Paracas is the better one-day trip from Lima. The full-day Lima to Paracas tour costs $89.10 per adult for two, has a combined Viator and TripAdvisor rating of 4.86 from 890 reviews, and has 59 of 60 dates open through December 22, 2026. Huacachina is a longer trip, best taken as a combined day or a night in Ica.
Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices and availability).
If you have one free day from Lima, pick Paracas. The full-day Lima to Paracas tour is the card we would book first. Huacachina works better as a combined day or an overnight stay.
The two places are not the same distance from Lima. Lima to Paracas takes about 3.5 to 4 hours on the Pan-American Highway south. Paracas to Huacachina takes 1 to 1.5 hours through Ica. Huacachina back to Lima takes another 3.5 to 4 hours, so combined tours often return between 11 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. The sources give no direct time from Lima to Huacachina.
Prices and availability come from the Viator partner API, checked on October 10, 2026, for departures from October 24 to December 22, 2026. We have no 2027 prices. Prices are per adult for two travelers, except the Huacachina UTV ride, which needs three.
Why Paracas and Huacachina are two different days

Paracas is a coastal town on Peru’s Pacific coast, reached by the Pan-American Highway south of Lima. The Ballestas Islands are not part of the Paracas National Reserve. They fall under a separate protected area that SERNANP manages, according to the Andina news agency. Private operators run the boats from the El Chaco dock.
Huacachina is a small oasis beside Ica, set among dunes and known for buggy rides and sandboarding. The pisco and wine tastings in this list take place in Ica, so several Huacachina products mix a winery visit with the dunes.
November and December are the driest months in the window. Daytime highs run 68 to 73°F, according to weather2travel, and Journey Latin America gives 20°C (68°F) as the seasonal maximum.
Two facts shape the choices below. The reserve entrance and the boat ticket are separate payments. The entrance is listed at about S/11 for an adult and S/3 for children from 5 to 16, open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to a third-party ticket guide that quotes the 2026 SERNANP fee. We could not confirm these figures or the hours on the SERNANP website. Second, a reseller’s two-day tour from Lima, listed on Travelocity, excludes children under 7, people with reduced mobility, pregnant women and wheelchair users.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Peru page, updated October 9, 2026, named no specific warning for Lima, Ica or Paracas in the sections we read. We could not load the U.S. State Department pages, so this article states no U.S. advisory level.

Prices and availability checked on the Viator partner API on October 10, 2026, for departures from October 24 to December 22, 2026. Ratings are combined Viator and TripAdvisor averages from the same day. Prices can change. The UTV ride is priced per person for a minimum of three travelers.
The four Paracas products run from $20 to $89.10 per adult, from two hours to a full day. The three Huacachina products run from $46.16 to $55.39, and the UTV ride is priced per person for groups of three. The combined days cost $48.60 to $135 per adult and run 16 to 18 hours.
The Huacachina-only offer is short, so for most travelers the real choice is among the combined days.
Eleven day trips, card by card

1. Lima to Paracas in one full day
Pick this one if you sleep in Lima and want Paracas without driving. Pickup covers a list of 130 Lima hotels; if you are lodged outside Miraflores, San Isidro or Barranco, write to the supplier before you book. The day covers the Ballestas Islands, the reserve and the Chincha slave tunnels. The best moment is a free day the next morning, since the listing runs 18 hours.
- Taxes and entrance fees included
- Pickup from 130 Lima hotels

2. Golden Shadows trek in the Paracas reserve
Choose this if you would rather walk than ride: a four-hour guided trek through the reserve, with a sunset finish when the sand turns golden. Meet at the supplier’s office on Chaco street, then take a one-minute walk to the dock. The inclusions list the official tourism guide and transfers, but not the reserve entrance, so ask whether a boat or the entrance is included. The best moment is a clear late-November or December day, since the sources report almost no rain.
- Guided four-hour walk in the reserve
- Official tourism guide and transfers included

3. Ballestas Islands boat tour from Paracas
It suits travelers who already sleep in Paracas. You still have to get to Paracas yourself, about 3.5 to 4 hours by road from Lima. The covered boat runs about two hours with a Spanish and English guide, past the Candelabro figure and the rock formations. Meet at the office 30 minutes before departure, then walk two minutes to the dock. The reserve entrance is a separate payment.
- Covered boat with Spanish and English guide
- Lifejacket and official tourism guide included

4. Scooter ride through the Paracas reserve
Choose the scooter if you want your own pace inside the reserve, with no guide and no fixed group. You pick your scooter at the office, according to availability, and get a helmet, glasses and a map of the reserve. The best moment is a day with no boat or trek booked. Viator publishes no duration, so ask the office how long the rental runs. Most of its 122 reviews come from TripAdvisor.
- Self-guided ride inside the reserve
- Helmet, glasses and reserve map included

5. Pisco, wine and dune buggy from Huacachina
Pick this card if you want wine and dunes in one booking. The supplier takes you to a pisco distillery in Ica, then to the Huacachina dunes for a buggy ride and sandboard practice. Pickup comes from one of 33 listed oasis hotels. The best moment is late afternoon, for the sunset slot. The trap: Viator publishes no duration, so confirm the timing before you plan the rest of the day.
- Wine, pisco and distillery tasting in Ica
- Buggy ride and sandboarding in the dunes

6. Private UTV buggy and sandboarding in Huacachina
This is the private option in the Huacachina group, and you cannot book it as a couple. Viator sells it per person with a minimum of three travelers, so a party of three pays $147. A pilot trained in off-road driving and first aid drives the UTV (utility task vehicle). The best moment is one of the six dates where we confirmed the price for three travelers. The listing shows 60 minutes, so confirm the duration. Meet at the supplier’s office, where the manager receives travelers in the hall.
- Minimum of three travelers
- Goggles and accident insurance for every occupant

7. Sandboard and sandski lesson in Ica
Pick this card if sandboarding is the reason you come to the dunes. The supplier says its school is run by a four-time sandboard world champion. The best moment is a stay of at least one night in Ica or Huacachina, which avoids the late drive back to Lima. The inclusions mention no buggy ride, so add card 5 or 6 if you want both.
- Sandski or sandboard kit with helmet and goggles
- Guide instructor, fees and wax included

8. Budget combined day: Paracas, Huacachina and pisco
Pick this card if budget matters more than the clock. At $48.60 per adult for two, it is the cheapest combined day, with 6,697 reviews. It includes the Ballestas boat trip and a pisco vineyard visit. Be ready at 5:30 a.m. opposite the JW Marriott in Miraflores. The trap: the dune buggy and sandboarding come only with the premium option, so check which option you are booking.
- Ballestas Islands boat trip with a guide
- Dunes only in the premium option

9. Premium combined day with sunset toast
Pick this card if the bus matters more than the price. It has the most reviews in the set, 9,862, and the shortest combined day at 16 hours. The operator, Peru Hop, says it is the only company with luxury buses for the long journey, while others use small vans. Ask the operator whether the sunset toast named in the title is part of your plan.
- Luxury buses for the long journey
- Extended vineyard visit with tasting

10. Full combined day with sunset
Pick this card if you want both places and a vineyard tasting, at a middle price. At $59 per adult for two, it sits between the budget day and the premium one, with 1,439 reviews. The best moment is a trip where the next morning is free, since the day runs 17 hours. The trap: the Paracas reserve is included only in the full experience. Meet your guide at Calle Tarata 252 in Miraflores.
- Two-hour Ballestas boat trip
- Wine and pisco vineyard visit with tasting

11. Private sunset picnic in the desert
Pick this card if you want a private group, a sunset picnic in the desert and lunch arranged for you. It is the only private combined day and the most expensive card: $135 per adult for two, or $270 in total. The day includes a two-hour Ballestas boat trip, a Peruvian lunch and a pisco tour at La Caravedo. Pickup comes from 206 listed hotels in Lima and nearby, one of them in Huacho.
- Private group on a luxury bus
- Peruvian lunch and pisco tour

Budget for the day
A Paracas-only day starts at $20 for the Ballestas boat and $34 for the trek. The boat is a separate ticket from the reserve entrance, listed at about S/11 for an adult, which we could not confirm on SERNANP. The trek lists only the guide and transfers, so ask whether the entrance is extra. The full day from Lima lists taxes and entrance fees as included.
Tipping is optional but appreciated. HowToPeru suggests about S/10 to S/20 per traveler for the guide and S/5 to S/10 per person for the driver at the end of a day tour. Carry small notes in soles.
A sample day from Lima
The full day to Paracas (card 1) spends about 3.5 to 4 hours on the road from Lima, and the listing runs 18 hours. For the combined days, HowToPeru reports hotel pickups between 4:30 and 6 a.m., with returns often between 11 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. For the Paracas boat and trek (cards 2 and 3), one night in Paracas makes the day easier.
Booking mistakes to avoid
Do not book the UTV ride as a couple, since Viator sells it per person with a minimum of three travelers. Do not assume the Ballestas boat covers the reserve, because they are separate payments. Do not trust the 60-minute UTV length without reading the product page. Do not plan for whales in late November, when HowToPeru places most sightings between August and October.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the better day trip from Lima, Paracas or Huacachina?
For one day from Lima, choose Paracas. The full-day tour from Lima to Paracas costs $89.10 per adult for two travelers, has a combined Viator and TripAdvisor rating of 4.86 from 890 reviews, and covers the Ballestas Islands and the Paracas National Reserve. Huacachina works better as a combined day or a night in Ica. See the full-day tour.
Can you see Huacachina in one day from Lima?
Yes, but only on a combined tour or in a private car leaving very early, and it is a long day. The route has three legs: about 3.5 to 4 hours from Lima to Paracas, 1 to 1.5 hours from Paracas to Huacachina through Ica, and 3.5 to 4 hours back to Lima. The combined products run 16 to 18 hours.

Is the Ballestas boat included in the Paracas reserve ticket?
No. The Ballestas Islands are not inside the Paracas National Reserve, and the boat is a separate payment to a private operator. The reserve entrance is listed at about S/11 for an adult, according to a third-party guide that quotes the 2026 SERNANP fee. We could not confirm it on the SERNANP website. Some products include the entrance, while the trek lists only the guide and transfers, so check each inclusion list.
How much should I tip the guide and the driver in Peru?
Tipping is optional but appreciated. HowToPeru suggests about S/10 to S/20 per traveler for the guide and S/5 to S/10 per person for the driver at the end of a day tour. These are indications, not rules, and other sources give different driver amounts, often per group. Carry small notes in soles.

Ten of the eleven work for two adults at the prices shown. The exception is the Huacachina UTV buggy ride, which Viator sells per person with a minimum of three travelers.
