Nine day trips from Athens run from $34.16 to $330.21 per adult for two travelers, rated 4.73 to 4.97. Prices cover October 27 to December 25, 2026. For the lowest price, choose the Cape Sounion half-day (5 to 6 hours). All nine offer free cancellation 24 hours before departure.

Most travelers come to Athens for the Acropolis and then find they have a day or two to spare. Those days are worth more than they look. You can stand at a temple on a cliff above the sea, walk among rock pillars topped by monasteries, or cross into the Peloponnese before dinner. The difficulty is the choice. A search for day trips from Athens returns dozens of tours that look alike, and the same archaeological site can cost three times more per person as a private tour than as a group.
We narrowed the field to nine tours that the Viator partner API lists with a rating of at least 4.7 out of 5 and at least 100 reviews. We priced each one for two adults, checked availability for October 27 to December 25, 2026, and read the inclusions and exclusions line by line. The title says 2027, but every price and availability figure in this article is for that October 27 to December 25, 2026 window. The highest-rated tour in the set is the Meteora Monasteries Private Full Day Trip, at 4.97 out of 5 from 430 reviews. The best value depends on what you want from the day: the site, the sea, or the most time for the money.
Why Athens Works as a Base for Day Trips
Athens is a good base because the departure points are well connected. Several of the tours leave from places other than a hotel: the Piraeus cruise leaves Marina Zea, the catamaran leaves Alimos Marina, the Delphi group meets near Acropolis metro station, and the Corinth tour can collect you from a cruise terminal. Knowing the meeting point before you book matters as much as knowing the price.
Duration is the second thing to check. A Cape Sounion half-day takes 5 to 6 hours. A Delphi group day takes 11 hours. A Meteora day takes 13.5 hours with a group and 11 to 14 hours in a private car. Those figures are the time the listing gives for the whole day, including the drive, so they are the right numbers to compare against your own schedule.
The start times differ by tour: the Piraeus cruise leaves at 9:00 a.m., the Alimos catamaran at 9:15 a.m. or 3:15 p.m., and the Delphi group meets near Acropolis metro station. The Meteora monasteries also change their timetable on November 1, which falls inside the window covered here. The prices in this article are for two adults in that window, and they can move with demand.
We chose nine tours from a pool of 296 products, using the rating and review floors above and a simple rule: no more than two tours to the same destination. Delphi has two entries, a group and a private tour, and Meteora has two. Our full Delphi article covers the private case in more detail, and cards 2 and 3 link to it rather than repeat it.

If you have one day and want the lowest price, pick the Cape Sounion half-day. If you want the full Delphi site and museum with a licensed guide for the least money among the full-day tours, pick the Delphi group tour. If you want the most complete landscape and a schedule you control, pick the Meteora private tour. If you want the sea, pick the Piraeus cruise or the catamaran, and check the open days first.
The 9 Best Day Trips From Athens

1. Agistri, Moni and Aegina Cruise From Piraeus
Pick this one if the sea matters more to you than the ruins. The boat leaves Marina Zea in Piraeus at 9:00 a.m., so it is a port departure rather than a central pickup, and it does not wait for late guests. Arrive 30 minutes early. The route passes Agistri and Aegina, with a swim stop at Moni or Metopi and free time on both islands. Greek buffet lunch, welcome drinks and unlimited wine, beer and soft drinks are included, which makes the day easy to budget. Ten hours on a boat is long, so this suits travelers who would otherwise spend the afternoon on a beach. Two cautions: the cruise runs on 35 of the 60 days in our window, so check your date first, and towels and personal swim items are not included.
- Greek buffet lunch and unlimited drinks
- Swim and snorkel stop, equipment included
- Departs Piraeus, not central Athens

2. Delphi Group Day Trip With an Expert Guide
This is the cheapest full day at Delphi among the tours here, and it still covers the site and the Delphi Archaeological Museum with a licensed, English-speaking guide all day. The group is small. The Temple of Apollo and the Oracle site are spread across a hillside, so a guide who explains the layout is worth having. Entry is handled by a skip-the-line service, and the vehicle is air-conditioned with Wi-Fi. Meals are not included unless you book the lunch option, and the Delphi site ticket is extra when you book without tickets. Note the meeting point: it is not a hotel pickup. You meet at the corner of Chatzichristou and Makrigianni streets, about 150 meters from Acropolis metro station, under the blue umbrella. For the private case, read our full guide to private Delphi day trips.
- Licensed guide for the whole day
- Guided visit of the site and museum (ticket extra without the ticket option)
- Meeting point near Acropolis metro

3. Delphi Private Day Trip From Athens
Choose this when the schedule has to bend to your group. A private air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your hotel, the airport or the port and returns you the same way, and the group sets the pace at the site. The day is shorter than the group tour, at 8 to 9 hours. The trade-off is the price: about three times the group rate per adult. The driver is not a licensed guide and cannot accompany you inside the sites. If you want the Oracle and the Temple of Apollo explained on site, ask for a guide, which is on request and subject to availability. Site and museum entry is bought on the spot, and gratuities are not included. Our Delphi article explains when the private format is worth the extra cost.
- Hotel, airport or port pickup included
- Driver is not a licensed guide
- Lunch with a Greek traditional food option

4. Meteora Group Day Trip With Central Athens Pickup
This is the lower-cost of the two Meteora days in the set, and one of the longest, at 13.5 hours. You are collected from one of four central Athens pickup points, and the tour includes an English-speaking local expert guide and an audio guide in eight languages. Lunch is optional when you select it. Monastery entry is not included. The official Visit Meteora page lists 5 euros per monastery, paid in cash, so bring euros in cash. The day runs 13.5 hours, which is the trade-off for the lower fare. It is also one of two tours here that run on all 60 days of our window, which makes it a safe choice for a date that is still open. Check the transport and the pickup point in your confirmation before you travel: the listing describes them in different terms, and the pickup names are not confirmed in this article.
- Central Athens pickup, one of four points
- Audio guide in eight languages
- Open on all 60 days of the window

5. Meteora Private Full-Day Trip From Athens
This is the highest-rated tour in the set, and the one to choose if you care about the order of the day. A private executive car or minivan picks you up at your hotel and drops you back there, so the order of the monasteries and the lunch stop are yours to set. The fare is about four times the group price, $330.21 against $81.46 per adult. The gap buys privacy and hotel pickup, not a guide: a guide inside the monasteries is an extra charge. The Meteora fee per monastery, meals and gratuities are not included. The day runs 11 to 14 hours depending on the stops, which is why the range is wide. Book it if you want to choose your own pace. The Meteora timetable changes on November 1, inside this window, so check which monasteries are open on your date.
- Hotel pickup and drop-off included
- Private executive car or minivan
- Guide inside the monasteries at extra cost

6. Cape Sounion Half-Day Small-Group Tour
This is one of the shortest and the least expensive days in the set, and a good choice if you have a single free afternoon. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, the group is capped at 10 guests, and a driver-guide or tour leader travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle. The Temple of Poseidon stands on the cape above the sea. Not included: entry to the temple and gratuities. The Hellenic Heritage page lists opening from 9:30 a.m. until sunset, with last admission 20 minutes before closing, and it lists closed days: January 1, March 25, May 1, Easter Sunday, and December 25 and 26. December 25 falls inside the window, so check the date before you book, and confirm any free-entry day on the site before you rely on it. Sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach are also extra.
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Group capped at 10 guests
- Half-day, 5 to 6 hours

7. Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplio Private Tour
This tour spans two regions. The private car crosses the Corinth Canal, then covers three stops: the Mycenae site with the Treasury of Atreus, the Epidaurus site, and Nafplio, a seaside town that was once the capital of Greece. Lunch with a Greek traditional food option is included, and the private car lets you decide how long to stay at each stop. The driver is not a licensed guide. If you want the Mycenae story told on site, ask for a licensed guide on request, subject to availability. Entry to Mycenae, its museum, Epidaurus and its museum is bought on site, and gratuities are not included. Pick this tour for a full day of ancient sites in one private car. If you want one site and nothing else, Delphi or Sounion is the simpler choice.
- Crosses the Corinth Canal
- Hotel, airport or port pickup included
- Lunch with a Greek traditional food option

8. Corinth: St Paul’s Footsteps Small-Group Tour
This tour is the second most reviewed in the set, with 1,601 combined reviews from Viator and TripAdvisor, and a clear focus: it follows Paul’s stops in Corinth, including the Agora and the Bema. The group is capped at six passengers in a luxury minivan, which is a useful middle ground between a bus and a private car. Pickup is from your hotel, an Airbnb or a cruise port. If you arrive by ship, the driver waits at the terminal exit with a name sign, so give the ship name when you book. Lunch is not included, so plan a meal stop. Entrance fees to Ancient Corinth are extra, and an optional licensed guide is listed at 160 euros on request. The tour runs on all 60 days of the window. Choose it if the New Testament story is your reason for the trip. For a fuller classical site, Mycenae or Delphi suit better.
- Small group of 2 to 6 passengers
- Hotel, Airbnb or cruise port pickup
- Open on all 60 days of the window

9. Athens Riviera Catamaran Half-Day
This is a half-day sail inside Attica, not a full-day trip. It departs from Alimos Marina, south of the city centre, not from Piraeus. Meet the crew at Pier 7 15 minutes before departure, at 9:15 a.m. or 3:15 p.m. The crew guides in six languages, and the fare includes a traditional Greek meal with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, soft drinks and bottled water, wine and beer for adults (not unlimited), snorkeling equipment, and all fees and taxes. The route takes you to clear bays, and the listing says you can swim to a desert island just off the coast. The catch is availability: the sail runs on 23 of the 60 days in our window, so check it first if you have a fixed date. Gratuities are not included.
- Five-hour sail, half-day
- Meal, soft drinks and snorkeling gear included
- Open on 23 of 60 days in the window

Check availability for my datesPractical Tips for Your Day Trips
Most of the costs that surprise travelers on these tours are the ones the listings leave out. Budget for them before you choose.
- Bring cash for Meteora. The official Visit Meteora page lists the monastery entry at 5 euros per monastery, paid in cash. Plan on that amount for each monastery you plan to visit, and check the price on the day.
- Dress for the monasteries. According to a search summary of the Visit Meteora etiquette guidance, visitors cover their shoulders, and women wear long skirts or dresses while men wear long trousers. Wrap skirts are usually available at the entrances. Photography inside is generally not allowed.
- Check the Meteora timetable. Visit Meteora lists closing days for each monastery, and the timetable changes on November 1, during your window. From April 1 to October 31, Great Meteoro is closed on Tuesdays, Varlaam on Fridays, Roussanou on Wednesdays, Holy Trinity on Thursdays, St Stephen on Mondays, and St Nicholas Anapausas on Fridays. From November 1 to March 31, Varlaam is closed on Thursdays and Fridays, Roussanou on Wednesdays, Holy Trinity on Thursdays, St Stephen on Mondays, and St Nicholas Anapausas on Fridays. For Great Meteoro, check the monastery’s own notice for the winter schedule. Check the day of your visit rather than the day you book.
- Expect tips to be your own cost. Gratuities are excluded on six of the nine listings. The other three do not mention them. Budget for tips for your guide or driver.
- Check Delphi hours on the day. Opening hours for the site and the museum differ between sources. Use the official site for the date you go.
- Watch the start times. The Piraeus cruise departs at 9:00 a.m., so arrive 30 minutes early. The Alimos catamaran boards at 9:15 a.m. or 3:15 p.m., with crew at Pier 7 15 minutes before. The Delphi group meets near Acropolis metro station.
The gap between group and private is large, so the choice has a real cost. At Delphi, moving from the group tour ($67.18 to $72.87) to the private tour ($215.66) costs $142.79 to $148.48 more per adult. At Meteora, the private tour costs $248.75 more per adult than the group tour ($330.21 against $81.46). Those differences exclude monastery fees, meals and tips.
For families with children or travelers who tire quickly, the Sounion half-day and the Corinth minivan keep the day shorter. The Delphi site is a hillside site, so plan for walking and bring sensible shoes. For a first visit to Greece, the Delphi group tour and the Meteora group tour give the most of the classic sites for the money. For a couple who wants more time for the views, the private Meteora tour is the most flexible option.
If you want to keep costs down and the schedule loose, pick a group tour that runs on your date, and book early. Several tours show only 23 to 49 open days in the window, so the dates that work for one tour may not work for another.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which day trip from Athens works best with no car?
Five tours include a hotel, airport or port pickup: the Cape Sounion half-day (5 to 6 hours, from $34.16 per adult), the private Delphi tour, the private Mycenae tour, the private Meteora tour and the Corinth minivan (6.25 hours, hotel, Airbnb or cruise port). The Meteora group tour (13.5 hours) collects from one of four central Athens pickup points, which you confirm on the booking. The Delphi group tour meets near Acropolis metro station rather than at your hotel, so it suits travelers who can reach that corner easily.
Is Delphi worth a full day from Athens?
Yes, if you want the site and its museum with a licensed guide. The group tour runs 11 hours for $67.18 to $72.87 per adult and includes the museum visit. The private tour takes 8 to 9 hours for $215.66 per adult, which is shorter but about three times the price. Our full Delphi article covers the private option in more detail.
Can I see Meteora in one day from Athens?
Yes. Both Meteora tours run as full days: 13.5 hours for the group tour and 11 to 14 hours for the private one. The monasteries close on different days of the week, and the timetable changes on November 1, so check which monasteries are open on your date. Monastery entry is extra and paid in cash.
Do I need a visa for Greece as a U.S. citizen?
According to a State Department summary, U.S. citizens can stay up to 90 days in Greece without a visa, with a passport valid three months beyond departure. The official advisory page could not be read for this article, so confirm it on the day you book.
How much cash do I need at Meteora?
Plan on 5 euros per monastery, the amount the Visit Meteora page lists, paid in cash. The Meteora tours exclude monastery entry, so this is the main cost on the day after the tour price. On the private tour, a guide inside the monasteries is an extra charge. Bring enough euros in cash for the number of monasteries you plan to visit, and check the price on the day.
Are tips included in these tours?
Gratuities are excluded on six of the nine tours, and the other three do not mention them. Check each listing before you book and budget for tips for your guide or driver. This article does not state a local tipping norm.
Which of these tours can I cancel for free?
All nine listings carry free cancellation. The listing rule is a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. Check the policy shown in your confirmation, since it applies to the booking you make.
