In a nutshell: In May 2026, Córdoba hosts three exceptional back-to-back festivals: the Cruces de Mayo (floral crosses in the streets, April 29–May 3, free entry), the UNESCO Patios Festival (64 privately-owned flower-filled courtyards open to all, May 4–17, free entry) and the Feria de Córdoba (86 free and public casetas, May 23–30). Best strategy: arrive late April for the Cruces, stay for the Patios, and come back at the end of May for the Feria. Book accommodation months in advance — prices rise 30 to 50% in May.

Picture an entire city that explodes in colour for thirty days. Giant crosses covered in geraniums in the plazas, privately-owned flower-filled courtyards that open their doors to everyone, riders in traditional costumes parading along the Guadalquivir. This is the Mayo Cordobés, and it exists nowhere else on earth.

Córdoba in May 2026 means three distinct events in a row, each with its own magic. This guide explains how to combine them smartly, what you absolutely cannot miss, and insider tips that only locals know.

Cruces de Mayo: Córdoba Comes Alive from April 29

Official Dates and Hours 2026

April 29–May 3, 2026 Free entry 52 official crosses Until 2am

The festival begins even before May. Every April 29, 52 monumental floral crosses appear in Córdoba’s plazas, alleys and patios. Decorated with carnations, geraniums and bougainvilleas, they often stand several metres high and are erected by neighbourhood brotherhoods that spend weeks preparing them.

  • Wednesday April 29: 12:00 – 00:00
  • Thursday Apr 30, Friday May 1, Saturday May 2: 12:00 – 2:00
  • Sunday May 3: 12:00 – 16:00
  • 52 crosses: 35 brotherhoods + 14 associations + 3 clubs
Local tip: Evenings are far livelier than afternoons (sevillanas, live music). If you prefer quieter visits, the crosses are also beautiful between 12:00 and 14:00. Download the free Mayo Cordobés app (iOS/Android) to see all crosses on a map and check queue times in real time.

What is a Cruces de Mayo?

The tradition dates back to the 17th century. Andalusian brotherhoods decorated crosses to celebrate the Holy Cross in May. In Córdoba, this tradition became a municipal competition with three categories, prizes up to €2,000 for first place, and fierce rivalry between neighbourhoods. The cross owners set up bars around them, music plays, locals dance sevillanas — and everyone drinks rebujito (manzanilla + lemonade) until the early hours.

Best Neighbourhoods for the Cruces

San Basilio is the star neighbourhood: the crosses are the most monumental and the atmosphere is the most festive. White alleys, lanterns and music until 2am make it unforgettable. San Andrés has a younger, livelier atmosphere, perfect on Friday night. San Agustín is calmer and more authentic, less touristy.

It’s impossible to see all 52 crosses in one day. Choose one or two neighbourhoods, sit down, order a drink and watch Cordoban life unfold. That’s where the real magic happens.

The Festival at a Glance

May 4–17, 2026 Free entry 64 patios open UNESCO since 2012

Listed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2012, the Córdoba Patios Festival celebrates its 105th edition in 2026 with 64 spaces open to the public (53 in the official competition + 11 free visits). Residents open their private homes to reveal their patio — an inner courtyard obsessively decorated with hundreds of flower pots on the walls. Everything is free.

  • Morning: 11:00–14:00 — best on weekdays right at opening
  • Evening: 18:00–22:00 — magical night lighting
  • Last day (Sun May 17): closes at 20:30
  • Recommended duration: 2 to 3 days for all 6 routes
Tips to avoid queues: Arrive at 11:00 sharp — almost no queues yet. Or visit after 20:30 — night lighting is magical and daytime crowds have thinned. Prefer weekdays (Monday–Thursday) over weekends.

The 6 Official Routes

🌺 San Basilio — the most iconic

THE patio neighbourhood, southwest of the historic centre near the Mosque. Here you’ll find Calle Marroquíes, 6, the most prize-winning patio in the contest’s entire history: 11 first prizes. Downside: the longest queues of the entire festival, up to 45 minutes at peak times.

🌼 Santa Marina (Axerquía) — the most authentic

The « bullfighters’ neighbourhood » to the east offers larger patios with a calmer, more authentic atmosphere. Fewer tourists, shorter queues, and some of the finest botanical patios in the festival. The Palacio de Viana nearby houses 12 patios in different historical styles — paid entry (~€8) but exceptional.

🌿 San Lorenzo (Axerquía) — the quietest

The furthest route from the tourist centre is also the most peaceful. Charming streets, shaded plazas, and often more plant-focused patios. Best visited at 11:00 on weekdays.

🕌 Judería — the most historic

The medieval Jewish quarter around the Mosque-Cathedral. Smaller but spectacular patios with unique Moorish-Andalusian décor. Very busy as this is the main tourist area — prefer weekday visits.

🚉 Santiago – San Pedro — the most accessible

Between the train station and the historic centre, this route mixes classic and contemporary patios. Ideal for visitors arriving by train and wanting to start immediately.

🏡 Alcázar Viejo — the alternative to San Basilio

Adjacent to San Basilio with a similar atmosphere but less known. Some exceptional botanical patios, fewer crowds, and the same magic of white alleys.

Must-See Patios

  • Marroquíes, 6: The most prize-winning in history — 11 first prizes. Queues expected but guaranteed value.
  • San Basilio, 44: 1st prize Singular Patios 2025. Warm family atmosphere.
  • Pastora, 2: 1st prize Modern Architecture 2025. Contemporary patio with clean design.
  • Palacio de Viana (Plaza Don Gome, 2): 12 patios in one venue, paid entry (~€8) but worth every cent.

The Most Accessible Feria in Andalusia

May 23–30, 2026 All 86 casetas free El Arenal fairgrounds No invitation needed

The Feria de Nuestra Señora de la Salud takes place May 23–30, 2026 at the El Arenal fairgrounds on the banks of the Guadalquivir, with a stunning view of the Mosque. The key difference from Seville’s Feria de Abril: in Córdoba, all 86 casetas (tents) are public and free. No invitation needed — walk into any tent, order a drink, and watch locals dance.

  • 11:00–14:00: Paseo de caballos — Andalusian horse parade with riders in traje corto
  • 14:00–17:00: Lunch break — casetas close for the Andalusian siesta
  • 17:00–22:00: Casetas reopen, less crowded, great for finding a table
  • 22:00–2:00: Live music, sevillanas, the dance floors of every caseta come alive
Pixidia tip: The casetas close between 14:00 and 17:00 for the Andalusian siesta. Use this time to visit the Mosque (book in advance) or rest before the long night ahead.

Dress Code: What to Wear at the Feria

For women: The traje de flamenca (flounced flamenco dress) is strongly encouraged. Córdoba’s dresses are known for their understated elegance. Heels (minimum 4–5 cm) are essential. Dresses available for hire from ~€20–50/day.

For tourists: Smart summer clothing is perfectly acceptable. Avoid beach attire (very short shorts, flip flops, t-shirts) in the more traditional casetas.

Flamenco Before the Feria: Tablao El Cardenal

If you want to experience flamenco in a professional, intimate setting, the Tablao El Cardenal — located in the Palacio del Cardenal Salinas, two minutes from the Mosque — is one of Córdoba’s finest flamenco venues.

How to Combine All Three Festivals: Our Itineraries

Andalusian tradition — watering plants in the patios of Córdoba

Which combination to choose?

Option A: 7 days (Cruces + Patios) Option B: 4 days (Patios only) Option C: Full month

The ideal combination for a first visit: the Cruces + Patios (7 days). The Cruces end May 3, the Patios begin May 4 — the timing is perfect and you get the best of both events.

Key advice: If you can only choose one event, choose the Patios Festival (May 4–17). It is the only UNESCO-listed event, the most photogenic, and uniquely exists only here. The Cruces and Feria can be found in other Andalusian cities — Córdoba’s Patios exist nowhere else.

Option A — 7 Days: Cruces + Patios (Recommended)

  • Day 1 (Apr 29): Arrive by train. Afternoon: historic centre. Evening: first cross in San Basilio.
  • Day 2 (Apr 30): Mosque morning (book in advance). San Andrés afternoon. Evening tapas and sevillanas.
  • Day 3 (May 1): Jewish quarter, final Cruces night.
  • Day 4 (May 4 — Patios begin): San Basilio at 11:00. Evening Judería patios.
  • Day 5 (May 5): Axerquía route (Santa Marina + San Lorenzo). Palacio de Viana. Dinner at Bodegas Mezquita.
  • Day 6 (May 6): Santiago–San Pedro route. Flamenco show at Tablao El Cardenal.
  • Day 7 (May 7): Marroquíes, 6 at 11:00. Lunch. Train home.

Option B — 4 Days: Patios Only

  • Day 1 (May 4): Arrive. San Basilio at 11:00. Alcázar Viejo afternoon.
  • Day 2: Axerquía (Santa Marina + San Lorenzo). Quiet and authentic.
  • Day 3: Judería + Mosque morning. Santiago–San Pedro afternoon. Flamenco evening.
  • Day 4: Marroquíes, 6 at 11:00. Palacio de Viana. Afternoon departure.

Option C — The Full Month (April 29 – May 30)

For lovers of Andalusia. Combine all three festivals with day trips from Córdoba: Seville by AVE (52 min), Granada (1h15 by bus), Ronda (2h30 by train). The quiet weeks between events are perfect for visiting monuments without crowds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the exact dates for the Córdoba Patios Festival 2026?

The Córdoba Patios Festival 2026 runs from May 4 to 17, 2026. Patios open 11:00–14:00 and 18:00–22:00 daily. The last day (Sunday May 17) closes early at 20:30. Entry is free to all 64 participating patios.

Are the Córdoba patios really free to visit?

Yes, 100% free. All 53 competition patios and 11 open-visit patios are free during the festival (May 4–17). These are private homes whose owners voluntarily open their doors. No ticket or reservation needed. The only exception is the Palacio de Viana, a private museum-palace (~€8 entry, outside the festival).

When should I visit the patios to avoid long queues?

Two best windows: 11:00 sharp at opening (almost no queues, especially weekdays) and after 20:30 (night lighting is magical and daytime crowds have gone). Avoid weekends and the 12:30–14:00 slot, which generates the longest waits (20–45 min at popular patios like Marroquíes, 6). Monday and Tuesday are the quietest days.

Do I need to dress as a flamenca for the Feria de Córdoba?

No, it’s not compulsory. The flamenco outfit is greatly appreciated and you’ll blend in much more easily wearing one, but tourists in smart summer clothes are perfectly welcome in all casetas. Flamenco dresses can be hired in Córdoba from €20–50 per day. Avoid beach attire (very short shorts, flip flops) in the more traditional casetas.

How many days should I spend at the Córdoba Patios Festival?

Allow at least 2 days, ideally 3 to 4, to comfortably explore all 6 routes. With 64 patios across the city, trying to see everything in one day is neither possible nor enjoyable. A comfortable pace: 8–12 patios per half-day, with a lunch break during the 14:00–18:00 closure. If you only have one day, focus on San Basilio and Alcázar Viejo.

Can I combine Córdoba and Seville on the same trip in May?

Absolutely — and it’s highly recommended. Seville is only 52–56 minutes by AVE from Córdoba (from ~€9). The two cities pair perfectly for an Andalusian circuit: Seville’s Feria de Abril is in April, Córdoba’s festivals are in May — you can catch both over two consecutive weeks. In May, Seville is less crowded (post-Feria) but still magnificent with its orange blossoms and shorter Cathedral queues.
