The Tallinn Christmas Market 2026 runs from Friday 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. It opens at 6 pm on 20 November. According to the organiser, the big tree lights up that opening evening; the tourist office dates the lighting to the first Sunday of Advent, 29 November. The full programme is not yet published.
Checked on against the official sources cited (christmasmarket.ee, visittallinn.ee).
The Tallinn Christmas Market 2026 lasts 48 days, about ten days longer than the 2025 edition. Set on Town Hall Square in the UNESCO-listed Old Town, it opens on 20 November and closes on 6 January 2027. This guide separates what the organisers have announced from what is still to be checked: the tree lighting, the programme, the holiday hours, and what a weekend in Tallinn costs. Dates 2026: what is announced, and what isn’t
The organiser, 5+ Capital, announces an opening on Friday 20 November 2026 at 6 pm and a closing on Wednesday 6 January 2027, in the evening. The tourist office gives the same dates, which makes two concordant official sources. The 2025 edition ran from 21 November to 27 or 28 December, depending on the source, so the 2026 edition is about ten days longer.
Not yet published at the date of checking: the detailed programme (concerts, activities, stage times), which the organiser promises « soon ». The organiser’s website does list the 2026 daily hours: every day from 10 am to 8 pm, hot drinks until 10 pm, and until 11 pm on Friday and Saturday (christmasmarket.ee, checked 15 October 2026).
| Step | Date | Time announced | Status |

Tree lighting: two dates depending on the source
The big tree on Town Hall Square goes up in November, and its lighting marks the opening of the market. On this point, the two official sources don’t say the same thing.
According to the organiser, the lights come on just after the opening speeches, on the evening of Friday 20 November. The tourist office writes that the tree lights up on the first Sunday of Advent, which falls on 29 November 2026, and links that date to the opening of the market. That wording is general and doesn’t square with the organiser’s date. This guide doesn’t settle the question.
For planning, there are two sensible options. If you arrive on 20 November, the 6 pm opening is the safest date, and the lighting that evening is only announced by the organiser. If the lighting is the reason for the trip, leave some margin around 29 November. Either way, a message to the organiser before you travel settles the doubt.
Tallinn claims a public tree tradition going back to 1441, based on a story tied to the Brotherhood of Blackheads. An official Estonian site says Tallinn had « the first Christmas tree exhibited in Europe », without citing an archive. This guide doesn’t repeat that claim as fact: 1441 is an assertion, not proof.
The Old Town in winter, the market’s backdrop

Tallinn Old Town
The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, forms the backdrop to the market: city walls, towers and cobbled lanes. Town Hall Square is small: two hours is enough for the market and a bite to eat. In December the daylight is short and the cobbles can be slippery. None of the guides we checked covers the ice specifically, which is why we suggest, in general, shoes with grippy soles.
Highlights
- The city walls and the Kiek in de Kök tower, in the Old Town
- The Town Hall window, where the mayor reads the Christmas Peace on 24 December
- The big tree, on the same square as the stalls
This photo session has no link to the market. Its price, checked on 15 October 2026, is €42 to €50 per adult (based on 2 adults). Availability was checked for 31 of the market’s 48 days, between 20 November 2026 and 6 January 2027.
At the market: stalls, street food and budget
The stalls sell mostly Estonian crafts: mittens, fur hats, amber jewellery, ceramics and candles. There are sweets as well, such as gingerbread and candy, and hot food: blood sausage, soup and mulled wine.
Time Out ranks it among Europe’s « most traditional » markets (2025 list, not re-read when this was written). No visitor figures have been published for the 2025 edition, so we don’t give a visitor count.

Crafts: mittens, hats and amber
Crafts are at the heart of the market: mittens, fur hats, amber jewellery and candles. No craft price had been recorded at the date of checking. The square is small, so it’s easy to compare two stalls before you buy.
Highlights
- Knitted hats and mittens, for the very cold days
- Amber jewellery, worth comparing between several stalls
- Gingerbread and sweets, for children and gifts
Christmas Peace and closed days, 24 December to 1 January
At noon on 24 December, the mayor reads the Christmas Peace (jõulurahu) from a window of the Town Hall. The text, adapted from a 17th-century proclamation, calls for calm over the holidays. The ceremony is broadcast by ERR, and in 2025 it took place on Wednesday 24 December at noon. For 2026, the time and place are not confirmed: check on the day.
The city museums are closed on 24, 25 and 26 December, and on 1 January. Shops and restaurants don’t follow a single rule: one blog says some close and others stay open, and no reliable source gives hours for those days. Call the places you plan to visit.
Winter 2026: planning for the cold
Winter 2026 was one of the coldest in 25 years in Tallinn, according to an ERR headline of 3 February 2026. The January 2026 average reached −7.8°C, against a normal of −3.1°C (same article, checked 15 October 2026). These figures concern January, not December: no December 2026 monthly average is available yet.
Pack warm layers, a hat and shoes with grippy soles. Days are short in December. Our tip: plan your market visit for late afternoon, once it’s dark.
A typical weekend: Friday evening to Sunday
The simplest weekend builds around the Friday evening opening. Here is one possible plan, to adjust once the detailed programme is published.
- Friday 20 November, arrival. Fly in, then take the tram or bus to the centre. The market opens at 6 pm, with the tree lighting the organiser announces for that evening.
- Saturday, a full day. The Old Town in the morning, then the market in the afternoon and evening. Dinner in an Old Town tavern; hot drinks are served until 11 pm on Friday and Saturday (organiser, 2026).
- Sunday, departure. A museum or a public sauna before the journey home. A public sauna is listed at €24 per person, undated (littleweekends.fr).
What a weekend costs, item by item
No total has been worked out: we have no dated flight fare and no dated hotel price for December 2026. Here is what each item can tell you, with its date.
- Flight from Paris to Tallinn: no dated fare found. A « from €37 » one-way fare seen online is undated: don’t take it as a 2026 price.
- Accommodation: €79 to €134 « from », for four properties (littleweekends.fr, undated, night not specified). These are not 2026 rates.
- Market food: €14 to €18 for a hot meal, plus a €2 deposit for the plate (ERR, 2025, search result, article not opened).
- Airport to the centre: €2 by tram or bus (littleweekends.fr, undated).
- Market entry: free entry not confirmed by the organiser.
The city museums are closed on 24, 25 and 26 December and on 1 January (undated page); a stay from 20 to 22 November is not affected by those closures. To choose between early and late in the season, weigh your dates: we have no December 2026 price or temperature yet. For how Tallinn compares with other markets, see our guide to Christmas markets in Europe 2026.
Flights and transfers
A direct flight from Paris CDG is reported (airBaltic, in partnership with Air France), but its frequency is not confirmed for winter 2026: the airline’s page returned an error when we checked. Check the airline before you book. No dated fare for December 2026 was found.
| Item | What we found | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Paris CDG | Direct flight reported (airBaltic, in partnership with Air France), about 2 h 50 | Reported, frequency not confirmed |
| Airport to the centre | Tram T2 or T4, or bus 2: about 20 minutes, €2 | Fare undated |
| Entry requirements | Check the official government travel advice for your country | To check before you travel |

For a combined trip, a ferry links Helsinki and Tallinn in about two hours; its winter 2026 timetable has not been checked.
Who runs the market, and what could change
Since 2023, the market has been run by 5+ Capital under contract with the City. The three-year contract signed in summer 2023, worth €216,369 in total, ended with the 2025 season (ERR, 17 October 2025). An ERR headline announces that the operator will be retained for 2026.
What happens after 2026 is not settled (ERR). At the end of 2025, the new city council raised the idea of the City taking the market back, with no public decision at the date of checking. For a December 2026 trip, that’s a reason to check the programme before you travel.
Depending on your travel style
Families. The market can be walked round in two hours. Father Christmas receives visitors from 12 noon to 6 pm every day from 29 November 2026: plan that stop. Night falls early in December, so warm breaks matter more than the programme.
Couples. The weekend suits two days: the Old Town in the morning, the market in the evening, and dinner and a sauna as options.
On a tight budget. In 2025, a hot meal cost €14 to €18, plus a €2 deposit (ERR, search result, article not opened). A meal in an ordinary restaurant is listed at €18 to €30 per person (one 2026 blog, a single source). The airport trip costs €2 by tram or bus (littleweekends.fr, undated). These figures are not 2026 prices.
Reduced mobility. The Old Town’s cobbles can be slippery in December. We found no source on the market’s accessibility: ask the tourist office before you go.
What other guides don’t tell you
- Most guides we read give 2025 dates, or none. The organiser announces closing on 6 January 2027, in the evening. christmasmarket.ee (checked 15 October 2026).
- The tree lighting has two dates. The opening evening according to the organiser, the first Sunday of Advent according to the tourist office. No guide we read flags this disagreement. visittallinn.ee (checked 15 October 2026).
- The Christmas Peace is read at noon on 24 December. It is missing from the guides we read. ERR documents it for 2025; the 2026 time is not confirmed. ERR (checked 15 October 2026).
