A guided shared day tour is the best value for most first-time visitors: $41.71 to $76.02 per adult for two travelers, with transport and entrance listed in the inclusions. Private tours cost $75.19 to $189.99 per adult. Prices were checked for October 25 to December 23, 2026, and may change.

Searching for Teotihuacan tickets usually means choosing between three purchases that end at the same gate: a bare entrance voucher, a group day tour with transport and a guide, or a private car and driver. The phrase « skip the line » appears on all three, which is why the choice is harder than the search results suggest. This guide compares the ten Teotihuacan tours we kept after checking the Viator catalogue for Mexico City. It explains what each format really includes, how early it gets you through the gate, and what the whole day costs once the commute is counted. If you want the shared option with the largest review base, start with the morning-or-afternoon shared tour, which has nearly 10,000 reviews and a 4.86 rating.

Two notes before you read on. First, the prices are a snapshot, not a forecast. We checked them on October 11, 2026, for two adults and departures between October 25 and December 23, 2026. The figures are 2026 prices, and they will move, so confirm the live price before you pay. Second, scope: our Best Day Trips from Mexico City guide ranks trips to several destinations. This article only looks at tickets and tour formats for one site. Four tours appear in both places, and here they are described by format, not by rank.

Why the ticket choice matters more than the ticket price

The Pyramid of the Sun rising above the open archaeological zone of Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan is a large pre-Hispanic city northeast of Mexico City. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1987. Its best-known monuments are the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, the Avenue of the Dead and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl. The name the Aztecs gave the city is usually glossed as « place where the gods were made » (Wikipedia).

The site is outside the city, and travel guides describe a drive of roughly an hour or more each way, depending on traffic. That is why the door-to-door day matters more than the length of the tour. A five-and-a-half-hour tour can take most of a day once the commute is counted, and a shared tour that collects you from a hotel saves you the trip in and out, while setting the start time for you. The valley sits well above sea level, the main axis is a long open avenue with little shade, and the pyramids have steep steps. Bring a hat, water and shoes with grip. No special fitness is needed to walk the main axis, but climbing a pyramid is a different effort.

Travel guides point to the drier months as the usual time to visit (Champion Traveler). The window priced in this article runs from late October to late December. Early mornings are generally cooler and quieter, while midday is when the large groups arrive. That pattern is the reason several of the tours below start before 8 a.m.

Which format you are actually buying

Teotihuacan tickets come in five formats, and the phrase « skip the line » covers all of them. A bare entrance voucher is sold by resellers. A reseller listing seen in search results on October 11, 2026 shows an entry-only voucher at about $14 per adult (Expedia). The Viator catalogue for Mexico City has no entry-only product in our shortlist, so we do not recommend one. Guided shared tours add transport from Mexico City and a guide, and they make up the largest group in the table below. Early-access and « no commercial stops » tours change when you arrive. Combined tours add a second stop, such as the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe or a lunch. Private tours put a car and a guide at your disposal for a higher price per person.

Our rule is to choose by the question you have rather than the label on the listing. Ask three things. Is the entrance inside the price? Do you need to be on site before the large groups? Do you want the transport handled for you? Those three answers narrow the ten tours to two or three.

The 10 tours compared: price, rating and availability

Every row below comes from the same availability check on October 11, 2026, for two adults. The price is the lowest per-adult figure the check found, and the range shows where the price depends on the departure option. The rating and review count come from the same product page. The entrance column answers the first of the three questions in the previous section: whether the entrance is in the price.

1. Shared pyramids tour, morning or afternoon

Rating 4.86 (9967 reviews) 5 h 30 min $49.00 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

This is the tour we would send a first-time visitor to. It has the largest review base of any single-site shared product in our pool, nearly 10,000 reviews at 4.86, and it offers a morning and an afternoon departure. The supplier lists morning pickups between 7:35 and 8:15 a.m. and afternoon pickups between 12:25 and 1:00 p.m., depending on the meeting point. Round transport from Mexico City, an in-person guide inside the archaeological zone and access to the zone are included, along with water, coffee and a cereal bar. That is the right mix if you want the logistics handled without paying for a private car. The trade-off is that you share the day with a group, so you do not control the pace. If an early entry matters more than the price, the dawn and early-access tours below are a better fit. Gratuities are not listed in the supplier payload, so ask the operator before you assume they are covered.

2. Dawn VIP tour, no commercial stops

Rating 4.9 (959 reviews) 6 h $41.71 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

This is the lowest price in the table, at $41.71 per adult for two travelers, and it is built around timing rather than extras. The title promises no commercial stops, so the morning is meant for the site rather than for shops. Meeting points are spread across central Mexico City: outside a Sanborns, a Starbucks, a hotel, a Churrería El Moro and a Randy’s Donuts, with morning departures from 7:20 to 8:00 a.m. depending on the meeting point. The supplier payload does not say which stops are dropped, so ask the operator before you book if a particular stop matters to you. The package includes an on-site guide, the entrance to the archaeological site and an air-conditioned vehicle. Tips are not included, and food is not in the inclusions list, so plan lunch separately. If you want to beat most of the group traffic on a budget, this is the product to compare with the early-access tours that follow. Six hours is a full morning, so keep the afternoon free.

3. Early-access express

Rating 4.92 (521 reviews) 5 h $64.60 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

This product is built around arriving before the first tour buses, and the listing says so. The meeting point is not a fixed corner. The operator coordinates one with you the day before, usually around Roma or near the Angel of Independence, and you need to be there by 6:40 a.m. That is the earliest start among the ten, and it is the price of getting in before the crowds. The package covers the entrance fee, an air-conditioned vehicle, a bottle of water and a granola bar. The inclusions list does not mention a guide, so check that detail on the product page if a guide matters to you. At $64.60 per adult it costs more than the dawn tour, and its 4.92 rating comes from 521 reviews, a smaller base than the large combined tours. Choose it when the first hour on site is the reason you are booking, and when a 6:40 a.m. start is manageable for you.

  • Entrance fee included
  • Start from about 6:40 a.m.

4. Early-access small group, mezcal and food

Rating 4.85 (196 reviews) 6 h $44.50 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

This is the small-group version of the early start, with a six-hour day at $44.50 per adult. The title promises mezcal and food, but the inclusions list names a certified guide, an air-conditioned vehicle and the official entrance fee. It does not name a tasting or a meal, so read the product page before you assume the mezcal and food are in the price. Meeting points are spread around the central hotel district: outside a Sanborns at 8:00 a.m., outside a Starbucks on Reforma at 7:50 a.m., near the Angel of Independence at 7:45 a.m., outside a Churrería El Moro at 7:30 a.m., and outside a Randy’s Donuts at 7:20 a.m., depending on the option you choose. Gratuities are excluded. The rating is 4.85 from 196 reviews, the smallest base among the early-access products, so read the most recent comments before you book. Choose this one for a smaller group and an early start that still gets you on site before the large tours.

5. Pyramids, Basilica and Tlatelolco, with lunch

Rating 4.8 (12410 reviews) 9 h $55.25 to $65.00 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

This is the most reviewed group product in the table, with more than 12,000 reviews at 4.80, and it packs the most into one day: the pyramids, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a stop in Tlatelolco and a lunch. The lunch depends on the departure. A Mexican buffet comes with the 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. options, and a traditional barbacoa comes with the 10 a.m. option when you select it. Entrance to Teotihuacan, a professional guide and round transport from the meeting point are included, along with a tequila tasting. Drinks are excluded. Meeting points are MIGA Cafe at 8:20 a.m. or the Amigo Tours downtown meeting point at 7:30 a.m. The day runs about nine hours, so it works only if you can give the whole day to it. The price range reflects the departure option, so read the option before you choose the higher figure.

  • Entrance to Teotihuacan included
  • Buffet or barbacoa lunch, by option
  • Tequila tasting included

6. Three pyramids, hotel pickup, lunch at La Gruta

Rating 4.96 (785 reviews) 7 h 30 min $70.88 to $76.02 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

The title promises three pyramids, hotel pickup and lunch at La Gruta, a restaurant set in a natural cave. The inclusions do not match the title line for line. Bottled water, umbrellas or hats, an air-conditioned vehicle, the entrance ticket and a licensed guide are listed. The supplier also excludes food and drinks at the restaurant and a drop-off in the historic center, so the lunch may be a place you visit rather than a meal you have paid for. Read the lunch line before you book and ask what it covers. Pickup is confirmed by the supplier after booking, either at your hotel or at a central meeting point, so have your accommodation details ready. At seven and a half hours it is a long day, but its 4.96 rating from 785 reviews is among the strongest in the table for a combined day. Choose it if the cave setting matters to you and you are ready to pay for the food separately.

  • Entrance ticket included
  • Hats, umbrellas and bottled water

7. Private tour, City of the Gods

Rating 4.95 (2125 reviews) 1 to 5 h $139.99 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation Private tour

This is the private option with the largest review base in the table: more than 2,000 reviews at 4.95. Its tasting is the main feature of the day: the supplier lists pulque, tequila and mezcal, where the Tlatelolco day offers only a tequila tasting. That makes it a good fit for adults who want a drink in the day, and less useful if you do not drink. The entrance is not in the supplier’s inclusions, so check with the operator before you book whether admission is covered. We have not assumed it is. Lunch and gratuities are excluded. The supplier also lists an extra charge for pickups in Santa Fe, Tlalpan or Coyoacán, so give your pickup district when you book. The listed duration is one to five hours, which varies, so ask what the day will look like. The product is open on all 60 days in the window. Choose it when the private car and the tasting matter more to you than the group, and confirm admission before you pay.

8. Express private tour

Rating 4.96 (318 reviews) 4 to 5 h $151.39 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation Private tour

This is the express private day in the table: four to five hours, a private transfer, a certified private guide, bottled water and the entry tickets. Its 4.96 rating from 318 reviews puts it among the highest-rated private products here, and it costs $151.39 per adult. Two cautions apply. First, the product is open on 49 of the 60 days in our window, and the availability check does not say which 11 days are closed, so check the calendar before you commit to a date. Second, the supplier excludes travel insurance, gratuities, meals and additional stops not mentioned on the itinerary. If a particular site matters to you, ask for the stops in writing before you pay. Pickup is confirmed after booking. This is the choice if you want a private day without the length of the combined tours and the price fits your budget. If you also want the Basilica and hotel pickup, the next product covers both.

9. Private tour with Basilica and hotel pickup

Rating 4.93 (960 reviews) 6 h $189.99 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation Private tour

This is the most expensive product in the table, at $189.99 per adult, or $379.98 for two travelers. The price covers the most in a single booking: private transport, the entry tickets, hotel pickup and drop-off, travel insurance, bottled water and a private guide. The day adds the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the pyramids, so it covers two sites rather than one. The supplier excludes gratuities and soda. Choose it if you want hotel pickup, the Basilica stop and insurance handled in one booking, and the price fits your budget. The rating is 4.93 from 960 reviews. Compare it with the City of the Gods private tour, which costs $139.99 per adult, and decide whether the Basilica stop and the hotel pickup are worth the $50 difference per person.

10. Private tour with breakfast in a cave

Rating 4.8 (780 reviews) 5 to 6 h $75.19 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation Private tour

This is the lowest-priced private product in the table, at $75.19 per adult for two travelers. The day starts with a traditional breakfast in a cave, which the operator describes as exclusive to this tour. The listing also includes an interactive workshop that it says suits the whole family, round-trip transport from your accommodation, and entries to the site. The listing mentions going up the pyramids. Climbing has been restricted at times, so confirm what is open on the day. The supplier says transport can be shared during periods of high demand, so a private label does not always mean a private car. Confirm the transport type when you book. If you do not give a hotel address, the meeting point is the Angel of Independence. Tips are excluded. The rating is 4.80 from 780 reviews, and the product is open on all 60 days in the window. It suits families, and anyone who wants breakfast built into the plan.

Before you go: eSIM, insurance and flights

Flights are outside this guide. The tours above assume you are already in Mexico City, so if you are flying from the United States, compare fares on your own before you book the day. Two practical items are worth sorting out before you land.

Mobile data: Airalo eSIM

Teotihuacan is outside the city, and the meeting points for shared tours are scattered across central Mexico City. A working connection helps you find the pickup point and message your operator.

Several tours here exclude travel insurance or do not mention it at all. Nomad Insurance is one option to compare, so check the policy against the trips you plan.

Get covered

On the day: fees, Sunday, climbing and budget

The entrance fee

The foreign-visitor entrance fee is set by the national institute of anthropology and history (INAH). CDMX Secreta’s 2026 schedules and costs page gives about 210 pesos for a foreign adult (checked October 11, 2026), while a Civitatis listing gives 100 pesos, so the sources disagree. Confirm the fee at the gate, because sellers quote older figures. Carry some pesos as well, because some sellers take cash only.

The Sunday rule for US visitors

Free Sunday admission applies to Mexican citizens and foreign residents, with proof of residence. It does not apply to US tourists, who pay the standard foreign-visitor fee on any day of the week. Plan your budget on that basis, and do not plan a Sunday visit around free entry.

Climbing the pyramids

Climbing has been restricted at times. CDMX Secreta reported that the first level of the Pyramid of the Moon reopened in May 2025, and news reports on closures and access changes in 2025 and 2026 appear in Mexico News Daily and Mundo Ejecutivo CDMX. We could not confirm today’s status of each level, and we did not confirm the status of the Pyramid of the Sun. Do not plan a climb around it. Ask your guide or the gate which steps are open that day.

Budget for two

The dawn VIP tour, the cheapest product in the table, costs $83.42 for two adults. Add lunch if the tour excludes it, drinks, gratuities for the guide and driver, and the entrance fee if the product you choose does not include it. The private breakfast in a cave costs $150.38 for two adults, and the private tour with the Basilica costs $379.98. Set a budget per person and a tip per person before you choose.

Heat, altitude and tipping

The main axis is a long open avenue with little shade, so carry sun protection and water, and take the steep steps slowly. Visitors who come straight from sea level often feel the climb. Tipping is expected in Mexico for guides and drivers, and most products here exclude gratuities. Budget a tip per person, and ask the operator for the local norm if you are unsure.

Opening hours and entry rules

The tour start times are the operator’s, not the site’s, so check that your departure still leaves time to reach the site before the last admission. Confirm the hours at the gate, because they can change, and check your government’s travel advice for passport and entry requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book a Teotihuacan ticket in advance?

If you want a tour that includes the entrance, book it in advance to lock your date. Pickup is confirmed after booking for four of the tours, and prices can change. All ten tours show instant confirmation and free cancellation for a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. Check the cancellation line on the product page before you pay.

Is paying extra for skip-the-line access worth it?

The early-access tours, such as the express and the small-group early start, get you to the site before the large groups. A standard shared tour does not promise early entry. Compared with the dawn tour’s $41.71, the early starts cost $2.79 to $22.89 more per adult: $44.50 for the small-group early start and $64.60 for the early-access express. Compare the meeting time with your sleep schedule before you decide.

Which Teotihuacan tour is the cheapest?

The dawn VIP tour is the lowest price in the table at $41.71 per adult for two travelers, which comes to $83.42 for the pair. It runs about six hours and includes the entrance to the site, an on-site guide and an air-conditioned vehicle. Tips are not included, and food is not in the inclusions list. The shared pyramids tour costs $49.00 per adult and has the largest review base among the single-site shared options.

Is entry free on Sundays for American visitors?

No. Free Sunday admission applies to Mexican citizens and foreign residents of Mexico, with proof of residence. US tourists pay the standard foreign-visitor fee on Sundays as on other days. The rule is the one most often misread by visitors, so do not plan the budget around free entry. Check the current fee at the gate before you go.

Can I climb the pyramids on a tour?

Sometimes, but not reliably. Climbing has been restricted at times, and we could not confirm which pyramid, or which level, is open at the moment. Some listings mention going up the pyramids, so read the product page and ask the operator before you book. On the day, your guide or the gate has the final word on which steps are open.

Do the tour prices include lunch and tips?

Usually not. Gratuities are excluded on most products. Lunch is included only in some options: the Pyramids, Basilica and Tlatelolco day has a buffet at the 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. departures and a barbacoa at 10 a.m. Food is excluded on the cave lunch tour, and lunch is excluded on the City of the Gods private tour. Read the inclusions line for each product before you assume a meal is covered.

Which tour is best for a family?

For a family with children, the private breakfast in a cave tour is the best fit at $75.19 per adult, because the supplier describes its workshop as suitable for the whole family and includes round-trip transport from your accommodation. If you want hotel pickup, the Basilica stop and insurance in one booking, the private tour with hotel pickup costs $189.99 per adult. Check the physical demands and the pyramid steps before you book for young children.
