On 11 November 2026, Cologne’s carnival opens at 11:11am on the Heumarkt and the Alter Markt, in the Old Town. The free public celebration starts at 9am and carries on with music until 8pm. The countdown begins at 11:10am, followed by the launch at 11:11am with a stage firework display and confetti. To get a good view, arrive before 10am, near the main stage on the Heumarkt. The 2026 rules on glass and objects had not been published when this guide was written: check stadt-koeln.de before the day.

Every year, Cologne kicks off its carnival season on 11 November at 11:11am, in a dense and cheerful crowd. Access to the square is free, but the celebration has its own customs: arrive early, know where to stand to see the stage, and plan your journey around the traffic restrictions. This guide sets out the programme published for 2026, presents the 2025 benchmarks as such, and flags what to check before you go. If you are also planning around the city’s other big events, our Cologne Pride 2026 guide covers its large Pride celebration.

The Heumarkt: the main stage

Free public access Wednesday 11 November 2026 Cool November, rain possible 9am to 8pm

The countdown and the 11:11am launch take place on the main stage on the Heumarkt, in the heart of the Old Town. It is the best spot to see the show, but also where the crowd is densest. Event listings put attendance at around 30,000 people across the two squares, an unofficial figure. The Heumarkt and the neighbouring Alter Markt are the two squares of the celebration. The sources consulted do not confirm where a second music stage sits. Festivals in Deutschland lists the event and its public access.

Highlights

  • The countdown and launch on the main stage on the Heumarkt
  • The neighbouring Alter Markt, where big screens relay the show
  • A party that runs until 8pm, if you want to stay all day
Pixidia tip: arrive before 10am. At a previous edition, an event listing reported full access around 10:16am: it is a secondary source, but it gives an idea of the scale. Once you are settled in, it is hard to leave before 1pm. Pick a meeting point outside the crowd in case you get separated.

If you want to extend the day another way, a two-hour guided tour leaves from the cathedral and takes in the Old Town’s breweries, with three Kölsch included. A departure is scheduled on 11 November at 7pm.

The morning, moment by moment

The official programme starts at 9am with a welcome and entertainment on the Heumarkt and the Alter Markt. These are the moments to note, as listed in the programme published for 2026. Times can change at the last minute.

  • 9am: welcome and entertainment on the Heumarkt and Alter Markt
  • 11am: official speeches, in the presence of the children’s Dreigestirn
  • 11:10am: countdown
  • 11:11am: session launch, stage fireworks and a shower of confetti
  • 11:33am: the trio chosen for the 2027 session is presented on the main stage
  • From 11:50am: music until the end of the day. The line-up of bands is to be confirmed on the official programme
  • 8pm: concerts end

The trio presented at 11:33am is not proclaimed that day. The Dreigestirn is the traditional carnival trio of Prince, Peasant and Maiden. Presented on 9 September 2026 by the Kölner Narren-Zunft von 1880, it is made up of Prinz Marius I., Bauer Alex and Jungfrau Johanna, which are carnival names. According to the city, the proclamation and the handover of insignia take place on 8 January 2027 at the Gürzenich.

Heads up: the « Elfter im Elften » concert is not on 11 November. It takes place on Saturday 14 November 2026 at 6:45pm at the LANXESS arena.

For an indoor alternative, the Kamelle Festival takes place on 11 November at DIE HALLE in Ehrenfeld. It is for 18 and over only and opens from 10am to around 10pm. A family programme, the Kölsche Countdown at the Tanzbrunnen, is also announced for that day, but check the times with the organiser. For another big carnival to compare with, our Venice Carnival 2027 guide covers that one.

3. Getting there and getting ready: train, KVB and rules

Station, KVB and airport

Cologne has no RER-style express network. Getting around by rail relies on the KVB Stadtbahn light rail, S-Bahn lines and regional trains. From the central station (Hauptbahnhof), the Heumarkt is a ten-minute walk.

  • Central station: about 10 minutes’ walk to the Heumarkt
  • Heumarkt station (KVB): announcements from previous years cite lines 1, 7 and 9. The 2026 network plan had not been published when this guide was written.
  • Köln/Bonn airport: an S-Bahn line reaches the Hauptbahnhof in about fifteen minutes

In 2025, cars could not cross the Deutzer Brücke into the centre, nor use Augustinerstraße or Markmannsgasse, from 6am to around 10pm. Pedestrians were directed to the Hohenzollernbrücke. These measures concern 2025. Check the 2026 traffic plan on the city’s website before you travel.

Pixidia tip: allow extra time at the station. Trains can be crowded, delayed or changed on the day.

Glass, objects and under-18s

In 2025, a glass ban applied on the inner Grüngürtel from 8am to 10pm on 11 November. For 2026, the rules had not been published when this guide was written: check koeln.de and the city’s website before you go. To be safe, bring a small bag and avoid glass. For under-18s, the city reminds people that alcohol is regulated during street carnival: no alcohol under 16, and spirits are reserved for those aged 18 and over.

As for the weather, November in Cologne is cool and often wet. A waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes are sensible, since the square is outdoors. If carnival appeals to you for February, the Tenerife Carnival 2027 in Santa Cruz is another option.
