On Sunday 13 December 2026, Lucia Day is celebrated in Stockholm, in churches and at the Nordiska museet. Engelbrektskyrkan has two sessions that day, at 4 pm and 6 pm. Storkyrkan has no confirmed session on that date, and its tickets are paid. Skansen has published neither dates nor times for 2026.
Checked on against the official pages of Visit Stockholm, the Church of Sweden and Skansen.
Lucia Day doesn’t happen in one place. On 13 December it plays out in a church in Östermalm, a museum on Djurgården, and school classrooms, where the festival is kept up by families and small groups. This guide sets out what is announced for 2026, what still needs confirming, and what you will have to pay. For the other events of the season, read our Christmas in Stockholm 2026 guide, whose experiences we don’t repeat here.
1. The procession: who walks, where and when
The procession follows a recognisable formula: a girl in a long white gown with a red sash, a crown of candles on her head, followed by attendants (tärnor) and boys in pointed hats decorated with stars (stjärngossar). What changes from one city to another is the venue, the time and the price of entry.

Storkyrkan, the cathedral in Gamla stan
Storkyrkan is the venue most often cited for the procession. The Visit Stockholm listing « Meet Lucia at The Cathedral 2026 » shows sessions on 6 and 8 December 2026: the 6th at 3 pm and 5 pm, the 8th at 6 pm. No session is listed for the 13th. The Church’s concert page, updated on 23 September 2026, mentions « Lucia i Storkyrkan » without giving a day. Check the date on the Storkyrkan ticket page before you build your day around it.
Highlights
- Tickets online at musikstorkyrkanstjacob.com or through Nortic, and on the door from 9:30 am to 5 pm. The box office closes during concerts.
- Purchases are non-refundable. The Church warns against unauthorised resale, Viagogo included.
- Large bags, backpacks, suitcases and strollers are not allowed in.
If you don’t get a seat at Storkyrkan, or you want the afternoon free, the Viator Swedish Christmas tour is an option: two hours in a small group, with seven samples of festive food and drink, according to the product page checked on 18 October 2026. It is not a Lucia Day tour: the page is about Swedish Christmas, its traditions and rituals. The Viator API, queried the same day, returns slots at 10 am and 2 pm on 13 December 2026, with seats available.
On the morning of 13 December, tradition calls for processions. The Visit Stockholm guide published on 3 August 2026, checked on 18 October 2026, says: “Early in the morning on December 13th, or later in the day, choirs dressed in white process into churches”. Guides give 7 am to 8 am for the morning ceremonies, and one advises arriving 60 to 90 minutes early (Stockholm à la carte, a 2024 guide, to be read with caution for 2026). No 2026 morning schedule is published by the churches we consulted.
2. The 2026 programme, venue by venue
Two venues announce sessions on 13 December 2026: one on the Visit Stockholm listing for Engelbrekt church, the other found through a search for the Nordiska museet. The first is at Engelbrektskyrkan, Östermalmsgatan 20, where the Adolf Fredrik Girls’ Choir sings at 4 pm and 6 pm. The price is not shown on the listing. At the Nordiska museet, on Djurgården, a concert by Dalarnas Lussibrud is announced at 5 pm and 7:30 pm. Ticketing and prices were not checked: see the Visit Stockholm listing. The table below lists the sessions of 13 December, so you can see what is confirmed and what is not.
| Venue | Date | Announced time | Status as of 18 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engelbrektskyrkan, Östermalm | Sunday 13 December 2026 | 4 pm to 5 pm and 6 pm to 7 pm | Announced by Visit Stockholm; price not listed |
| Nordiska museet, Djurgården | 13 December 2026 | 5 pm and 7:30 pm | Concert with Dalarnas Lussibrud, announced by Visit Stockholm (found through search) |
| Storkyrkan, Gamla stan | 6 December (3 pm and 5 pm); 8 December (6 pm) | 1 hour per session | 13 December not confirmed; paid tickets |
| Lucia on Water, Forsgrénska badet | 9 and 12 December 2026 | 6:30 pm (and 7:30 pm on the 9th) | No session on 13 December |
| Skansen, Seglora and Temperance Hall | 2026 | Not published | Programme announced, no dates |
| Skansen, 2025 benchmark | Saturday 13 December 2025 | 11 am to 4 pm | Past: rhythm benchmark only |
Source: Visit Stockholm, Lucia in Engelbrekt Church 2026 listing, Meet Lucia at The Cathedral 2026 listing, Skansen, Lucia at Skansen 2026; the Nordiska museet and Lucia on Water listings were read through search results, and the 2025 benchmark comes from a Skansen press release. Checked on 18 October 2026.
Read this table as a status report, not a final programme. Churches publish their schedules on different dates, and sessions can be added or dropped at any time. Check the listing the day before.
3. Skansen: Lucia Day in the open air
Skansen is the home of the modern festival. According to the national inventory, Lucia was launched there in 1893. The Nordiska museet credits the initiative to Artur Hazelius, the founder of the open-air museum, and dates it to the 1890s. In 2026, Skansen announces a Lucia concert in Seglora church, a wooden church moved to the site, and « A 1920s Lucia Celebration » at the Temperance Hall.

Skansen, Djurgården
In 2025, Skansen’s press release announced concerts in Seglora on Saturday 13 December at 11 am, 12 pm, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm, plus an outdoor concert at 4 pm at Skogaholm, included in the general admission ticket. It is a rhythm benchmark, not the 2026 programme. The « Christmas at Skansen » page only says the museum will publish information for 2026, with no dates.
Highlights
- Tickets are sold at the main entrance or on skansenbiljett.se.
- Children under 15 enter free, according to the Stockholm Spirit guide.
- The setting comes closest to the rural tradition the museum wants to show: wooden churches, old houses, period costumes.
Skansen has not published the 2026 price of general admission. A third-party guide, Stockholm Spirit, gives around 250 kronor for an adult. That is an estimate, not confirmed by the museum, and should be checked before you travel.
4. Where Lucia comes from, and why 13 December
13 December is the legendary martyrdom date of Saint Lucia of Syracuse, in 304, according to the Nordiska museet. The name comes from the Latin lux, meaning light. The link between the Catholic saint and the Swedish festival remains, according to the national inventory, very indirect. Levande kulturarv describes a relatively modern festival, with traces in the 18th century and a tradition that spread through the 19th. Some guides talk about four centuries of tradition; no source we read backs up that length.
The Nordiska museet places the origin in western Sweden, in the 19th century, with a local festival called « Lusse Long Night » that came before the urban version. When Skansen brought it to the capital, the festival became a staging: Artur Hazelius wanted to show the « old rural customs » of western Sweden.
The press then took over. A Lucia contest run by a Stockholm daily, in 1928 according to the Nordiska museet, rewarded the girl who paraded with a crown lit by electricity. Sources disagree on the year and on the paper: Stromma cites 1927 and Svenska Dagbladet. According to Stromma, 13 December matched the winter solstice in the Julian calendar, in the Middle Ages.
Lussekatter: a Dutch bread, with late saffron
Lussekatter are small saffron buns, shaped like an S and often studded with raisins. The Nordiska museet traces their origin to the duivekater, sweet breads brought to Gothenburg by the Dutch in the 17th century. The name changed when the bun was linked to 13 December. Saffron only entered the recipe from the late 19th century. It is a late addition to an older recipe.
5. A short day: the light on 13 December
On 13 December the days are short. The Stockholm à la carte guide gives a sunrise around 8:30 am and a sunset around 2:30 pm for that date. Sessions from 4 pm to 7:30 pm therefore start in the dark. That changes how you plan the day: daytime visits happen before 2:30 pm, evening concerts are reached by street light, and the journey back is in the dark.

A short day of light
December averages on climate sites hover around 0 °C, with minimums below minus 2 °C. The sources don’t agree to the degree, and SMHI, the Swedish meteorological institute, was not consulted for this page. On 21 December, the day lasts about six hours, according to WeatherSpark.
Highlights
- Visit the churches in the morning or early afternoon, while there is still daylight.
- Keep the evening concerts for late in the day, and bring a torch for the walk.
- Dress in layers: the churches are well heated, the streets of Gamla stan are not.
6. Tickets and budget: what is paid and what is not
A Lucia Day budget depends first on the price of a concert seat, then on transport and food. The Storkyrkan box office is the only official price source we checked, and it does not publish an amount in kronor. The table below separates what is official from what is a benchmark, so you don’t mistake an estimate for a price.
| Item | Amount or rule | Status of the data |
|---|---|---|
| Storkyrkan concert | Paid, price not published in kronor, purchases non-refundable | Official (Church of Sweden) |
| Another church, cheapest category (St James’s) | 180 kronor | Anecdotal benchmark: undated press article, different church |
| Skansen, general admission | 2026 price not published; around 250 kronor according to a third-party guide | Unofficial |
| SL 75-minute ticket, adult | 43 kronor (26 reduced) | Announced by Visit Stockholm, to check on sl.se |
| Stortorget Christmas market, Gamla stan | Free entry | Stockholm Spirit guide; 2026 opening hours not confirmed |
Source: Church of Sweden in Stockholm, Storkyrkan ticketing; Skansen, Christmas at Skansen; Stockholm Spirit and Visit Stockholm guides (transport fares read through search). Checked on 18 October 2026.
For transport, the 75-minute SL ticket is announced at 43 kronor for an adult, and 26 kronor for seniors, young people up to 20 and students. Visit Stockholm published these fares in June 2026, and SL already announced them for 2025. The sl.se page could not be read: confirm the amount before you travel.
Stortorget market, which Stockholm Spirit presents as the oldest in the city, is free to enter. It opens in late November and runs until 23 December, according to the Stockholm Spirit guide. The opening hours given by the same guide, 11 am to 6 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm at weekends, are not confirmed for 2026.
7. A possible 13 December, step by step
Here is an outline that works around the known times. Two sessions on 13 December have confirmed times: Engelbrekt (Visit Stockholm listing open) and the Nordiska museet (found through search). No time is published for Storkyrkan or Skansen.
- Morning. If a church or school ceremony is announced near you, this is the time to see it, at the guides’ hour (7 am to 8 am). Otherwise, take time for a Swedish breakfast: it is also lussekatter season.
- Midday. Walk around Gamla stan before 2:30 pm, while there is still light. The Stortorget market is free to enter. If you book the two-hour Viator tour, take the 10 am slot: it ends before dark, whereas the 2 pm one would end after sunset.
- Late afternoon. Head to Östermalm for the Engelbrektskyrkan session at 4 pm, or to Djurgården for the Nordiska museet concert at 5 pm. Allow for the journey in the dark, bring a torch, and check the walking route before you set off.
- Evening. The second Engelbrekt session is at 6 pm, and the Nordiska museet one at 7:30 pm. End with the journey back, which is in the dark.
If you want Skansen, set aside a separate day: its 2026 programme is not published. The 2025 times serve as a benchmark, with no commitment attached.
8. Depending on your profile: family, couple, tight budget, first time
- Families with young children. The Storkyrkan concert may not suit the youngest. An undated programme page, probably from 2025, gives six years as the minimum age for the Lucia concerts. Confirm it at the box office before you buy.
- Couples. The 6 pm session at Engelbrektskyrkan suits a short evening, followed by dinner in the neighbourhood. Ask the box office, when you buy, whether two seats side by side are available.
- Tight budget. The Stortorget market, the churches (if a free session is announced) and a stroll around Gamla stan cost nothing. Save your budget for one concert seat, and avoid unauthorised resellers, which the Church warns against.
- First time in Sweden. Don’t look for a single event, but for a day built around two or three venues. A church concert and a café in Gamla stan already give a fair idea of the season.
Three traps stand out in the sources we read: believing the cathedral is free, booking a return train before knowing whether the session goes ahead on the 13th, and treating an old article as current. A Swedish public broadcaster article from 2019 and a 2009 guide describe customs that may have changed.
What other guides don’t tell you
One point is missing from every guide we read: the Storkyrkan concerts page, updated on 23 September 2026, lists « Lucia i Storkyrkan, G F Händel: Messias » with no date. The 2026 programme is therefore not necessarily the traditional procession repertoire: it still needs confirming with the Church (Storkyrkan concerts page, checked on 18 October 2026).
9. Lucia today: schools, debate and practice
The festival is not limited to churches. It is also practised in schools, nurseries and workplaces, according to the national inventory. That is also what makes it often invisible to visitors. Levande kulturarv presents it as a living tradition.
It is also debated. During a parliamentary interpellation on 6 February 2026, MP Markus Wiechel (SD) questioned Education Minister Simona Mohamsson (L) about Lucia celebrations in schools. In his written question 2025/26:212, « Luciafirande för barn », he claims that some schools are dropping the festival, especially in the big cities, so as not to exclude pupils. The minister replies that the festival is part of cultural heritage and that each school, with its headteacher, decides. The « 30 to 40% » loss of guaranteed music time is the question author’s figure: it has not been verified, and no nationwide quantified survey has been found to date.
For a traveller, the consequence is simple: a school Lucia is often invisible to visitors, while a church or museum Lucia runs to a programme published in advance. Depending on the neighbourhood and the year, both coexist.
Practical information for 13 December
13 December 2026 is a Sunday, and it is not a public holiday in Sweden. Shop and transport opening hours on Sundays have not been checked for this date: don’t assume they are either open or closed, and check the websites of the venues you want to visit.
To get around, Storkyrkan is in Gamla stan, on foot from the centre. For Skansen and the Nordiska museet, on Djurgården, the tram or bus from the centre are the usual options, to confirm on sl.se. For Engelbrektskyrkan, the Visit Stockholm listing recommends Tekniska högskolan station. For a fuller trip over the season, also read our Christmas in Stockholm 2026 guide.

What day is Lucia Day in Stockholm in 2026?
The festival is held on 13 December, and that day falls on a Sunday in 2026. It is not a public holiday in Sweden, and schools decide their own programme. The tradition is lived in churches, schools, workplaces and at home, according to the national inventory Levande kulturarv. For the exact sessions, see the table in section 2, which separates confirmed dates from unpublished ones.
Where can I see the Lucia procession in Stockholm?
Storkyrkan, the cathedral in Gamla stan, is the most cited venue, but 13 December 2026 is not confirmed there. For that date, Visit Stockholm lists sessions at Engelbrektskyrkan, at 4 pm and 6 pm, and a listing read through search gives a concert at the Nordiska museet, at 5 pm and 7:30 pm. Skansen has announced a 2026 programme with no dates published.
Is the Lucia concert at Storkyrkan free?
No. The Church of Sweden says tickets are bought online at musikstorkyrkanstjacob.com or through Nortic, that they are non-refundable, and that the box office on the door closes during concerts. One guide calls the ceremony free: the Church’s official page takes precedence. The price in kronor is not published.
What time does the morning procession start?
Guides give 7 am to 8 am for the morning ceremonies in churches. The Visit Stockholm guide of 3 August 2026 says: « Early in the morning on December 13th, or later in the day ». No 2026 morning time is published for Storkyrkan as of the 18 October 2026 check.
How much is a Skansen ticket on Lucia Day?
General admission gives access to the festival, as the 2025 programme showed. Skansen has not published the 2026 price. The Stockholm Spirit guide gives around 250 kronor for an adult, with children under 15 free: that is a third-party estimate. Check the price on skansen.se before you go.
Why is Lucia celebrated on 13 December?
The date matches the legendary martyrdom of Saint Lucia of Syracuse, in 304, according to the Nordiska museet. The modern festival was launched at Skansen in 1893 according to the national inventory, and the Nordiska museet credits the initiative to Artur Hazelius. The press spread it in the 1920s. The link with the saint is, according to the national inventory, very indirect.
What are lussekatter?
They are small saffron buns, shaped like an S and often studded with raisins. The Nordiska museet traces their origin to the duivekater, breads brought to Gothenburg by the Dutch in the 17th century. Saffron only entered the recipe from the late 19th century. They are eaten during the festival period.
Do schools still celebrate Lucia?
Practice varies from one school to another. In 2026, the Education Minister tells Parliament, in question 2025/26:212, that the festival is part of cultural heritage and that each school decides. The question points to some schools dropping it, but no verified national figure allows those cases to be measured.
