Eight bookable experiences fit into Salzburg in December 2026, from $48 to $344 per adult for two travelers. The best-rated, the full-day trip to Hallstatt, costs $171 per adult (rating 4.96). For an evening out, the concert at Mirabell Palace ($48). All of them offer free cancellation.

Checked on the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

In Salzburg, December starts with the market, which is open to everyone. We did not want to give you yet another list of chalets: our guide to the Christmas market does that job, opening hours included. This article answers a more practical question: which experiences can you really book for a specific date in December 2026, and are worth the money?

We queried the Viator partner API on October 18, 2026 for the whole period from December 1 to 31. We kept the experiences rated at least 4.7 out of 5 with more than one hundred reviews, then set aside those open on no day of the month. Five products in the destination are closed all of December and therefore do not appear. Eight listings remain, and the result is not a « Christmas special » list. Three tours go to Hallstatt, three follow the filming locations of The Sound of Music (one combines both), two are concerts, and only one is a Christmas cooking class.

We accept that imbalance, because it reflects what you can book in December in Salzburg. For each listing, you will find the duration, the price for two adults shown per person, the number of days open in the month, the rating, and the inclusions shown on the listing.

Two subjects are deliberately left out of the list. None of the eight experiences concerns the Krampus, the Perchten or the market: those are events we cover in context, without presenting them as bookings. And for two visits where Viator gives the meeting time at the supplier’s office but not the address, we write it exactly that way, without guessing an address.

The prices shown are those of the day. They may change before your trip: the check date appears under the table, and each listing links to the Viator page where the rate for your date is displayed.

What is open to everyone, what is booked: the context of December in Salzburg

The Christmas market in the Old Town and the one at Hohensalzburg Fortress make up most of the season. The fortress market opens only on some days, between November 27 and December 20, and its exact dates are in our Salzburg Christmas Market 2026 guide. We do not repeat them here: they change, and the guide is kept up to date.

Several highlights of Advent take place outside Viator. The Krampus and Perchten parades do not appear in any listing on this list: they are described in the market guide. The Hallstatt Christmas market takes place on Tuesday, December 8, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. according to the official site Dachstein Salzkammergut, consulted October 18, 2026. A third-party guide gives a closing time of 6:30 p.m.: we retain the official source, and the hours should be confirmed on site. The tourist office also runs a Christmas walking tour, which is not a Viator product: it takes place from December 1 to 18, Monday to Friday, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., lasts about 1 hour 30 minutes, and leaves from kiosk no. 95 on Residenzplatz. Its price is not shown on the page we checked on October 18, 2026: check with the tourist office before planning to pay.

Concerts form the backbone of the list for one simple reason: they run for much of the month. The Salzburg Tourism events calendar, consulted October 18, lists concerts at Mirabell Palace at 8 p.m. Concerts at the fortress do not appear on the official market page: the Viator listing for the concert with dinner shows, for December, dinner at 6 p.m. and concert at 8 p.m., except on December 4 (dinner at 8 p.m., concert at 6 p.m.). Reconfirm the time when you book.

Hallstatt calls for a different approach. The salt mine reopened on August 29, 2026 according to its official website, but its winter hours were not published on the date we checked. We therefore give no hours: check the website before planning the visit. The Hallstatt day trips on the list include or pass by the salt mine visit depending on the itinerary; this is to be confirmed at booking. Ask the supplier whether it is planned for your date.

A word on the theme, so you can choose knowingly. Only the cooking class explicitly mentions Christmas, with its cookies. The music and film-location tours are not Christmas tours: they run during the month and have nothing to do with the holiday. The common thread of this list is therefore the season, not festive decor, and that is what lets you read it as a December program rather than a postcard.

The 8 experiences to book in Salzburg in December 2026

Full-day guided trip to Hallstatt, lakes and mountains of Austria
Photo: Viator

1. Full day to Hallstatt, Austrian lakes and mountains

Rated 4.96 out of 5 (137 reviews) 8 hours $171 per adult (based on 2) Free cancellation

This is the best-rated listing on the list, and one of the longest: eight hours covering the Fuschl and St. Wolfgang lakes, Gosau and Hallstatt. Transport is by air-conditioned minibus, with eight travelers maximum and a driver-guide. Pickup is at your hotel in central Salzburg, from a list of about 110 properties, and the return is near Mirabell Gardens, a short walk from the Old Town.

Who it suits: those who have only one day out of the city and do not want to drive in the mountains. The slot is open 29 days out of 31 in December; the 12th and the 25th are missing. The catch: an eight-hour day leaves little room for a late return. Keep the evening of your outing free rather than a tight appointment.

  • Lakes of Fuschl and St. Wolfgang, Gosau and Hallstatt
  • Air-conditioned minibus, eight people maximum
  • Free pickup at your Salzburg hotel

2. Christmas cookie and apple strudel cooking class

Rated 4.86 out of 5 (185 reviews) 1 hour 30 minutes $74 per adult (based on 2) Free cancellation

This is the only listing on the list whose theme is explicitly Christmas. Each participant bakes their own Christmas cookies and an apple strudel, with a chef, in a small group. The meal is included, and everyone leaves with a bag for the leftover cookies. Meet at the cooking school, Ursulinenplatz 9, near the Mönchsberg elevator. There is no hotel pickup: get to the school on your own, which is easy from the center.

Who it suits: families, and couples who want a seated afternoon activity; the listing highlights the format as family-friendly. The catch: the slot does not run every day (27 days out of 31 in December), and you must book the specific day, not just the month.

  • Cookies and strudel made with a chef
  • Lunch included, and a bag for the leftovers
  • No hotel pickup

3. Concert in the marble hall of Mirabell Palace

Rated 4.79 out of 5 (624 reviews) 1 hour 45 minutes $48 per adult (based on 2) Free cancellation

This is the most-reviewed listing on the list, with 624 reviews. You attend a live concert in the baroque marble hall of Mirabell Palace, lasting about 1 hour 45 minutes. Seats are numbered: category I (rows 1 to 10) or category II (seated places). The cloakroom is free. Among its inclusions, the listing mentions only the seat, the concert and the cloakroom.

Who it suits: couples, music lovers, and those who want an indoor evening concert, without the cold. The timing: the Salzburg Tourism calendar lists concerts at Mirabell Palace at 8 p.m.; check the time for your date before paying. The catch: the category is printed on the ticket, and it decides how far you sit from the stage.

  • Live concert in the Mirabell Palace marble hall
  • Numbered seats, category I or II
  • Free cloakroom, refreshments not included

4. The Sound of Music and Hallstatt in one day

Rated 4.79 out of 5 (230 reviews) 8 hours $176 per adult (based on 2) Free cancellation

A guided eight-hour day from Salzburg. After an account of the Von Trapp family’s story, the tour stops at several filming locations of the film, then heads to Hallstatt. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the driver-guide speaks English. It is a public group tour, not a private one.

Who it suits: those who want the film and the lake in the same day, without arranging the trip. The meeting point is at the supplier’s office at 8:30 a.m., and Viator does not give the address. The catch: the guide speaks English, and the inclusions mention neither meals nor entrance fees. If you prefer a private vehicle, the private tour is the other option.

  • Air-conditioned vehicle, English-speaking driver-guide
  • Meeting at the supplier’s office at 8:30 a.m.

Same destination as listing 1, with a program centered on the 5 Fingers platform on the Dachstein. The listing indicates 20 to 30 minutes of easy to moderate walking from the top of the lift to reach the platforms. Hotel pickup in Salzburg is free, from a list of about 110 properties, and the day ends near Mirabell Gardens.

Who it suits: those who want a dramatic viewpoint rather than a village day. The catch is the date: this slot runs only from December 19 to 31, that is 13 days out of 31. The exclusions text published on this listing has not been reused here: reread it when you book, and rely on the December price checked on October 18, which is the one shown in the table.

A private visit in a Mercedes E 220 or an air-conditioned VW, with a driver-guide who walks you in the footsteps of Maria and the Von Trapps. The option includes a one-hour apple strudel class at Edelweiss, with tasting. The vehicle and the guide are reserved for you alone, which changes the pace of the day and your freedom to stop.

Who it suits: those who prefer a private vehicle, or who are organizing the day for a small group. It is the highest price on the list: $687 for two adults. Hotel pickup covers only a selection of hotels; outside the center, the start is at the Panorama bus terminal or Mirabell Square. The catch: check that your hotel is on the list before booking.

8. 4-hour tour of the filming locations and the Old Town

Rated 4.72 out of 5 (388 reviews) 4 hours $92 per adult (based on 2) Free cancellation

The least expensive tour on the list for a route through the film sites: four hours with the filming locations and a guided walk through the Old Town. The group is limited to 19 people, which makes it more personal than a standard tour bus. Refreshments are served at the supplier’s office, and the guide drives the vehicle and speaks English.

Who it suits: travelers who want to see the film sites without spending the whole day on them. It is also the most available listing: it is open all 31 days of December. The meeting point is the supplier’s office, at 8:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. departure and at 1:30 p.m. for the 2 p.m. departure; Viator does not give the address. Practical tips on the ground

Fix the date before the experience. In the table, the days-available column matters more than the price. A day that is open only from December 19 to 31 cannot be made up at the start of the month, and a $48 concert is no use on a day it is closed. Choose your dates first, then keep only the listings that fall on them.

Work out the budget per person. For two paid activities on the same day, two combinations: the Mirabell Palace concert ($48 per adult) with the cooking class ($74), about $122 per adult; or the Hallstatt day ($171) with the concert, about $219 per adult, provided you check the return time: the listings only give an end near Mirabell Gardens, with no hour. Drinks, tips and meals outside the program are not included in these amounts, unless the listing says otherwise.

Organize your transport. In central Salzburg, walk: the cooking class, Mirabell Palace and the Old Town are close to one another. Several tours include hotel pickup, but only from a list of properties provided by the operator. Check that your hotel is on it before booking, otherwise the starting point becomes a bus terminal or a specific square.

Adapt the choice to your profile. With family, the cooking class is presented as family-friendly, and it is stroller-accessible. For a person with reduced mobility, the listing for the Mirabell Palace concert describes it as accessible, and the Hallstatt day is listed as suitable for all physical conditions; nothing is said about road conditions in December, so ask the supplier. The 5 Fingers day, meanwhile, is listed as requiring a moderate fitness level and is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking. For a couple who want an evening, the fortress concert with dinner is the most complete option.

Avoid four common mistakes. Booking the 5 Fingers platform outside December 19 to 31. Taking a concert seat without looking at the category. Assuming a « Christmas » list contains only Christmas: only one listing in eight is about it. Finally, reading the exclusions once and not again when you pay, because some texts mix summer rates or equipment rental.

Plan for the cold. December calls for layers, warm clothes and shoes that handle snow, especially for mountain excursions and the walk back through the Old Town.

Frequently asked questions

Which experience should I choose in Salzburg in December for a single day?

The Hallstatt day is the best-rated on the list: 4.96 out of 5 from 137 reviews, eight hours by minibus, $171 per adult for two. It is open 29 days out of 31 in December. If you would rather stay in the city, the Mirabell Palace concert, at $48 per adult, is the least expensive and the most reviewed. The choice depends mostly on how tiring a day you are willing to take and on your budget.

Are the experiences on this list open for the whole month of December?

Not all of them. The October 18, 2026 check shows that the four-hour film-locations tour is open all 31 days, while the 5 Fingers platform is open only from December 19 to 31, that is 13 days. The concerts and the Hallstatt day run between 27 and 29 days. Check your date on the listing before booking, since availability can change.

Can I cancel a booking free of charge?

Every listing on this list showed free cancellation at the October 18, 2026 check. Full refunds apply up to 24 hours before departure, according to the policy shown on these listings on October 18, 2026. Reread it on each listing when you pay, and keep your booking confirmation.

Are Christmas markets and the Krampus bookable on Viator?

No. None of the eight experiences covers the market, the Krampus or the Perchten, and we do not present them as bookings. These are public events, with dates and times in our Salzburg Christmas Market 2026 guide. Start with that guide to plan your days, then choose the slot for the experience you book.

Why are prices given per adult for two travelers?

Because the Viator price depends on the date and the number of participants: the same tour can cost differently for four than for two, or on another day. We recorded the total for two adults over December 1 to 31, 2026, then divided it by two. These amounts are not fixed public rates: the table shows the date of the check.

What is the difference between a public and a private tour in Salzburg?

A public tour, such as the four-hour film-locations tour ($92 per adult, based on two travelers), shares the group with other travelers, up to 19 people. The private Sound of Music original tour ($344 per adult, based on two travelers) reserves the vehicle and the driver-guide for you, with hotel pickup from a selection of hotels. The public format is the least expensive of the guided tours on the list.
