The full coach circuit remains the best choice for the Ring of Kerry from Killarney in November and December 2026: 6.5 hours, €38 to €70 per person, open 57 days out of 60. No excursion lands on Skellig Michael: according to Travel Extra, the 2026 season ended early. The jaunting cars start on 2 or 19 November.

Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

When you plan the Ring of Kerry from Killarney for November or December, the question is no longer « what is there to see? » but « what is still running? ». I went through the list of excursions against the dates, and the answer is tighter than you might expect. Of the eleven products that clear Killarney’s quality bar (a rating of at least 4.7 and at least 100 reviews), only six have open dates between 1 November and 30 December 2026. The other five are closed for the season, sold out for the period, or open on a single day only. To reach eight listings, two coach tours from the lower tier (a rating of at least 4.5 and 50 reviews) were added: the coach tour in listing 4 and the private tour in listing 5.

This guide only includes experiences you can book for this winter: eight in total, split between two coach tours, two private tours, one guided walk in the park, one horseback ride and two jaunting-car rides. For each one, the dates shown are the ones that are actually open, not a general availability. If you only take one product, the full coach circuit is the simplest way to see the Iveragh Peninsula in a day, and you can check its availability on Viator.

Two points matter: no excursion lands on Skellig Michael, according to Travel Extra, and two jaunting-car rides only start in November. Each listing shows the open days in the window and the meeting point where it is known.

Why the Ring of Kerry feels different in winter

Lake and trails of Killarney National Park

Killarney is the base camp. The town is the starting point for almost all the excursions in this selection, and from it you reach Killarney National Park, with its lakes, trails, Torc Waterfall and Muckross House, then the entrance to the Iveragh Peninsula. The Ring of Kerry, the road that circles this peninsula, is driven by coach, by private car or only in part, and the durations vary a lot. Full circuits last 6.5 to 8 hours; the walk lasts 2 hours; the horse ride and the jaunting cars last one hour. The full circuit (listing 1) passes Ladies View, Moll’s Gap and Derrynane Bay. So the full loop is one long day, while a walk or a horse ride stays inside the park and lasts only a few hours.

The real difference is the season. According to Travel Extra, the Office of Public Works ended the 2026 visitor season on Skellig Michael early, from 21 September, for weather and sea-condition reasons, and landings will not resume before 2027. One operator’s page still shows a season from mid-May to the end of September: it predates the early closure. That closure rests only on Travel Extra. For a trip in November or December 2026, no excursion lands on the island. What remains accessible is the rock seen from the road or from the coast.

Winter in Kerry is also the wettest season, often with strong wind. Travel guides cite average temperatures of 4 to 8 °C and days that may last only about eight hours in December (MileHacker; Champion Traveler). These figures come from guides, not from an official weather record for the period: keep them as an order of magnitude. In practice, a 6.5-hour circuit takes up the whole day, and the short December days can bring it to an end at dusk, while the walks and horse rides play out over a few hours of daylight.

Places on land also change their hours. The official Muckross House page lists, for November and December, opening from 9:15 to 17:30, with last admission at 16:00. Another source reports a one-week closure at Christmas (RatedTrips): check the official site for holiday dates. The park’s visitor centre, Killarney House, closed from 24 December to 1 January according to a nationalparks.ie notice dating from about 2024, and the park’s news page gives no winter hours. Ross Castle’s winter hours are not confirmed: ask the operator whether an indoor visit is possible. These places matter mainly if you plan a free stop before or after your excursion.

The 8 excursions compared: price, rating and open days

The table uses the figures recorded on 18 October 2026. All prices are per adult, for two travellers. Child fares and minimum ages are not recorded here: check the listing before booking with children. Open days are counted over the window from 1 November to 30 December 2026, that is 60 days.

The 8 Ring of Kerry tours to book from Killarney

1. The full Ring of Kerry tour, national park included

Rating 4.78 (612 reviews) 6.5 hours €38 to €70 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation Available 57 days out of 60

If you only book one excursion, book this one. It is the most complete circuit in the selection: six and a half hours on an air-conditioned coach around the Iveragh Peninsula, with the stops that make the road famous, Ladies View and Moll’s Gap, then Sneem, Waterville and Derrynane Bay. Killarney National Park is included in the route. The price per person is the lower of the two coach circuits, and the listing shows 57 open dates out of the 60 in the window, with instant confirmation. Two caveats. The sheepdog demonstration is presented as seasonal: do not count on it in November or December. The Viator listing does not name the departure point: ask the operator before you pay. For a day without driving, it is the default choice.

  • Ladies View, Moll’s Gap, Sneem, Waterville, Derrynane Bay
  • Driver-guide, air-conditioned vehicle, local taxes
  • Tips not included, free cancellation as stated on the listing

2. The private tour, picked up at your hotel

Rating 4.87 (197 reviews) 6 to 8 hours €325.96 per adult (base 2 people) Private tour Available 60 days out of 60

The format for those who want to decide the route. The guide collects you from your hotel, B&B or private meeting point in Killarney, and the circuit runs clockwise. The guide chooses the stops, including the Cliffs of Kerry, which is what sets it apart from a coach tour with a fixed schedule. The duration varies from 6 to 8 hours depending on the route agreed with the guide. The recorded price is €651.92 for two adults, that is €325.96 per person. Confirmation is not immediate: book early if you have a fixed date.

  • Pickup at your hotel, B&B or a private place in Killarney
  • Air-conditioned vehicle, private transport, bottled water
  • Free cancellation, manual confirmation

3. The guided walk in the park

Rating 4.85 (388 reviews) 2 hours €16 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation Available 60 days out of 60

The only format on the list that needs neither a vehicle nor a mount. The meeting point is at 11:00, in front of O’Sheas Funeral Home, Lower New Street, opposite the cathedral: you walk there from the centre. Two hours on foot in the park, with a stop at a thatched-roof cottage and at Knockreer House. Everything happens outdoors on trails, so the weather matters more here than elsewhere. It is also the lowest price on the list: €16 per person for two. This is not an excursion towards the Ring, since you stay in the park. For a first half-day in Killarney, when the full tour is too long to fit in, it is the best starting point. Bring walking shoes and a rain jacket.

  • Departure at 11:00 in front of the cathedral
  • Thatched-roof cottage and Knockreer House

4. The coach tour, if the first one is full

Rating 4.66 (783 reviews) 6.5 hours €40 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation Available 52 days out of 60

The fallback for the first circuit, to keep if its dates are taken. The operator, Wild Kerry Daytours, has 783 reviews, the broadest base in the selection, for a rating of 4.66: lower than the others, but more thoroughly tested. The duration is the same, 6.5 hours, and the €40 per person fare is just above. The listing mentions a view of the Skellig rock: understand it as seen from the road, since no excursion in this selection lands on the island. The Viator listing does not name the departure point: ask the operator before you pay. Dates stop on 22 December: from 23 to 30 December there are no departures. If your stay falls in the last week of the year, choose another format.

  • 6.5-hour circuit from Killarney

5. The private tour via the Skellig Ring

Rating 5.0 (66 reviews) 7 to 8 hours €345 per adult (base 2 people) Private tour Available 60 days out of 60

The top of the list, and the one to read with the most caution. The rating is perfect, 5.0, but it rests on 66 reviews: a good signal, not a guarantee of volume. The format is private, with a vehicle reserved for your group and a booster seat available, for a 7 to 8 hour tour that includes the Skellig Ring road. The listing text talks about Skellig, but the Skellig Ring is a scenic road: no excursion in this selection lands on the island. Confirmation is manual, and the Viator listing does not name the departure point: ask the operator before you pay. For two adults, the recorded price is €690, against €651.92 for the private tour in listing 2, which also goes round the ring. Compare before you choose.

6. One hour on horseback in the national park

Rating 4.83 (105 reviews) 1 hour €107 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation Available 60 days out of 60

The only horse option on the list. The stables are about 2 km west of Killarney, on the road to Killorglin, and the listing says they open at 9:00 all year round. You take a one-hour guided ride through the national park, which the listing describes as a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1981. Transport to the stables is not included: plan to get there by your own means. The fare is €107 per person for two. The listing advises against the activity for people with back problems and for pregnant women, a point to read before booking. For a beginner or a relaxed rider it is a calm hour; for a real horse trek, look elsewhere.

  • Stables open all year, from 9:00
  • Guide and mount for one hour
  • No transport included

7. The jaunting car from the station to the lake shore

Rating 4.8 (328 reviews) 1 hour €45 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation Available 42 days out of 60

The shortest journey on the list, door to door. The departure is from the Great Southern Hotel, East Avenue Road, next to the railway station: no coach to catch. The car passes the cathedral spire and then heads for the lake shores, as far as Ross Castle. Two caveats. First, the window only opens on 19 November: that makes 42 dates out of 60, and nothing before. Second, the ride goes to the area around Ross Castle, on the shore: do not count on a visit inside without checking with the operator. At €45 per person for two, it is the jaunting car easiest to fit between two other excursions, provided you are in Killarney after 19 November.

  • Departure from the Great Southern Hotel, near the station
  • Past the cathedral spire, then towards the lakes

8. The Muckross jaunting car, eight days only

Rating 4.95 (204 reviews) 1 hour €48.99 per adult (base 2 people) Private tour Available 8 days out of 60

A 4.95 rating over 204 reviews, the second highest in the selection after the classic private tour, and the least open: eight dates only, from 2 to 9 November 2026. If your stay falls on those days, this is the one I would put first. The meeting point is at Shepherd’s Lodge, in Muckross, so you are already inside the park, and the listing describes Muckross Abbey, built in the 15th century, as a stop on the route. It is one hour in a private vehicle, with free cancellation. The recorded fare is €48.99 per person for two. Outside those eight days there is no slot left for this listing: do not present it as a December option. For later dates, the station jaunting car takes over, provided you are in Killarney after 19 November.

  • Muckross Abbey on the route, according to the listing

Practical tips on the spot

Choose your dates first, then the format. The date rules out the most options. Between 10 and 18 November, no jaunting car runs: what remains is the coach tours, the walk, the horse ride and the private tours. The table shows the number of open days for each listing.

Killarney is the base for almost everything. The walk starts from the centre, in front of the cathedral; the station jaunting car leaves from the Great Southern Hotel; the Muckross jaunting car meets at Shepherd’s Lodge; the horse ride leaves from the stables west of town. For three listings (the first coach tour, the Wild Kerry Daytours circuit and the classic private tour), the Viator listing does not name the departure point: ask the operator before you pay.

The 6.5-hour circuits take up the whole day, and in December the short days can bring them to an end at dusk. For the circuits and the Muckross jaunting car, the departure time is not shown on the listing: ask for it when you book. Do not plan a train or a tight flight the same evening. For the jaunting cars and the horse ride, which last one hour, the constraint is mostly the departure time: check it when you book.

The budget depends mainly on the format. For two adults, the walk costs €32, the jaunting cars between €90 and €98, the horse ride €214, the coach tours €76 to €140 for two (€38 to €70 per person), and the private tours between €652 and €690. To keep the budget down, combine the walk with one coach tour. Tips are not included for the first coach tour, the Wild Kerry Daytours circuit and the station jaunting car: budget for them on top, as you would elsewhere.

Your profile changes the choices. With family, the walk and the jaunting cars stay short, provided the children can manage two hours of walking and one hour in a jaunting car. A couple who wants to see everything will take the full circuit, then the station jaunting car if their dates fall after 19 November. A small group that wants to decide the route will look at the private tours, bearing in mind that two of them are confirmed by hand. For reduced mobility, none of the listings read here details accessibility: ask the operator before booking, especially for the coach and the jaunting cars.

Three mistakes come up again and again. Counting on a crossing to Skellig Michael this season: some listings still mention Skellig, and they should be read as a view from the road. Counting on a visit inside Ross Castle without having confirmed it. Booking a date without checking the listing’s calendar, because the window is not the same for every product.

Pack waterproof walking shoes and a windproof layer. The coach tours are indoors, but the stops are outside, and the walk, the horse ride and the jaunting cars take place outdoors. Check the weather the day before, not a week before. Also re-read this guide when you book: Viator listings change, and dates are added or closed. The figures on this page date from 18 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Which excursion from Killarney has the best rating?

The classic private tour scores 5.0, but on only 66 reviews, which makes it a more fragile signal. The Muckross jaunting car follows with 4.95 from 204 reviews, but it has only eight dates, from 2 to 9 November 2026. For a solid rating across the whole period, the private tour (4.87 from 197 reviews) and the guided walk (4.85 from 388 reviews) are open 60 days out of 60; the full coach circuit has 4.78 from 612 reviews and 57 open days out of 60. See the Muckross jaunting car.

Can you land on Skellig Michael in November or December 2026?

No. According to Travel Extra, the island’s visitor season ended early on 21 September 2026, for weather and sea-condition reasons, with a return expected in 2027. No excursion in this selection lands on the island. The private Skellig Ring tour and the coach tour offer a view of the rock from the road: in both cases, there is no landing. Check with the Office of Public Works before planning a crossing.

How much does an excursion from Killarney cost for two people?

The fares recorded on 18 October 2026 range from €32 for two, for the 2-hour guided walk, to €690 for two, for the 7 to 8 hour private tour. Coach tours cost between €76 and €140 for two adults depending on the date, and jaunting cars between €90 and €98. Prices may change when you book: the amount shown on the Viator listing is the one that counts.

Is the Ring of Kerry open in December?

Yes, but not for every excursion. The first coach tour runs almost every day in December, except 24 to 26 December. The private tours, the guided walk, the horse ride and the station jaunting car run until 30 December. The Wild Kerry Daytours circuit stops on 22 December. The Muckross jaunting car, for its part, has no slots in December. The table shows the open days for each excursion.

Do the jaunting cars run all winter?

No. The station jaunting car only starts on 19 November, with 42 dates open out of 60. The Muckross jaunting car opens only from 2 to 9 November 2026. Between 10 and 18 November, no jaunting car runs. The station jaunting car goes to the area around Ross Castle: ask the operator whether an indoor visit is possible before counting it in your programme.

Should you book in advance?

Yes, as soon as you have your dates. Slots are limited on some listings, such as the Muckross jaunting car, which has only eight days. Two excursions are confirmed by hand: the classic private tour and the private visit picked up at your hotel. The others are confirmed straight away. For three listings, the Viator listing does not name the departure point: ask the operator before paying, and keep free cancellation in mind if the weather changes.
