In El Calafate, nine excursions rated 4.73 or higher are worth booking, four of them on the Perito Moreno Glacier. They cost €77 to €448 per adult for two travellers. For a first visit, the boardwalk visit, with optional navigation past the front, at €121 per person, is the most direct choice.

Checked on against the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

In El Calafate, nobody comes for the town. They come for the Perito Moreno Glacier, and the question that always comes back is the same: which excursion should you book? To answer it, I went through the experiences listed on Viator in the destination and kept only nine: those with a rating of at least 4.7 out of 5 and more than 100 reviews. The others fall below one of those two thresholds.

What stands out in this selection is that it is not a list of landmarks. Four of the nine experiences lead to the glacier, and the other five take you elsewhere: onto the La Leona River, the Santa Cruz, the slopes of Cerro Frías or the shores of Lake Argentino. If your goal is to see the glacier up close, start with the boardwalk visit, with optional navigation past the front, which is the most talked-about of the group with 310 reviews. See availability for the boardwalk visit.

To decide quickly, I weigh three criteria: physical effort, duration and budget. The table below brings them together. The cheapest outing in the selection, at €77 per person, is a full day on the glacier in an air-conditioned vehicle; the most expensive, at €448, is a ten-hour mini-trek on the ice. In between, there are horseback rides, three- to four-hour 4×4 trips and two kayak outings.

A word on prices before you read them. They are per adult, based on two travellers, and were checked on 21 October 2026 for the window from 4 November 2026 to 2 January 2027. A Viator price changes with the date and the number of participants, so what you read here is a snapshot, not a promise. Availability is counted day by day over the same window, and each listing states how it is confirmed.

Why El Calafate revolves around the Perito Moreno Glacier

El Calafate is a small town on the shores of Lake Argentino, in the province of Santa Cruz, in Argentine Patagonia. Most excursions leave from the town, with pick-up from your hotel. The Perito Moreno Glacier is 78 km away, according to the online encyclopaedia Perito Moreno Glacier. Flights land at Comandante Armando Tola airport, about twenty kilometres from the town, according to the airport’s entry. The journey time between the airport and the town is not given in the sources consulted: do not fix it in your plans without checking.

The glacier is an immense tongue of ice: its front is about five kilometres wide and rises on average 74 metres above the lake. According to the same encyclopaedia, the total thickness of ice reaches about 170 metres and the length of the glacier is around thirty kilometres. These are orders of magnitude; if you quote a figure, check the source.

The glacier does not stand still. It advances from June to December, then retreats from December to April, still according to the same source, and its northern front has been retreating since 2020. A January outing therefore does not see the same front as a November one. That is a reason to check the calendar before choosing, not just the price.

The most famous phenomenon is the rupture of the ice dam that separates the Rico branch from Lake Argentino. It happens at irregular intervals, from roughly once a year to less than once a decade, and the water level can rise by around 30 metres before the rupture. The years cited by the encyclopaedia range from 2004 to 2019. A rupture cannot be scheduled, and no excursion in the selection promises one: treat it as a possible bonus.

The glacier is part of Los Glaciares National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 under criteria vii and viii, according to the IUCN factsheet.

This is where the budget is decided. For a non-resident visitor, entry to Los Glaciares National Park costs 50,000 Argentine pesos (ARS) per day, under Resolution 132/2026 in force since 1 June 2026. This rate was checked on 21 October 2026 on the page of the national parks administration, which also details the other visitor categories. It must be reconfirmed on the day of publication, as it changes often. Three listings in the selection explicitly exclude entry, and another mentions it as an access fee payable on site. For the others, the listing says nothing: ask before you pay.

The park is not just the glacier. The La Leona petrified forest, where the highest-rated kayak outing goes, lies about 110 km from the town, according to Welcome Argentina, hence an eight-hour day for this outing. The Cerro Frías ranch, for its part, is about twenty minutes’ drive from the town, according to the local tourist office, and the two outings that go there, the 4×4 and the horseback ride, each last four hours.

Read the table column by column. For budget, the full day at the glacier is the cheapest outing, and the ten-hour mini-trek the most expensive. For effort, only three listings call for a medium level of fitness: the two kayak trips and the ten-hour mini-trek. The available days show how often the outing runs across the window, not a free slot: check the date on the listing before you pay.

Kayak on the La Leona River in Argentine Patagonia
Source: Viator

1. Kayak on the La Leona and walk to the petrified forest

Rating 4.97 (275 reviews) 8 hours €167.66 per adult (based on 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

I put it first because it is the best-rated outing in the selection, with 275 reviews. The day starts with about an hour of kayaking on the La Leona River, then two hours of walking to the petrified forest. The site is about 110 km from the town, according to Welcome Argentina: the day lasts eight hours, transfer included, and that is what sets it apart from outings lasting a few hours. Hotel transfer, guide, snacks and photos are included. A packed lunch and tips are not. I recommend it to those who want to get off the glacier road: the listing asks for a medium level of fitness for the two hours of walking. The listing advises against it for pregnant women.

  • Transfer, guide, snacks and photos included
  • Packed lunch and tips not included
  • Not advised for pregnant women, according to the listing
  • Free cancellation

2. Double kayak on the Santa Cruz, about 15 km of paddling

Rating 4.92 (167 reviews) 5 hours 30 €226.57 per adult (based on 2 travellers) Confirmed by the supplier

If you would rather paddle than walk, this is the outing to pick. You go down the Santa Cruz River in a double kayak for about 15 km, with a waterproof wetsuit, buoyancy aid, boots and gloves provided by the operator. Private transport from the hotel is included, and the outing ends with lunch in a typical Patagonian house. The total duration is five and a half hours, which makes it a long day, full of effort. The point to keep in mind is confirmation: it comes from the supplier after your request, not straight away. I recommend it to those who want a proper physical activity on the water, and I advise not to schedule it on the day of a return flight.

  • Private transport and lunch included
  • Wetsuit, buoyancy aid, boots and gloves provided
  • Manual confirmation, not immediate
  • Free cancellation

3. 4×4 to the Cerro Frías ranch and viewpoint

Rating 4.90 (108 reviews) 4 hours €135.94 per adult (based on 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

The Cerro Frías ranch is about twenty minutes’ drive from the town, and this 4×4 circuit lets you see the area from above without a long walk. According to the tourist office listing, the route runs to the ranch, with a stop around 450 metres, then a viewpoint at the summit, at 1,095 metres. The duration is four hours, with private transport. The departure point is not named by the API: the listing mentions pick-up from the hotel or a meeting point at the operator’s. Confirm it before you book. I recommend it to those who want a viewpoint without a long walk: the listing says it suits all fitness levels, and the outing stays available across the whole window checked.

  • About 20 minutes’ drive to the ranch
  • Private transport included, departure point to confirm
  • Available on all 60 days checked

4. Perito Moreno Glacier by the boardwalks, optional navigation

Rating 4.84 (310 reviews) 8 hours €121.44 per adult (based on 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

This is the most direct outing to see the glacier, and the most sensible choice for a first visit. The air-conditioned vehicle collects you from the hotel, and then you walk along the boardwalks facing the front, at your own pace. A navigation past the front can be added as an option. Neither its supplement nor its inclusion in the displayed price was checked: ask before you pay. The guide speaks Spanish or English. The day lasts eight hours, transport included. Two items are not included: the park entry and lunch. Budget for them on top of the displayed price. I recommend this option to those who want to see the glacier up close without particular effort or the logistics of walking on the ice. Confirmation is immediate, and cancellation is free.

  • Air-conditioned vehicle and hotel pick-up
  • Park entry and lunch not included
  • Navigation past the front, optional

5. Horseback ride on the slopes of Cerro Frías

Rating 4.84 (147 reviews) 4 hours €139.57 per adult (based on 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

If you like horses and open landscapes, this ride offers a different pace from the glacier road. It lasts about four hours in the saddle and climbs the slopes of Cerro Frías, with a view over the Centinela river valley and Lake Argentino. Tea and coffee are included, the meal depends on the time slot, and snacks and soft drinks are not. The listing puts it in the adventure category: if you have never ridden, tell the operator before you pay. I would pick it for travellers who want a four-hour horse outing rather than a day in a vehicle. It is available on all sixty days checked, which leaves room to choose the date.

  • Four-hour horseback ride, adventure category
  • Tea and coffee included, meal depends on the time slot
  • Available on all 60 days checked
  • Free cancellation

6. 4×4 circuit to Punta Bonita and the Walichu site

Rating 4.78 (276 reviews) 3 hours €117.82 per adult (based on 2 travellers) Confirmed by the supplier

This is the shortest outing in the selection: three hours in a 4×4 along the shore of Lake Argentino. The circuit climbs towards the Punta Bonita cliff, then stops at the Walichu archaeological site, whose entry is included. The operator says the site is about 9 km from the town; no public source confirms this distance, so treat it as an indication. Lunch depends on the time slot. I recommend this circuit to those who want a three-hour outing without blocking the day, and who can wait for the supplier’s confirmation. The listing says it suits all fitness levels and provides pick-up from the hotel from a list of establishments: check that yours is on it. The product is open on 56 of the 60 days checked: confirm the date you have in mind on the listing before you pay.

  • Entry to the archaeological site included
  • Three-hour duration, lunch depends on the time slot
  • Manual confirmation, not immediate
  • Free cancellation

7. Glacier mini-trek, ten-hour day

Rating 4.78 (243 reviews) 10 hours €448.25 per adult (based on 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

This is the most expensive product in the selection, and it is worth understanding why before you book. The day lasts ten hours, including about an hour and ten minutes of walking on the ice with crampons. The guide accompanies you on the glacier, and the hotel serves as both pick-up and return point at the end of the day. The price is justified by the duration, ten hours, and by the effort: the walk on the ice, with crampons, lasts about an hour and ten minutes. The listing advises against the excursion for people over 65, children under 10, pregnant women, people who are overweight and people with a disability. Glacier access fees are paid on site, and you must bring your own packed lunch. I recommend it to those who want to walk on the ice seriously; the listing asks for a medium level of fitness.

  • Guide, pick-up and return to the hotel
  • About 1 hour 10 of walking on the ice, crampons
  • Restrictions: over 65, pregnant women, disability
  • Free cancellation

8. Ice mini-trek, departures from 7am to 11.30am

Rating 4.74 (131 reviews) 5 to 11 hours depending on the option €339.86 per adult (based on 2 travellers) Immediate, then manual

This outing is the most flexible on timing: departures run from 7am to 11.30am depending on the slot you choose. The guide speaks Spanish and English, the ice-hiking equipment is provided, and a boat trip is part of the programme. The duration varies from five to eleven hours depending on the option, and the hotel transfer is optional: check what you have ticked before you pay. The guide contacts you the day before to confirm the meeting point, so you need to stay reachable. The listing says it suits all fitness levels: that is the supplier’s statement, not a measurement, so ask for details if walking on ice worries you. Park entry fees and the meal are not included. Confirmation is immediate, then manual according to the supplier: until you have the confirmation message, the place is not secured. I would choose it for an early start on the ice.

  • Bilingual guide, Spanish and English
  • Ice equipment and boat trip
  • Staggered departures from 7am to 11.30am
  • Free cancellation

9. Full day at the glacier, optional navigation

Rating 4.73 (252 reviews) 8 hours €77.03 per adult (based on 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

This is the cheapest glacier outing in the selection, at €77.03 per adult on the basis of two travellers. It is still a full eight-hour day in an air-conditioned vehicle, with a bilingual guide, and pick-up and return both take place at the hotel. The option of a one-hour navigation past the front is chosen at the time of booking. Lunch, tips and entry fees are not included. On site, the listing mentions snack bars and restaurants. It also says it suits all fitness levels. I would pick it for those who want the whole visit on a tight budget. Confirmation is immediate and cancellation is free, but the navigation option is decided before you pay, not after.

  • One-hour navigation past the front, optional
  • Immediate confirmation and free cancellation

Field tips before you book

Sorting comes down to three figures. By duration, the shortest outing lasts 3 hours (the 4×4 circuit to Punta Bonita) and the glacier mini-trek lasts ten hours (card 8 can run to eleven hours depending on the option). By budget, the gap runs from €77.03 to €448.25 per adult for two travellers. By availability, the La Leona kayak only runs 48 days out of the 60 checked, against 60 for the horseback ride and the 4×4 to Cerro Frías.

Choosing by effort

Three listings call for a medium level of fitness: the kayak on the La Leona River, which combines about an hour of paddling and two hours of walking; the kayak on the Santa Cruz, with about 15 km of paddling; and the ten-hour mini-trek, with about an hour and ten minutes of walking on the ice, with crampons. The other six listings say they suit all fitness levels: that is the supplier’s statement, not a measurement. For a group that is undecided, the boardwalk visit remains the most direct way to see the glacier without walking on the ice.

The glacier and outing calendar

The listings give the number of days open out of the 60 days of the window checked. Most 4×4 and horseback outings run almost every day, and the most restricted is the La Leona kayak, open 48 days out of 60. For the glacier, the encyclopaedia consulted says the front advances from June to December and retreats from December to April, and that its northern front has been retreating since 2020. The listing for the ten-hour mini-trek says it runs all year round.

Transport and meeting point

Most outings start with a hotel pick-up, from a list of establishments provided by the operator. Before you pay, check that your accommodation is on it. For two outings, the departure point is not named by the API, and for another, the guide only gives the location the day before. Leave a margin on your arrival and departure days, as confirmation and the meeting point are not always given straight away.

Important: three outings are not confirmed immediately. For the kayak on the Santa Cruz and the 4×4 circuit to Punta Bonita, the supplier validates after your request; for the ice mini-trek, confirmation is immediate, then manual. Do not book a return flight for the same day on the strength of one of these outings.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing price per person with total. The prices in the table are per adult on a basis of two travellers: for a couple, the total is double. For three or four people, search again with the right number, as the price per person can change.
  • Forgetting the options. Navigation past the front is chosen at booking on some listings, and park entry is paid separately when it is not included.
  • Ignoring health restrictions. The ten-hour mini-trek is not advised for people over 65, under 10, or with several medical conditions.
  • Counting on the ice dam rupture. The phenomenon is irregular, and no outing guarantees it.

What to bring

For the ten-hour glacier mini-trek (card 7), bring a packed lunch: lunch is not provided, and glacier access fees are paid on site. For the La Leona kayak (card 1), a packed lunch is not included and walking shoes are required. Also keep some money for tips, which are not included in the La Leona and full-day glacier listings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best-rated excursion in El Calafate?

The kayak trip on the La Leona River, followed by two hours of walking to the petrified forest, has the best rating in the selection: 4.97 out of 5, from 275 reviews. It lasts eight hours, with hotel transfer, and costs €167.66 per adult on a basis of two travellers, checked on 21 October 2026. It is not advised for pregnant women. See the listing.

How much does an excursion to the Perito Moreno Glacier cost?

In the selection, the four glacier outings range from €77.03 to €448.25 per adult, on a basis of two travellers, checked on 21 October 2026. The cheapest is a full day in an air-conditioned vehicle, with navigation as an option; the most expensive is the ten-hour mini-trek. The park entry fee, when it is not included, is paid on top, on site.

Is entry to Los Glaciares National Park included?

It depends on the outing. Three listings explicitly exclude it: the boardwalk visit, the full day in an air-conditioned vehicle and the ice mini-trek with staggered departures. Another listing mentions it as an access fee payable on site. For the others, the listing says nothing: ask the operator before you book. For a non-resident visitor, the official rate checked on 21 October 2026 is 50,000 Argentine pesos (ARS) per day; it changes often and can be checked on the website of the Argentine national parks administration.

Can you see the Perito Moreno ice dam rupture?

The phenomenon exists, but it is irregular. The ice dam that separates the Rico branch from Lake Argentino breaks at varying intervals, from roughly once a year to less than once a decade, and the water level can rise by around 30 metres before the rupture. No outing in the selection promises to show it. If that is your goal, check locally before you choose the date.

Which excursions are confirmed straight away?

Six outings are confirmed immediately: the La Leona kayak, the boardwalk visit, the horseback ride and the 4×4 to Cerro Frías, the full day at the glacier and the ten-hour mini-trek. The ice mini-trek with staggered departures is immediate, then manual according to the supplier. The Santa Cruz kayak and the 4×4 circuit to Punta Bonita are confirmed after your request: do not schedule them around a flight.

Are there age or health restrictions?

Yes, for some outings. The listing for the ten-hour mini-trek advises against it for people over 65, under 10, pregnant women, people who are overweight and people with a disability. The La Leona kayak outing is not advised for pregnant women. For any other medical doubt, ask the operator before you pay. The ten-hour mini-trek requires a medium level of fitness, according to its listing.
