The Tollwood Winterfestival 2026 runs from 24 November to 23 December 2026 on the Theresienwiese in Munich. Entry to the site is free, but the Grand Chapiteau shows and the New Year’s Eve party on 31 December from 7 pm are paid. Take the U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese station.
Checked on against the official sources cited (City of Munich, MVV) and the in-muenchen listing.
Every winter, the Tollwood takes over the Theresienwiese, the Oktoberfest grounds, and turns Advent into a month of circus, debates, concerts and mostly organic food. It isn’t a Christmas market in the strict sense: no rows of wooden chalets, no old town square, just a cultural programme that runs for a month. Here’s what the official sources say for 2026, what a day costs, how to get there and what to know before you go.
An alternative Christmas market, and first of all a festival

Tollwood at a glance
The festival describes itself as cultural and ecological. On the ground, that means the Marché des idées (the Ideas Market: crafts, designers, organic and fair-trade products), the Grand Chapiteau for circus and dance, debates on Monday evenings, food tents, a tent bar with live concerts (the Hexenkessel) and, for New Year’s Eve, the Harry Klein club.
What sets it apart from a classic Christmas market comes down to three things. The programme is cultural first. Entry is free for most of it. The mood is younger and more international. The trade-off: the site is open air, it gets cold, and the zones are a long walk apart.
- Free entry to the site and to the Ideas Market
- Shows under the big top, bookable on München Ticket
- New Year’s Eve party on a separate ticket, 31 December
If you also want to see the city-centre Christmas markets, a guided walk of 3 to 4 hours, in English, leaves from exit C of Marienplatz metro station. It takes in the courtyard of the Residenz and the Christmas village at the Old Castle, then ends on the Oktoberfest grounds. It doesn’t mention the festival: nothing says the ticket covers the shows or the stalls, and the metro fare isn’t included. On 7 November 2026, the Viator calendar showed open slots on all 30 days of the festival window, from 24 November to 23 December, and we checked the price on six dates.
Dates and opening times for 2026, read before you go
The festival runs for a month, from 24 November to 23 December 2026. New Year’s Eve falls outside that window: the party is on 31 December, from 7 pm. Opening hours for the Ideas Market differ between weekdays and weekends, and some guides quote times from an earlier edition.

The Ideas Market closes at 10 pm on 23 December, the last day of the festival. To avoid the crowds, come on a weekday from 2 pm and skip Saturday afternoons.
The Grand Chapiteau: three circus and dance productions
The Grand Chapiteau hosts the paid shows at the Tollwood. The City of Munich and the in-muenchen listing both announce three productions for 2026. They run in three blocks, each with a first performance at 7:30 pm.
| Production | 2026 dates | First performance |
|---|---|---|
| Ten Thousand Hours (Gravity & Other Myths, Australia) | 25 to 29 November | 25 November at 7:30 pm |
| Triptych (Lewis Major Productions) | 2 to 9 December | 2 December at 7:30 pm, German premiere according to the city |

The 2026 ticket prices weren’t shown on the pages we checked. For reference, the 2024 edition had three price bands at €59, €49 and €39, with reduced rates. Those are last year’s figures, so don’t take them as 2026 prices.
The Monday evening debates
Every Monday at 8 pm, the Grand Chapiteau hosts a debate. The titles are in German. The announced line-up:
- 30 November: Luisa Neubauer, « Was wäre, wenn wir mutig sind? »
- 7 December: Uli Kunz, « Planet MEER – Terra X live »
- 14 December: Sven Plöger and Uta Eser, « Klima. Wandel. Werte. »
- 21 December: Robert Habeck, « Wenn das Eis schmilzt »
Tickets, New Year’s Eve and the MVV travel card
Show tickets are sold on München Ticket. They also work as an MVV travel pass on the day of the performance, so you don’t need to buy a separate ride. Most guides don’t mention this, and it changes the budget for an evening out. A day ticket for MVV only needs buying on days without a show.
New Year’s Eve, 31 December, features Ezé, Botticelli Baby, Jamaram meets Jahcoustix, Falschgeld and The Jokers Band. The Harry Klein club has DJ Karotte, VJ Sicovaja, the Lovers Lipsync Battle and Fliegende Haie, while the Hexenkessel hosts DJ Dirk Wagner. There’s a midnight waltz on the Theresienwiese. One local listing shows €38.50 for the evening, with no date given for that price, so check the ticket office before you book.
For transport, the MVV fares before and after 1 January 2027 are in the table below. For a trip in December 2026, the left-hand column applies.
| Ticket | Price until 31 December 2026 | Price from 1 January 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Kurzstrecke (short trip) | €2.10 | €2.10 (unchanged) |
| Single day ticket, zone M | €10.10 | €10.80 |
| Group day ticket, zones M-5 | €32.60 | €33.90 |
| Children’s day ticket | €3.80 | €3.80 (unchanged) |
| Single child fare | €2.00 | €2.10 |

Getting there from the city centre
The festival is on the Theresienwiese, 80336 Munich, the Oktoberfest grounds. The simplest option is the metro: Theresienwiese station is served by the U4 and U5. The organiser’s access page, found through a search, also recommends bus 134 and the S-Bahn lines S1 to S8.
From the UK, flying is the quickest way in: London Heathrow to Munich takes around two hours in the air, and direct flights run frequently. By train, you change in Paris or Brussels, and the full journey takes most of a day. These are typical durations from travel sites, not live timetables, so check bahn.de or the Eurostar site before you book.
The city says there are lifts at Theresienwiese station. They can be out of order, so check network disruptions before you travel, especially with a pushchair or wheelchair.
The Theresienwiese is reserved for the festival, and there’s no bus parking on site. For a group arriving by coach, the organiser’s page points to a stop on Hansastraße.

The Ideas Market, food and children
The Ideas Market
The Ideas Market brings together crafts, designers, organic and fair-trade products, and stalls run by campaign groups. Entry is free, and the opening hours are in the table above. It’s the closest thing here to a traditional Christmas market, although the feel is a crafts fair rather than a row of chalets.
Food and drink
Guides describe mostly organic and vegetarian food, with world cuisines depending on the stall: Turkish, Asian, Latin American or Bavarian. Mulled wine (Glühwein) and Feuerzangenbowle, a flaming punch, are the headline drinks. One guide also mentions a vegetarian and vegan tent, the EssZimmer, but which edition that refers to still needs confirming.
Food prices for 2026 weren’t checked. Mulled wine prices have been criticised in the local press, but the article we read isn’t dated, so treat it as a complaint, not a price.
Children
Earlier editions had a free Kinderzelt with craft workshops, aimed at children aged 4 to 12. One thing to watch: in 2024 it only opened Monday to Friday, and groups had to book in advance. That’s how it worked before, so it doesn’t tell us about 2026, but it’s the first thing to check if you’re coming with kids at the weekend. The 2026 children’s programme wasn’t published when we looked, on 7 November 2026. Check the organiser’s site before you come with young children.
A typical day and the budget
For a weekday, the simplest plan has three parts. Arrive in the early afternoon, when the Ideas Market has just opened (from 2 pm on weekdays), which is the time the guides recommend to avoid the crowds. Eat there, then keep the evening for a show or a debate. On Mondays, the debate starts at 8 pm, and the Grand Chapiteau shows start at 7:30 pm on opening nights.
On budget, here are the costs to plan for. The amounts come from sources checked on 7 November 2026, and the costs we couldn’t find are flagged.
- Entry to the site and the Ideas Market: €0.
- Metro: a single day ticket, zone M, at €10.10 per person for a day without a show, at the fare in force until 31 December 2026. On a show night, the Grand Chapiteau ticket doubles as your travel pass (see the tickets section).
- Grand Chapiteau show: 2026 prices to check on München Ticket. 2024 reference: €39 to €59 depending on the category.
- Food and mulled wine: not checked for 2026. Mulled wine is the one to watch.
- New Year’s Eve party: €38.50 shown on a local listing, date of the price not given.
Summary. We can’t calculate a total from the sources, because food and mulled wine weren’t checked for 2026. For a day without a show, entry is free and transport costs €10.10 per person. An evening with a show adds €39 to €59 per person depending on the category, using the 2024 prices as a guide, and a local listing shows €38.50 for the New Year’s Eve party. Factor in transport, the ticket if you’re coming for the circus, and food on site.
Tollwood or the Marienplatz market?
Tollwood and the Marienplatz market serve different needs. The table compares them on the criteria the sources let us check. Marienplatz’s 2026 dates aren’t included here: the city’s official PDF couldn’t be opened, and the guides disagree.
| Criterion | Tollwood (Theresienwiese) | Marienplatz market |
|---|---|---|
| Access | U4 or U5, Theresienwiese station | City centre, served by the U and S lines |
| Crowds | Heavy in the evenings and at weekends | Very heavy, especially on Saturday afternoons |
| Food | Organic, international and vegetarian | Traditional, with mulled wine |
| Who it suits | Families, young people, culture fans | Tourists and families |
| Entry | Free on site, paid shows | Free |

If you’re after chalet-style stalls, Marienplatz is the pick. For a Christmas that mixes market, circus and debate, Tollwood stands apart. To compare with other cities, our Leipzig Christmas market 2026 and Paris Christmas markets 2026 guides have their own pages.
What other guides don’t tell you
Several guides repeat information from the 2025 edition, or give none at all. Here are three points checked on the City of Munich and in-muenchen pages. The MVV rules and the 2027 price rise are covered in the tickets section.
- The 2026 dates aren’t the 2025 dates. Some listings still show the 2025 edition, which ended on 31 December according to Stripes Europe. The city announces 2026 ending on 23 December, with New Year’s Eve on 31 December from 7 pm. City of Munich, Tollwood Winterfestival 2026 (checked 7 November 2026).
- The Grand Chapiteau programme has changed. Guides mention the 2025 productions (Circa, Circo Zoe, 7 Fingers). For 2026, the city announces Ten Thousand Hours, Triptych and Mad in Finland. in-muenchen, Tollwood Winter listing (checked 7 November 2026).
- The Monday debates get little coverage. Four debates at 8 pm, from 30 November to 21 December, with speakers such as Luisa Neubauer and Robert Habeck. in-muenchen, Tollwood Winter listing (checked 7 November 2026).
Practical info before you go
British passport holders don’t need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and must still be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The gov.uk Germany page doesn’t mention ETIAS, the planned EU travel authorisation, so check gov.uk again before you book.
Grand Chapiteau shows are booked in advance on München Ticket. The 2026 prices weren’t shown on the pages we checked, so check them on the ticket site.
Some guides advise bringing cash to the site. This hasn’t been confirmed for the 2026 edition.
Detailed accessibility information for the winter Tollwood is scarce. The city says the station has lifts, but they can be out of service.
Frequently asked questions about Tollwood 2026
When is Tollwood 2026 in Munich?
The Tollwood Winterfestival 2026 runs from 24 November to 23 December 2026 on the Theresienwiese. New Year’s Eve is separate: the party is on 31 December from 7 pm. These dates come from the City of Munich, checked on 7 November 2026. Some listings still show the 2025 dates, so ignore those.
Is Tollwood free?
Entry to the site and to the Ideas Market is free. The city says more than 90 % of cultural events are free. The Grand Chapiteau shows are paid on München Ticket, and so is the New Year’s Eve party. One local listing shows €38.50 for that party, with no date given for the price, so check it before you go.
Do I need to book for the shows?
Yes. Grand Chapiteau tickets are sold on München Ticket, and it’s wise to book before you travel. They also work as your travel pass on the day of the performance (see the tickets section). The 2026 prices weren’t shown on the pages we checked, so check them directly on the ticket site.
Is there a New Year’s Eve party at Tollwood?
Yes, on Thursday 31 December 2026, from 7 pm, with music at 7:30 pm and a midnight waltz on the Theresienwiese. The line-up includes Ezé, Botticelli Baby, Jamaram meets Jahcoustix, Falschgeld and The Jokers Band, with DJs at the Harry Klein club and the Hexenkessel. It’s a paid evening.
How do I get to Tollwood from the city centre?
The simplest way is the metro: take the U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese station, which serves the site. The organiser also recommends bus 134 and S-Bahn lines S1 to S8. The city says there are lifts at the station, but they can be out of order, so check network disruptions before you travel.
Is Tollwood suitable for children?
Earlier editions had a free Kinderzelt with craft workshops, aimed at children aged 4 to 12. In 2024 it only opened Monday to Friday, and groups had to book ahead, which is a problem if you’re coming at the weekend. The 2026 children’s programme wasn’t published when we checked on 7 November 2026. Bring something to keep warm too, since the site is open air.
What’s the difference with the Marienplatz market?
Tollwood is more cultural: circus, debates, concerts, and a younger crowd. It focuses on organic food, crafts and international cuisine. Marienplatz is the traditional market, with chalets, and guides describe it as the busiest. At Tollwood, entry to the site is free, apart from the paid shows.
When should I go to Tollwood to avoid the crowds?
Local guides recommend weekdays in the early afternoon, when the Ideas Market opens at 2 pm. Avoid Saturday afternoons and the last week before Christmas, which are busier. Evenings with a show and weekends are also very crowded.
