Pohoda Festival 2026 runs from 8 to 11 July at Trenčín Airport, Slovakia. For its 30th anniversary, this multi-arts festival hosts The Cure, Gorillaz, Lykke Li and The Prodigy across 16 stages. The initial 30,000 tickets are sold out; official resale is via TicketSwap. Trenčín is simultaneously the 2026 European Capital of Culture — well worth extending your trip for.

Thirty years after its debut in a municipal stadium in Trenčín with a few hundred curious onlookers, Pohoda Festival has cemented its place as one of the most singular music events in Central Europe. In 2026, it marks that milestone with an unprecedented edition: four days (8–11 July), a brand-new fourth day curated entirely by Robert Smith of The Cure, and headliners that will go down in history. Gorillaz, The Prodigy, Lykke Li, IDLES — all of it on the concrete runway of a decommissioned military airport, framed by the hills of western Slovakia. A festival The Independent has compared to « somewhere between Latitude and Glastonbury, with a joyful ease that few European events can match. »

Born in 1997, designed as an invitation

8–11 July 2026 Trenčín Airport, SK ~33,000 festival-goers/day Best medium-sized festival Europe 2023

Founded on 29 June 1997 by musicians Michal Kaščák and Mário Michna, Pohoda started out at Trenčín’s municipal stadium in front of around 2,000 curious locals — only 140 of whom had paid for a ticket. The name means « well-being » or « serenity » in Slovak and Czech, and sums up the founders’ philosophy: treat festival-goers as guests, not consumers. According to the official festival website, the event relocated to Trenčín’s decommissioned military airport in 2004 — a decision that changed everything.

Twenty years of growth later, Pohoda draws 30,000 visitors a day across 16 stages with more than 130 artists from 25 countries. Its lineup blends alternative rock, electronic, world music, jazz, theatre, film, literature and civic debates in a format Music Festival Wizard has called a « garden party. » Pohoda has no VIP area — that’s a founding principle, and every ticket gives access to the same spaces.

Highlights

  • Best medium-sized festival in Europe — European Festival Awards 2023
  • Zero VIP area: total equality between festival-goers
  • EFA Green Operations Award 2017 for its ecological commitments (compostable tableware, reusable cups, mobile solar station)
  • Multi-arts programme: concerts, theatre, film, workshops, NGO zone, Family Park
Pixidia tip: If you’re after the atmosphere of a major European festival without the downsides of 100,000-person events — queues, inflated prices, impersonal crowds — Pohoda is your answer. The airport runway also means smooth circulation even after rain.

Four days, four worlds

130+ artists 16 stages 25+ countries represented 4 headliners

For its 30th anniversary, Pohoda adds a fourth day — a first in its history. According to the official festival announcement, Robert Smith personally curated the entire opening Wednesday programme, making this Extra Day an event within an event — The Cure’s first-ever show in Slovakia.

Wednesday 8 July — Extra Day curated by Robert Smith: The Cure headline, joined by The Twilight Sad, Just Mustard and Hiroko Yamamura. An afterparty closes out the night.

Thursday 9 July — Gorillaz, first time in Slovakia: According to pohodafestival.sk, Gorillaz present their album The Mountain (released 30 March 2026). Their collaboration with IDLES on « The God of Lying » may well be performed as a live duo on the main stage — potentially a world first. IDLES, Baxter Dury, SOFT PLAY and Emma-Jean Thackray round out the evening.

Friday 10 July — Lykke Li, third time lucky: The Swedish artist was cancelled in 2019 (missed flight) and in 2020 (COVID). Denzel Curry, Action Bronson, Kae Tempest, Aldous Harding, Fanfare Ciocărlia and the Kalush Orchestra (Eurovision 2022 winners, Ukraine) are also on the bill.

Saturday 11 July — The Prodigy, midnight, Zlatý Bažant stage: According to the festival, this is their third appearance at Pohoda (after 2005 and 2016). A tribute to Keith Flint is expected. Oliver Tree, Hildur Guðnadóttir and Emilíana Torrini share the billing.

Highlights

  • The Cure: first time in Slovakia, Extra Day entirely curated by Robert Smith
  • Gorillaz × IDLES: potential live performance of « The God of Lying » as a duo on the main stage
  • Multi-cultural programme: Kalush Orchestra (Ukraine), Fanfare Ciocărlia (Romania), Hildur Guðnadóttir (Iceland)
  • Albatros Family Park: full children’s programme running in parallel (workshops, theatre, concerts)
Pixidia tip: Download the official Pohoda app (iOS/Android) as soon as you arrive to check real-time schedules across all 16 stages. Clashes are inevitable — plan your priorities before you get there.

5. Getting to Pohoda from the UK

The smart hub: Vienna over Bratislava

London → Vienna from ~£78 return Vienna → Bratislava: 56 min Bratislava → Trenčín: 1h 22min Station shuttle → festival: €1.50

The best route from the UK is a direct flight from London Gatwick or Heathrow to Vienna (VIE) — British Airways, easyJet and Jet2 all fly this route, with return fares from around £78 when booked ahead. The flight is under 2 hours 20 minutes. From Vienna, take the REX train to Bratislava (56 minutes, ~€12 via ÖBB/ZSSK), then a ZSSK service to Trenčín (1h 22min, €6–11). Festival special trains run on Thursday and Friday with extra carriages (Bratislava → Trenčín return = €9.90). The shuttle from Trenčín station to the festival entrance costs €1.50.

According to Pohoda’s official transport guide, Slovak Lines coaches also serve the festival from 8 cities: Bratislava, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Trnava, Nitra, Piešťany, Prievidza and Zvolen (Thursday afternoon and Friday morning departures).

By car from Bratislava: 132 km (~1h 15min). From Vienna: ~175 km (~1h 30min–2h). Check out Pixidia’s personalised itineraries if you want to build a wider Central Europe trip around the festival.

Highlights

  • On-site car parks P1–P5 (100–700m from the entrance), overnight stays permitted
  • Carpooling encouraged via the official hashtag #spolunapohodu
  • Electric vehicle charging points available on site
Pixidia tip: Book your London–Vienna flights at least 2–3 months ahead for July 2026 — prices climb sharply as the festival approaches. Vienna (VIE) is a far better hub than Bratislava (BTS) for UK travellers, with more direct services and a reliable onward rail connection.

6. Trenčín in 2026: European Capital of Culture, not to be missed

The castle, the festival and the European Capital of Culture

11th-century castle (~€11) European Capital of Culture 2026 Teplice spa 7 km away 55,000 inhabitants

A city of 55,000 in the Váh valley, Trenčín holds the title of 2026 European Capital of Culture — the first Slovak city to receive it in 13 years. According to trencin2026.eu, a summer programme of more than 100 events transforms the city from June to September: concerts, international exhibitions, theatre, film and free « Musical Sundays. »

The must-see is Trenčiansky hrad castle, an 11th-century fortress perched on a limestone rock. According to visit.trencin.sk, adult admission is around €10–12, with English-guided tours available on advance booking ([email protected], minimum 5 days’ notice). One remarkable detail: a Roman inscription from 179 AD is carved directly into the rock — evidence of Marcus Aurelius’s legions defeating the Quadi tribe.

Seven kilometres from the festival, Trenčianske Teplice spa (sulphur springs since 1247, including the famous 1888 Hammam Sina) offers perfect recovery between festival days. For day trips, the castles of Beckov (25 km) and Bojnice (50 km) are both easily reached from Trenčín.

Highlights

  • Trenčiansky hrad: 90-minute visit, ticket valid for 10 days across all Trenčín Museum branches
  • Cost of living in Slovakia is around 24% lower than in the UK (restaurants roughly 38% cheaper)
  • Local food: bryndzové halušky (sheep’s cheese gnocchi), pirohy, kapustnica — hearty and affordable
  • Currency: euro (€) — no need to exchange pounds at the festival site
Pixidia tip: Book your accommodation in Trenčín as early as possible — the city is the European Capital of Culture and availability in July is extremely tight with Pohoda in town. Bratislava makes a solid fallback base (1h 22min by train).

7. Safety, weather and environmental commitment

Lessons from 2024, reinforced protocols for 2026

EFA Green Award 2017 Solar power since 2016 24/7 weather monitoring Umbrellas banned

The night of 12 July 2024 left a lasting mark on Pohoda: according to NME, a violent storm brought down the Arena stage tent, injuring 29 people. The festival was cancelled on the spot. A criminal investigation was launched by Slovak police, and a fundraising campaign raised over €140,000.

For 2026, the infrastructure has been overhauled: a redesigned main-stage area, an expanded covered stage, and a professional weather monitoring system run by Meteoservis from the airport control tower, issuing alerts twice daily. An emergency family shelter has been set up in the same tower.

On the environmental side, Pohoda is regarded as a European benchmark according to its environmental policy: mobile solar station since 2016, compostable tableware since 2017, 500+ recycling containers, reusable cups (€2 deposit, refundable), water-saving vacuum toilets, and merchandise in GOTS-certified organic cotton made in Portugal using renewable energy.

Highlights

  • 4 fixed medical posts, harm-reduction services, on-site vet (festival is pet-friendly)
  • Accessibility: paved surfaces, ramps, dedicated P0 car park, « Vozickar.info » team, reserved spots in front of stages
  • Free drinking water available across the entire site
Important: Umbrellas are strictly prohibited on site for safety reasons. Pack a lightweight rain poncho. If a weather alert is issued, follow the safety team’s instructions and head to the family emergency shelter in the control tower.
