Venice is putting on New Year’s Eve, the night of 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027, with three strands: the concert at Teatro La Fenice, midnight fireworks and a street party, which was held in Mestre last year. Only the concert has a published programme for this night. The fireworks and the party follow previous editions, and their 2026-2027 programme has not been published. This article separates what is confirmed, what is carried over from the 2025-2026 edition and what remains unknown. It also explains the name of the celebration, which causes confusion, and the rules that applied last year.
1. The New Year’s concert at Teatro La Fenice
The La Fenice concert, an afternoon date
The Teatro La Fenice has four New Year’s concerts for the 2026-2027 season: Tuesday 29 December at 8:00 pm, Wednesday 30 at 5:00 pm, Thursday 31 at 4:00 pm and Friday 1 January 2027 at 11:15 am, according to its official page, checked on 3 November 2026. The 31 December concert therefore takes place in the late afternoon, well before midnight, the hour of the previous edition’s fireworks.
The announced conductor is Gianandrea Noseda, and the chorus master is Elena Pierini. The detailed programme and the soloists do not appear on this page: don’t take them for granted before the theatre publishes them.

The Viator card below is a separate offer. It does not give access to the La Fenice concert. The programme announced by Viator (Vivaldi, Mozart) is performed at the Palazzo Zaguri. The 31 December slots were full at 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm; only 1 January at 8:30 pm was open when availability was checked on 3 November 2026. 2. Capodanno 2026 or 2027: the name that causes confusion
The night of 31 December 2026, called « Capodanno 2027 » by the press
The pages of the Commune and of Venezia Unica that were consulted call the celebration of the night of 31 December 2025 to 1 January 2026 « Capodanno 2026 ». By the same logic, the following night appears as « Capodanno 2027 » in the local press: VeneziaToday uses it for the Jesolo party. No official text defines this naming. It is an observed convention, and it should be treated as one.
The practical consequence is simple. If you search for « Capodanno Venezia 2026 », you will partly land on pages about last year. Always check the publication date and the night announced. This article writes the date out in full to avoid confusion.

For booking, two pointers without a price figure. A specialist guide, Hotelier’s Choice (updated March 2026), recommends booking accommodation three to six months ahead. The fireworks show of the 2025-2026 edition was organised by Vela Spa for the City of Venice, above the Bacino di San Marco. For 2026-2027, neither the start time, the duration nor any music is published. An undated tourist guide mentions about twenty minutes for a past edition: this is an indication, not a timetable to plan down to the quarter hour.
The cost is another unknown. According to the official tourist site, the show was free for the 2024-2025 edition. Its 2026-2027 cost is not confirmed.
For the best viewpoint, the Commune’s advice for the 2025-2026 edition recommends the Riva, near the ACTV Arsenale stop, and Venezia Unica cites Riva degli Schiavoni as a good viewing area. The Commune also stated that the fireworks cannot be seen from Piazza San Marco or from the Piazzetta. Several commercial guides nevertheless present the square as the main spot. This is the most frequent conflict between sources, and the official advice should take precedence. No published source confirms the location for 2026-2027.

4. Piazza San Marco, Mestre and Jesolo: the other places for the night
Piazza San Marco: the big unknown for 2026-2027
A press article dated 29 December 2025 announced that the square would be closed to the public during the 2025-2026 edition’s party. Nothing equivalent is published for 2026-2027 at the date of consultation. An undated guide describes one-way pedestrian traffic from 11:00 pm and capacity checks at the entrances to the square. Nothing of the kind is published for 2026-2027: treat these elements as clues, not as rules.

5. Glass, cans and the ordinance: last year’s rule
What the ordinance said in 2025-2026, and what the 2026-2027 text does not say yet
The most common trap concerns drinks. The night security ordinance for 2025-2026 (OR/2025/1014, dated 20 December 2025) banned takeaway sales of drinks in glass, cans and plastic bottles with caps from 7:00 pm on 31 December 2025 until 6:00 am on 1 January 2026. The ban therefore started five hours before midnight.
The 2026-2027 text is not published at the date of consultation. Read this rule as a clue about what might be renewed, not as a settled rule. For the 2025-2026 edition, penalties ranged from €25 to €500 (article 7-bis of the TUEL), with a reduced payment of €50.

6. Getting home after midnight: trains and buses
Night trains: a 2025-2026 service with nothing announced for 2026-2027
For the 2025-2026 night, Trenitalia Regionale Veneto announced, in a press release of 24 December 2025, 16 special trains from Venezia Santa Lucia after midnight, departing between 12:51 am and 4:27 am. The destinations listed were Conegliano, Portogruaro, Verona Porta Nuova, Rovigo, Padua, Treviso, Castelfranco Veneto and Venezia Mestre.
For 2026-2027, no equivalent release had been published as of 3 November 2026. Check Trenitalia’s website before you leave, without treating it as a guarantee of the service.
On buses and vaporetti, no announcement of a special service for the 2026-2027 night had been found at the date of consultation.

7. Getting into the city: access fee and formalities
The contributo di accesso and entry formalities
The contributo di accesso is the daily access fee introduced by the City. The 2026 calendar had 60 days, from 3 April to 26 July, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The fee was €5 if paid at least four days before access, and €10 after that. No December day appears in this calendar.
The 2027 calendar is not published at the date of consultation. So don’t conclude that the fee will apply on 31 December 2026, or that it will not. Payment goes through the official portal, cda.veneziaunica.it, whose page could not be read for this version of the article.
The European Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen borders since 10 April 2026, according to the published review. ETIAS is not yet in force. Sources disagree: the last quarter of 2026 according to several aggregators citing the Commission, 2027 according to others. No final official decision has been found.

8. Cold, fog and acqua alta
A cold, damp winter on the canals
Venice in December is cold and damp. The 1991-2020 averages give about 1.2 °C as the minimum and 8.4 °C as the maximum, with roughly fifty millimetres of rain over about six days. The guides consulted describe a feeling colder than the thermometer on the canals, between 0 and 8 °C depending on the site.
According to guides, the sun rises around 7:30 to 7:50 am and sets around 4:30 pm: the midnight party therefore takes place after a long, cold evening.
The reference threshold for acqua alta is 110 cm above the zero of Punta della Salute, according to the briefing from the City’s Tide Centre. Beyond that, flooding becomes significant. The MOSE mobile barrier is announced to rise above 130 cm, according to a 2020 article: this threshold needs to be reconfirmed with the City. For 2018, 121 episodes of acqua alta were recorded, with a peak at 156 cm. There is no reliable monthly statistic for December.
