The top-rated day trips from Hanoi go to Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay. For two adults, Ninh Binh tours start at $38 per person and Ha Long Bay tours at $40, though that fare starts outside Hanoi; Hanoi-pickup Ha Long options run $48 to $76. The top-rated tour is card 3: 4.99 from 4,727 reviews, starting 6:30 a.m.

Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

Hanoi makes a good base for day trips, and most of them head in one of two directions: south to Ninh Binh, or east to Ha Long Bay. Choosing between the dozens of listings for those two areas is harder than it looks. Prices vary by departure point, the same tour can start at a hotel or at a pier, and the ratings alone do not tell you how long the day will be. We checked the Viator catalog for day trips from Hanoi and kept the tours that met three tests: a rating of at least 4.7, at least 100 reviews, and open dates for the whole window from October 26 to December 24, 2026. Ten tours passed. This guide compares them side by side, then goes card by card with the detail that helps you choose.

The split across areas comes from those filters, not from a judgment about other destinations. Five tours go to Ninh Binh, four to Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay, and one is a 9-hour craft village and city tour. Other places near Hanoi are not priced in this article.

Every price in this article is per adult, based on two travelers, because that is the basis the Viator data returns for each tour. A few tours also show a lower fare for an option that starts outside Hanoi. Where a Hanoi option was found, we show its price next to the lowest fare, so you can compare the number with the pickup you actually want. Hanoi departure prices were probed for November 25, 2026, and the rest of the window runs from October 26 to December 24, 2026.

Start with the comparison table below, then read the cards, which explain the pickup times, the extras, and the trade-offs that a table cannot show. The tour we would book first is the 6:30 a.m. Ninh Binh tour with a round-trip hotel transfer, card 3, which also has the highest rating on the list. The lowest price belongs to the craft village tour, card 10, which is a different kind of day.

Why Hanoi Day Trips Go to Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay

In Ninh Binh, karst peaks rise straight out of rice fields and a slow river. In Ha Long Bay, the same kind of peaks rise out of the sea. Both are close enough to Hanoi for a day trip, which is why they dominate the list of tours that Hanoi visitors book.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) puts the drive to Ninh Binh at 2.5 to 3 hours each way for a single site, according to its guide to the best day trips from Hanoi. The same guide gives 3.5 to 4 hours each way for a Ha Long Bay day cruise. Its transfer guide puts a private car at 2.5 to 3 hours and a standard bus at 3 to 3.5 hours, so the vehicle you book changes the length of the day as much as the boat does.

The two destinations have different histories. Hoa Lu was the ancient capital in the 10th century, and several Ninh Binh tours in this list include it. Trang An is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of caves, rivers, and rice fields, and its boat tours last between 2 and 4 hours depending on the route. Tam Coc is a shorter boat trip, about 2 hours round trip, through three caves, and its boats leave from the Van Lam pier, where tickets are sold. Mua Cave is the climb: roughly 486 to 500 steps up to a viewpoint over the valley, depending on the source.

The national tourism agency advises one site per day in Ninh Binh, a boat ride at Tam Coc or Trang An, and describes visiting several sites in one day as the most common mistake. Most of the Ninh Binh tours in this list do the opposite: they combine Hoa Lu, Tam Coc or Trang An, and Mua Cave in a single day. That works, but it is a long day; card 1 lists 11 hours. If you want the boat ride without rushing, choose the earliest published start, the 6:30 a.m. departure of card 3.

Ha Long Bay is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its limestone islands are the setting for the Ha Long cruises on this list. A typical day trip is long. Depending on the vehicle, the transfer takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way, and card 7 is a 5-hour cruise on its own. Lan Ha Bay, a neighboring bay reached from Cat Ba Island or Hai Phong, has its own card in the list below.

The choice between the two areas comes down to the kind of day you want. Ninh Binh suits travelers who want temples, caves, and a boat ride through limestone scenery, and who want to be back in Hanoi by evening. Ha Long Bay suits travelers who want the open bay, a cruise with a swim or a kayak, and who accept a long day: on the listings we checked, the hotel pickup is between about 7:00 and 8:40 a.m., and on the bus options the return to Hanoi is around 8:30 to 9:00 p.m., according to one operator. Neither is the better trip in general. They are different trips, and the cards below spell out the differences.

1. Ninh Binh Day Trip with Tam Coc Boat Ride

Rating 4.97 (9108 reviews) 11 hours listed From $83 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This is the Ninh Binh tour with the most reviews on this list, and one of the longest days on it at 11 hours on the listing. A limousine van collects you in the Hanoi Old Quarter between about 7:00 and 7:30 a.m., and the route runs through Hoa Lu, a climb of about 500 steps at Mua Cave, a set lunch at a local bungalow, and a sampan trip through the caves at Tam Coc. Bicycles for the countryside ride are included, which matters if you want to see the villages and not only the boat. The listing is clear that pickup outside the Old Quarter is not part of the price, so check your hotel’s location before you book. This is also the card for travelers who want the full set of Ninh Binh sites in a single booking. If you are short on energy for the stairs, read the Mua Cave section below before you commit to a long day.

  • Limousine van pickup in the Old Quarter, about 7:00 to 7:30 a.m.
  • Lunch, bicycles and all listed entrance fees included
  • Free cancellation on the listing

2. Ninh Binh Day Tour with Boat and Bike

Rating 4.93 (5162 reviews) Starts 7:45 a.m. From $38 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This is the lowest-priced Ninh Binh tour on the list, at $38 per adult, and its inclusions are more complete than the price suggests. A shuttle collects you from the Hanoi Old Quarter, and the tour includes an English-speaking guide, lunch, bottled water, and 30 minutes of village cycling. The stops are Hoa Lu, Mua Cave, and Tam Coc. The listing does not publish a total duration, so check the schedule on the tour page before you plan dinner. The price has a catch that matters for the budget. Entrance tickets at Hoa Lu, Mua Cave, and Tam Coc are optional and paid separately, about 20,000 VND, 150,000 VND, and 250,000 VND per person according to the listing. The listing adds a $15 per person surcharge on January 1, April 30, May 1, September 2, and December 31, and a Lunar New Year surcharge from February 5 to 9, 2027, whose amount is not published. If you can accept a shared shuttle and a set program, this is a budget way to see the three main Ninh Binh sites in one day.

  • Shuttle pickup in the Old Quarter, start 7:45 a.m.
  • Lunch and bottled water included
  • Optional entrance fees paid on site, about $0.80 to $10 each

3. Ninh Binh Highlight and Hidden Gem

Rating 4.99 (4727 reviews) Starts 6:30 a.m. From $95 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This is the card we would start with: it has the highest rating of the Ninh Binh tours, 4.99 from 4,727 reviews, and a 6:30 a.m. start that ties the private tour (card 5) for the earliest pickup on the list. That early start is the reason to choose it. The operator says the early departure avoids the heaviest city traffic, and a round-trip hotel transfer from the Old Quarter means you do not have to find your own way out of the center. The day mixes a 1.5-hour boat ride on Tam Coc, the Hoa Lu ancient capital, Bich Dong Pagoda, Mua Cave admission with hiking access, and a two-hour countryside ride on a scooter or a Jeep. Lunch is included, but tips, drinks, and personal expenses are not. Check the schedule and the vehicle on the tour page before you book, since the listing does not publish a total duration.

  • Round-trip hotel transfer from the Old Quarter, 6:30 a.m. start
  • 1.5-hour Tam Coc boat ride and Mua Cave access
  • Two-hour scooter or Jeep ride, lunch included

4. Ninh Binh Heritage Full Day with Buffet Lunch

Rating 4.97 (2981 reviews) Starts 7:30 a.m. From $51.66 per adult (2 travelers), lowest option Free cancellation

A buffet lunch with local specialties is the reason to consider this tour, and at $51.66 per adult it is the second-lowest price among the Ninh Binh tours. The pickup is the part to read closely. The listing offers three vehicle types: a 30-seat shuttle, a limousine for 19 to 22 people, and a small group of 9. The pickup point depends on the option you choose, and the departure is at 7:30 a.m. in every case. Confirm which vehicle you are booking before you pay. The listing includes the entrance fee, a shared boat, and air-conditioned transport. It leaves out alcoholic drinks, tips for the guide and the driver, and personal expenses. A Tết surcharge applies on the holiday days, with no amount published. Our check did not return a Hanoi departure price for this tour, so the $51.66 shown is the lowest price across all options, not a confirmed Hanoi fare. Ask the operator for the Hanoi pickup price before you pay.

5. Private Full-Day Tour to Ninh Binh

Rating 4.97 (689 reviews) Pickup 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. From $115 per adult (2 travelers) Private tour Free cancellation

If your group wants its own car and driver, this is the tour. The car is for your group only, and the pickup at your Hanoi hotel happens between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m., depending on the option. The drive to Ninh Binh takes about two hours. The listing covers Hoa Lu, Tam Coc or Trang An, and Mua Cave, with a private English-speaking guide, air-conditioned transport, and a Vietnamese lunch. Mua Cave climbing is included, and so is a bike ride through the countryside village at Tam Coc or Trang An. At $115 per adult, this is the highest starting price on the list, so price it for your full party. Drinks at lunch are not included. For a group that wants its own schedule rather than a shared shuttle, this is the card to compare first.

  • Private air-conditioned car and English-speaking guide for your group
  • Mua Cave climb and Hoa Lu, Tam Coc or Trang An entrances included
  • Vietnamese lunch; drinks at lunch extra

6. Ha Long Bay Day Tour with Titop Island

Rating 4.96 (3470 reviews) 12 hours (720 min) From $40 per adult (2 travelers), no Hanoi transfer Free cancellation

This is the Ha Long Bay option for travelers who want the bay, a cave, a kayak, and lunch in one full day. The lowest price, $40 per adult, comes with no transfer from Hanoi, so you need to reach the departure point yourself. The version that starts in Hanoi is the Titop option with a two-way bus, which we probed at $50 per adult for a November 25, 2026 departure. The listing includes lunch and brunch, a kayak or bamboo boat, and the entrance fees for the cave, the Titop island visit, and the kayaking. The bus makes a 20-minute stop on the way out, and the day ends after a long drive back. Drinks and water on the cruise are extra. Choose this card if you want a full day on the bay and do not mind a 12-hour program. Choose card 7 instead if you want a shorter cruise on a premium boat.

  • Lunch and brunch included
  • Kayak or bamboo boat and cave entrance included

7. Ha Long Bay 5-Star Day Cruise

Rating 4.89 (3911 reviews) 5-hour cruise From $40 per adult (2 travelers), Tuan Chau Marina Free cancellation

Choose this cruise if you want a premium boat rather than a budget one. The listing describes a 5-star vessel with onboard Jacuzzi access, a sunset party with tea, fruit and snacks, a buffet lunch, and kayaking or bamboo boat rowing. The lowest fare, $40 per adult, starts at Tuan Chau Marina at 11:00 a.m. and does not include a transfer from Hanoi. If you want the round trip from the Old Quarter, that option costs $48 per adult on our November 25, 2026 probe. Read the exclusions before you book. Drinks during the cruise are not included, nor are extra snacks or meals, or hotel pickup outside the Old Quarter. The listing adds holiday surcharges on January 1, April 30, May 1, December 24, and December 31, and a Lunar New Year surcharge from February 5 to 8, 2027. The amounts are not published, so check the calendar for those dates. The rating, 4.89, is the lowest of the four Ha Long and Lan Ha cards.

  • Jacuzzi access and sunset party onboard
  • Kayak or bamboo boat rowing included
  • Hanoi Old Quarter round trip as an option, $48 per adult

8. Ha Long Bay Day Cruise with Buffet Lunch

Rating 4.94 (2273 reviews) Departs 11:30 a.m. from Ha Long Bay From $48 per adult (2 travelers), Ha Long Bay departure Likely to sell out Free cancellation

This is a newer 5-star cruise, and the listing says it set sail in 2025. The program includes a welcome drink, a Jacuzzi pool and sundeck, a sunset party with tea, cakes, and fruit, a buffet lunch, and bottled water. Kayaking or bamboo boat fees and entrance fees are included. The floor price, $48 per adult, is for the departure from Ha Long Bay at 11:30 a.m., which is outside Hanoi. The Hanoi shuttle costs $57 per adult, and we probed that option for November 25, 2026. Viator flags this departure as likely to sell out. We do not know how many places remain, and our check showed the tour open on every day of the window, but if the date matters to you, book early. Beverages, gratuities, and hotel pickup outside the Old Quarter are not included. The listing also adds an $8 per person surcharge on the first three days of Lunar New Year.

9. Lan Ha Bay Full-Day Tour from Hanoi

Rating 4.97 (1282 reviews) About 3.5 hours of transfer from Hanoi From $43.20 per adult (2 travelers), from Cat Ba Free cancellation

Lan Ha Bay is a neighboring bay reached from Cat Ba Island or Hai Phong. This card suits travelers who want a different limestone bay rather than the Ha Long Bay cruises above. Two cautions apply. The lowest fare, $43.20 per adult, is the option that starts in Cat Ba Town, so it is not a departure from Hanoi. The journey begins at Beo Pier, the furthest tourist pier on Cat Ba Island, and the listing says the transfer from Hanoi takes around 3.5 hours: a bus to Got Pier, a short high-speed ferry, then a bus to the pier. Second, the Hanoi Old Quarter pickup is a separate option at $76 per adult on our November 25, 2026 probe. The program includes kayaking, swimming and sliding, a lunch on the cruise, a welcome drink, and bottled water. Read the transfer times against your flight or train before you choose the lowest fare. The listing carries a special-offer flag, so confirm the fare on the tour page before you pay.

  • Kayak, swimming and sliding included

10. Incense Village, Hat Making and City Tour

Rating 4.95 (1508 reviews) 9 hours (540 min), starts 7:45 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. From $27.42 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This small-group tour is a city and craft village day rather than a boat trip, and it has the lowest price on the list: $27.42 per adult for two travelers. The listing runs 9 hours and starts at 7:45 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. It includes lunch, bottled water, a conical hat, all fees and taxes, and air-conditioned transport. The highlight is a lacquer painting workshop at Ha Thai village, where a local artisan introduces the craft and helps you paint your own piece. The listing says Ha Thai’s lacquerware has been made since the 17th century. The group is capped at 15 travelers. A lacquer piece taken home is charged by size, and the price of that piece is not included. Meals beyond the lunch are extra. Choose this card if you want a day that is different from the boat tours, or if your budget rules out the longer trips.

  • Small group, maximum 15 travelers
  • Lacquer painting workshop at Ha Thai village
  • Lunch, bottled water and a conical hat included

Practical Tips for Day Trips from Hanoi

Timing the Mua Cave climb

Mua Cave is a stop on several Ninh Binh tours in this list, and it is the one that tests your legs. The climb is roughly 486 to 500 steps, depending on the source, and the viewpoint at the top looks over the river and the karst peaks. The national tourism agency advises climbing before 8 a.m. or after 4 p.m., when the midday heat is strongest. Wear closed shoes with grip, carry water, and allow more time on the way down than on the way up, because the steps are steep. One guide estimates about an hour for the descent once you add photo stops. Card 1’s itinerary reaches Mua Cave around 10:30 a.m., so ask the operator whether the climb can be scheduled earlier. If the stairs are a problem for anyone in your group, ask the operator before you book whether the climb is optional and what the alternative stop looks like.

Money, tips and entrance fees

Most tours include the main entrance fees, but several list optional tickets that you pay on site. In the listing for the boat-and-bike tour, Hoa Lu costs 20,000 VND (about $0.80), Mua Cave 150,000 VND (about $6), and the Tam Coc boat 250,000 VND (about $10) per person. Check which fees are included in the listing you choose, and carry dong in small notes for purchases and tips. Exchange rates move, so treat the dollar figures here as a rough guide.

Tips are not always in the price, so check each listing’s inclusions. Travel operators such as Paradise Vietnam suggest 50,000 to 100,000 VND per day for a driver, about $2 to $4 per person, and Pickyourtrail gives a range that goes up to 150,000 VND. The national tourism agency suggests 100,000 to 150,000 VND per traveler per day for a group guide, roughly $4 to $6, and 200,000 to 400,000 VND per day for a private guide, roughly $8 to $16. Tipping is shared per person and per day, and it is a thank-you for good service, not a fixed charge, so adjust the amount to the day you had.

Paperwork and visas

U.S. citizens need a visa to enter Vietnam. Commercial visa guides, read from search excerpts, describe a 90-day e-visa priced at $25 for a single entry or $50 for multiple entries, with a processing time of 3 to 5 working days, so allow at least a week before you travel. We did not check these figures against the Vietnamese government portal. The national tourism agency warns about fake visa sites, so apply only through the Vietnamese government portal and not a third-party site. We could not open the U.S. State Department’s Vietnam advisory page (HTTP 403 at the time of checking), so check the current entry rules there and on the Vietnamese portal before you pay for any tour.

Season and weather

October and November are the driest and coolest months of the year, and the national tourism agency recommends them. For Ha Long Bay, a cruise operator cites November through January for clearer skies and calmer seas. Summer is typhoon season, and cruises can be canceled at short notice for safety reasons, so check the operator’s weather policy before you book a boat day in the summer months. Tết in early February 2027 brings crowds, and the Vietnam Tourism boat guide advises avoiding it for Ninh Binh.

Which tour fits which traveler

Families with young children will find the shorter Ninh Binh drive easier than a 12-hour Ha Long Bay day with a bus transfer each way. Ask the operator whether the Mua Cave climb can be skipped before you book, since the stairs are the main physical demand of the Ninh Binh cards.

Travelers who want the most-reviewed Ninh Binh day should read card 1, the 11-hour day with a Tam Coc boat ride and bicycles. Those who want the boat ride without a rush should choose card 3, which starts at 6:30 a.m. Couples who want a private car can look at card 5, and those who want a different bay can look at card 9 for Lan Ha Bay.

Travelers on a tight budget can start at $27.42 with the craft village tour (card 10), or at $38 with the Ninh Binh shuttle (card 2). Count the optional entrance fees and the tips into the budget. A private tour, at $115 per adult, costs about four times the craft village tour, the cheapest option on the list.

Travelers with limited mobility should read the Mua Cave climb and the boat transfers closely. The boats at Tam Coc and Trang An are low and entered from a pier, and the climb is steep. The listings in this article do not say which option offers step-free access, so ask each operator before you book, and ask for a private car if the shuttle’s step up is a concern.

Before you book

Book the departure you want, not the cheapest one. Compare the pickup point, the start time, and the vehicle in each listing, and note the cancellation deadline on the tour page. If your hotel is outside the Old Quarter, ask the operator to confirm the pickup in writing, because several listings say pickup outside the center is not included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Hanoi day trip has the best rating?

The Ninh Binh Highlight and Hidden Gem tour has the highest rating on this list: 4.99 out of 5 from 4,727 reviews, at $95 per adult for two travelers. It starts at 6:30 a.m. with a round-trip hotel transfer. The Ninh Binh Day Trip with Tam Coc Boat Ride has the most reviews, 9,108, at 4.97. Both figures are from the October 12, 2026 check. See card 3.

How much does a day trip from Hanoi cost?

Across the ten tours, the lowest fare per tour runs from $27.42 per adult for the 9-hour craft village tour to $115 per adult for the private Ninh Binh tour. The median of the lowest fares is $45.60 per adult. Shared Ninh Binh tours cost $38 to $95. The four Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha tours start at $40 to $48 from a departure outside Hanoi, and their Hanoi pickup versions cost $48 to $76 per adult.

Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay: which should I choose?

Choose Ninh Binh if you want a shorter drive, about 2 to 3 hours each way, and a boat ride through limestone caves on the Tam Coc or Trang An routes. Choose Ha Long Bay for a cruise with kayaking, on a longer day: the drive is about 2.5 to 4 hours each way, and the Ha Long listings run from a 5-hour cruise (card 7) to a 12-hour program with a bus transfer (card 6).

Do I need to book these tours in advance?

Book ahead for the dates you want, especially for the Diamond Era Ha Long cruise, which Viator flags as likely to sell out. Our check showed all ten tours open on every day from October 26 to December 24, 2026, but availability and prices change. Some listings add holiday surcharges on dates in that window: card 7 lists December 24 and 31, and card 2 lists December 31. Check each listing’s calendar before you commit to those dates.

Is free cancellation included?

All ten tours show free cancellation in the Viator data we checked on October 12, 2026. The deadline is set on each listing, not in this article, so read the cancellation terms on the tour page before you pay. Keep the confirmation email with those terms.

Is tipping expected on these tours?

Some of these tours exclude tips, so check each listing. Paradise Vietnam suggests 50,000 to 100,000 VND per day for a driver, about $2 to $4 per person, and Pickyourtrail gives up to 150,000 VND. The national tourism agency suggests 100,000 to 150,000 VND per traveler per day for a group guide, about $4 to $6, and 200,000 to 400,000 VND per day for a private guide. Adjust the amount to the day you had.

Do I need a visa for these day trips?

U.S. citizens need a visa for Vietnam, and the day trips do not change that. Commercial visa guides describe a 90-day e-visa at $25 for a single entry or $50 for multiple entries, processed in 3 to 5 working days. Apply only through the Vietnamese government portal, since the national tourism agency warns about fake visa sites, and confirm the current rules before you travel. This article is a travel guide, not official advice on entry requirements.
