, according to TMB.

On foot from Plaça d’Espanya

Reina Maria Cristina avenue links Plaça d’Espanya to the Palau Nacional and the fountain. We have no data on its gradient or on traffic restrictions for 31 December. The Montjuïc funicular had a documented timetable of 7:30 am to 8 pm until 29 March 2026: don’t count on it for the night.

Bags and checks

In 2025, the festival areas were closed off by a double fence, with bag searches at the entrance, according to Time Out. A small, light bag saves queuing.
