Munich’s municipal Christmas market, on Marienplatz, runs from Friday 20 November to Thursday 24 December 2026, with 137 stalls. It opens from 10 am to 9 pm Monday to Saturday, and from 10 am to 8 pm on Sunday. No mulled wine price has been published for 2026.
Checked on against the official sources cited (muenchen.de and christkindlmarkt-muenchen.de).
According to the City of Munich, the municipal Christmas market on Marienplatz drew around 3.2 million visitors in 2025. That figure is an estimate, not a count (Rathaus-Umschau of 23 December 2025). This page gathers what has been published for the 2026 edition: dates, hours day by day, highlights, and what is not confirmed yet.
The city market in 2026: what changes
The official Munich Christmas market takes over Marienplatz and Rindermarkt, facing the Neues Rathaus. The City organises it through its labour and economy department, the Referat für Arbeit und Wirtschaft (RAW), which publishes the dates and the review of each edition. The 2026 edition stands out for its early calendar: it opens on Friday 20 November, the Friday before Totensonntag (Sunday 22 November 2026), while several guides still give 24 November.

The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz
The market has 137 stalls for 2026, according to the City of Munich’s page. The wooden stalls sell decorations, toys, candles, nativity scenes and blown glass, with seasonal food and drink: mulled wine, Glühpunsch, Bratwurst, gebrannte Mandeln (candied almonds), Lebkuchen and Christstollen.
Highlights
- A municipal market in the heart of the city, facing the Neues Rathaus.
- Free access: neither the City nor the organiser mentions an entry fee.
- Children’s workshops from 29 November to 13 December 2026, with the Himmelswerkstatt.
If you’d rather be guided, a food tour of the Christmas market takes you round the old town with tastings. According to the Viator product listing (checked on 12 October 2026), all the food and mulled wine are included, and the tour lasts 3 hours (180 minutes according to the listing).
Dates and hours for 2026, day by day
The hours below are the ones published by the organiser for the 2026 season. They apply to the market itself: entry is free, with no ticket or booking needed.
| Day | Hours 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Saturday | 10 am to 9 pm | christkindlmarkt-muenchen.de |
| Sunday | 10 am to 8 pm | christkindlmarkt-muenchen.de |
| Thursday 24 December | 10 am to 2 pm | christkindlmarkt-muenchen.de |
| Friday 20 November (opening) | Not specified | muenchen.de |

On 24 December the market closes at 2 pm. That is the shortest window of the year, so if you plan to shop, aim for the morning.
One point is still open. Some guides announce a closure on Sunday 22 November 2026, Totensonntag. Neither the City of Munich nor the organiser has confirmed it on the pages checked on 12 October 2026. Don’t plan around that date on the strength of a guide alone, and check the organiser’s site the day before.
For the light, the sun sets around 4:20 pm near the solstice, according to WeatherSpark (data from Munich airport, not the city centre).
Mulled wine, mug and deposit: what is published and what isn’t
Neither the City of Munich nor the organiser publishes the price of Glühwein or the deposit amount for 2026. The figures in circulation come from guides and the press: they are given here as indications, with their dates.
| Year | Location | Mug | Deposit | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | Eiszauber, Stachus | €10 (0.25 l) | €5 | Abendzeitung |
| 2016 | Tollwood | €4.50 | €2 | Abendzeitung |
| 2022 | Marienplatz | €5 to €6 | Not specified | Infranken |
| 2022 | Stachus (Eiszauber) | €10 | €3 | Infranken |
| 2026 | Main market, according to guides | €4 to €6 | €2 to €5 | Guides, unverified |
| 2026 | Marienplatz, official | Not published | Not published | City of Munich, organiser |
Source: Abendzeitung (2016) and Infranken (2022), checked on 12 October 2026. The 2026 lines do not come from any official source.
Between 2022 and 2026 we found no dated price at Marienplatz for 2023 to 2025. Treat the 2026 range as an order of magnitude, not a price list. We also found no published price for the Kinderpunsch, the alcohol-free version.
The mug and the deposit
The mug is sold with a deposit (Pfand), refunded at the stall where you bought it. Keeping the mug without returning it is described, in a December 2025 article relayed by Infranken, as theft under German criminal law (§ 246 StGB). Some stalls tolerate keeping it, others don’t. The simplest thing is to ask when you pay.
On the regulation side, the Verbraucherzentrale notes that since 1 January 2023, sellers of takeaway food and drinks must offer a reusable option. We found no official answer on how that rule applies to the temporary stalls of a Christmas market.

The Krampuslauf, the parade on 13 December
The parade leaves from Frauenplatz and Augustinerstraße and makes its way to the Altes Rathaus via the Viktualienmarkt, according to the organiser’s page for the 2026 Krampuslauf.
Watch the date. Some guides and a festival calendar still give 14 December, which is the 2025 edition. In 2025 the City counted around 70,000 spectators, according to the Rathaus-Umschau. That is a review of the past, not a forecast for 2026.
Highlights
- A date confirmed by the organiser for 2026: Sunday 13 December.
- A route through the Viktualienmarkt, the year-round food market in the centre.
- An afternoon outing, from 3 pm to 5 pm.
The Himmelswerkstatt workshops
The workshops are for children aged 6 to 12 and run from 29 November to 13 December 2026, according to the organiser. Their page gives neither daily hours nor how to sign up, so check before you go. In 2025 the edition welcomed 1,720 visitors over 18 days, free of charge, according to the City.
Music and the horns on 24 December
For 2026, the organiser announces Advent music from the Town Hall balcony, Sunday to Thursday, with no hours published. In 2024 the City gave 5:30 pm for this programme: a reference from the previous year, not a time for 2026. On 24 December, the Turmbläser played at noon in 2024 and 2025. That time is not confirmed for this year.
Getting to Marienplatz: transport and parking
The market is on the central square, served by the U3 and U6 metro lines and by the S-Bahn lines S1 to S8, at the Marienplatz stop. The City of Munich notes that there is no parking around the square and that cycling there is discouraged. The train is the best option.
From the airport
The trip from the airport is by S-Bahn, line S8: secondary sites estimate 35 to 40 minutes, a duration MVV has not confirmed. We could not check the official MVV page for the journey time or the fare, so look up the timetable and your ticket on the MVV site the day before you leave.
Other Munich markets in 2026
Munich has several Christmas markets outside Marienplatz. We only list here the dates confirmed by an official source or by the organiser: the others are flagged as such.
| Place | Dates 2026 | Hours 2026 | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pink Christmas, Stephansplatz | 20 November to 20 December | Monday to Friday 4 pm to 10 pm; Saturday and Sunday 2 pm to 10 pm | Confirmed by the organiser |
| Tollwood, Theresienwiese | 24 November to 23 December | Not specified | Dates confirmed by the City |
| Schwabing Christmas market, Münchner Freiheit | 27 November to 24 December (festival listing) | Not published for 2026 (2025: Monday to Friday 12 pm to 8:30 pm) | Not confirmed for 2026 |
| Münchner Eiszauber, Stachus | 2026/2027 season not published (2025/2026: 21 November to 11 January) | 2025/2026: 10:30 am to 10 pm | Not confirmed for 2026 |

Pink Christmas is at Stephansplatz, in the Glockenbachviertel area. Its hours come from the organiser: one tourist site announces an opening at noon at weekends, which the organiser does not confirm.
Tollwood is not a market in the strict sense but a cultural festival. According to the City, entry to the « Markt der Ideen » is free.
For a quieter market, guides point to the one at Schwabing, at Münchner Freiheit, and the one at Rotkreuzplatz, in Neuhausen. These are secondary suggestions: the City does not confirm a 2026 edition at Schwabing and only publishes the 2025 one. The Blutenburg market, in Obermenzing, is announced for 3 to 6 December 2026 by a tourist source.
Other events often mentioned, such as the Residenz Christmas village, the Mittelaltermarkt at Wittelsbacherplatz, the Christkindltram or the Chinesischer Turm, have no confirmed 2026 edition as of our research. Don’t add them to a programme without checking. To extend the trip, our guide to the Salzburg Christmas market 2026 compares another city in the region.
Budget: what a visit costs
The market is free to enter, so the budget depends mostly on food, shopping and transport.
- Entry: €0. Neither the City of Munich nor the organiser mentions an entry fee.
- Mulled wine: no price published for 2026. Undated guides quote €4 to €6 a mug, as a rough guide only.
- Deposit: €2 to €5 according to guides, refunded when you return the mug to the stall.
- Transport: an MVV ticket, whose fare we could not check against an official source.
- Guided food tour: from €150 per adult (based on 2 people), according to the Viator price checked on 12 October 2026. Food and mulled wine included, according to the product listing.
An afternoon at the market, step by step
A possible itinerary, an editorial suggestion that no source backs, to adapt to your timing: arrive early in the afternoon for shopping, then stay until dusk.
- Around 2 pm: walk the stalls on Marienplatz, starting with the decorations and nativity scenes, and shop without rushing.
- Around 3 pm: head to the Rindermarkt, on the Neues Rathaus side. If you want to carry on with a food market, go to the Viktualienmarkt, the year-round food market in the centre.
- Around 4:20 pm: sunset near the solstice, according to WeatherSpark. The market stays open until 9 pm Monday to Saturday.
- During your break: enjoy your mulled wine, then return the mug to the stall to get your deposit back.
- At the end of the day: head back by U-Bahn or S-Bahn, no car needed.
How long should you allow?
Pixidia estimate, not sourced from the City: allow one to one and a half hours for the market alone. If you book the guided food tour, the Viator listing gives 3 hours, checked on 12 October 2026.
Depending on your profile: family, couple, small budget
- Families: the Himmelswerkstatt welcomes 6 to 12 year olds from 29 November to 13 December, and the Krampuslauf on 13 December lasts two hours outdoors.
- Couples: the guided food tour is an all-in option, with tastings included according to the Viator listing. The market stays open until 9 pm Monday to Saturday, leaving time for an evening out.
- Small budget: entry is free, and one mug of mulled wine is enough for a first visit. Guides describe the neighbourhood markets, such as Rotkreuzplatz, as smaller and calmer.
- First time in Munich: start at Marienplatz late in the afternoon, then add a day trip, like those in our guide to day trips from Munich.
- Reduced mobility: we found no official information on stall accessibility. Contact the Munich tourist office before your visit.
What other guides don’t tell you
Here are the gaps between guides and official pages that change a visiting decision.
- The market opens on 20 November, not 24. Several guides and festival calendars still give 24 November. The City of Munich announces Friday 20 November 2026 as the first day of an early calendar (muenchen.de, checked on 12 October 2026).
- The Krampuslauf takes place on 13 December 2026. A festival calendar gives 14 December, the 2025 date. The organiser’s page gives Sunday 13 December, from 3 pm to 5 pm (christkindlmarkt-muenchen.de, checked on 12 October 2026).
- No mulled wine price is published for 2026. Guides show €4 to €6 with no date. The last dated price recorded at Marienplatz in the press goes back to 2022 (€5 to €6, according to Infranken). Neither the City nor the organiser gives a price (checked on 12 October 2026).
- Music on the balcony has no published time for 2026. Some guides mention a concert every day at 5:30 pm. The organiser says Sunday to Thursday, with no time, and 5:30 pm was the 2024 time (christkindlmarkt-muenchen.de, checked on 12 October 2026).
- The Himmelswerkstatt workshops run from 29 November to 13 December. A festival calendar lists 27 November to 14 December. The organiser gives 29 November to 13 December, for ages 6 to 12 (christkindlmarkt-muenchen.de, checked on 12 October 2026).
