Wonderland Lisboa ran at Parque Eduardo VII from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, with free entry. For 2026-2027, the press reports an opening on 27 November 2026, but the organiser had not confirmed it as of 21 October 2026. No switch-on date for the 2026 lights had been announced by that date.
Checked on against Visit Lisboa (page read) and dated press reports.
Christmas in Lisbon revolves around three landmarks: Wonderland, the lights of the centre and the neighbourhood markets. This guide separates what an official source confirms from what comes from the press or an aggregator. The 2025-2026 edition of Wonderland ran from 28 November to 4 January, with free entry. As of 21 October 2026, no 2026 switch-on date has been announced and the 2026-2027 edition is not confirmed: we therefore give the 2025 and 2025-2026 figures as verifiable references, and present the 2026-2027 dates as likely, without treating them as settled.
1. Lisbon on foot: the historic centre

The historic centre, from Rossio to Chiado
The historic centre holds the displays that Lisboa Secreta announced for the 2025 edition: a 30-metre tree on Terreiro do Paço, an installation on Praça Luís de Camões, “luminous clouds” on Rua Augusta, “golden clouds” on Rua Garrett and Rua do Ouro, and an arch tunnel on Rua do Carmo. Its article is written in the future tense: it describes these displays without confirming they were installed. A daytime walk lets you spot these streets before going back out in the evening. For other options in Lisbon, our comparison of the best guided tours in Lisbon looks at ten experiences.
What the walk covers
- Alfama, the neighbourhood on the route.
- Chiado, with its cafés and shops.
The group is capped at 14 people according to the product description, which leaves time to ask the guide questions. The walk lasts 180 to 240 minutes according to Viator, a good way to get your bearings in the centre before heading out on your own in the evening.
Who it suits, and when. This tour suits first-time visitors who want to get their bearings in the centre before going out alone after dark. It stands out for a maximum group of 14, a wine and tapas tasting included, and a private option with a guide for anyone who prefers a tailored route. The 9:30 am start finishes between 12:30 and 1:30 pm, and the 2:30 pm start between 5:30 and 6:30 pm, depending on the duration listed. The catch: the guide speaks English, and tips, meals and museum entries are not included.
2. Wonderland Lisboa: the 2025-2026 edition confirmed, the 2026-2027 one still pending

A large Christmas market in Parque Eduardo VII
Wonderland Lisboa was the most visible event of the 2025-2026 season. Visit Lisboa’s official page gives a run from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, with free entry and Parque Eduardo VII as the venue. The attractions are paid: the giant wheel, the ice rink and the rides. A European Best Destinations ranking, reported by Eco on 28 November 2025, puts the market fourth among European Christmas markets for 2026. This is a press ranking, and it should be read as one.
Advice from guides and travellers: evenings are cold and windy on Parque Eduardo VII, so bring a warm layer. The climate stays mild, without snow, though rain is possible. We have no temperature figures for this guide.
What is not confirmed for 2026-2027
The press and a travel aggregator announce an opening on Friday 27 November 2026 and a close in early January 2027, with Sunday 3 January given as the last day. An e-konomista article dated 6 October 2026 reports this opening. An aggregator also gives a different name for the event, which shows the information has not yet settled. No official confirmation had been found on the date of writing, 21 October 2026.
Before booking, two checks are enough: whether a 2026-2027 edition page has appeared on the Visit Lisboa website, which showed none on 21 October 2026, and the name of the 2026 organiser, which has not been officially identified. If either source stays silent, leave a margin in your dates and do not pay for a non-refundable ticket on the strength of the press alone.
Attraction prices for the 2024-2025 edition
Time Out (26 November 2024) gave prices of €6, €5 and €4.50 for certain attractions in the 2024-2025 edition, depending on the category. These amounts do not apply to 2026. What carries over from one edition to the next is free entry and the length of the season, not an attraction price.
| Edition | Dates | Entry | Attraction prices | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024-2025 (9th edition) | late November 2024 to early January 2025 | free | €6, €5 and €4.50 depending on category | past, press (Time Out, 26 November 2024) |

3. The illuminations: what the city published for 2025, what remains unknown for 2026

Terreiro do Paço, Rua Augusta and the centre
The 2025 switch-on took place on Saturday 22 November at 6:30 pm on Terreiro do Paço, with a performance by fado singer Sara Correia. The city council published 182 km of LED lights, 46 locations, around 1,000 light structures and 5,900 decorative pieces. Lisboa Secreta repeated these figures on 25 November 2025, and the tree was 30 metres tall.
The 2025 budget is put at €749,500 by Renascença, a figure presented as identical to those of 2022 and 2023. For 2026, a municipal tender of €750,000 was published on the Vortal platform in May 2026, according to Eco of 13 May 2026. A tender gives neither a switch-on date nor the number of locations for the coming edition.
As of 2 October 2026, Time Out Lisboa reported that installation had been under way since 14 September, with no switch-on date announced and the council not having answered the question. This guide therefore gives no 2026 switch-on date: follow the Lisbon city council’s announcements before fixing an evening.
The displays announced for 2025
- Terreiro do Paço, with the 30-metre tree and the square open onto the Tagus.
- Rua Augusta, where “luminous clouds” were announced for 2025.
- Rua Garrett and Rua do Ouro, with the announced “golden clouds”.
- Rua do Carmo, with the announced arch tunnel.

4. Neighbourhood markets: Rossio, Campo Pequeno and Praça da Figueira

Rossio: the easiest market to fit into a walk
The Rossio market fills Praça Dom Pedro IV, in the Baixa. The ADBP association, which runs the Baixa-Chiado district, gives 14 November to 21 December for the 2025 edition, from 10 am to 10 pm, and until 11 pm on some days. There are wooden chalets and a free little train for children. No 2026 edition had been announced at the time of writing: the times above apply to 2025.
Guides describe Rossio as calmer than Wonderland and better suited to young children. This is a view from guides and travellers, not a measurement. Its practical advantage is simple: it sits on the route through the centre and combines easily with a visit to Alfama or Chiado.
Campo Pequeno and Alvalade: the 2025 markets
At Campo Pequeno, the crafts are sold in a covered hall, which helps on a rainy day. Vivre à Lisbonne gives the 2025 dates as 28 November to 1 December, then 5 to 8 December, from 11 am to 9 pm, with an entry fee of about €2, free for under-12s. The Alvalade market ran from 4 to 17 December 2025, according to the same source. No 2026 edition of either market has been found.
Praça da Figueira offers regional specialities, and its 2026 dates have not been checked. It is also where you will find the Confeitaria Nacional, mentioned in section 7 of this guide.

| Rossio (Praça Dom Pedro IV) | 14 November to 21 December | 10 am to 10 pm (11 pm on some days) | wooden chalets, free little train for children | ADBP |

5. Calendar: 24, 25, 26 and 31 December, public holidays 2026-2027

The public holidays that change opening hours
Four mandatory public holidays fall in the period: Tuesday 1 December 2026 (Restoration of Independence), Tuesday 8 December (Immaculate Conception), Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) and Friday 1 January 2027 (New Year’s Day). They are among the thirteen mandatory public holidays of the Portuguese Labour Code, article 234, as cited by secondary legal sources. We did not read the consolidated version on dre.pt directly.
Christmas Eve (Consoada, 24 December) and New Year’s Eve (Réveillon, 31 December) are not legal public holidays. They are family evenings: opening hours for shops, restaurants and museums may be shorter, but no general rule sets this. Check each venue before you head out.
The metro closed at 1 am on 25 December 2025 and on 1 January 2026, reopening at 6:30 am, according to the Diário de Notícias of 23 December 2025. We have no confirmation for 2026: check the Metropolitano de Lisboa timetables the day before your journeys.
25 December, the quietest day
Can you go to Lisbon on 25 December? Yes, but most museums and monuments are closed, and transport runs at reduced frequency: the metro closed at 1 am on 25 December 2025, a 2025 timetable not confirmed for 2026. Guides also describe most shops and markets as closed that day, with no official list, so check the opening hours of each place. On 26 December, reopening depends on each business, and guides describe the 26th as a day for a stroll. If you want to get out of Lisbon that day, our comparison of day trips to Nazaré and Fátima sets out the options from the capital.

6. Getting around and budgeting: transport, Lisboa Card and museums

Carris and Metro tickets in 2026
In 2026, the one-hour Carris and Metro ticket costs €1.90 and the 24-hour ticket €7.25, according to the press (4gnews). The on-board bus ticket rises to €2.30, from €2.20 in 2025. Monthly passes are unchanged.
For the airport, the red metro line serves the Humberto Delgado terminal, with a station inside the terminal, according to 2026 transport guides. An Aerobus shuttle still appears in some guides, but a 2026 guide says it has been withdrawn. Check with the operator before relying on it.
Lisboa Card: a source to confirm
A lisbontourism.org guide dated 19 October 2026 gives the 2026-2027 Lisboa Card for an adult as €31 for 24 hours, €51 for 48 hours and €62 for 72 hours. The prices are presented as valid until 31 March 2027. This is a secondary source: confirm these amounts on the official visitlisboa.com site before buying anything.
The same guide notes that the Glória, Bica and Lavra funiculars, and the Santa Justa lift, have been closed since September 2025 and replaced by buses. Do not put them in your itinerary without checking. The card gives access to transport, including the train to Sintra and Cascais, and to about fifty museum entries according to the guide, which itself flags an inconsistency in that number.
To work it out against your own visits, based on the unit prices on Lisbon Tourism’s Lisboa Card page (to be confirmed): the Jerónimos Monastery costs €18 and the Belém Tower €15, so €33 for these two entries bought one by one, already more than the 24-hour card at €31, which includes transport. The one-hour ticket at €1.90 according to 4gnews, and a single Zapping trip at €2.05 according to the same Lisbon Tourism page, complete the comparison.
Indicative budget, from dated sources
- Transport: €1.90 for a one-hour ticket, €7.25 for a 24-hour ticket.
- Wonderland: free entry in 2025-2026; the attraction budget is still to be set, as no 2026 price has been published.
- Campo Pequeno: an entry of about €2 in 2025.
- Centre guided walk: from €19 per adult, price checked on 21 October 2026.
- Lisboa Card: €31 for 24 hours, to be confirmed on the official site.

7. Consoada, Réveillon and bolo-rei: eating at Christmas in Lisbon

24 December with family, 31 December in the centre
Consoada is the family dinner of 24 December. Boiled cod is the dish most often associated with it: it is a widespread Portuguese tradition, which we could not tie to a source for this guide, and each family has its own version. We did not check any restaurant list: only the Confeitaria Nacional was noted, for its bolo-rei. For the Christmas Eve dinner, no official source confirms opening hours or menus. Book early if you have nobody to dine with: common sense, which we have not verified.
Bolo-rei, a ring-shaped cake with candied fruit, is one of the symbols of the festive season. The Confeitaria Nacional, on Praça da Figueira, is cited by Lisboa Secreta for its bolo-rei; the same guide mentions an annual waiting list, which is a good reason to order in advance. No bolo-rei price was noted for this shop at the time of writing.
The 2025 New Year’s Eve party on Praça do Comércio was free according to Vivre à Lisbonne: a DJ from 9:30 pm, a concert at 10:30 pm and fireworks over the Tagus at midnight. The 2026 programme has not been announced. Do not plan around it without the city council’s confirmation.
8. What other guides don’t tell you
The guides we read often repeat the same generalities. Here are five points that are checked or dated, with their source and the date we consulted it.
- The exact dates of the 2025-2026 Wonderland edition. Visit Lisboa gives 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, while several guides give a start of 29 November or no date at all. Visit Lisboa (consulted 21 October 2026).
- The metro closed at 1 am on 25 December, reopening at 6:30 am. This 2025 record comes from the Diário de Notícias (23 December 2025). Guides write “reduced frequency” without a timetable. For 2026, the information is not confirmed. Source: Diário de Notícias (search extract, page not opened).
- The 2025 illumination figures: 182 km, 46 locations and a 30-metre tree. The council publishes them and Lisboa Secreta repeats them (25 November 2025). The €749,500 budget comes from the press and does not appear in any mainstream guide we read. Lisboa Secreta (consulted 21 October 2026).
- The 2026-2027 Lisboa Card, with prices valid until 31 March 2027, and closed funiculars. The Glória, Bica and Lavra funiculars, and the Santa Justa lift, have been closed since September 2025, a point missing from the 2025 guides. Lisbon Tourism (guide dated 19 October 2026, consulted 21 October 2026), secondary source.
- The 2026 switch-on date for the lights has not been announced. Time Out Lisboa, on 2 October 2026, reports installation under way since 14 September, with no date, the council not having answered. Guides present “from late November” as settled. Source: Time Out Lisboa (article of 2 October 2026, search extract).

When does Wonderland Lisboa run in 2026?
The 2025-2026 edition ran from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, according to Visit Lisboa. For 2026-2027, the press reports an opening on 27 November 2026 and a close in early January 2027, with no confirmation from the organiser as of 21 October 2026. Treat these dates as likely, and check the organiser’s website before booking a ticket or accommodation for a specific date.
Is Wonderland Lisboa free?
Entry is free for the 2025-2026 edition, according to the official Visit Lisboa page. The giant wheel, the ice rink and the rides are paid, however. 2026 prices had not been published at our verification date. The €6, €5 and €4.50 amounts quoted by Time Out date from 2024-2025 and are not current prices.
Where can you see the Christmas lights in Lisbon?
Lisboa Secreta describes displays in the centre for the 2025 edition: Terreiro do Paço with its 30-metre tree, Rua Augusta, Praça Luís de Camões, and Rua Garrett, Rua do Ouro and Rua do Carmo. The article describes these displays in the future tense. For 2026, no map had been published at the time of writing: the 2025 area is a starting point, with no guarantee it will return.
How many kilometres of lights are there in Lisbon?
For the 2025 edition, the council announced 182 km of LED lights across 46 locations, with around 1,000 light structures and 5,900 decorative pieces, according to Lisboa Secreta. The 2026 figure had not been published at the time of writing. The €750,000 municipal tender published in May 2026 does not give this number.
What does the Lisboa Card cost at Christmas 2026?
According to a lisbontourism.org guide dated 19 October 2026, the adult Lisboa Card costs €31 for 24 hours, €51 for 48 hours and €62 for 72 hours, with prices valid until 31 March 2027. This is a secondary source: confirm these amounts on the official visitlisboa.com site before buying.
Does the metro run on 25 December in Lisbon?
In 2025, the metro closed at 1 am on 25 December and reopened at 6:30 am, according to the Diário de Notícias of 23 December 2025. We have no confirmation for 2026. 25 December is a public holiday and transport runs at reduced frequency: allow a margin for late-evening journeys and check the Metropolitano de Lisboa timetables the day before.
What should you eat on 24 December in Lisbon?
24 December is Consoada, the Portuguese family dinner. Boiled cod is often served, but it is a tradition rather than a rule, and each family has its own version. We did not check any restaurant list for this guide. For dessert, the Confeitaria Nacional, on Praça da Figueira, is cited by Lisboa Secreta for its bolo-rei, with an annual waiting list: order in advance.
Are museums open on 25 December?
Generally not: guides say most museums and monuments are closed on 25 December, and 1 January is also a public holiday. This usual pattern is not an official list. Check each museum’s website before planning a visit. On 26 December, reopening depends on each venue.
Should you book the centre’s guided walk in advance?
We checked the price on 21 October 2026 for dates from 22 October to 20 November 2026; specific slots still need checking on the listing. We have not checked slots over the festive period. Look at the Viator calendar before choosing a date, and only book a Christmas visit once you have seen the slots for that day.
