A private minivan does not go all the way up to Christ the Redeemer: it stops at Paineiras, and the last stretch is done by rack railway or official van. Only one listing in the set announces the train, the others go through Paineiras or do not state their access mode. The official ticket alone costs about €15 to €23 per adult, a shared tour from €70 with guide and transfer, a private one €176 to €210 per adult for two. Works on the site last until the end of May 2027 and halve the capacity of the upper area: book an early slot.
You may have typed the question in these terms: private minivan or rack railway for Christ the Redeemer? Before comparing, one correction that changes the choice. A private minivan, a taxi or a ride-hailing car does not go all the way to the statue: they drop you at the Paineiras visitor center, about 2.5 km away, and the last stretch is reserved for the consortium’s official vans or the train leaving from Cosme Velho. The real choice is therefore between the train and the official van, then between a ticket bought on its own, a shared tour and a private tour that handles the transfer for you.
I went through the Viator catalog for Rio and kept 11 tours that include Christ, rated from 4.69 to 4.99. Only one explicitly announces the train ride: the Christ by train, Sugarloaf and barbecue day. Its 4.69 rating is under my usual 4.7 floor, and I keep it as an exception because without it the promise of the title cannot be illustrated. I did, however, set aside the best-proven listing of the set, with more than 5,000 reviews: it is suspended on every date I sampled from 7 October to 5 November 2026.
One piece of current news weighs on everything else: works started at Christ on 3 August 2026 and are due to last about ten months, until the end of May 2027. The monument stays open, but the simultaneous capacity of the upper area is cut by 50%. For each listing I tell you what is included, what is not and in which language the guide is declared, because that is where price gaps hide.
How you really get up to Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer stands 38 m tall, pedestal included (30 m of statue and 8 m of pedestal), weighs 1,145 tonnes, and sits at about 710 m of altitude on Corcovado. It was inaugurated on 12 October 1931 and voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World on 7 July 2007 (Wikipedia). It stands in Tijuca National Park, an urban forest of about 3,972 hectares, and it is this park that sets the access rule (Wikipedia).
Here is that rule. Cars, taxis, ride-hailing cars and tour minivans only go as far as the Paineiras visitor center, about 2.5 km from the statue (Lonely Planet). For the last stretch there are only two motorized ways: the Corcovado rack railway from Cosme Velho, and the official vans of the Paineiras Corcovado consortium. Two listings in my selection spell it out in black and white: the tour stops at Paineiras to board the park’s official vehicles. A third way exists on foot, by the trail from Parque Lage, but guides report past muggings: I do not recommend it without a guide or a group. The “private minivan” therefore describes the format of the tour, not the final means of access.
Train or official van: the comparison
| Criterion | Corcovado train | Van from Copacabana or Largo do Machado | Van from Paineiras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult | R$134 (about €23.4) | R$132 (about €23.1) | R$87 (about €15.2) |
| Ages 7 to 11 | R$107 | R$105 | R$60 |
| Ages 60 and over | R$70 (about €12.2) | R$105 | R$60 |
| Under 6 | Free | Free | Free |
| Departure | Cosme Velho, rua Cosme Velho 513 | Praça do Lido in Copacabana, or Largo do Machado in front of the Nossa Senhora da Glória church | Paineiras visitor center |
| Ride up | 15 to 20 minutes | 30 to 45 minutes depending on the departure | Final stretch only |
| Hours | Check on the official website | Roughly 7 am to 6 pm during the works, with a limited number of tickets per slot | |
The amounts come from the official train website and from the local press for the vans (Trem do Corcovado) (Diário do Turismo), recorded in October 2026 and converted at the Viator rate of the day (R$1 for €0.175). They change every year, so check them before buying. The ticket covers the round trip from the same boarding point and access to the monument, and there is no ticket without transport.
My take. The train runs 3.824 km through the Tijuca forest, with a maximum gradient of 30%, and has been in service since 9 October 1884 (Wikipedia). Trains leave every 20 to 30 minutes, but the queue can grow in high season. The van is more flexible on timing, often faster at busy hours according to several guides (Now in Rio), and it is the only one of the two that goes through the Paineiras visitor center, with its exhibition hall and shops. The train does not stop there. The van road is winding.
Ticket only, shared tour or private tour: what you pay
| Format | Price per adult (based on 2 adults, October 2026) | What you handle or what you gain |
|---|---|---|
| Official ticket only | €15 to €23 | You handle the trip to the departure point and the schedule |
| Shared half day centered on Christ | €69.63 to €92.24 | Hotel transfer, guide, Christ ticket; train or van depending on the listing |
| Small group with Sugarloaf or Dona Marta | €117.10 to €118.90 | Fewer people in the vehicle, tickets included depending on the listing |
| Shared day with Sugarloaf | €140.16 to €170.91 | An 8 to 9 h day, lunch included on most listings |
| Private for 2 | €176.33 to €209.82 | Flexible schedule, but tickets not always listed |
| Private for 4 travelers | €113.03 to €122.39 per traveler | Below the price of a shared day combo, tickets not listed |
Read this table with a caveat: two of the three private listings do not list the Christ or Sugarloaf tickets in their inclusions, while shared combos most often include them. Always compare like for like. A solo traveler or a couple on a tight budget is better off with the official ticket or a shared half day. From three or four travelers, the private tour becomes a serious option.
The 11 Christ the Redeemer tours compared

1. Christ by train, Sugarloaf, Selarón and barbecue
This is the only listing in my selection that announces the rack railway ride, with the train ticket included. Its 4.69 rating sits just under my usual 4.7 floor, and I keep it because it alone answers the question in the title. The hotel pickup around 7 am also saves you from hunting for a slot on your own during the works.
- Corcovado train ticket up to Christ the Redeemer
- Hotel pickup in the South Zone, departure around 7 am
- Sugarloaf and barbecue lunch in the full-day option

2. Christ by official van, Sugarloaf and barbecue
This is the most proven tour in the selection, with more than 3,000 reviews, and the one that goes up to Christ by official van, entry ticket included. Two options coexist on the listing: I take the basic one if Sugarloaf is already planned elsewhere, and the full one if I want everything sorted in a single day. The commentary is declared in English too.
- Entry to Christ the Redeemer by van
- Guide with commentary in French, English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese
- Hotel pickup and drop-off

3. Half day: Christ, Selarón and the cathedral
This is the cheapest option centered on Christ, with a minibus to the Paineiras visitor center and then the ride up. One review points out that a taxi plus the train costs less, and that is true on paper: here you pay for the hotel transfer, the guide and a wider program covering Selarón, the cathedral, the Maracanã and the Sambadrome. Departure around 8 am.
- Christ the Redeemer entry ticket
- Air-conditioned vehicle
- Guide and hotel transfers

4. All-inclusive day: Selarón, Christ and Sugarloaf
One flat price, attraction tickets and all-you-can-eat lunch included: this is the easiest one to budget, and its 3,000 reviews at 4.89 carry weight. The listing does not say how it reaches Christ, so I promise you neither train nor van. If you want a French-speaking guide, look instead at the day with the train ride or the one by official van.
- Attraction tickets (shared tour)
- All-you-can-eat buffet lunch
- Hotel pickup between 7 and 8 am, time confirmed the day before

5. Corcovado, Sugarloaf, Selarón and the cathedral
This is the longest day on the list, and the listing is clear about access: a stop at Paineiras, then the ride up in the official vehicles of the national park authority. Christ and Sugarloaf tickets are included, along with a barbecue lunch. Meet at 7:30 am at the Hilton, or pickup from some hotels in Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon.
- Christ the Redeemer ticket
- Sugarloaf complex ticket
- Barbecue lunch at a steakhouse

6. Small-group half day: Christ then Sugarloaf
A half day that links Christ and then the Sugarloaf cable car, in a small group and by van. As with the previous listing, the tour stops at Paineiras to board the park’s official vehicles. Three departures are possible, 7:30 am, 9 am or 1:30 pm, which lets you play with the light and the crowds.
- Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf tickets depending on the option, all-tickets option measured at €117.10
- Luxury van with driver
- Departures at 7:30 am, 9 am or 1:30 pm

7. Small group of 6: Mirante Dona Marta and Christ without the crowds
The best-rated tour in the selection, 4.99 over 268 reviews, with 6 people at most and the Christ tickets by van included. Watch the timing: the title mentions sunrise, while the description mentions a departure between 4 and 5 pm. I suggest confirming the time on the listing before booking. It sells fast, two of the six sampled dates are already full.
- Christ the Redeemer tickets by van
- Small group of up to 6 people in an air-conditioned vehicle
- Breakfast announced on the listing

8. Private: Christ and Sugarloaf, 6:30 am departure
This is where the “private minivan” of the title makes sense: an air-conditioned private vehicle with a driver, a certified guide and an itinerary you can change on the way. The operator updated the listing for the works and recommends a 6:30 am departure (6 am from Barra da Tijuca or Recreio), which I find sensible. The listing does not list the Christ and Sugarloaf tickets, so plan to book them separately and check the details.
- Certified private guide and private vehicle with driver
- Pickup at the hotel, the airport or the cruise terminal
- Itinerary adjustable on the way, bottled water

9. Private: a day at your own pace with a French-speaking guide
This is the cheapest private tour on the list and the only one with a declared French-speaking guide. The schedule is set with the guide, which lets you aim for an early slot during the works. Confirmation is not instant and entry tickets are not listed in the inclusions: ask about them before paying. A second option exists at €370.76 for 2 adults.
- Private guide
- Pickup at the hotel or the airport
- Air-conditioned vehicle, time to be agreed with the guide

10. Private with Christ ticket: Maracanã, Sugarloaf and downtown
A private tour that includes the Christ ticket, which the two previous private listings do not, and adds the Maracanã, Sugarloaf and the historic center. Departure at 7:30 am on the sampled date, with a hotel pickup time confirmed with the operator. Confirmation is not instant, so book a few days ahead.
- Christ the Redeemer ticket
- Air-conditioned vehicle
- Professional multilingual guide

11. Christ from above: 35 minutes by helicopter
This is not a way to go up to Christ, it is another way to see him: a 35-minute panoramic flight over Christ, Sugarloaf, Ipanema, Leblon and Arpoador. I keep it as a plan B when clouds cover the statue, and the listing mentions a rerouted flight along the coast if Christ is hidden. Slots from 8 am to 5:30 pm.
- 35-minute flight over Christ, Sugarloaf and the beaches
- Filtered water and coffee
- No steps to climb, you stay in the aircraft

My decision grid. You want to ride the train: the day with the train ride is the only one that announces it. You want a French-speaking guide and the official van: the van day or the Christ half day. You want the easiest formula to budget: the all-inclusive day. You are after calm: the small group of 6. You travel as three or four: compare the private 6:30 am departure, the French-speaking private and the private with Christ ticket. The sky is clouded over: the panoramic flight has a fallback route.
The works, without drama. Since 3 August 2026, Christ has been a building site: four escalators in service for 23 years are being replaced, and two inclined lifts are planned for people with reduced mobility (Panrotas). The simultaneous capacity of the upper area is cut by 50%, the monument and the accesses (train, vans, trails) stay open, but with lower volumes. Count 220 steps between the drop-off point and the monument, including 80 mandatory stone steps between the second level and the statue, about 8 minutes going up and 6 coming down. The official vans carried one million visitors from January to August 2026, a record for eight months (Diário do Rio). The authorities ask people to plan ahead: that is my advice too.
Slots and visibility. The quiet slots cited by the Brazilian press are 7:30 to 9 am and after 4 pm. High season, from December to March, lengthens the queues. The real risk remains cloud: guides advise reserving Christ for the clearest morning of your stay and keeping some margin in your schedule. I check the weather the day before and plan a buffer half day. October and November come with no guarantee, so favor a flexible listing.
Children and ID. Several listings require photo ID to validate the child fare, otherwise the ticket office may charge the adult fare. Check this on the listing you pick.
Sugarloaf on the same day. Sugarloaf rises to 392 m, its cable car dates from 1912 and it has two sections of a few minutes each (Wikipedia). The park is open from 8:30 am to 9 pm according to the official website, and an adult ticket costs around €36 according to the travel press, to be checked. Most combos include it.
Cancellation. The listings show a full refund up to 24 hours before departure, to be reconfirmed on each page when you book.

Frequently asked questions
Can you drive or take a minivan all the way up to Christ the Redeemer?
No. Cars, taxis, ride-hailing cars and tour minivans stop at the Paineiras visitor center, about 2.5 km from the statue. The last stretch is done by train from Cosme Velho, by official van or on foot. A private tour therefore takes you to the right starting point, not to the foot of the statue. See the private 6:30 am departure.
Is the train faster than the van?
Not necessarily. The train ride takes 15 to 20 minutes, the van 30 to 45 minutes depending on the departure, but several guides note that the van is often faster at busy hours because the queue is shorter. The train follows a fixed route through the forest, the van offers more flexibility. See the day with the train ride.
What do the Christ the Redeemer works change in 2026 and 2027?
They started on 3 August 2026 and are due to last about ten months, until the end of May 2027. The simultaneous capacity of the upper area is cut by 50%, the monument stays open and the vans board under a quota. Book a ticket or a tour in advance and aim for an early slot, like the 6:30 am departure recommended on this private listing.
How much time should you plan for Christ the Redeemer?
Count a 5 h half day for a visit centered on Christ, and 8 to 9 h for a day with Sugarloaf and a lunch. The train ride alone takes 15 to 20 minutes, not counting the queue and the trip to Cosme Velho. See the Christ half day.
Can you see Sugarloaf on the same day?
Yes, most combos include it, such as the official van day, the all-inclusive day or the small-group half day. The Sugarloaf park is open from 8:30 am to 9 pm according to the official website.
Which tours declare a French-speaking guide?
Five listings in my selection: the day with the train ride, the official van day, the Christ half day, the French-speaking private and the helicopter flight. For the others, French is not confirmed: check the listing before paying, and check the available languages if you need English.
