For Christmas 2026, Rome’s city council has not published any dates for the Piazza Navona market: the 2025-26 season ran from 1 December 2025 to 6 January 2026. The published hours for 2025-26 are 9 am to 1 am, and entry is free according to guides, not confirmed by the city.
Checked on against the official sources cited (Roma Capitale, Holy See Press Office).
Guides describe the Piazza Navona Christmas market as the most visited in Rome, but its 2026 dates have not been made official. A visit to the square takes one to two hours: the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Baroque façades and the stalls can all be seen on the same route. This guide separates what is sourced from what isn’t, then suggests a half-day walk between the square, the nativity scenes and the city’s trees.
1. Dates and hours: what the city has published
The only official source on the Piazza Navona market covers the 2025-26 season. The Roma Capitale release of 6 December 2025 gives the period, the hours and the arrival of La Befana. For 2026-27, no announcement has appeared on the city’s website or the tourist office’s as of 18 October 2026. The dates in circulation, such as « 1 to 31 December 2026 », come from a third-party site that presents them as expected « based on previous years ».
The table below separates the two seasons. Read the right-hand column as information to check, not as a calendar.
| Item | 2025-26 season (published) | 2026-27 season (as of 18 October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Market dates | From 1 December 2025 to 6 January 2026 | Not announced by the city; a third-party estimate gives 1 to 31 December 2026 |
| Opening hours | 9 am to 1 am, until 2 am on feast days and their eves | Not published |
| Arrival of La Befana | 6 January 2026 at 2 pm, in the square | Not announced |
| Entry | Free, no booking (guides, not confirmed by the city) | Not announced |
| 100 Presepi exhibition (St Peter’s Square) | From 8 December 2025 to 8 January 2026 | Not announced |
Source: Roma Capitale, release of 6 December 2025; Holy See Press Office, release of 4 December 2025. Checked on 18 October 2026.
Two discrepancies deserve attention. First, the end date of the nativity exhibition varies by source: the Holy See release sets it at 8 January 2026, while other sites give 6 January. Second, the 9 am to 1 am hours are the ones the city published for 2025-26, while one guide shows 11 am to 7 pm. That second figure matches no official source and should not be used to plan an evening out.
The one thing we know about next season is that nothing has been announced. If you’re planning a trip over the holidays, leave some margin and check the Roma Capitale website a few days before you travel. This article will be updated as soon as an official date appears.
3. Nativity scenes: the biggest is at the Vatican, the others are low-key
Rome has two kinds of nativity scene, and it helps to keep them apart. Seasonal ones go up for the festive period: the 100 Presepi exhibition, the market figurines, and the nativity in Piazza di Spagna, set up each 8 December. Permanent ones stay all year, such as the one in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose date of creation varies between sources (1289 or 1291).

The 100 Presepi, colonnade of St Peter’s Square
The exhibition fills the left colonnade of St Peter’s Square, under Bernini’s colonnade. The Holy See Press Office release sets the 2025-26 period as 8 December to 8 January and states that entry is free. It is the most official nativity of the season. Hours given by guides are not in the release, so check them before you go.
Highlights
- An open-air exhibition under the colonnade, no ticket needed
- An eighth edition, according to the Holy See release
- A natural stop if you’re seeing the basilica for the first time
Guides also list neighbourhood nativities and a presepe museum. That data dates from 2014 and has not been reconfirmed: it is not reported here, apart from the permanent nativity at Santa Maria Maggiore, whose dating partly comes from a 2014 source. The table below keeps only the sites with an identified source.
| Place | Type | Period | Source status |
|---|---|---|---|
| St Peter’s Square, left colonnade | Seasonal (100 Presepi) | From 8 December 2025 to 8 January 2026 | Official (Holy See) |
| Piazza Navona | Seasonal (artisan presepi, live nativity) | During the market | Guide (Romeing), no exact address |
| Piazza di Spagna, foot of the Trinità dei Monti steps | Seasonal (nativity and tree) | Set up each 8 December | Guide (Partir à Rome), to be checked |
| Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore | Permanent (Arnolfo di Cambio nativity, in marble) | All year | Dated 1289 or 1291 depending on the source, to be checked |

4. Trees and lights: Piazza del Popolo, not Piazza Venezia
Some sites place the main tree in Piazza Venezia. That is not the case for the 2025-26 season: the square is a Metro C construction site, and the official tree is in Piazza del Popolo, according to Turismo Roma. The tree is over 20 metres tall and has 100,000 LEDs. Via del Corso, which starts at Piazza del Popolo, is lit along 1.8 km with 500,000 micro-LEDs, according to Acea.

Piazza del Popolo and Via del Corso
Turismo Roma also describes the façade of the Galleria Alberto Sordi, decorated with light installations, and new trees across the neighbourhoods, looked after by the city’s environment department. According to the press, the Piazza del Popolo tree was lit around 8 December 2025. The height cited by the press (21 metres) has not been confirmed by the city.
Highlights
- The official tree, Piazza del Popolo
- The lit route along Via del Corso
- The illuminated façades of the Galleria Alberto Sordi

5. Budget: what’s free and what isn’t
The Vatican exhibition is free according to the Holy See release, and entry to the square is free according to guides. The budget therefore goes mostly on transport, shopping and guided tours. The table only lists amounts we recorded: unsourced items are not estimated.
| Item | Amount | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Piazza Navona entry | Free | Guides, not confirmed by the city |
| 100 Presepi exhibition | Free | Holy See, 4 December 2025 |
| Leonardo Express, Fiumicino to Termini, one way | €14 | Trenitalia, to be rechecked at purchase |
| Private walking tour, two adults | €490 (€245 per adult) | Viator, checked 18 October 2026 for 27 December 2026 |
| Fairground ride, mulled wine, chestnuts, stalls | Not recorded | No source gives a price |
Source: Trenitalia, Leonardo Express; Holy See Press Office; Viator, checked 18 October 2026. Prices to be rechecked at the time of booking.
For a tight budget, the half-day can be done without paying for entry: the square, the market seen from the stalls and the Vatican exhibition. The only significant costs we recorded are the trip from the airport and an optional guided tour. For shopping, budget little: most stalls sell mass-market products.
6. Depending on your travel style
- With kids. The market is a good first stop with children: sweets, chestnuts, figurines and a carousel with wooden horses (reported for 2025, price not recorded). One guide advises arriving early on a weekday, before the school groups.
- Couples. The square is best seen at nightfall, when the fountain and the façades are lit. The 2026 lighting times have not been published, so allow some slack rather than fixing a precise time.
- On a budget. The square, the market without buying anything (free entry according to guides) and the Vatican exhibition need no ticket. The only fixed cost we recorded is the train from Fiumicino, €14 one way.
- First time in Rome. Pair the square with the Pantheon. Romeing notes that the square is easy to reach on foot from the Pantheon, so you don’t need another means of transport.
- Reduced mobility. No official accessibility data for the square or the market was found: check before you go.
Four mistakes to avoid
- Trusting a 2026 date from a third-party site without finding it on an official source.
- Looking for the main tree in Piazza Venezia, where the square is under works for Metro C.
- Buying souvenirs at the market for their craftsmanship: most products are mass-produced.
- Turning up on 6 January without planning for the crowds, since the arrival of La Befana draws the biggest.
What other guides don’t tell you
Five points checked against official sources, missing from or wrong in the guides we consulted.
- No 2026-27 dates have been published. Several guides list « 1 to 31 December 2026 ». The city has announced nothing, and the estimate comes from a third-party site that labels it « expected, based on previous years ». Source: Roma Capitale (accessed 18 October 2026).
- The published 2025-26 hours are 9 am to 1 am. One guide gives 11 am to 7 pm, which contradicts the city’s release (9 am to 1 am, 2 am on feast days). Source: Roma Capitale (accessed 18 October 2026).
- There is no official tree in Piazza Venezia. The square is a Metro C construction site, and the official tree is in Piazza del Popolo. Source: Turismo Roma (accessed 18 October 2026).
- The Vatican nativity exhibition ends on 8 January, not 6 January. The Holy See release sets the end at 8 January 2026, while other sites give 6 January. Source: Holy See Press Office (accessed 18 October 2026).
- The market and the decorations don’t open on the same day. The market starts on 1 December, according to the city. Turismo Roma puts the start of « Christmas in Rome » at 8 December in the body of its page. Source: Turismo Roma (accessed 18 October 2026).
