Yes, if the dome is your reason to go: guided dome climbs start at $123.37 per adult for two travelers (card 2). Without the climb, a guided cathedral entrance starts at $41.12 (card 3). Ratings are close: 4.93 (card 2) against 4.85 (card 3).

Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

Before a first trip to Florence, the question comes up fast: is the Duomo worth paying for, or is the view from the piazza enough? The tickets sold for the cathedral differ a lot in price and in what they include. A plain entrance, a guided dome climb, a combined pass and a private visit are four different purchases, even when they all carry the word Duomo. We compared nine guided tours by formula rather than by one price.

The short answer depends on one thing: whether you want to climb Brunelleschi’s dome. The climb is sold as a reserved, timed entry, and the price gap between the two main choices follows it. Guided dome climbs start at $123.37 per adult for two travelers, and a guided entrance without the climb starts at $41.12. Every price comes from one source, checked on October 13, 2026, for dates from October 27 to December 25, 2026, with two adults.

If the dome is the goal, start with the guided dome climb with a reserved slot (card 1). It was open on 47 of the 60 days checked, against 6 for the skip-the-line climb (card 2). We could not read the official cathedral and Opera del Duomo sites when we checked, so official prices and rules are not quoted here.

Why the Florence Duomo is hard to judge by price

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, known as the Duomo, is the building most of these listings name. Its dome, Brunelleschi’s dome, is the climb most of these listings sell. The listings sell that climb as a reserved, timed entry, and the guided climb in card 1 quotes 463 steps to the top.

The word Duomo covers several products. Listings describe a Duomo Complex pass covering the cathedral and additional monuments. The pass lasts 72 hours on cards 2 and 4 and three days on card 1. A price next to the word Duomo can buy a view from the square, a dedicated entrance or a guided climb, so read the formula before the price.

Three details follow. The dome climb has its own reserved timed entry. The Baptistery is included in four of the nine listings (cards 1, 4, 5 and 8), and card 5 also names its Gates of Paradise, Ghiberti’s doors. Giotto’s bell tower is a climb of its own: European Traveler, an independent guide, gives about 414 steps and about 85 meters (roughly 280 feet), with no elevator.

The ratings do not separate the two main choices. The guided dome climb (card 1) has 4.89 from 562 reviews at $124.51 per adult. The guided entrance without the dome (card 3) has 4.85 from 452 reviews at $41.12. The $83.39 gap buys the climb, not a better rating.

Prices and availability checked on the Viator partner API on October 13, 2026, for October 27 to December 25, 2026 (60 days) and two adults. The price shown is the lowest per-adult price in that window. Prices can change.

Read the table by formula. The dome is included in tours 1, 2 and 5, is an option in tours 4 and 6, and is not listed for tours 3, 7, 8 and 9. Tours 7 and 9 are city days, and tour 8 is a private visit whose listing does not mention the dome. The days-available column counts the 60-day window checked, not every date: cards 2 and 3 were open on only 6 and 5 of those days.

1. Guided dome climb, small group

Rating 4.89 (562 reviews) 180 minutes From $124.51 per adult (based on 2 travelers), checked October 13, 2026 Free cancellation Open on 47 of 60 days checked

Choose this tour if climbing the dome is the reason you are going. The listing gives a reserved timed entry to the dome, 463 steps to the top, and a three-day Duomo Complex pass. A two-hour guided visit covers the Baptistery, the museum and the cathedral facade. Groups are capped at 15 on the standard option and at 8 on VIP, and the same climb can be booked as a private experience. The price for this listing starts at $124.51 per adult and depends on the formula, so check which one your price belongs to. The data we read do not list exclusions, so check the full inclusions on the booking page. The meeting point is in front of the Lindt chocolate shop on the left side of the cathedral, where the guide carries an orange flag.

  • Reserved timed entry to the dome, 463 steps
  • Groups of up to 15, VIP up to 8, or private
  • Duomo Complex pass valid for three days, per the listing

2. Skip-the-line dome and museum

Rating 4.93 (210 reviews) 150 minutes From $123.37 per adult (based on 2 travelers), checked October 13, 2026 Skip-the-line entry Open on 6 of 60 days checked

This is the version to consider for a first visit when you want the dome, an expert guide and the Opera del Duomo museum in one booking. The listing describes a skip-the-line climb with timed access, a guide who explains the frescoes inside the dome, and a 72-hour Duomo Complex pass. At 150 minutes, it is shorter than the 180-minute climb in card 1 and the 210-minute David combination in card 5. The catch is the calendar: in the window checked, it was open on only 6 of 60 days. Do not plan a day around it until a slot is confirmed.

  • Skip-the-line access to the dome climb
  • Opera del Duomo museum included
  • Headsets so you can hear the guide on the climb

3. Dedicated cathedral entrance, no dome

Rating 4.85 (452 reviews) 100 minutes From $41.12 per adult (based on 2 travelers), checked October 13, 2026 Free cancellation Open on 5 of 60 days checked

This is the tour to choose when the dome does not matter to you. At $41.12 per adult, it is the lowest price on the list. It is built around the building: a licensed guide, a dedicated cathedral entrance and about 45 of the 100 minutes spent inside. It does not include the climb, which is the $83.39 difference from card 1. The meeting point is in Piazza San Giovanni, outside the Panerai watch shop, where the guide carries a FLORENCEPASS sign. The listing says admission depends on respecting church dress rules. Third-party sources report waits of more than two hours at peak times, so an early start is the simplest way to shorten a wait. Only 5 of the 60 days checked were open, so confirm your date before you book.

4. Dome and terraces, or first-entry climb

Rating 4.76 (1168 reviews) 120 to 240 minutes, depending on the option From $96.13 per adult (based on 2 travelers), checked October 13, 2026 Free cancellation Open on 59 of 60 days checked

This listing is a menu of options more than a single tour, so read the option name before you pay. The choices are a dome and terraces visit, a first-entry dome climb that starts at 06:30 at the cathedral’s main entrance, a walking tour that includes the Duomo, and a private version. The $96.13 floor is the lowest price across those options. The data we read do not say which option it belongs to, so this guide does not count it as a dome price. Prices run up to $422.66 per adult. The only start time in the data we read is 06:30, for the first-entry option, and the meeting point changes with each option. It was open on 59 of the 60 days checked, the most of any tour on the list, and it has 1,168 reviews.

  • Dome and terraces, or a 06:30 first-entry climb
  • Duomo Complex pass valid for 72 hours, per the listing

5. David and Accademia with exclusive dome access

Rating 4.81 (730 reviews) 210 minutes From $227.32 per adult (based on 2 travelers), checked October 13, 2026 Skip-the-line entry Open on 17 of 60 days checked

Start here if David is the reason you are going. This combination pairs a timed entry to the Galleria dell’Accademia, where Michelangelo’s David stands, with a reserved dome climb and exclusive access to the North Terrace. It gives three sites in one booking. Its $227.32 floor is the highest of the nine, and it runs to $238.75 per adult for two travelers. That is above the $188.49 to $215.90 range of the private tour in card 8. Plan a half day of 210 minutes. Skip it if the dome is your only goal, because the dome tours in cards 1 and 2 cost $124.51 and $123.37 per adult. The meeting point is at the Fanti monument in Piazza di San Marco, where the guide carries a yellow sign.

6. Small group David and Duomo

Rating 4.7 (2131 reviews) 150 to 210 minutes, depending on the option From $62.83 per adult (based on 2 travelers), checked October 13, 2026 Free cancellation Open on 56 of 60 days checked

At $62.83 per adult, this is the lowest price on the list for a tour that includes David, and it has the most reviews on the list, 2,131. A local English-speaking guide leads the group. The Accademia timed entry and the skip-the-line dome climb apply only if you select them, so read the option name before you pay. The Best of Florence version adds a guided walking tour of the city, and the three-David option includes the Bargello Museum. Prices run from $62.83 to $137.08 per adult across the options. Choose it for David and an overview of the historic center on a budget, with the climb only if you select it.

  • Timed entry to the Accademia Gallery, depending on the option
  • Dome climb available as an option
  • Local English-speaking guide

7. City day, Duomo seen from outside

Rating 4.74 (1336 reviews) 300 minutes From $154.22 per adult (based on 2 travelers), checked October 13, 2026 Skip-the-line entry Open on 47 of 60 days checked

Choose this one for the whole city in a single day, and accept the Duomo from the outside. The five-hour tour covers David at the Accademia, the Uffizi Gallery with skip-the-line tickets, Piazza della Repubblica, and Palazzo Vecchio seen from the outside. The cathedral is viewed from the square only, with no interior and no dome. We include it as a comparison point. At $154.22 to $199.91 per adult, it costs more than the dedicated entrance in card 3 and does not enter the building. Book it for the city plan, not for the Duomo.

  • Timed entry to the Accademia Gallery
  • Skip-the-line tickets for the Uffizi Gallery
  • Duomo seen from outside only

8. Private Duomo Complex tour

Rating 4.66 (87 reviews) 120 to 180 minutes, depending on the visit From $188.49 per adult (based on 2 travelers), checked October 13, 2026 Private tour Open on 51 of 60 days checked

This is the private option, for a visitor who wants a private guide for the Duomo complex. The tour includes tickets for the Baptistery, the museum and the cathedral, and a private guide for three hours. The listing does not mention the dome, so do not assume you will climb it. Confirm the point with the seller before you book. Prices run from $188.49 to $215.90 per adult in the window, below the $227.32 floor of the David and dome combination in card 5. The rating is 4.66 on 87 reviews, a smaller sample than the others. The guide meets at Piazza del Duomo 6, and the listing offers an on-foot pickup from accommodation if it is centrally located.

9. David, cathedral and city, afternoon start

Rating 4.6 (996 reviews) 180 minutes From $124.51 per adult (based on 2 travelers), checked October 13, 2026 Free cancellation Open on 46 of 60 days checked

The detail that matters on this tour is the start time. It covers David at the Accademia with timed entry, a reserved visit to the Duomo Museum, and a three-hour walking introduction to the historic center. The cathedral interior is included on afternoon departures only. Morning departures show the outside alone, so if you want to go inside, choose the afternoon start when you book. It has 996 reviews, and its 4.60 rating is the lowest on the list, a fact to weigh against the others. Choose it for David and a walking overview of the city, not for a dome climb.

  • Timed entry to the Accademia Gallery
  • Reserved visit to the Duomo Museum
  • Cathedral interior on afternoon departures only

Practical tips before you go

Visitors in the square in front of the Florence Cathedral

The official sites were not readable. The cathedral’s English site returned a payment-required error, and the Opera del Duomo site returned a certificate error. Check official ticket prices, hours and access rules on those sites before you travel.

Budget by formula. Prices are per adult for two travelers, so double them for two adults. The lowest dome tour starts at $123.37 (card 2). Card 4’s $96.13 floor is not counted as a dome price, because the data do not say which option it belongs to.

Meeting points. The table does not show where each tour starts. Cards 1 and 2 meet in front of the Lindt chocolate shop. Card 3 meets at Piazza San Giovanni 14r, and card 7 by the column of San Zanobi, next to the Baptistery. Cards 5, 6 and 9 meet at the Fanti monument in Piazza di San Marco, and card 8 at Piazza del Duomo 6. Card 4 meets at the cathedral’s main entrance only for the 06:30 option. Check the point on the booking page before you go.

Bags. Sources disagree. One says bags larger than 35 × 30 × 15 cm, and all backpacks, go to a cloakroom at Piazza Duomo 38/r; another says large bags, backpacks and suitcases are not allowed inside. We could not check either rule on site, so confirm on arrival.

Giotto’s bell tower and the Baptistery. European Traveler gives about 414 steps and about 85 meters for the bell tower, with no elevator, and one guide notes that it has about 50 steps fewer than the dome. Its ticket is not the cathedral’s ticket. Sources disagree on whether it fits a Duomo Complex pass, and card 4’s 72-hour pass lists the Bell Tower among its sites, so confirm before you buy. Four of the nine listings include the Baptistery (cards 1, 4, 5 and 8), and card 5 also names the Gates of Paradise.

Frequently asked questions

Is climbing the Florence Duomo dome worth it?

Yes, if the climb is the reason you are going. The guided dome climb in card 1 starts at $124.51 per adult for two travelers, and the entrance without the climb in card 3 starts at $41.12, a gap of $83.39 per adult. Ratings are close, 4.89 and 4.85, so the gap buys the climb, not a better rating. The listing quotes 463 steps. See the dome tour.

Can you see the Florence Duomo without a guided tour?

Some third-party guides say yes, with a reservation at certain times. We could not confirm this on the official site, which was unreadable when we checked, so we do not present it as a rule. Check the official cathedral site before you go. If you choose a guided tour, you still pick between a dedicated entrance, a dome climb and a combined tour, and the table above lists the price of each.

How much does a Florence Duomo tour cost?

In the window we checked, a dedicated cathedral entrance starts at $41.12 per adult for two travelers, and a small-group David and Duomo tour starts at $62.83. The lowest dome climb with a named tour starts at $123.37 (card 2), and the guided climb in card 1 at $124.51. Prices are per adult and can change with the date and option.

Do you need to book the Florence Duomo dome climb in advance?

Unofficial sources say yes, and the listings use reserved timed entries. We could not confirm a rule on the official site. Book once your dates are fixed. Availability in the window we checked was uneven: the skip-the-line dome climb (card 2) was open on 6 of 60 days, and the dedicated entrance (card 3) on 5 of 60, so do not wait on those two for a last-minute plan.

What should you wear to the Florence Duomo?

Third-party guides say you should cover your shoulders and knees, and that staff can refuse entry to visitors who are not dressed for a church. Sandals and hats are sometimes refused according to the same sources. The listing for the dedicated entrance (card 3) only says that church dress rules apply. This is guide advice, not an official rule we could check, so dress for a church to be safe.

Is the dome climb safe for people with heart problems?

A third-party tour listing advises against the climb for travelers in poor cardiovascular condition. We report that as the listing’s warning and could not verify it against official guidance. The listing quotes 463 steps. If you have a heart condition or are unsure about stairs, talk to your doctor before you book, and consider the dedicated entrance without the dome.
