For the Immacolata break in 2026, choose snow only if it is confirmed when you leave. The break runs from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December. The 8th is a public holiday in Italy, not in the UK or the US. Some ski areas announce an opening on 4 or 5 December, « subject to snow », while Cortina has not yet published a date. For mild weather, the South is still an option, though not for swimming: Naples, Sicily and Puglia. The northern Christmas markets are one more option.

Four days, one day to take off, and one real question: snow or sun? The Immacolata break in 2026 does not look like the one in 2025. The holiday falls on a Tuesday, so Monday 7 becomes the key day. This guide helps you choose between snowy mountains, mild southern cities and the northern Christmas markets, with the dates published when we wrote it and the points that remain uncertain.

1. The break, day by day

The break starts on Saturday 5 December and ends on Tuesday 8. Tuesday 8 is the Immacolata Concezione (Immaculate Conception), a national holiday in Italy under a 1949 law. It is not a bank holiday in the UK or the US, so 8 December is an ordinary working day there. If you are based in the UK, you need to take Monday 7 off, and Tuesday 8 as well to cover the full four days, or leave on Friday 4 in the evening to gain a day.

For Italians, Monday 7 is the only day to take. In Milan, the feast of the city’s patron saint, Sant’Ambrogio, falls that day. The press reports the usual closure of schools and many offices, but we did not find an official act confirming it.

The Tuesday evening return is usually the busiest on the roads and trains, according to regional press reports from previous years. For another Italian break at the end of the year, read our article on Ognissanti 2026 in Italy.

2. Snow: ski areas opening in stages

An opening date is rarely firm more than two months in advance. Resorts write « freddo permettendo » or « snow conditions permitting »: the opening depends on the cold and the snow. The safest move is to book accommodation you can cancel, then check which lifts are open the day before you leave.

Cortina d’Ampezzo: no opening date published

Accommodation to check for your dates 4-day break More reliable at altitude Opening not announced

Cortina is the postcard image of the Dolomites, but it is also the least certain destination for this break. The resort’s website, checked when we wrote, still shows the lifts as closed and gives no date for the 2026/27 season. Previous seasons give only a trend: in 2024/25, the Faloria opened on 30 November and the Tofana on 4 December, according to a secondary source. Nothing guarantees the same timetable this year.

Highlights

  • The top of the ski area, Tofana and Faloria, is usually more reliable for snow than the village
  • Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and walks on frozen lakes such as Misurina are fallbacks, but they depend on each winter
  • The Dolomite ski areas are linked by ski buses, free or paid depending on the zone
Pixidia tip: If the snow is late, the mountains are still worth a visit. A guided outing is best decided on the day, depending on the rock, the weather and the conditions.

Monterosa Ski: the most precise dates for the break

Passes to check on the website Open 5 to 8 December High-altitude area Full season from 19 December

The official Monterosa Ski website publishes the clearest dates in the region. The 3 Vallées area (Champoluc, Frachey, Staffal, Alagna) announces an opening on Saturday 28 November 2026, running to 11 April 2027, subject to snow. For the break, Brusson, Antagnod and Gressoney-Saint-Jean open 5 to 8 December, then 12 and 13 December, with the full season from Saturday 19 December.

Highlights

  • Dates published by the resort itself, while comparison sites show other days
  • Champorcher also opens 5 to 8 December, then from 19 December
  • A high-altitude area, usually more reliable early in the season than a small village resort
Pixidia tip: On the first opening days, not every run is necessarily open. Check the list of lifts the day before you leave, not only the resort’s opening date.

3. Sea and mild weather: the South, without swimming

In December the sea is for looking at, not for swimming in. It stays between 15 and 18 °C depending on the region. The South’s appeal is the mild air, the villages and the markets. It is not a beach destination, and that should be clear before you book.

Naples and the coast: the city and the nativity scenes all year round

Flights and trains to compare 2 to 4 days Mild and humid Naples open all year

San Gregorio Armeno, the street of nativity-scene workshops, is open all year: this is Naples’ strongest argument for this break. The Amalfi Coast is harder. The ferries to Positano, Amalfi and Salerno are seasonal, from April to October, so you have to go by road, by bus or by car, on narrow roads. In winter the useful boat links are Sorrento to Naples, Capri and Ischia, to be checked with the operators.

Highlights

  • San Gregorio Armeno and its nativity-scene workshops, without waiting for a season
  • Naples as a base to reach Sorrento, Capri or Ischia
  • Neapolitan cooking and street food, which can fill a break on their own
Pixidia tip: Rent a car only if you stay on the coast. Naples is best seen on foot and by metro, while the coast is better reached by bus or on an excursion.

Palermo and Sicily: markets, food and mild weather

Flight to check from Paris 3 to 4 days About 12 to 16 °C by day Sea around 17 °C

Palermo is a simple base for a four-day break. The Ballarò market and the street food are the city’s main draw in December, with arancini and cassata, which local press lists among the seasonal treats. The December average in Palermo is around 12.6 °C, with mild days that are not summery. Sicilian Christmas markets have dates that are either past or unconfirmed for 2026, so check them. Railway works between Messina, Catania and Syracuse also need checking before you plan a route by train.

Highlights

  • The Ballarò market and its street-food stalls
  • A city you can explore on foot, with little transport to organise
  • For a detailed programme covering Palermo, Taormina and Etna, read our 5-day Sicily itinerary
Pixidia tip: Stay in one city for this break. Direct flights from France are seasonal, so compare fares for your exact dates.

Puglia and the Salento: the mild side of Lecce

Flights to Bari or Brindisi to check 3 to 4 days About 8 to 15 °C Sea around 15 °C

Lecce and the Salento combine mild weather, food and Christmas traditions. Pittule, small fried snacks served as an aperitif, and cartellate, fried pastries dipped in vincotto, are the staples of the table. Presepi in cartapesta and terracotta are the craft of the season. The Fiera di Santa Lucia in Lecce and the one in Monopoli, which starts on the evening of 12 December, are the local events to note; their 2026 dates are not confirmed here.

Highlights

  • Pittule and cartellate, the Christmas food of Puglia
  • Presepi in cartapesta, a local craft
  • Often mild days, with occasional showers
Pixidia tip: The Salento is the right choice if you want mild weather without skiing. Check the dates of local festivals the day before you leave.

4. Christmas markets: one option among others

The northern markets combine well with a mountain stop, but they are not the subject of this article. Bolzano, Merano, Trento and Bressanone are covered in our Italy Christmas markets 2026 guide, with published dates.

Milan, Verona and Aosta: the city with the mountains nearby

Hotels expensive in Milan during the break 2 to 3 days Northern winter Market dates to confirm

Milan announces a Duomo market from 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, according to a markets guide, without confirmation from the city. Verona is announced from 20 November to 28 December, based on the previous edition. Aosta, with its Marché Vert Noël, is close to Courmayeur, Pila and Cervinia: an option to combine a market with snow, with dates still to be confirmed.

Highlights

  • Milan, the easiest to reach from Paris, by train or by plane
  • Verona, a city of art with a Christmas market, linked to Milan by train (journey time to reconfirm)
  • Aosta, bilingual in Italian and French, easy for French speakers
Pixidia tip: Milan is the most expensive city for accommodation during the break. Compare it with Verona or Turin, and check the market dates for each city.

5. Getting there from France

By train. Paris to Milan takes about 7 hours direct on the fastest trains, according to a timetable aggregator; with a connection, the trip goes past 9 hours. Since 1 January 2026, Trenitalia applies dynamic pricing on its Frecce trains: book early. The starting prices announced from around €59 in second class are not guaranteed fares. For the opening of sales, read our article on SNCF tickets for Christmas 2026.

By plane. Air France shows indicative fares from €159 return to Bologna and Milan Linate for the break dates. These are search-engine prices, not a price list, and they change quickly.

By car. For the Dolomites, the car is the most flexible option, but the drive is long from Paris. Mountain passes require winter tyres or snow chains, depending on the rules in force on your route.

Strikes. No transport strike was found for 5 to 8 December in the sources we checked. The official strike register of the Italian Ministry of Transport could not be read when we wrote, so check it before you leave. The strike-free periods for the year-end holidays start around 17 to 18 December and do not cover this break.

Sardinia. We do not recommend Sardinia for this break. The beach season is closed, and no winter ferry from Toulon is confirmed.

6. Budget: the items to compare

We do not give a total, because prices vary too much by exact date and how far ahead you book. The items to price are transport (train or plane), accommodation, the ski pass and meals.

For the ski pass, press extracts quoting a press release give €89 for one day and €453 for six days at Dolomiti Superski. The official document could not be read: confirm these prices on the resort’s website before you book.

For accommodation, comparison sites give no reliable average for December 2026. Mountain hotels cost much more at Christmas and New Year than during the rest of the winter: compare your exact dates, and prices per person per day.
