Only two destinations clear our filter of 4.7 stars and 100 reviews: Dachau and the Bavarian castles, nine tours in total. Prices run from $46.24 to $251.21 per adult for two travelers. Dachau is 20 to 25 minutes by train; the castle tours last 10 to 10.5 hours. Start with the guided Dachau tour, rated 4.98.

Munich works as a base for day trips in two directions: a memorial a short train ride northwest of the city, and a set of royal castles in the Alpine foothills. We kept the Viator tours that leave from Munich and pass one filter, a rating of 4.7 or higher with at least 100 reviews. Only two destinations survive that filter. One is the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. The other is the castles of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, plus Hohenschwangau, the family castle the tours often visit alongside them.
The filter is ours, not Viator’s, and it explains the title. « Best » means the top of this filter, not the best excursions Munich has to offer. The list holds nine tours in total, five to the Dachau memorial and four to the castles, each with its rating, review count, price per adult, duration and open dates. It is not a full ranking of every excursion from Munich.
Two excursions that leave from Munich fall just below the bar and are not in the list: a Salzburg sightseeing day by rail, rated 4.63, and a Berchtesgaden and Eagle’s Nest day, rated 4.68. Tours that start in Salzburg, Berchtesgaden or Nuremberg are outside the scope of this list. The Oktoberfest tours start in the city itself, so they are not day trips.
Every price and open date was checked on October 11, 2026, for departures from October 25 to December 23, 2026. Prices are per adult for two travelers. Each tour carries Viator’s free-cancellation flag, but the cut-off time is set by each listing, so read it before you pay.
If you book only one, start with the guided Dachau tour that meets under the Glockenspiel, the highest-rated product on the list. You can check availability for that tour on Viator before you commit to a date.
Why these two destinations, and what each one asks of you
Dachau and the castles make very different days, and the difference should decide which tour you book. Dachau is a memorial and a place of education, and a visit is a historical experience rather than a leisure outing. The site is free to enter and open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on December 24. The memorial’s own guidance is that a visit takes about half a day. The Viator listings describe the camp as the first Nazi concentration camp, and one cites an estimated 42,000 prisoners who died there.
The castles were built for King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Neuschwanstein and Linderhof are the two palaces the tours visit most, and Hohenschwangau, the family castle where he grew up, sits just below Neuschwanstein on the same hill. The official Linderhof page lists the Venus Grotto as open from April 15 to October 15. A 2026 reopening was reported in the press, but we could not confirm it on the official page, so the season printed on each Viator listing is the one to rely on.
Getting to the castles without a tour takes time. The train to Füssen takes about two hours, and direct departures run about every two hours; otherwise you change at Buchloe or Kaufbeuren. From Füssen, bus 73 or 78 reaches Hohenschwangau in 8 to 10 minutes. From there, the walk up to Neuschwanstein takes 30 to 40 minutes, or you pay for the shuttle or a horse-drawn carriage. Count 2.5 to 3 hours each way on your own. The castle tours on this list run 10 to 10.5 hours round trip.
The season changes the castle day more than the Dachau day. In winter, guided visits at Neuschwanstein run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with limited capacity, and the last access comes 30 to 45 minutes before closing. The Marienbrücke viewpoint, the most photographed angle on Neuschwanstein, is often closed in winter, and the shuttle may not run. The sources we read give different winter ticket-sale hours, so check the official Ticket Center rather than trusting a single hour from a blog.
Most tours on this list are shared coach or train departures with a guide. Two are built for smaller groups: the private Dachau tour and the VIP castle day. Both cost more per person than the shared formats. If the visit matters more to you than the price, those two give you more room to ask questions and to slow down.

You meet under the Glockenspiel at Marienplatz, in front of the Tourist Information, and the tour runs about five hours with the train from Munich. Confirmation is instant. Only 26 of the 60 days in our window are open, so choose your date first, then plan the rest of the day around it. If the guide matters more to you than the price, this is the Dachau tour to book.
- Licensed memorial guide for the visit

2. Full-Day Dachau Memorial Tour
Pick this one for a longer day at the memorial. At six hours, it is the longest Dachau option on the list, and it has the lowest starting price in the Dachau group: $46.24 to $51.38 per adult for two travelers in our window. You meet a professional Dachau guide at Marienplatz, and the listing asks you to arrive 10 minutes early. The transfer is a shared round trip, so you do not organize the train yourself. Food and drinks are not included, so pack water and a snack. Fifty-one of the 60 days in our window are open.
- The longest Dachau option, at about six hours
- Shared round-trip transfer, meeting at Marienplatz
- Food and drinks not included

3. Dachau Memorial Half-Day, Early Start
This is the choice for travelers who want to start early. The group leaves from Karlsplatz (Stachus), and the listing says the early departure makes for a quieter visit. At 4.91 from 1,152 reviews, it is one of the top-rated Dachau tours on the list. Round-trip transport by train and shuttle bus is included, so you do not work out the local leg yourself. Lunch is not included, so eat before you leave or pack something for the return. At about five hours, the rest of your day stays open.
- Early start from Karlsplatz (Stachus)
- Round trip by train and shuttle bus
- Lunch not included

4. Neuschwanstein Castle Late-Start Tour
Choose this tour for a late-start day with skip-the-line service at the castles. It has a lower starting price than the other castle tours on the list, at $76.51 per adult for two travelers, but read the inclusions first. Castle admission and the reservation fee are not included, and neither is lunch. Budget for the castle ticket separately, and check its current price on the official Hohenschwangau Ticket Center site before you book. The listing shows departures on 24 of the 60 days in our window, so choose the date first, then check the castle ticket for that day.
- Late start, with skip-the-line service
- Castle admission and reservation fee not included
- Open on 24 of the 60 days in our window

5. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in One Day

The coach is modern and air-conditioned, and a live English-speaking guide travels with you. Parking fees are included. It is the only castle tour on the list with all 60 days open in our window, at 4.90 from 105 reviews. The listing comes in two versions, with or without castle tickets, so read which one you are booking before you pay. Meet at the bus stop in front of the Fielmann eyewear store in Munich.
- Two castles on the same hill in one day
- Live English-speaking guide on the coach
- Two versions: with or without castle tickets

6. VIP Tour of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof
This is the premium castle option, at $222.66 per adult for two travelers, the highest price of the four castle tours. The listing includes skip-the-line entry to both castles, and a professional English-speaking guide leads a smaller group over the 10.5-hour day. Its Venus Grotto entry is listed only until October 15, 2026, which ends before our window of October 25 to December 23, 2026. Do not count on the grotto for a late-autumn or winter visit. If the grotto is your reason to book, check the season on the listing first; the listing’s own end date already rules it out for the dates we checked.
- Skip-the-line entry to both castles listed
- The highest-priced castle option on the list
- Venus Grotto entry listed only until October 15, 2026

7. Private Dachau Memorial Tour with a Guide
This is the only private format on the list. A certified English-speaking private guide meets you at Munich Hauptbahnhof, in front of track 21, and the train tickets from Munich are included. At four hours, it is the shortest Dachau tour here, and at $251.21 per adult for two travelers it is the most expensive tour on the list. Open dates cover 59 of the 60 days in our window, and free cancellation is listed. The listing says confirmation is instant, then manual, so the booking is not final the moment you pay. Allow for that before you build a tight schedule around the visit.
- Certified English-speaking private guide
- Train tickets from Munich included
- Confirmation instant, then manual

8. Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Day Trip
This is the castle day trip with the most reviews on the list, 2,962, which puts its 4.79 rating on a large sample. It covers Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, two of King Ludwig II’s palaces. The coach leaves from Karlsplatz (Stachus), by the fountains, and the day includes a sightseeing stop in Oberammergau. An audio guide at Neuschwanstein is part of the listing. Food and drinks are not included, so pack a lunch for a day of 10.5 hours. Open dates cover 59 of the 60 days in our window.
- Sightseeing stop in Oberammergau included
- Audio guide at Neuschwanstein
- Food and drinks not included

9. Dachau Memorial Tour by Train, with Round-Trip Transport
This is the most-reviewed tour on the list, with 6,183 reviews, so its rating rests on a long track record. Its 4.75 is the lowest rating in the Dachau group. Round-trip transport from Munich is included, and a licensed guide covers the memorial. The meeting point is the tour office at Dachauer Straße 4, so check the address on the listing before you set out. At $60.52 per adult for two travelers, it is the third-lowest price in the Dachau group, and 57 of the 60 days in our window are open. If you want the highest rating in the Dachau group, see card 1.

Getting to Dachau
The S2 commuter train leaves from Munich Hauptbahnhof and reaches Dachau in about 20 to 25 minutes, without a change. From the station, bus 726 covers the rest of the way to the memorial in less than 10 minutes. Door to door, allow 40 to 60 minutes each way. Several group tours on this list include round-trip transport, so check the listing before you plan the connection yourself. The Marienplatz and Karlsplatz departures start in the city centre, so for those tours the trip out to Dachau is part of the booking.
Visiting the memorial
The memorial is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed on December 24. Admission is free, and the memorial recommends about half a day for a visit. The visit is emotionally demanding, and it is a place of remembrance, so plan your day with that in mind. Bring a warm layer for the late-autumn and winter dates in our window.
Getting to the castles without a tour
Plan the castle day in three legs. The train to Füssen takes about two hours. Bus 73 or 78 takes 8 to 10 minutes to Hohenschwangau. Then decide how you will reach Neuschwanstein: the walk takes 30 to 40 minutes uphill, and the paid shuttle or horse-drawn carriage saves the climb, which matters for anyone with limited mobility. On the castle tours, the shuttle and the carriage are paid extras on the day, not part of the tour price, so the choice of how to reach the castle is one you make on the day.
Tickets and winter hours
Castle tickets are sold through the official Hohenschwangau Ticket Center. The sources we read give different ticket-sale hours for the winter, so do not rely on one site or one brochure. Check the Ticket Center the week before your visit. In winter, the guided visits at Neuschwanstein are fewer and run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Marienbrücke viewpoint is often closed, and the shuttle may not run. Neuschwanstein is closed on January 1 and on December 24, 25 and 31, all outside our window, so check the calendar if your dates move.
Meals, drinks and tips
Check each listing before you book, because the sources we read do not agree on every case. On the early-start listing, lunch is the one exclusion named. The castle tours run 10 to 10.5 hours, so a packed lunch is a sensible idea unless the listing says otherwise. For tips on the castle tours, the information we checked does not settle the question, so ask the operator before the day.
Choosing by profile
First visit, one day: the guided Dachau tour with train (card 1) has the highest rating of the Dachau tours. Couple with a free afternoon: the early-start Dachau tour (card 3) leaves the rest of your day open. Two castles in one day: the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau day (card 5) covers both, with all 60 days open in our window. Small budget: the full-day Dachau tour (card 2) starts at $46.24 per adult, and at six hours it is the longest Dachau option. Limited mobility: the shuttle and the carriage are paid extras on the day, not part of the tour price, so budget for them or plan the 30 to 40 minute climb on foot; the half-day Dachau formats keep the day shorter. Private or slower pace: the private Dachau tour (card 7) is the only private format on the list.
Frequently asked questions
Which Munich day trip is rated highest?
The highest rating on this list belongs to the guided Dachau memorial tour with train, rated 4.98 from 1,021 reviews. The lowest rating, 4.75, belongs to the Dachau tour with round-trip transport, but it has more than 6,000 reviews, the most of any product here. Ratings are a snapshot from October 11, 2026, and they can move as new reviews come in. See the guided tour.
How long does it take to get from Munich to Dachau?
The S2 train from Munich Hauptbahnhof reaches Dachau in about 20 to 25 minutes, without a change. From the station, bus 726 takes less than 10 minutes to reach the memorial. Door to door, allow 40 to 60 minutes each way. Several group tours include round-trip transport, so check the inclusions on the listing before you plan the connection yourself.
Is entry to the Dachau memorial free?
Yes. Admission to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is free. The site is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed on December 24. The tours on this list are paid products sold through Viator, and the memorial itself charges no admission. The memorial recommends allowing about half a day for a visit.
Can I visit Neuschwanstein without a tour?
Yes, but plan 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Take the train to Füssen, which takes about two hours, then bus 73 or 78 to Hohenschwangau. From there, walk 30 to 40 minutes uphill or take the paid shuttle or carriage. Buy your castle ticket through the official Ticket Center, and check the winter hours first, because guided visits are limited. The organized tours on this list cover the same ground in 10 to 10.5 hours.
Is Venus Grotto included in the VIP castle tour?
Not for a visit in the window we checked. The VIP listing includes Venus Grotto entry only until October 15, 2026, which ends before October 25 to December 23, 2026. The official Linderhof page lists the grotto as open from April 15 to October 15. A 2026 reopening was reported in the press, but we could not confirm it on the official page. If the grotto is your reason to book, confirm the season on the listing before you choose a date.
Are these prices valid after December 2026?
No. We checked every price and open date on October 11, 2026, for departures from October 25 to December 23, 2026, and nothing in this article covers a later date. Prices are per adult for two travelers and can change at any time. Before you book, check the exact date on Viator, because the open days range from 24 to 60 across the nine tours.
