Winter Glow 2026-2027 runs in Bruges from 20 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, with no walking light trail. Markets and the ice rink close on 3 January 2027, and the rink costs €9 for a single entry. The Winter Giant parade is on 30 and 31 January 2027. For a quieter visit, try a January weekday (an assumption: no visitor counts are published).
Checked on against the official sources cited (Visit Bruges, checked on 18 October 2026).
Winter Glow is no longer the walking light trail that many guides still describe. The walk along the canals ended after the 2025-2026 edition. The 2026-2027 season now works in blocks: markets and the ice rink from 20 November to 3 January, a light show on the cathedral announced by the press, then the Winter Giant parade on 30 and 31 January.
This article gathers the official dates, the prices checked on 18 October 2026, what has changed compared with older guides, and the moments when the centre still feels calm. You will find a calendar, detailed opening hours and visiting windows ranked by level of evidence. When a detail comes only from the press, we flag it as such.
1. The 2026-2027 season calendar
Winter Glow is the name Bruges gives to its winter season. It is not a single event: each strand has its own dates, and the first thing to know is that the official window is longer than the markets’ window. The season runs from Friday 20 November 2026 to Sunday 31 January 2027. The Christmas markets, the ice rink and the winter bar close on Sunday 3 January 2027.
In between, the season changes character. Late November and December bring the markets, the rink, the winter bar and the first Winter Giant workshops. January keeps the neighbourhood animations and the Winter Giant parade. The table below lists the dates as the official page publishes them. Lines that come only from the press are flagged in the last column.
| Strand | Start | End | Source status |

2. Winter evenings: cathedral, canals and night walk

Evenings without a light trail
The walking light trail, which guided visitors along the canals, disappeared after the 2025-2026 edition. The city stopped it after seven years, citing the burden on residents and overcrowding in the quieter streets (VRT NWS, 10 September 2025). According to the press in March 2026 (VRT NWS, 17 March 2026), it is replaced by a light and music show on St Saviour’s Cathedral, announced from 20 November 2026. The official page checked on 18 October 2026 does not mention it: its hours and end date are covered in section 5.
The canals remain the backdrop. Without a marked route, the simplest way to see them is to walk from the Markt towards the Minnewater after dark, crossing the bridges and lanes of the centre. For a guided version, the night walk below suits travellers who want to know the stories behind the façades.
Highlights
- A small-group night walk on foot, lasting 120 to 135 minutes according to the Viator listing checked on 18 October 2026.
- No visitor count is published: the centre probably empties in the evening, once day visitors leave after the afternoon peak.
- A light show on the cathedral, announced by the press from 20 November 2026, with no published times.
3. Christmas markets: free entry, open until New Year’s Eve

Two spaces, one season
The markets occupy the historic heart: the Markt and the main square. The press also mentions a market on Simon Stevinplein, with details still to be confirmed on the official page. Access is free, and you can walk between the chalets without a ticket, at your own pace.
The official hours are simple to remember: Sunday to Thursday, 11:00 am to 10:00 pm; Friday and Saturday, 11:00 am to 11:30 pm. On New Year’s Eve, the markets stay open until 3:00 am, a detail that older guides sometimes get wrong.
Highlights
- Longer hours on Friday and Saturday, until 11:30 pm.
- Open until 3:00 am on New Year’s Eve, 31 December.
- The MAKERSmarkt, from 18 to 20 December 2026, at the City Halls (Markt 7).
| Day | Hours | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday to Thursday | 11:00 am to 10:00 pm | Free |
| Friday and Saturday | 11:00 am to 11:30 pm | Free |
| New Year’s Eve, 31 December | Open until 3:00 am | Free |
| MAKERSmarkt, Friday 18 December | 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm | Free |
| MAKERSmarkt, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December | 11:00 am to 6:00 pm | Free |

4. The ice rink and winter bar in Koning Albert I Park
Ice rink: €9 for individuals, less for groups and schools
The ice rink and the IJsgloed winter bar occupy Koning Albert I Park, near the Minnewater, the romantic lake at the southern edge of the old town. They open on the same day as the markets, from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Official hours are 10:00 am to 10:00 pm every day, with two exceptions: on 24 and 31 December the ice closes at 5:30 pm; on 25 December and 1 January it opens at 12:00 pm and closes at 10:00 pm.
The reference rate is €9 for a single entry. Groups of ten people or more pay €8 each, schools pay €5, and children under 3 enter free. Payment is by Bancontact, Payconiq or cash. The winter bar, however, shows no price on the official page. If you are choosing between cities for a winter escape, our article on winter in Brussels, with its Grand-Place ice rink, covers the Brussels version of this trip.
Highlights
- An ice rink open every day from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm, except on the year-end holidays.
- A group rate of €8 per person from ten people.
- The IJsgloed winter bar, on the same site and during the same period.
| Case | Hours | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Individual entry, every day | 10:00 am to 10:00 pm | €9 |
| Group of ten people or more | 10:00 am to 10:00 pm | €8 per person |
| Schools | 10:00 am to 10:00 pm | €5 |
| Children under 3 | 10:00 am to 10:00 pm | Free |
| 24 and 31 December | 10:00 am to 5:30 pm | Prices as above |
| 25 December and 1 January | 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm | Prices as above |
Source: Visit Bruges, ice rink, checked on 18 October 2026. The IJsgloed winter bar is presented on the winter bar page with no published price.
5. The cathedral show: what we know and what we don’t
The season’s novelty is a light and music show projected onto St Saviour’s Cathedral (Sint-Salvatorskathedraal). The press announces it from 20 November 2026 (VRT NWS, 17 March 2026) and cites 14 February 2027 as its end date, though the official page does not confirm this. The same announcement says the extension aims to spread visitors across December and to give hoteliers a reason to attract guests in January and February.
Three things are not published yet. First, the end date: the official Winter Glow page, checked on 18 October 2026, gives 31 January as the end of the season and does not mention the show, which leaves a two-week gap with the press. Second, the times: neither the number of performances nor their length appears in an official source. Third, the price and the organiser. One press article mentions a concession granted by the cathedral, but the council documents describing it were not readable when we checked.
In practice, treat the cathedral as an end-of-day option, not the centrepiece of your evening. Check times on site or on the Visit Bruges website before building your route around the show. In this article, « from 20 November 2026 » is the only date treated as confirmed; the end date remains open.
6. The Winter Giant and Uitwijken Winter: the January season
January is the part of the season that few guides cover yet. The Winter Giant parade, which the press presents as a new giant-puppet show for this season (VRT NWS, 17 March 2026), takes place on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 January 2027. The route and timings of the parade were not published at the date of consultation.
The workshops that lead up to the parade take place at the House of Time, Komvest 45, in blocks of dates. From Tuesday to Friday they run from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm; on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The last block, 19 to 24 January 2027, is the closest to the parade and the easiest to combine with an end-of-season visit.
From 26 to 31 January, Uitwijken Winter takes over several neighbourhoods with animations. The official page publishes neither a detailed programme nor hours, so follow this strand on the Visit Bruges website as announcements come in.
| Block of dates | Tuesday to Friday | Saturday and Sunday |
|---|---|---|
| 17 to 22 November 2026 | 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm | 10:00 am to 4:00 pm |
| 1 to 6 December 2026 | 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm | 10:00 am to 4:00 pm |
| 8 to 13 December 2026 | 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm | 10:00 am to 4:00 pm |
| 15 to 20 December 2026 | 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm | 10:00 am to 4:00 pm |
| 19 to 24 January 2027 | 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm | 10:00 am to 4:00 pm |

7. Avoiding the crowds: visiting windows and level of evidence
No official source publishes hourly counts or daily attendance by weekday. What we can say falls into three levels: what is official, what the city, the press and guides broadly agree on, and what is a hypothesis. The table below separates the three.
The city itself names December as the busiest period, and the cathedral show’s extension explicitly aims to move part of that crowd into January and February (VRT NWS, 17 March 2026). A VRT NWS report dated 8 January 2023 describes a very busy 2022 season, weekdays included. A weekday therefore stays quieter than a Saturday, without being empty.
Pedestrian and calm-traffic streets also matter. As part of the festive shopping offer, Steenstraat is pedestrianised and open every day from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and Katelijnestraat, a calm-traffic street, follows the same hours. Geldmuntstraat and Zuidzandstraat open at weekends only. The official page notes that it still contains elements from the previous edition, so check the hours before your visit.
| Window | What we know | Level of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| December, Saturday and Sunday | Busiest days and period, according to the city, the press and guides | High |
| December, weekdays, late afternoon | Less dense than at weekends, but not empty (2023 report) | Medium |
| December, before 11:00 am | Markets open at 11:00 am; no measurement of morning crowds | Official hours, crowds not measured |
| 3 to 31 January 2027, weekdays | Markets and rink closed; the show, the Winter Giant and Uitwijken Winter remain. One guide reports a drop after Christmas, with no figures | Low to medium, hypothesis |
| 26 to 31 January 2027, weekend | Winter Giant parade on 30 and 31 January: probable peak | Official dates, crowds not measured |
Source: Visit Bruges, Winter Glow for dates and hours; VRT NWS, 17 March 2026 for context. The level of evidence is an editorial judgement, not a count. Checked on 18 October 2026.
The working hypothesis, absent any measurement: for a calm visit, come on a January weekday in the early afternoon, then keep the evening for a walk through the centre after dark, or for the night walk in section 2. This advice follows from the official dates and hours. No measurement confirms it. January attendance also depends on Belgian school holidays, whose dates we have not verified, and on the New Year weekend. The city is also adding animations in January to attract visitors.
What other guides don’t tell you
Several guides and automated answers still describe the 2025-2026 season. The points below are the ones you won’t find in those texts, or find wrong there, with the source that settles each one.
- The walking light trail no longer exists. Its last edition ran from 21 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, after seven years. VRT NWS, 10 September 2025 (checked on 18 October 2026).
- The ice rink costs €9, not €7 or €8. The published individual rate is €9. The €8 rate applies to groups of ten people or more, and schools pay €5. Visit Bruges, ice rink (checked on 18 October 2026).
- The season does not end on 3 or 4 January. Markets and the rink close on 3 January 2027, but the Winter Glow season runs to 31 January. The date of 14 February 2027 given for the cathedral show comes only from the press and is not confirmed by the official page. Visit Bruges, Winter Glow (checked on 18 October 2026).
- The cathedral show is new. It is absent from older guides and from the official page, while the press announces it from 20 November 2026, with an extension to spread crowds across December. VRT NWS, 17 March 2026 (checked on 18 October 2026).
- The Winter Giant parade has a date, but no time. The official page announces 30 and 31 January 2027; the route and the hours are not announced. Visit Bruges, Winter Giant (checked on 18 October 2026).
Practical info: budget, access and booking
Your budget stays modest if you keep to the centre: the markets and the MAKERSmarkt are free, and the ice rink costs €9 for a single entry. The most variable expense is the hotel, since the tourist tax is charged per person per night.
For access, Bruges is reached by train from Brussels. If you are coming from London, the usual route is the Eurostar to Brussels, then a train on to Bruges. A third-party source, NS International, gives about 2 h 45 from Paris, with a change in Brussels. We have not checked that time against a railway company timetable, so look it up before booking.
For step-free access, no official page describes the markets, the rink or the show. Third-party sources mention a sloping approach to the cathedral and cobbled streets in the centre: check with Visit Bruges before booking.

What are the dates of Winter Glow in Bruges for 2026-2027?
The official season runs from Friday 20 November 2026 to Sunday 31 January 2027, according to the Visit Bruges page checked on 18 October 2026. The Christmas markets, the ice rink and the winter bar close earlier, on Sunday 3 January 2027. The Winter Giant parade takes place on 30 and 31 January, and the cathedral show is announced from 20 November 2026, with no end date published.
Does the Bruges walking light trail still exist?
No. The walking light trail was stopped after its last edition, from 21 November 2025 to 4 January 2026. The city cited the burden on residents and overcrowding in quieter streets, according to regional press from September 2025. Guides that still promise illuminations in the late afternoon are a season behind. The light show is now the cathedral show, announced by the press from 20 November 2026.
How much does the Bruges ice rink cost in 2026?
A single entry costs €9 per person. Groups of ten or more pay €8 per person, schools pay €5, and children under 3 enter free. Payment is by Bancontact, Payconiq or cash. These rates come from the official ice rink page, checked on 18 October 2026, not from guides quoting €7 to €8.
What are the opening hours of the Bruges Christmas markets?
The markets open every day at 11:00 am. They close at 10:00 pm from Sunday to Thursday, and at 11:30 pm on Friday and Saturday. On New Year’s Eve, 31 December, they stay open until 3:00 am. Entry is free, and the season runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 (Visit Bruges, checked on 18 October 2026).
Which day should I visit Bruges to avoid the crowds?
No official source publishes visitor counts. The city and the press point to the December weekend as the busiest period. A weekday is less crowded than a Saturday, without being empty. The working hypothesis, absent any measurement, is late January outside the weekend, after the markets close, avoiding the Winter Giant parade on 30 and 31 January if you want calm. Belgian school holidays, whose dates we have not checked, may change this.
What is the cathedral programme in Bruges this winter?
The press announces a light and music show on St Saviour’s Cathedral from 20 November 2026 (VRT NWS, 17 March 2026). It gives 14 February 2027 as the end date, which the official page does not confirm: the end is not published at the date of checking. The official Winter Glow page gives 31 January as the end of the season and does not mention this show. Times, the number of performances and the price were not published at the date of checking.
How long does the train from Paris to Bruges take?
A third-party source, NS International, gives about 2 h 45 from Paris, with a change in Brussels. This time has not been confirmed on a railway company timetable. Before booking, check the official timetables of SNCB and of the operator you choose, since works and connections can change journey times.
Is there a tourist tax in Bruges?
Yes. According to ETOA (review of 14 May 2025) and the press, the tax is €3.75 per person per night, excluding VAT, with an exemption for under-18s. One Dutch-language source says €4. The city plans to raise it to €5 from 2028, a proposal the city council still has to discuss. Check the amount with the city before booking.
