The Athens Marathon 2026 takes place on Sunday 8 November 2026: start at 8:30 am in Marathon, finish in the Panathenaic Stadium. As of 18 October 2026, the organiser’s official site showed conflicting registration statuses, and free public entry to the stadium applied in 2025, not confirmed for 2026.
Checked on against the official sources cited (organiser, Panathenaic Stadium, Athens tourist office).
Sunday 8 November 2026, Athens runs to the rhythm of the marathon. Runners set off from the town of Marathon (thisisathens.org) and head for the Panathenaic Stadium in the heart of the capital. Whether you’re running or coming to watch the finish, this guide gives the times, dates and points to check for both options, with the date each piece of information was checked.
Two things up front. Several guides give 9:00 am as the marathon start, but the organiser lists 8:30 am. And the registration status contradicts itself on the official site: we won’t decide for you, and we tell you where to check.
The weekend programme, race by race
The marathon isn’t a standalone race. The weekend includes four events besides the marathon, three of them on Saturday. The programme below comes from the organiser’s official site, checked on 18 October 2026.
Saturday 7 November is the day most third-party guides forget. If you’re bringing a child, the 1.2 km children’s race starts at 4:00 pm, followed by the 5 km road race at 5:00 pm. The 5 km night race at 8:00 pm is reserved for students.
| Day | Race | Start |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday 7 November | Children’s race, 1.2 km (Telekom) | 4:00 pm |
| Saturday 7 November | 5 km road (Telekom) | 5:00 pm |
| Saturday 7 November | 5 km university night race (allwyn), students only | 8:00 pm |
| Sunday 8 November | 10 km road (allwyn) | 8:00 am |
| Sunday 8 November | Marathon | 8:30 am |

Watching the finish at the Panathenaic Stadium
The Panathenaic Stadium, or Kallimarmaro, is a marble stadium in the heart of Athens. It hosted the first modern Olympic Games, in 1896, and the marathons of the 2004 Games finished there. Today it is still the finish of the race. According to finishers.com, the stretch run inside the stadium before the finish line is 170 m. No other source confirms that figure.
For spectators, three points matter. In 2025, entry was free for the public (stadium notice, 9 November 2025). For 2026, no notice had been found as of 18 October 2026: not confirmed, check with the stadium. The stadium’s opening time is not published in the sources we read: it is set by the federation (SEGAS) and was communicated late in 2025. In 2025, the stadium was also closed to the public from 4 to 10 November.

Panathenaic Stadium: the finish in the heart of Athens
The finish takes place inside the stadium, according to thisisathens.org and realgreekexperiences.com (the latter unofficial for 2026). The first runners are expected around 10:30 am according to vivreathenes.com, an unofficial site that gives no official time. No finish-time cut-off was found in the sources we read, and the 2026 rules have not been checked.
Highlights
- You see the runners cross the line on the track, not at the edge of a street.
- The stadium is downtown: a morning finish you can reach without a long trip, if traffic allows.
- A private tour sold by Viator ends at the stadium: its route and day still need checking with the operator. Immediate confirmation and free cancellation, according to the listing (checked on 18 October 2026): read the exact conditions before you pay.
Race day, step by step
The table groups the landmarks for Sunday 8 November. The « Status » column shows where each piece of information comes from: the organiser, an unofficial site, or nothing at all.

Running the marathon: registration, bibs and start
Registration opened on Friday 24 April 2026 at 12:00 pm, according to the Athens tourist office (thisisathens.org, checked on 18 October 2026). Announced fees range from €75 to €165 depending on the race and registration date. The lowest fee, €75, applied to early registration, and that window closed by 18 October 2026. The sources we read don’t give a breakdown by race.
The point that matters today is the status. The official site shows “REGISTRATION FOR THE RACE IS SOLD OUT” in the marathon section, while the top banner reads “Registrations are open”. The two messages contradict each other. As of 18 October 2026, we cannot say a place is still available, so check athensauthenticmarathon.gr or write to the organisers before planning a trip to run.
A third-party guide quotes €165, €85 and €90 for three options. The official site doesn’t confirm these figures, so don’t rely on them without checking. Charity bibs also have a deadline: Amnesty International Greece had announced 25 September 2026, now passed.

Picking up your bib in Faliro
Bibs are collected in Faliro, according to finishers.com. The catch is simple: according to that source, there is no pickup on race day. A runner who arrives on Sunday morning must therefore have collected the bib beforehand. Detailed times are in the table below.
Highlights
- Pickup runs over four days, with three evenings open until 9:00 pm, Wednesday to Friday.
- The 10 km starts at 8:00 am and the marathon at 8:30 am: choose your distance before planning the trip.
- Pickup times come from a third-party site endorsed by the organiser: cross-check them before you travel.
Bibs: pickup times
| Day | Date | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday | 4 November 2026 | 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm |
| Thursday | 5 November 2026 | 10:00 am to 9:00 pm |
| Friday | 6 November 2026 | 10:00 am to 9:00 pm |
| Saturday | 7 November 2026 | 10:00 am to 8:00 pm |
| Sunday | 8 November 2026 | No pickup |
Source: finishers.com (validated by the organiser), checked on 18 October 2026. Cross-check the times with the official site: the « Teams Pickup » section was not readable on 2 October 2026.
The course profile matters more than the start time for a runner. A runner’s review on RaceCheck (search excerpt, not checked on the page) describes continuous climbs and descents between the 10th and 32nd kilometres, with a tendency to climb. The same review reports too few toilets and a long wait to collect kit bags at the finish. These are testimonies, not official measurements. No source we read gives a time cut-off: the 2026 rules still need checking on the official site.
Getting to the start in Marathon, then back to Athens
Transport is the least documented part of this edition. Two unofficial sites mention organiser buses but disagree on the starting point: metro stations for one, Syntagma Square for the other. Neither gives a timetable or a fare, and we found no official confirmation for 2026. Treat these buses as a possibility, not a certainty.
Without written confirmation, plan a journey you can control: taxi, private transfer or scheduled bus, booked or checked the day before. Ask the organiser for the meeting point and shuttle times before paying for anything.
For the trip back to the centre, the metro is the most readable option. Lines 2 and 3 have run 24 hours a day on Saturdays since 13 September 2025, according to OASA, as reported by the Greek press. For Sunday 8 November 2026, we found no official timetable: two third-party sites give first departures at 5:30 am and 5:00 am, and that conflict is unresolved. Check the operator’s website during marathon week.
From the airport, two fares are circulating. The metro would cost €9 or €10, the X95 bus €5.50 or €6.50, depending on the source. These prices conflict: check them on the STASY and OASA sites before you travel. Realgreekexperiences.com, an unofficial source for 2026, recommends the airport metro on race day.
On the roads, according to realgreekexperiences.com (unofficial source), the avenues Marathonos, Messogion, Vasilisis Sofias and Irodou Attikou are closed from early morning until 5 to 6 pm. Reopening was announced for around 6:30 pm in 2025 (Protothema, To Vima, search excerpts, not checked on the page). No official traffic plan for 2026 has been found.

November weather in Athens: what the averages say
Open-Meteo data, drawn from the ERA5 archive for Athens over 2015-2025, point to a mild start to November. Average temperatures range from 12 °C at night to 20 °C in the afternoon, and it rains on average less than 2 mm a day. These averages guarantee nothing for race day.
The race weekend can still be wet: rainfall over 6 to 10 November totalled 49.9 mm in 2022 and 65.3 mm in 2025. Pack a rain layer whatever the average says.
| Indicator | Average value | What it means for spectators |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum temperature | 20.2 °C | Comfortable for standing at the stadium |
| Minimum temperature | 12.1 °C | Bring a layer for the morning |
| Precipitation | 1.86 mm per day | Rain possible, rarely for long |
| Rainy days | 18% | About one day in five |
| Sunshine | 8.7 hours per day | Bright days on average |

Around the race: the Marathon museum and the other Sunday marathons
The Marathon museum and tomb open from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and are closed on Tuesdays, according to hh.gr (checked on 18 October 2026). Full price is €5, reduced €3, and the last entry is 20 minutes before closing. Entry is free on the first and third Sundays from November to March: 8 November 2026 is the second Sunday of November, so the visit is paid. The 8:30 am opening coincides with the marathon start, so a visit on race day can only happen after the start.
Two other marathons run on the same Sunday, 8 November 2026, and their criteria are dated. Málaga closes registration on Monday 2 November at 8:00 pm or once 12,000 bibs are taken, and it starts at 8:30 am. Porto starts “from 8:00 am”, and the page we read doesn’t specify registration or bib pickup.
| Race | Marathon start | Registration as of 18 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Athens (Athens Authentic Marathon) | 8:30 am, town of Marathon | Conflicting status on the official site |
| Málaga | 8:30 am | Closes Monday 2 November at 8:00 pm, or at 12,000 bibs |
| Porto (Porto Marathon) | From 8:00 am | Not specified on the page we read |

A race born from a battle and a legend
The marathon begins in 490 BC, on the plain of Marathon, where the Athenians defeated the Persians. The courier Pheidippides was a real person: Herodotus mentions him running to Sparta. The story of the run to Athens, followed by the messenger’s death, is however a legend, popularised in the 19th century by a poem by Robert Browning.
The Olympic race was born at the 1896 Athens Games, on a proposal from Michel Bréal. The current distance of 42.195 km was set in London in 1908, according to National Geographic. These landmarks separate what is documented from what is legend.
The 2026 edition is the 43rd. The World Athletics Elite label was announced on 7 April 2026 for the Athens marathon.
What other guides don’t tell you
Several popular guides give incorrect or incomplete information on five points. Here is what the sources say, consulted on 18 October 2026.
- The marathon starts at 8:30 am, not 9:00 am. Several guides give 9:00 am. The 10 km starts at 8:00 am according to the organiser, and sportifsabord.com gives 8:15 am. Source: official site, checked on 18 October 2026.
- Saturday has three races. The 1.2 km children’s race starts at 4:00 pm, the 5 km road race at 5:00 pm and the 5 km night race, for students only, at 8:00 pm. This programme is missing from several third-party guides. Source: official site, checked on 18 October 2026.
- The registration status contradicts itself. The official site shows the marathon as sold out in its race section, and announces open registration in its banner. No guide can settle this: check the 2026 registration page, checked on 18 October 2026.
- According to finishers.com, bibs can’t be collected on Sunday. Pickup takes place in Faliro from Wednesday 4 to Saturday 7 November, according to finishers.com, checked on 18 October 2026. The organiser’s site was not readable on this point on 2 October 2026: a runner who waits until Sunday won’t be able to collect their bib that day, according to this source.
- The official name is “Athens Authentic Marathon”, 43rd edition. The name “Athens Classic Marathon”, used by Wikipedia, is not the one the organiser uses. Source: official site and its news item of 29 May 2026, checked on 18 October 2026.
